Welcome to Hartlepool College a place to learn, a place to enjoy, a place to excel First of all, thank you for picking up this prospectus and for considering Hartlepool College of Further Education as a place for you to study, learn and grow. This prospectus will be full of what we do and how we do it; I would like to focus on why we do what we do. Simply put, as the Principal of Hartlepool College of Further Education, I want to transform your life. I want to ensure that, during you time with us, you gain the necessary qualifications, skills, knowledge, attitudes and confidence to go on to exploit the opportunities that will exist for you when you leave the College - whether this be in the world of work or the world of higher education. effect further education can have. Back in the late 1980s/early 1990s a further education college in the Midlands transformed my life. Further education gave me the qualifications, skills, knowledge, attitudes and confidence to go to university first to study for a degree and then to gain my teacher training qualification. Further education provided the platform for me to realise my aspirations. Further education is transformative and I want to help transform your life to ensure you fulfil your potential and realise your aspirations. Student Services support and advice that’s impartial and free With a quarter century on the front line of College life, Student Services is one of our longest-running sections and has been much emulated by other colleges and even some universities. This completely free service is literally an essential part of EVERY students’ experience here. Located close to the main entrance and reception desk for maximum visibility and convenience to users, Student Services is the College’s flexible support service available to all prospective and existing learners. Similar resources are now common and fundamental to most educational establishments, so it’s easy to forget that Hartlepool College was one of the first to introduce this type of facility, and that we set the template and the standard of excellence that many others followed.
Student Services has grown over the years into a high-tech hub that consists of: • the College’s reception staff; • a course information officer; • transitions and enrolment staff; • a careers guidance team; • a bursar team. They are always on hand from opening to closing, helping anyone who needs advice, guidance or help with a problem.
Opening Times & Contact Details Opening hours vary between term time and holiday periods, but we do remain open all year round with the exception of the Christmas break. You can contact or call into Student Services every day during normal office hours, with extended hours during peak periods.

For example the reception team handles all enquiries - in person, by phone or electronic - while the guidance team works across all curriculum areas to support learner retention and successful progression. With vast experience across multiple sectors and post-graduate accreditation, the guidance team also works extensively with internal and external schools to support positive outcomes such as further/higher education or employment. The College’s bursar, admissions and enrolment team supports learners with financial grants and equipment requests as well as childcare and meal support. The transitions and enrolment staff work to support new entrants and progressing students through interviews, administration and more. You don’t need an appointment to visit Student Services, though arranging one is advisable to ensure you are seen quickly at peak times.
Travel within easy distance Hartlepool College is literally a few minutes walk from the town’s many reliable, very regular train and bus services, offering fast connections to all parts of Hartlepool and its surrounding villages, Billingham, Stockton, Middlesbrough, East Durham, Tyne & Wear and even North Yorkshire (to see how close, take a look at this short video: bit.ly/hcfetravel). But did you know that we can also offer a range of help and support with travel, depending on circumstances?
Students* who live more than four miles from the College receive free travel when they enrol here, which extends as far north as Sunderland and as far south as Northallerton. Students can choose which bus or train company they wish to use, based on where they live. They are then either issued a termly pass, or paid money directly into their bank to allow them to buy a weekly pass. But you don’t necessarily need to live out of town. Hartlepool students* also receive free travel if they live over two and a half miles from the College and have a household income of less than £25,000 per year. All students can also apply for a Stagecoach VIP discount pass.
Students who wish to access free and discounted travel will need to complete a funding application form which is available from Student Services. We also have information on the wide variety of travel options available to all our students. Please feel free to contact the Student Support Team for further advice. *Students need to be aged between 16 and 18 years old and studying on a part-time or full-time Further Education Programme. Finance & Fees - we’re here to help Of all the concerns and questions that prospective students and their parents have, matters of finance are among the most important and frequently asked. At Hartlepool College we ensure that you have up-to-date, accurate information about all the financial support that is available. Specialist Equipment, Protective Clothing & Uniforms Hartlepool College provides all engineering and construction students with the protective clothing, safety boots and specialist equipment required for their studies. In other areas, for example sport studies, hairdressing, beauty therapy and catering, students are required to purchase their own uniforms and specialist equipment. However, the College uses central suppliers to ensure these costs are kept as low as possible and students can apply for financial support towards the purchase of these items.

fees for under 19s All courses are free to students aged under 19 on the 31st August in the year that they enrol different fees apply if you are over 19 and vary according to individual circumstances. Aged over 19? Hartlepool College operates a Discretionary Learner Support Fund for students aged over 19 who attend College. This Fund can assist with the following: • Travel costs for those living more than 2.5 miles from College; • Purchase of specialist equipment and books; • Examination fees; • Other essential course costs. In addition, there is a separate fund available for child care support for students over 20 years of age. All applications are confidential and are subject to income assessment, funding availability and, where support is on-going across a College year, satisfactory attendance and progress.

