EXPERIENCE 12/2014 - 02/2015 Donn Koh Studio | Intern Conceptualised and designed three new housing projects in Singapore with SketchUp as the primary tool for designing, under the supervision of Donn Koh. Projects also include on-site field study.
02/2014 - 07/2014 The Ascott Limited | Intern Spearheaded and designed uniforms for Ascott Raffles Place, employing user-centred design approach. Project were handed over at prototyping phase, with manufacturer sourced, contacted, and prototyping details discussed. Other scope includes assisting the team in interior concept exploration of showroom at The Interlace and designing communication tools for prototyping hub, showcasing to internal and external stakeholders of Ascott’s innovation and design capabilities.

DESIGN JOURNEY A decade of exposure in design, both formal education and commercial training, has given me many opportunities to deliver my capabilities and offerings. From a design and technology student to a designer, I grew over the years and get myself exposed to the many different hats of design; service design, space design, conceptual design, interaction design, editorial design and fashion design etc. Am I a fashion designer or an industrial designer? Graphic designer? Interaction designer? Does it matter? The ever-changing field of design blurs the roles of designers. Design is design. Design is a type of communication. I do not have a fixed design philosophy. I believe a good design process is almost certain in yielding valuable outcome. Every project requires a different process model. The ability to plug and play one’s transferrable skills is crucial.

OCBC Grow is a redesigned reward system with a platform that helps young working adult enjoys personal growth towards both professional and lifestyle goals, through trusted partners. Furthermore, family and friends are integral in this whole service. Banking is not just about finances anymore. It is about the complete growth of their customers. Whatever matters to the customers, matters to the bank.

THE CHALLENGE The aim of this project was to create a meaningful banking experience for young working adults (YWA). How would users interact with the bank and use its services in the future? How can the bank stay relevant and ahead of trends? This project started out with intensive research on the target audience, the millennial (Gen Y). Gen Y behaves differently from other generations, and so are their needs and demands. New insights are necessary to generate innovation in the banking industry, to maintain and provide better services to them. Secondary research such as literatures and data figures provided us with the background information, while primary researches provided more particular insights.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY: CULTURAL PROBES We gained explicit and tacit knowledge from conducting interviews, observations and contextual documentation. However, deeper method needs to be carried out to gain latent knowledge. We employed cultural probes, a design techniques used to inspires ideas from insights. It serves as a passive platform for the designers to gather inspirational data about peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives, values and thoughts. Six participants took part in this process and contributed valuable information in designing at the later stages.
Postcard exercise allows us to gain understanding into what participant values most.

AN ITERATIVE PROCES Key findings were formed from insights gained from the various research methods. A service blueprint was drafted out, and an application was chosen as a medium for service prototyping. The prototype went through a few rounds of testing and evaluation, before finalisation.

MUNDANE OBSERVATION This project looked into the near future and extrapolates possible concepts relevant to humans. While most future concept turn to technology as a starting point, we looked at our environment and picked up potential mundane observations. When technology comes in too early, concepts have the potential to replicate existing conceptual design, making it uninteresting and unoriginal. We wanted the most honest human interaction with their surrounding. The real focus was about the experiences.

DUPLICATES We noticed that many carry duplicates around. We are so used to carry extra cash, credit cards, tissues and many more. Reason being we as human has the tendency to be prepared for what might come later. As we never know what is going to happen in the next minute or the near future, we are always on standby mode. We carry spare transport card as we are afraid the main card might not have sufficient value; hence, expiry of card when value is low. We carry umbrella around as we are afraid it might rain all of a sudden; expiry of fine weather. We fear. We want to be prepared for the unforeseen. We want to be in control, or even just for convenience sake. All in all, the unpredictability of future, things or environment, nudges us to behave that way.

THE FUTURE EXPIRY
PERSONALISED They can now infer.
Expiry is often associated with perishables, in particular, expiry dates on food products. The notion of expiry entails far more possibilities, across multiple contexts and domains. In the future, experiences will still be disrupted because things expire. What if expiry is extendable?
The aircon is about to turn off automatically at a preset time. It knows you would then switch on the fan and hence does that for you.

