AT SUMMER CAMP – HERE’S WHY
Our program at Canadian Adventure Camp is designed to give kids a sense of freedom after an academic year filled with rules.
In fact, we even break a few rules that your kids followed while they were at school.
Running and socializing are actively encouraged here.
We ’ r e a l s o p r e t t y s u r e t h a t wearing swimsuits and shorts all day would break a few school dress codes, and don’t even get us started on our musical lunches.
They get pretty loud to say the least, but we all have fun!
H o w e v e r, t h e r e i s o n e r u l e t h a t we strictly enforce that your kids might have been exposed to at school.
We ’ v e f o u n d t h a t t h i s r u l e tends to invite a few questions, so give this guide a read through to understand why we stand by this decision.
While we embrace technology w h e n i t c o m e s t o s a f e t y, w e d o ask that campers leave their cell phones at home.
What Happens When Kids Unplug?
Research has shown that kids need minimal screen time e a c h d a y.
Without a cell phone, kids turn to other activities to fill their time.
Adventure Island is filled with activities such as gymnastics, waterskiing and swimming.
We ’ v e a l s o s c h e d u l e d e a c h day so that kids are always busy doing things that build teamwork and confidence.
Unplugging leaves room for r e a l l i f e a c t i v i t i e s l i ke m a k i n g new friends.
Campers also learn to love nature and develop their skills in their favorite sports.
For many kids, getting away from cell phones also brings a s e n s e o f r e l i e f.
Social media places a great deal of pressure on kids, and online bullying is a very real thing.
W h e n a s ke d , m o s t o f o u r campers will tell us that leaving their cell phones at home allowed them to feel free to be who they are without fearing judgment.
What Other Devices Should Stay Home?
In addition to cell phones, we’ve included a few other items on our packing list to leave behind.
These include items such as radios, mp3 players and walkie talkies.
We a l s o f e e l t h a t t h e s e a r e a distraction.
P a r e n t s a l s o l i ke k n o w i n g that these devices are safe at home.
We s p e n d s o m u c h t i m e a r o u n d the water here at camp.
A lost phone or music player is impossible to retrieve from the b o t t o m o f t h e l a ke .
How Can Our Family Communicate?
We s t i l l e n c o u r a g e s n a i l m a i l . T h e r e ’s s o m e t h i n g a b o u t receiving a piece of mail at camp that is just exciting.
So, go ahead and pack your child some fun stationary and pens. Campers also love s t i c ke r s t o r e a l l y d r e s s t h e i r letters up.
As we said, we do still e m b r a c e t e c h n o l o g y. This is why we’ve opened up Bunk1 Email.
This unique method of communication allows you to exchange handwritten notes with your kid with the speed of an email.
F i n a l l y, o u r s t a f f i s a l w a y s available to help a camper m a ke a t r u e p h o n e c a l l i f it is really needed.
Although we try to encourage independence, we would n e v e r m a ke a k i d w a i t t o t a l k to their parents if they were distraught.

We j u s t w a n t t h e m t o h a v e a safe, fun summer that shows them the power of unplugging.

In fact, most kids are over worrying about their cell phone b y t h e e n d o f t h e f i r s t d a y.
After a few weeks without their electronics, your kid will have found the joys of unplugging and discovered a few new strengths that they can bring back home.