Enrich your life with Hartlepool College Enrichment forms an important part of each student’s Programme of Study. All enrolled students are entitled to a wide range of clubs and activities to help develop their inter-personal, social and employability skills, as well as offering fun activities and the opportunity to make new friends. The College offers a broad range of activities and clubs, with numerous sports on offer for both competitive and casual players. There are also clubs involving film, music, car maintenance, video games and even flying on our state-of-the-art flight simulator. The College also has LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender) and Disability groups, a Social Committee and a Student Council, while events such as Voice of the Learner allow students to directly shape how the College is run and developed. We also celebrate numerous important dates throughout the year and organise events to support local and national charities, many tied in with our Respect campaign (see page 43 for more information). The Enrich + Programme
LIKE FUN? JOB DONE!
The Enrich + Programme offers you the chance to try a range of extra-curricular activities, whether you want to have a hand in shaping how the College operates or gain yourself some new skills.
Social activities form an important part of the Hartlepool College experience, and throughout the year the College organises numerous fun events to help national and local charities.
You can sign up for all sessions in Student Services (see page 6) within your first two weeks. All programmes run subject to demand, and new ones are added often.
In recent years we’ve held several fancydress fun runs along the promenade to Seaton Carew, a brilliant raft race competition in Hartlepool Marina, and loads of events in the College itself.
These have included Car Maintenance Workshop led by a qualified Motor Vehicle Instructor, Animation Workshops, Video Games and Book Clubs, Guitar Workshops and a Film Club in the College’s 200+ seat large-screen HD Conference Centre.
These have included giant dance-a-thons (including an epic “Conga through the College”), our own version of the Great British Bake Off, a dress as your hero day and many others.
Another very popular enrichment activity is the College’s Flight School, where students can learn how to fly a virtual aircraft on our superb simulator, from gliders and light aircraft to the Boeing 737 airliner and the BAE Hawk fast jet, chosen ride of the RAF Red Arrows.
When we’re not being thoroughly ridiculous, students can still socialise in our comfortable “chill zones”, with soft furnishings, free wi-fi, and sometimes even table games like pool and fussball, not to mention our Rapport coffee bar and great value food court.

It’s a proven fact that employers and universities look far more favourably on CVs that show evidence of volunteering - it indicates motivation, team spirit and dedication. Hartlepool College’s Student Ambassador scheme is a great CV-booster, but aside from that it’s a huge amount of fun and a fast-track to the heart of many Hartlepool College events. Student Ambassadors perform a number of duties, from assisting at College events and working with visitors and members of the public to representing the College externally at numerous venues and activities. Student Ambassadors are also heavily involved in consultations with the College over student issues, and have a real influence in the College’s policies and facilities. world class advice from a world champion mentor The most successful sportspeople grab all opportunities as they present themselves - and Hartlepool College has a blistering one in the form of former student and World Champion boxer Savannah Marshall, who has joined the #TeamHCFE staff as a mentor to the student athletes! Savannah shot to fame as a BTEC Sports student at the College eight years ago, and has now returned to support the next cohort of aspiring athletes to follow her lead and reach the top tier of their sports. By combining her commitments as a UK Sport athlete, Sky Sports scholar and #TeamHCFE athlete mentor Savannah will bring the perfect mix of experience, knowledge and skill as a role model to her mentees. Speaking of the role Savannah said “The level of support available to the #TeamHCFE athletes rivals that I have seen on a national and international level. I will add to that by supporting these athletes with my experiences of nutrition, training and psychology.”
College football teams showed they’re real players In 2014 Hartlepool College made history in the Cleveland Schools Under-19s County Cup when, for the first ever time, the final was contested by two teams from the same College - ours! Both the HCFE A and B teams reached the final - a fantastic achievement considering the B team had to knock out two rival college A teams to get there! On the day the A team (above) took the trophy, with a final score of 7-2!

Keeping it real - the facilities and programmes that employers want to see When design began on the new Hartlepool College in 2006, it was with a huge amount of consultation with students, employers and the community to ensure that the skills we deliver are those that businesses and individuals need to succeed in our highly competitive jobs market. No expense was spared on making sure that our learning environments were equipped with the same kit and used the same procedures as top companies. Add to this most courses are delivered by industryexperienced lecturers and Hartlepool College graduates have a very real advantage in the eyes of employers. For example our Aerospace courses aren’t delivered in a classroom with a few bits and pieces scattered around - we have a full hangar with two complete aeroplanes, a helicopter and an airliner engine. Likewise Automotive courses are delivered in a huge, professional-level garage on vehicles and engines provided by top firms like Nissan and Cummins. Hair and Beauty have full-working salons open to paying customers, as is our award-winning restaurant The Flagship, with students preparing and service meals under the supervision of chefs.
We could keep going - Design students working in industry-standard Mac studios, Sports students having access to a fullyequipped gym and sports laboratory - the list goes on across all of the course areas we deliver, which are divided into ten “Schools”. As we’ve been around for a long time (over 100 years!) some people are surprised at the sheer breadth, modernity and technicality of the skills the College delivers, though one of the reason we’ve been so successful for so long is our ability to adapt and anticipate future needs, ensuring students leave us with skills and qualifications that are always relevant and in demand. “Fried Gold” - exclusive opportunities for experience Hartlepool College is often visited by external partners and special visitors. For example dozens of College students gained vital resuscitation skills from Cleveland Fire Brigade officers on a special “Save A Life” Day, pictured above, which was inspired by the heart attack of footballer Fabrice Muamba. A large number of HCFE students were accepted as “Games Makers” for the London 2012 Olympics, and nearly 200 College students also got to play victims and hostages in “Operation Sandpiper”, a major emergency services firearms training exercise we were exclusively selected for by the Police (see page 61 for more details and a video link). In addition, the College frequently hosts special guests who come in to share their experiences of work, such as Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry VC, pictured above, who won the Victoria Cross for gallantry in Afghanistan. Some courses also organise trips within the UK and abroad, occasionally with “once in a lifetime” opportunities. Recent visits have included France, Switzerland, Holland, the USA and Africa.