Expiry is no longer an end. Given the advent of new technology and the Internet of Things, the future of expiry is no longer marked by discontinuity or an end. The connectivity of everyday objects and environments will allow objects to cater to inferred preferences, communicate with each other, and take over the role of one another. The future of expiry will be about infinite extension, renewal, optimization and continuity. Experiences never die. The Dell Chip will be embedded in everyday objects and environments, to offer advanced connectivity and networks across devices, services and systems.

Bloom is a digitally responsive flower that corresponds with the usersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; breadth. Using Arduino it engages narratives of tangible/ intangibles senses of sight, smell, touch, anticipation, curiosity, surprises, immersion and closure. Bloom keeps people in good kind of distraction, engages a kind of call-and-response batter sort of balancing mind state, to afford inter-personal collegiate connectivity, addressing a corporate workplace.

STATE OF MIND
POSITIVE DISTRACTION
Studies and observations shows that stress level in Singapore is increasing over the years and that depression along with suicide cases has increased as well. We identified that distraction is a way to relieve stress temporarily, and in our project we aim to distract users by engaging multiple senses, helping them balance their state of mind.
Bloom helps keep people in distraction, balancing their state of mind, allows for inter-personal connectivity and at a higher level possible, policy or welfare changes.

Tasked with the project to create an exhibition booth for L’Oréal Luxe Travel Retail Asia Pacific, at the 2015 TFWA World Conference, Marina Bay Sands Singapore. The exhibit boasts an area of 20m x 15m, housing the 18 luxury brands of L’Oréal’s travel retail division. Drawing inspiration from natural landscapes, the exhibition was built around the emotions of mystery, curiosity and engagement. We aim to intrigue users to approach and explore our exhibit. Carefully placed curves give users a greater perception of depth within the exhibit, drawing their curiosity and guiding them throughout the exhibit. Equality in representation of brands is achieved without compromise of discussion areas. The continuous exterior represents L’Oréal’s road till today and is a way to celebrate the brilliance, which is L’Oréal.

APPROACH This exhibition took on the approach in creating an environment that is mysterious, arouses curiosity and engaging. We took inspiration from nature and amplified the elements of a cove; curve, fluidity and seamless circulation. Behaviours of small wave and big wave were translated into fast and slow movement respectively.
The Structure Extrapolating curves from naturally formed visuals, exhibit reflects them with seamless fluidity, guiding traffic flow.

MERCHANDISE BOOTH Modular booths were designed to fit seamlessly. Structure has a bold frame, which can be continue visually with the next booth aligned beside it. Flexibility also arranged was also achieved to give vendors greater room to distinguish and differentiate their products.

This proposal was a personal project, set out to design collaterals with a personal touch that was passionate, meaningful and memorable. The concept was to reflect our 8th years of milestones, from courtship to relationship, and eventually into lifetime commitment. The entire journey was captured in the publication. Apart from personal preferences, the ring was designed to symbolize years together with the 8 equally spaced notches. This project consists of a publication, a proposal ring, photography and videography of pre and post proposal process journey. The most personal work yet.

The Publication The publication is a documentation of our relationship milestones, no matter how small it may be. Every love life is unique and special to the very couple. Although images are more vivid in the head, the publication serves as a constant reminder of what we went through to get to this stage.

The Ring Personally, I believe every proposal, or even wedding, should be customized and done with passion and personal touches. As a designer, I would be ashamed if I were to get a ready to wear ring from the retails. As such, I designed my own version of proposal ring that tells our story. The diamond was sourced from a locally trusted retailer, while local craftsman crafted the ring.

TrisMax is a jaw rehabilitation tool, which aims at helping patient suffering from Trismus, limited jaw opening, to help regain their ability to open their mouth through the act of passive stretching and active strengthening of the jaw muscles. This product is 43% smaller than Therabite, the most effective device in the market currently. Also, it features a slightly rotatable mouthpiece to accommodate to patients of varied occlusal plane. The design of this new handle improves the ergonomics and comfort. Measuring tab stops at specific mark for a self-check progress. With the average healthy mouth opening, which ranges from 40 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 60mm, TrisMax offers a maximum opening of 60mm, by far the widest in the market.

The Situation Trismus refers of the limited mouth opening caused by the hardening of jaw muscles. One of the causes of trismus is the side effect of radiation therapy. It occurs commonly to patients who suffer from illnesses like head or throat cancer, where the radiation therapy is done near the neck and jaw. Trismus patients have difficulty talking, eating and maintaining their oral hygiene, which affect their quality of life. Worldwide, 263, 000 patients are diagnosed with oral cancer yearly, with 5% - 38% of head and neck cancer patients. Trismus is a common complication of treatment for head and neck cancer.

