DUES A big thank-you to all those members who responded so promptly and generously to our dues notice in March. Of our 136 memberships, 71 have now paid dues for the year 2000. Of the 71 paid-up memberships, 20 of these are patron ($25.00) or benefactor ($100.00) members. As you know, our museum is composed entirely of volunteers; there are no paid employees. However, we depend on your financial support to pursue various projects designed to preserve the history of the Township of Ocean. We have purposely kept our dues very reasonable, only $5.00 a year. If your mailing label is highlighted, you do still owe dues. As your new president, I would dearly love to be able to report that all 136 of our memberships are fully paid. If you still owe dues, please mail your check today. Thankyou. Ginny Richmond

QUILTERS Since 1988, a group of talented quilters have met on Tuesday nights in the Museum to create a handmade quilt. Each quilt is raffled at our annual exhibit in December to raise funds for the museum. The quilters are now hard at work, under the direction of Marge Edelson, creating this year's quilt. New quilters are always welcome.

THIRD GRADE CLASS VISITS TO MUSEUM: Every year all Ocean Township Public School third grade classes visit the museum. Our docents, Lesley Dorsett, Ann Stiles, Kathy Parratt, Lois Landis, and Ginny Richmond introduce them to the history of Ocean Township and try to show them what school and life was like in Ocean Township 100 years ago. We welcome one third grade class each Tuesday morning until all of them have visited the museum. This year, for the first time, previous to visiting the museum, Marge Edelson accompanied each class on a guided bus tour around the township to introduce these students to various historical places of interest. The bus tour really added a great deal to the understanding these young students exhibited concerning our township. We find that most of our third graders listen well, ask good questions, and welcome the chance to learn about our history.

CLASS OF 1957 REUNION The last eighth grade class to graduate from Oakhurst School was the Class of 1957. This class is planning a reunion for the weekend of October 6 and 7. On Friday evening, October 6, they are planning a reception for their members in the auditorium of the Oakhurst School. At that time, our museum will be open, staffed, and ready to provide tours for class members. We are looking forward to greeting these former students.

MONMOUTH COUNTY HISTORY PROJECT All municipalities in Monmouth County have been asked to participate in a county history project. Each town has been asked to submit a 750-word history of their community along with a copy of their municipal seal. A book will be compiled from these submissions and presented to the public on Archives and History Day (Oct 14, 2000). Our museum was asked by the township manager to comply with this request. Therefore, Mrs. Marge Edelson recently wrote a condensed version of the history of Ocean Township and it has been submitted to the Office of the County Clerk in Freehold. We all look forward to the finished book.

REORGANIZATION OF FILES, PHOTOS, SLIDES, AND NEGATIVES Some of our members have been working at the museum on Tuesday afternoons to reorganize our files, photos, slides, and negatives. More help is always needed.

PURCHASE OF OFFICE CABINETS Recently the museum has purchased two metal cabinets for the storage of office and general supplies. Also needed is a large-size file for the storage of newspapers and oversized prints. If you have any expertise in the acquisition of such a file, or know of anyone with a second hand one for sale, please call the museum at 531-2136 or Ginny Richmond at 531-4295.

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS Two of our members, Ann Stiles and Ginny Richmond have been bringing the history of Ocean Township to some of our local organizations. Their speaking engagements have included: Cartonians, St. Mary's Church, January 11; Ocean Township Senior Friendship Club, February 21, Jewish War Veterans, March 28. On May 24 they are scheduled to speak to the Interlaken Leisure Club. WATCH FOR NEWS IN THE FUTURE ABOUT OUR ANNUAL EXHIBIT