Access to Further Education Access to FE is a unique GCSE-based course, currently offered by Hartlepool College exclusively across the region.
Access to FE is a second chance for those who, for example, want to go to college but have narrowly missed out on gaining 5 GCSEs at A* to C.
For maximum flexibility all you need to qualify for this course is a minimum of one GCSE at C or above, in any subject, and at least four GCSEs at Grade D.
All sessions are delivered by specialist tutors, providing you with the expert tuition you require to succeed and secure those all-important A*-C Grades.
Once on the course, students can select to study four GCSEs from the following areas:

Thanks to a ground-breaking partnership, students enrolling for courses who aspire to higher education can take advantage of a combination that delivers both the skills and the qualifications they will need to give them a real advantage when it comes to applying for university. While many students often combine multiple courses, this arrangement conveniently ensures they get everything they need in one handy, hassle-free package, and with the reassurance that they’re studying at two of the best education providers in the region.
The College will lead on the applied and vocational courses such as engineering, health, building studies, travel and applied science, while a range of A Levels will be offered by English Martyrs College at their Catcote Road campus a short journey away. Hartlepool College Apprenticeships amongst the biggest, amongst the best Many employers recognise that their future lies in quality Apprenticeships. Hartlepool College of Further Education believes this too. We’re the biggest provider of Apprenticeships in the Tees Valley, second biggest in the North East and the seventh best performing in the ENTIRE country. Apprenticeships are a programme of structured learning and work experience encompassing almost all vocational areas. They offer trainees a broad spectrum of work and not just individual skills. Apprentices learn through a combination of on and off the job education and training. Apprentices gain experience working alongside other employees in their workplace, while the College delivers additional skills and studies. Thousands of businesses in our region have recognised that Apprenticeships can make organisations more effective, productive and competitive by addressing the skills gaps directly and ensuring that employees get the skills that employers value and need.
As well as school leavers, those who may have been previously employed are also eligible, and prior experience can be taken into consideration when assigning places. All Apprenticeships include the following elements, known as the “Apprenticeship Framework”: Knowledge-based Qualifications; Competency-based Qualifications; Functional Skills or GCSE; Employment Rights & Responsibilities; Personal Thinking & Learning Skills. All elements must be completed, and the pattern of college/employment attendance will vary depending on the Apprenticeship and type of employment.
Hartlepool College has cultivated many important partnerships that benefit our students, such as arranging work experience, educational visits and even Apprenticeship opportunities with some of the biggest business names out there. Rolls-Royce, Babcock Defence Services, the Armed Forces, Wella Hair Products, Heerema, Caterpillar, Darchem Engineering, Gestamp Tallent, Huntsman, the NHS, the Police and Fire Services and Airbus Industrie are just some of the many of the 2000+ partners the College has worked with in a variety of roles, with new partnerships being forged on a regular basis.

Apprentice,
like Emma Thompson Emma Thompson, 18, of Bishop Auckland (pictured above) is a great example of what a Hartlepool College apprenticeship can do to enhance a person’s skills and career prospects. Emma is currently impressing a major employer with her talent and hard work while studying on the L3 Diploma in Engineering. Emma first discovered her passion for all things mechanical while at St. John’s School. However, instead of continuing along an academic route Emma was keen to get into work. She earned an Apprenticeship with Altec, a highly respected company providing CNC precision machining and specialist engineering services to a wide range of industries including the oil, gas, nuclear, renewable, aerospace, space science, medical, automotive and defence sectors. Altec are also one of Hartlepool College’s highly valued partners, and so as part of her Apprenticeship we were the only choice for the educational components she needed to fulfil. “There are closer colleges to me,” said Emma, “but I had heard Hartlepool was the best so I’m pleased this is where Altec wanted me to be. Friends have told me about their college having minimal facilities, and even not enough tools so you have to share. The facilities at Hartlepool are superb, and the lecturers come from industry backgrounds - they teach from experience, not things they’ve just read about.”