The Problem Professional rehabilitation tools for trismus are either ineffective or too expensive for many to afford. One of the conventional methods adopted by healthcare givers is the stacking of ice cream sticks in between the teeth to pry open the mouth. The patient is required to repeat the task several rounds to complete the exercise. This rehabilitation exercise is tedious; it requires a lot of strength and time. Our team felt that the rehabilitation tool has a lot of room for improvement to make it more affordable, less labour intensive, convenient and more effective. Therefore, it leads to the design of TrisMax.

Prototyping and Iteration We tried out a range of rough prototypes to experiment how different variations in sizes, lengths, and positions of certain levers in the mechanisms can affect both the input and output of the force. In the iteration stage, we move forward with each feedbacks and suggestions given. Due to the fine mechanism involved, we move on to 3D printing to get precise features and mechanism proofing.

Mechanical System Our design uses a 3rd class lever system; where the jaw is the load, the hand on trigger is the effort and the trigger pivot is the fulcrum. The load and effort moves in the same direction, which is convenient. 3rd class lever is commonly used and important when the load has to move through a large distance. Though mechanical gain is less than 1, which may require same or greater force open the jaw, it gives greater control and ease.

The future of work will involve more interactions between people. Hence, the transitions between focused and collaborative work should be effortless. Whether its working in privacy with no distractions or openly with co-workers to share and brainstorm ideas. So with workspaces becoming more dynamic our goal was to create a product that could encourage or help this type of work environment. Focus + Collaboration + Light = FoCol Light. Most office environments are over-lit, which can affect ones productivity, and interactions between groups and individuals are increasing. FoCol Light efficiently uses the quality of light to provide seamless transitions between these work modes.

The Brief
Light and Membrane
With workplaces getting more informal and interchangeable these days, workplace designs are on a rise. Hot-desking is already a norm, where people come into the office with no fixed desk. The dynamics of workplace has changed and it needed a new approach; fulfilling the need of an individual setting and facilitating a collaborative discussion. This project seeks to establish a refreshed perspective into the future of workplaces.
While a list of possible concepts was presented, light and membrane spoke to us to most. On a side note, lighting isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that explored than desks or workstation furniture. Hence, we believed lighting and membrane would be able to yield more interesting process. We wanted something that is manipulative, tangible and intangible at the same time.
For Who, I Worry, I Wish This process was conducted in groups, where participants come together and contributed thoughts into the pool. It helped us to go beyond just the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspectives to their concepts. It also opened up new design angles for us to ponder over.

“For Who” requires participants to have some ideas who they want to design for, and the types of contexts it could potentially work it.

“I Worry” allows concerns to be voiced out. Participants questioned the initial concepts and potential problems or loopholes that might surface. It helps the team in giving deeper thoughts to their concepts.

“I Wish” reflects the ‘wish list’ of participants. What they hope to see from those concepts allow the team to keep them in mind and give some thoughts to it during brainstorming phase.

Focus + Collaboration With light and membrane as our medium, we approached the project with an aim to create something that works for both individual and group setting. It was an incidental encounter with a torchlight that we realised the zooming function allows the light to enlarge and shrink at will. We set off to mimic that effect with various membranes. The opening of membrane allows the more light to leak and vice versa.

FoCol Light Focol light was the result of our exploration process. It was designed to be flexible and manipulative, that encourages work between individual and groups. Focol light is a lamp that efficiently uses the quality of light to provide a seamless transition between focused work and discussion, enhancing overall experience in a workplace.

A series of EZLink card was designed for the named companies yearly corporate gifts. This set of transport card was given to business partners and clients as a tradition for thanking them and maintaining the pleasant working relationship established.

The Brief
The Process
It is a common tradition for Chinese companies, in Singapore, to give out corporate gifts at the end of the year or during Chinese New Year, as a way to put their names out in the industry as well as to thank their clients and partners for the working year. The aim of this project was to create a memorable Ezlink card series that reflects the spirits of the named companies.
I was given a lot of flexibility for this project where the client gave me a main aim which is to portray the identity of the various companies. Hence, the end product was directed towards a visually lighthearted approach.
