Is Prostate Health related to Diet? The Prostate sits up under the bladder. Many men have an enlargement of their prostates, causing annoying and sometimes painful urinary problems. It is also the number-one cancer spot in a man’s body.

Nutrition and Prostate Health By Neal D. Barnard, M.D. Prostate issues are not inevitable. They depend on what men eat. Like so many other parts of our biology, the mixture of nutrients we choose every day can encourage prostate cells to grow into a mass or can help them stay put. Foods strongly influence sex hormones, including testosterone. Could it be that cutting out meats and dairy products and adding more vegetables to our plates could turn down the hormonal stimulation of the prostate and prevent prostate problems? That is exactly what researchers have found. Daily meat consumption triples the risk of prostate enlargement. Regular milk consumption doubles the risk and failing to consume vegetables regularly nearly quadruples the risk. Prostate hyperplasia is reportedly increasing in Asian countries, paralleling the westernization of the diet that has occurred in recent decades.

The meat-based diet is now spreading to other parts of the world encouraging many hormonerelated conditions, and prostate enlargement is no exception. Even if you grew up as a meateater, your prostate prefers you eat plant-based. Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer differs from prostate enlargement in that cancer cells can invade neighboring tissues and spread to other parts of the body.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate Health and plant-based diet From Ontology Nutrition.org: Prostate Cancer and Diet Health experts note that prostate cancer rates vary greatly from country to country, and from region to region. There are many reasons for these differences, such as how much exercise people get, differences in obesity rates, and genetics. One of the biggest differences between countries with low vs. high rates of prostate cancer is diet. Specialists believe these differences in diet are one of the biggest reasons why prostate cancer rates vary so much among the different areas of the world. In other words, some ways of eating seem to protect against prostate cancer, while other dietary patterns may increase prostate cancer risk. Prostate health is simple enough to maintain through diet and a healthful lifestyle. Following a plant-based diet is associated with lower risk of prostate cancer. A plant-based diet does not have to be completely vegetarian or vegan. Plant-based simply means that the majority of the foods you eat are minimally processed, whole plant foods. This includes vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), a plant-based, cancer prevention diet should start with your plate:   

Approximately ½ of the surface should be covered with vegetables, fruits and/or legumes (beans). Approximately ¼ of the surface should be covered by starches, such as whole grains or potatoes. The remaining ¼ of the surface is covered by lean protein sources, such as fish, chicken, or other lean meats. If you want to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, lean protein can come from legumes, and soy products, such as tofu or tempeh. Treatment

The range of treatments offered to men with prostate cancer includes active surveillance, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, cryosurgery, chemotherapy and surgery. Mayo Clinic’s proton beam therapy facilities are under construction in Arizona and Minnesota. Proton beam therapy using intensity-modulated pencil beams will permit more-precise distribution of radiation therapy with fewer side effects. Conclusion I‘ve read that most men with prostate cancer die WITH it, not FROM it. I am all for preventing any type of cancer possible through lifestyle and Whole Plant-Based diet. Unless one has an aggressive type that grows fast and travels, it is usually best to just let it go and go on living. Reserve these treatments to the aggressive types. Concentrate on prostate health, not merely avoiding cancer. http://www.plant-strong-health-blog-by-gary.com/prostate-health-on-plant-based-diet/