Construction Trades - teaching the skills of yesterday to give our built heritage a tomorrow Many construction specialists have concerns about a shortfall in traditional heritage skills being handed down to young people, which they feel could be detrimental to projects on historic buildings where a careful approach must be taken to preserve the character and authenticity of older constructions. Hartlepool College, in partnership with Heritage Crafts Alliance, offers access to training in construction heritage skills, with options in Timber and Masonry. Learners who complete this will become employable within the sector and are able to enter a full apprenticeship programme. This apprenticeship programme has been specifically designed to train future craftspeople to work on older and historic buildings (those built prior to 1919). Based at HCA’s stunning rural training facility at Thorp Perrow in North Yorkshire, apprentices learn traditional skills in amazing surroundings. Plumbing
Plumbing, heating and air conditioning are vital aspects of buildings, and Building Services Engineers are responsible for making sure that these key components are in place and working effectively to make a structure fit and comfortable for use. The College covers four main areas of building services engineering; Plumbing; Electro Technical; Heating and Ventilating; Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. These topics, along with a general introduction to the building services engineering sector, form five core areas of study. Students also choose from three optional units including Levels 1 and 2 in Health and Safety, Environmental Awareness and Building Services Engineering Science.

Students will cover basic skills and knowledge within a range of industries, which will help prepare for a career as an Electrician, a Plumber, a Heating and Ventilating Engineer or a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineer. Our Construction programmes include a variety of units which are designed to suit learners who may wish to pursue a rewarding career in civil engineering at technician or engineer level. Painting & Decorating
Painters and decorators work for a variety of organisations, including building contractors and local authorities, but a large percentage work for specialist painting and decorating contractors. Some specialise in industrial painting, and self employment is commonplace. The courses introduce students to the safe working practices used within the construction industry. These include: Domestic and light commercial: • removing old wall paper and/or paint; • filling holes and cracks before applying new materials; • measuring surface areas and calculating amount of materials needed; • preparing surfaces with primer and undercoat; • mixing paint to correct shades either by hand or using a mixing machine; • applying paint and hanging wall paper and other decorative materials.

Industrial: • using abrasive blasting methods to remove old coatings and rust; • applying new surfaces using industrial spray painting equipment.
Essential personal qualities include good practical and creative skills, the ability to work accurately and have an eye for detail. You will also be able to work alone and as part of a team, be comfortable working at heights and have an in-depth awareness of health and safety requirements.

Hartlepool College students often travel to regional, national and even international competitions, and one of our most success competitors is Sophie Willingham (above). Sophie is an exceptionally talented Painter and Decorator who has represented the College at national level in major competitions such as the Dulux Apprentice of the Year and Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year, over the years picking up numerous awards and commendations - often against older and more experienced competitors or placing high up out of hundreds of rivals. Sophie, formerly of Manor School, started at Hartlepool College in October 2012 after spending a year at Sixth Form, and has progressed to higher levels throughout her College career. Her energy, cando spirit and high levels of ability made her a natural to compete on behalf of the College, and she has also been rewarded with the College’s own Painting & Decorating Student of the Year at its annual Celebration of Achievement.

Skilled carpenters and joiners are in demand throughout the construction industry, finding work with construction firms, specialist joinery companies and shop fitters. In some instances it is also possible to find employment in specialist workshops producing furniture, or heritage skills, rather than working on site.
• Formwork: building temporary wooden shuttering to support work on large buildings; • Machining: cutting and shaping doors, skirting boards, sash window frames in a workshop; • Bench joinery: making and assembling doors, windows, staircases etc. in a workshop; • First fixing: working on a building site fitting the wooden structures of a structure such as floors, roof trusses; • Second fixing: working on site installing door frames, skirting boards, doors and other fittings.

You wooden believe what our students did for Bradley Hartlepool College students frequently take part in charity events, often on their own initiative. This was demonstrated fully when students from Carpentry & Joinery set about raising money for Bradley Lowery, the Hartlepool toddler suffering from Neuroblastoma, a very aggressive form of cancer that requires specialised treatment (you can find out more and see Bradley’s progress at http:// bradleylowerysfight.org.uk). The challenge they set themselves was to design and built a bicycle constructed completely of wood (a couple of bolts excepted) and then ride it along Seaton promenade. The went ahead and did both, with Liam “buns of steel” Parkinson completing the distance tenaciously if not comfortably - the bike used gear cogs instead of a chain, and with no tyres or padded saddle proved to be quite a challenge to even move. After the ride the students were presented with a cheque for £1000 by the Staff of Domino’s Pizza, Hartlepool who kindly sponsored the event, with even more donations coming in from individual sponsors.

