A big thank you to all who have paid dues for 2002

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

Our Museum has been invited to participate in the Township of Ocean Memorial Day Parade, scheduled for Monday, May 27, 2002. The Ocean Township Community Celebration Committee requests that participants try to use a patriotic theme this year. Accordingly, we have submitted our application to enter the parade. Preliminary plans are for some members to march and carry our very first brand new banner. Members who are unable to march are invited to ride in the township’s trolley. Members who can put together an old-time outfit are encouraged to do so. Members, who wish to, may purchase a museum tee shirt to wear in the parade. Our President, Ginny Richmond and Grants and Fundraising Chairman, Doc Richmond have been asked to be the Grand Marshals for the parade. Our museum entry will most probably be right behind their car with our banner and marchers followed by the trolley. Your attendance at this meeting is important. We need to have some idea of how many members will participate and we must order the tee shirts. ALSO: The parade ends in Joe Palaia Park. Our Museum needs members to man a table in the Park to sell raffle tickets, sign-up bricks, and sell our books and maps etc. _________________________________________________________________________

EXHIBIT 2002

The title of this year’s exhibit is : “Old Fashioned Fun: 100 Years of Toys, Games & Local Pastimes.” Accordingly, the Exhibit Committee is looking for toys and games from yesteryear and information about old-fashioned entertainment that existed in this area. At the same time, a mini exhibit on the history of the old homestead destined to become our new museum will be displayed. We are searching for information and especially photos taken at the house. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH US IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION USEFUL FOR OUR EXHIBIT. DO YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO COULD BUILD A MODEL OF THE WOOLLEY HOUSE FOR OUR EXHIBIT? _________________________________________________________________________

COUNTY BOOK PUBLISHED

The office of the Monmouth County Clerk has just published a new book entitled, Town by Town, Impressions of Monmouth County. This endeavor required the participation and contributions of all of the 53 municipalities in Monmouth County. Marjorie Edelson, trustee and long-time member of our Museum, is the author of the section on the Township of Ocean. Our Museum has a copy of this new publication. In the near future, the book will become available to our members for $10.00.

GRANTS & FUNDING

Our Museum will be receiving a $5000.00 grant from the Monmouth County Historical Commission. This is a joint grant in the name of the Township of Ocean and our Museum. The money is destined to be used towards a new roof for our new museum. Also, in response to the many letters sent to various foundations, we have recently been notified that we will be receiving $500.00 from the Grand Marnier Foundation located in Paramus, NJ. This donation will be used towards the restoration of the Woolley House. Thanks goes to Doc Richmond, Grants and Funding Chairman, for his efforts in writing the above grant and his many letters to countless foundations. We are hopeful that more will respond favorably. _________________________________________________________________________

BRICKS UPDATE

To date approximately 125 bricks have been reserved in our memorial walk project. Bricks will cost $100.00 each and may be inscribed as you wish within the space limitations. Please call our Bricks Chairman, Paul Edelson, at 531-9187 to reserve your brick or bricks. Money and details for your brick will be collected at a later date. _________________________________________________________________________

OTHER EVENTS

On March 1 our Ocean Township Schools celebrated, “Read Around America Day. As part of this program, Mr. Michael Reilly, social studies teacher at the Ocean Township Intermediate School, asked our museum to provide a speaker for some of the 8th grade classes about the history of Ocean Township. Members, Ann Stiles and Ginny Richmond represented the Museum in this very successful event. On April 16, our Museum, welcomed Wanamassa Brownie Troop 1136, along with their leader, Jennifer Weisman and a few parents. Lesley Dorsett, long time member and docent at the Museum, introduced the girls to our museum and conducted a tour. _________________________________________________________________________

MUSEUM ACTIVITIES

Every Tuesday afternoon our Museum has been a beehive of activity. Maryann Farry, Lois Landis, and Kristi Goldenthal have been re-organizing and re-wrapping all of our antique clothing in acid-free tissue paper. All boxes are now numbered and all clothing is itemized. Eileen McCormack is making computer labels for all of our boxes and a master list for the Museum. Kay Zimmerer and Richard Kurkjian have been re-organizing our information and photos on our centennial houses. They are also in the process of photographing some of the homes. Jim Whitney has been cataloging all of our historic books and re-arranging them on our library shelves. This information will be entered into the computer. A big thank you goes to all of these dedicated members. Please join us on Tuesday afternoons. Many times an extra hand is needed for various projects. _________________________________________________________________________