Bricklaying
Bricklayers work for a wide range of organisations including building contractors and local authorities, but many are self employed and work on a subcontract basis for other companies. Work may be on new build projects, or renovations and repair, including heritage sites. Bricklayers can be involved in a variety of jobs that require a mix of skills. They need to be able to mix mortar by hand or machine using a mechanical mixer, and work from the corners inwards building up the courses (rows) of bricks. They will shape and trim bricks using hammers, chisels and power tools and check courses are straight using spirit levels, water or plumb lines. The College’s courses introduce students to the safe working practices of the construction industry.

We offer Diplomas at Levels 1, 2 and 3. All courses offer a hands-on approach to the brickwork trade, covering the safe use of resources, effective use of safe working platforms, working relations and fundamental construction techniques in a modern, large scale and fully-stocked workshop, alongside opportunities to gain live practical experience. The CSCS certificate forms a mandatory part of the qualification.
Essential personal qualities include good practical skills, the ability to read plans and diagrams and the ability to work methodically and accurately. Construction is an area with enhanced risk, so an awareness of health and safety – especially when working at heights - is essential, as is being physically fit and active. Being able to work in a team is also a vital part of this career path.

Building winning skills While Hartlepool College students are regular travellers to competitions across the country (and sometimes beyond), the College itself also often plays host to competitions such as the regional heats of major national skills competition SkillBuild. Organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), SkillBuild gathers young bricklayers, carpenters, decorators and representatives from other areas of Construction from across the region. Colleges and training organisations from Teesside, Tyneside, County Durham, Northumberland, Yorkshire and sometimes even further congregate for an intense day of challenges that test their skill, stamina and ability to work under pressure. Participants compete for prizes on the day, but also the prestigious opportunity to win a place on the WorldSkills UK team that competes at the annual WorldSkills competition, held in places like Abu Dhabi. Often nicknamed the “Skills Olympics�, the event brings together the best talent from the entire world to represent both their industry and their country.

The content on this course covers all of the requirements that students need to meet industry standards for pursuing a career in the electrical industry. Skills include wiring a variety of electrical circuits in a variety of cables and containment, inspection and testing of installed circuits and fault finding techniques.
Safety First It cannot be stated highly enough the importance of safety in all areas of the College, and we have a robust policy in place to ensure that all students and visitors can go about their business with the minimal amount of risk possible. This is especially important in the Skills Academy - the largest area of the College and the one dedicated to the various engineering and building sectors we deliver courses and training in. To minimise the risks inherent in these vocations, and at the same time promote a culture of good working practice, the College strictly ensures that all students, staff and visitors wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while within such areas. Students acquire a variety of skills, such as the selection, layout and positioning of materials to be cut or joined, how to work from drawings and templates, and the use of a variety of welding techniques to fabricate sections or make repairs. They also learn to inspect and test their work using a variety of testing equipment.
Essential personal qualities include good hand-to-eye coordination, the ability to concentrate and to work very accurately. Excellent technical knowledge of material properties under different conditions is essential, as is the ability to follow technical plans and specifications. Other requirements include good numeracy skills to work out tolerances and measurements, an awareness of health and safety issues and the ability to work in a variety of locations - some jobs may involve working in confined spaces while others may be exposed to the elements.

A poignant reminder of the need for worker safety Located in a large open space on the College’s second floor is the Tree of Remembrance, a poignant and imposing stainless steel sculpture some four metres tall. Designed and fabricated by internationally renowned north east firm Clifford Chapman Metalworks, it is an excellent example of local skills - but more important, the Tree serves as a tribute to employees killed or injured at work. Acting as a permanent reminder of the need for safety and the value of human life, it is a place where respects are paid on those annual occasions when the College’s students and staff reflect on those lost to us, such as Workers’ Memorial Day on 28th April and Armistice Day on 11th November. The branches are dressed with appropriate decorations for each ceremony, with poppies, coloured ribbons and written messages mingling amongst its metal leaves. People rely on vehicles for business, for the distribution of goods, for transport and for making our daily lives a lot easier and more pleasurable. Motor vehicles have never been more advanced, intelligent and environmentally sound, and keeping them on the road is a specialised job that requires a high degree of skill and knowledge. Students have the opportunity to apply for courses from entry level to Level 3, and there are also Apprenticeship options for those in employment, delivered on a day release basis. All qualifications are structured around practical skills development on live vehicles, including three new Qashqais donated by Nissan. Practical lessons are delivered in our large industry-equipped automotive garage within the College’s Skills Academy, while

The car is the star! While there are many displays of students’ work throughout the College, the one that most often causes visitors to stop and admire it is undoubtedly our vintage MG TC car. Built in 1946, the car was bought from Steve Baker MG at Grantham and restored by Hartlepool College BTEC Diploma Automotive Engineering students under the supervision of staff members Peter Ham, John Longmoor and Rob Pearson. The vehicle was originally red but, according to an invoice that came with it, was painted black in the 1970s for the grand sum of £17. On arrival at the College it was taken apart, given a thorough mechanical overhaul, reassembled and then resprayed in Old English White. All chrome components were also replated or replaced, a new interior was fitted and wooden dashboard installed. The car is now in full working order, and is an excellent example of both the high level of skill our Automotive students possess, and the opportunities they have to take on projects that are just that little bit different.

Hartlepool College’s School of Engineering is its largest, and is dedicated to one principle - Engineers make the world, and we make Engineers. In fact, the very first incarnation of Hartlepool College was founded over 150 years ago to train engineers at the height of the Industrial Revolution - a heritage we proudly continue to this day in our modern, technology-driven and globalised world, making us the North East’s original STEM centre! It’s virtually impossible to pigeon-hole the vas number of engineering disciplines with the word “Engineer”. For example Mechanical Engineers are the people who design and develop a huge range of products – everything from toys to oil rigs – while Manufacturing Engineers design and maintain the production lines in factories needed to produce them in quantity. Process Engineers oversee the production of the energy, oils, fuels, polymers, pharmaceuticals and chemical products used in just about every kind of industry. Aviation is one of the world’s major growth sectors, and also one of the most responsible areas of engineering – it is no understatement to say that even the slightest error can lead to catastrophe. Our programmes offer an innovative approach to the field of aircraft maintenance and development in some stunning surroundings.
Aerospace is multifaceted and students who choose it will study aircraft principles, maintenance, technology, avionics and supporting science and maths. They also participate in a practical project. In addition to the academic element of the course students learn the essential skills of team working, developing personal attributes, leadership and managing others.
The course provides live mechanical, electrical and avionic experience of aircraft systems, and concludes in a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification for aircraft engineering employment in either the civilian or military sectors. Successful students have in the past progressed to higher education programmes and Apprenticeships in aeronautical or other engineering disciplines.
Working in a modern, well-equipped learning environment complete with two complete jets planes, a helicopter and an airliner engine, students participate in practical laboratory, workshop and classroom activities. College students have also recently enjoyed national recognition, taking part in the WorldSkills UK “Skills Olympics” competition and have opportunities to gain experience on live RAF bases, maintenance and flight operations.

One of the first things many visitors to the College see is a Jet Provost trainer mounted in our grounds. In its bright red, grey and white livery this plane a testament to the skills of the students who carefully disassembled, restored and then put it back together - and also an indicator of the stunning facilities and opportunities Hartlepool College can offer students in this growing, advanced and responsible sector.
Real aircraft, real experience One of the most impressive parts of the College is its Aircraft Hangar, housing two ex-RAF Jet Provost trainers with Viper engines, a Westland Gazelle helicopter (a revolutionary design that influenced most modern helicopters) and a huge engine from a Boeing 747 airliner donated by Rolls-Royce. All of these are present to be worked on by students, offering invaluable hands-on experience of genuine aircraft. Other assets include a wind tunnel for aerodynamic testing and various assemblies of control, propulsion and avionics systems from a variety of aircraft types. In addition, thanks to a special partnership, students are frequent visitors to RAF Linton-on-Ouse and RAF Leeming in Yorkshire, and work with the ground crews of Babcock Defence Services on the live maintenance and operational sorties of Shorts Tucano trainers (pictured below) and BAE Hawk fast jets (above) - an experience described by one student as “gold dust�. Students also have the chance to visit places such as the Paris Air Show, and get up close to the latest aircraft and aerospace technology.

Students work in a modern, open plan design studio, with a vibrant atmosphere. With adjoining Apple Mac suites running a variety of industry-standard design, imaging and 3D software, the Design Centre is an inspiring place where students can express creative ideas, plan and organise a project through all stages, and generate the final product to commercial presentation standards. Students also focus on vital areas such as good communication skills, the ability to work both in teams and independently, and the absolutely essential discipline of working to deadline.

National exposure for talented creatives The College has forged a special relationship with the world-renowned BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. An innovative adaptation of a former flour mill on the bank of the Tyne, creative students were invited to participate in a project called “BALTIC Unseen” - an exclusive year-long photographic project. Students made the journey up to Gateshead every five to six weeks with a brief to capture the covert, hidden, restricted and obscured side of BALTIC. Gaining unprecedented access to the iconic building’s staff-only areas, workshop spaces, the installation of exhibits, maintenance areas and even its rooftop (with commanding views of the Newcastle skyline on the opposite side of the Tyne), it proved a great team and confidence builder, as well as a creative opportunity. Using a range of cameras, from high-end digital SLRs to camera phones, ipads and polaroid cameras, it resulted in a show of stunning work that went on display to the public over Summer 2015, sitting alongside exhibitions from some of the world’s most prominent artists.

There are three routes available, although as standard all students will study the following subjects: fundamentals of science; scientific investigations; mathematical tools; working in the science industry; and scientific practical techniques. Apprentices, graduates and technicians employed in the sector undertake a wide variety of work ranging from: scientific research and development; processing of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and biologicals; and working in criminal science and clinical pathology.
It is also possible to mix Applied Science (at Intermediate or Advanced level) with one or two of our baccalaureate GCSEs. So if you missed out on your E-Bac by a subject at school, or if you wish to top up with a Modern Foreign Language – then it would certainly help your future career prospects.

The College offers a variety of programmes in health and social care at a number of different levels. Some topics are general to all, such as health and safety, equality and diversity and communication skills, while others are specific to the areas of health (such as anatomy, well-being and health promotion) or social care (for example care of individuals and working with groups). In health they can include midwifery, nursing and allied health professions such as sports medicine, while social care can include family support and community-based work.

Child Care
Child Care specialists work with children from birth to young adulthood. They can work in a variety of settings including local authority nurseries, primary schools, private day nurseries and in the private sector. The tasks required vary depending on the age group and setting or the child or children in question, but could include planning and supervising activities such as reading, arts, crafts and creative play. At HCFE Child Care students are given ample opportunity to experiment practically at special events such as out well-established, highly popular annual Halloween “Spooktacular”. Other responsibilities will include observing children and ensuring that they are safe at all times and contributing to reports for parents and parental liaison.

Dependent on the level studied the range of skills could include child development, play learning and supporting learning in school. Work experience is an important element in Early Years programmes at Levels 1, 2 and 3. Other tasks can include visiting children’s play areas to evaluate safety (including seasonal safety, such as the differences between summer and winter), all of which help students develop an “eye” for good and bad practice.

Safeguarding & Support don’t take it, talk it! Student wellbeing is at the very core of the way Hartlepool College operates, and we have numerous methods of ensuring it. The hospitality industry is huge, ranging from Michelin star restaurants and top hotels through to fast food outlets, school meals, staff restaurants located within many companies - and even military cooks. Hartlepool College has made an enormous commitment to this area, including an industry-standard gourmet restaurant that is fully open to the public (see page 43). Students work with our industry-expert Hospitality & Catering tutors working within our fully operational restaurant serving to the public, and also the chance to take part in special events such as a WW2 themed Remembrance Day dinner for veterans and the College’s numerous high-profile awards ceremonies. Careers can include progression to Higher Education such as Degree level, or pursuing a chosen career including being a Chef, Manager or within the education sector.

Ryan enrolled on the College’s Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery, Patisserie and Confectionery Certificate whilst working full time at the Hartlepool Power Station - a career he felt he wasn’t enjoying. Showing immense talent in the kitchen, not to mention great courage in giving up a steady job to follow his ambition, he instead decided to become a pastry chef. His hard work and commitment throughout the year was outstanding and did not go unnoticed, with Ryan representing HCFE in numerous national competitions and cooking in the College’s own Flagship Restaurant. He was also a worthy winner of the College’s own Hospitality & Catering Student of the Year. He has since moved to London to further his career, from where he sends back frequent news about his successes and new acquaintances, such as a “selfie” (above) with top chef and TV presenter Michel Roux Jnr. Ryan also often returns to the College to share his experiences with new students (below).

Beauty Therapy
There are over 7,500 beauty salons and over 5,400 hairdressing salons offering beauty treatments in the North East alone – and this doesn’t include those Beauty Therapists working in hotels, health spas and on cruise liners. Beauty Therapists carry out a range of treatments that includes facials, manicures, pedicures and nail treatments, makeup,removing unwanted body and facial hair, individual eyelash extensions, microabrasive skin peel, massage and aromatherapy. A qualified Beauty Therapist has many options open to them, such as working in a beauty salon, at a health spa, in complementary therapies or on a cruise liner. Many also find work abroad.

The College offers courses at a variety of levels, and entry requirements vary. Our Luminary Centre has professional salons using the same equipment and products widely used in industry, which are open to the general public. Students will frequently work with commercial clients, which allows them to develop their practical and communications skills. ICT and numeracy are also vital components of their study.
Essential personal qualities include enjoying working with people of all ages, a high standard of personal appearance and an interest in basic anatomy and the human body. Chloe Watson, 19, from Hartlepool, has secured a job that will fill many with envy – a position as a massage therapist at the Ocean Beach Spa in Ibiza. Massage therapy is a form of relaxation perfect for holiday destinations, spas and cruise ships, but it can also be used to help people with sports injuries and give relief to people with long-term health conditions - a job that makes a real difference to a great variety of clients. After leaving Dyke House School Chloe had originally wanted to be a hairdresser, and enrolled at Hartlepool College on a Hairdressing course. However, a trip to Ibiza to see a friend who was working there as a massage therapist made her realise that was the career for her too. Thanks to the College’s flexible approach and support, Chloe changed courses, instead pursuing a new direction that allowed her to pursue this ambition. Her tutors considered Chloe a “top student” with consistently high levels of achievement, and none were surprised when she managed to turn her ambition into reality so quickly.

There are over 180,000 hairdressers working in the industry in the UK, and demand is rising. Opportunities include working in salons, hotels, health spas, on cruise liners and even as mobile hairdressers. The average working week for a qualified hairdresser is around thirty seven hours, although this varies depending on where they are employed, and generally incorporates evenings and weekends. Students will also develop ICT, numeracy and communication skills within the qualification.

Hairdressers cover a range of activities that not only include styling and hair care tasks such as shampooing and blow drying, cutting, colouring, perming, pinning-up and creative styling, but also customer duties such as meeting and greeting and reception work. The retail sector is one of the most important drivers of the UK economy. Retail refers to the process of buying goods from a supply-chain manufacturer and then trading these goods on to a customer. The property sector is also a huge area filled with opportunities for both private homes and business/commercial buildings. Some of the best known brands are retailers and include multinational corporations, high street brands to boutique, designer and specialist stores. In some cases these stores will oversee every aspect of design, manufacture and selling – Apple is perhaps the most obvious example! Public Services programmes prepare students for careers in uniformed services such as the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Police, Fire Service and Prison Service. Military services personnel can be deployed anywhere in the world, while those serving in civilian sectors will generally work in the UK. Successful students have also progressed to university via the College’s Foundation Degree in Public Services. Duties will depend upon the sector that recruits join. Most British military personnel play an important role in NATO and UN operations across the world. Many overseas deployments are involved in peacekeeping and humanitarian duties. The military are regular visitors to the College, with events ranging from assault courses, tactical and logistics challenges and even a field kitchen and the chance to sample food from combat situations. The Police protect life and property, preserve law and order, prevent and investigate crime, and apprehend and detain offenders. The Fire Service protects and saves people and property from fire, provides emergency support at accidents and incidents and promotes fire safety. The Prison Service supervises and rehabilitates offenders located in prisons, remand centres and young offenders’ institutions.

like Dugald Donachie Hartlepool College student Dugald Donachie, 18, of Seaham is reaping the benefits of his Public Services programme after becoming a retained fire fighter at Seaham Fire Station, a part of Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service. Former Seaham Community School student Dugald had long held the ambition of becoming a Fire Fighter, and joined the College’s Level 3 Public Services to further his goal. His determination, attitude and ability quickly impressed both his tutors and their professional partners in the Fire Service. Dugald hopes now to balance his work as a retained fire fighter with further studies and is aiming high, having completed the Level 3 successfully with D*D*D* and studying on the Foundation Degree in Public Services. Kevin Fincken, Dugald’s tutor and a former fire fighter, said “It’s a great testament to Dugald’s hard work and attitude that he has gained this success in such a competitive post. Progressing to Higher Education Hartlepool College of Further Education, despite as the name suggests being a large FE provider, is also delivering a number of HE courses in conjunction with local universities like Teesside – and their message is that studying at Higher level is easier and less complicated than people might think. A number of our courses offer the option to progress to HE. Higher Education is something a lot of people may think is something not suited to them, usually because they believe it will cost them a lot of money, or that they won’t have the time, or that they will have to travel out of town to study. Additionally, some people question if there are any real benefits from having a Higher level qualification like a Degree or a HND. The College was recently proven to be within the top seventeen percent of all English colleges for overall provision, rising to the top ten percent for adult course performance. Last year saw over 400 of its students apply for Higher Education courses, and those who did are already feeling the benefits. The College allows people to study for Higher qualifications locally, and with all the support and advice they need, allowing them to get on with the important business of passing their course and improving their prospects. For example, with finances an especial worry for many people, the College’s course fees of £6000 are well below the maximum £9000 HE providers are allowed to charge.

However, many courses actually have no up-front fees, and numerous financial support packages are available subject to eligibility.

Degree Graduate, like Lewis Marr
Working in the field of sports, Lewis Marr knows better than anyone that while you don’t always win, it’s how you carry on after losing that matters. Just four short years ago he faced a dilemma that made him realise that his future success was in his own hands – with the right help and support. In 2011, Lewis joined Hartlepool College of Further Education as part of the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Exercise programme to complement his job as a School Sport Coordinator in Bishop Auckland. However, not long after starting the course austerity cuts led to the school’s sport structure being reformed, leaving Lewis without a job. However, his tutors knew that Lewis had the potential to do great things and with their encouragement he set up Education Enterprise and enrolled on a Foundation Degree in Sport, eventually graduating with first class honours. Lewis commented “It would have been very easy for me to be down and beaten by losing my job, but the enthusiasm and support from the sports team at Hartlepool College filled me with the confidence to go it alone. And I am so glad I did, I couldn’t be happier with the results”. Education Enterprise now employs five full time and several part time members of staff, delivering over 120 hours of primary school PE, after school clubs and school holiday programmes. Lewis is now embarking on a PHD in Sports Coaching after reigniting his love for education at Hartlepool College, and often returns to speak to current students.

The College has on-site parking facilities for students, and disabled parking at both the front and rear of the building. The entrance to the main car park is via Andrew Street, off Huckelhoven Way. There are also several pay and display car parks close by if needed.

The College is also a short walk from Hartlepool’s main transport interchange and all bus services from within Hartlepool and from the surrounding area.
