Assistant Director
Switchback quartet SwitchBack started singing together in 2012 quite by accident. A previous quartet was comprised of tenor Erik Sherard, lead John Hayden, baritone Lee Thomsen, and a fourth singer on bass. However, just two weeks before the Cedar Rapids Harmony Hawks’ annual Gospel Concert, Terry Blessing was asked to step in to the group to sing tenor. Lee then shifted to bass, Erik went down to baritone, and SwitchBack was born. The quartet enjoyed singing together so much that they decided to continue. Since forming, they’ve been active in competition, performing locally, helping to educate students about barbershop, and even appeared in a few Iowa Lottery commercials. Most recently, they were pleased to be recognized in competition last October as the 2015 Central States District Quartet Champions. Hoping to build off this, the group will be traveling to Omaha next weekend to try and qualify for the International Quartet Contest, which is to be held in Nashville this summer. Please welcome to the stage…SwitchBack!
Lee Thomsen joined the Harmony Hawks as Assistant Director in May of 2009. Lee was previously Director of the Proud Image Chorus in Waterloo from 2003-2009. During this time, he led the chorus to the Central States District Small Chorus Championship three times. He has also sung in three different top 10 Central States District quartets: Take Charge, Night & Day, and SwitchBack. When he’s not barbershopping, Lee teaches K-2 General Music at Starry Elementary in Marion. He is married to the wonderful and extremely supportive Kari (his high school sweetheart) and they have four children: Ethan, Tate, Avery, and Mara. Lee’s other musical activities include creating learning tracks, playing drums for the Vernon Middle School show choirs, and serving as part of the praise team for his church, Living Hope Wesleyan, in Cedar Rapids.
Emcee Andy Petersen Andy Petersen, born and raised on a farm in Wyoming, Iowa, grew up listening to AM 600 WMT. A 2001 Midland high school grad, he participated in in sports, band, chorus, speech and FFA. Andy began his broadcasting career as a summer intern for WMT’s Farm Department and continued working there while picking up degrees from Kirkwood and the University of Iowa. At Iowa he began covering the Hawkeye football team, and for nearly a decade has hosted the ‘Bumper Brigade’ and ‘Altorfer Cat Hawkeye Huddle’ shows during the radio broadcast of each game. After college, Andy garnered a full-time position with WMT hosting a variety of programs there and on FM 96.5 Kiss County. Now, Andy is now back to waking you up with Eastern Iowa’s first look at news, weather, sports and fun on the WMT Morning Show with Doug Wagner and Andy Petersen. Andy has won numerous awards for his work over the years, including being named to the prestigious 40 Under 40 list by the Corridor Business Journal in 2011, and winning the coveted Iowa Broadcast News Association Best Anchor award in 2012. During his free time, Andy referees high school and college basketball, and serves on several boards of directors, including the Linn County Crimestoppers Board, Wyoming Fair Association, and Kirkwood Alumni Association. In addition, he enjoys helping out on his dad’s farm, playing cards and sports, and of course rooting for his Hawks and St. Louis Cardinals!

Members of A Few Good Men pose in front of a sculpture in downtown Cedar Rapids before performing for the Central States District Contest in October of 2014. The group received a long and enthusiastic standing ovation from the Barbershop Harmony audience.
Prairie Points’ A Few Good Men gaining regional notice A Few Good Men is Prairie Point’s select 8th/9th grade men’s choir. The group learns and performs barbershop and doo-wop music and even produces several octets and quartets each year. Formed in 2008, the group has introduced many young men to the joys of singing a cappella! One of our fondest memories is performing at the Central States BHS Convention at the Paramount last
school year. Each May FGM shares the stage with other select choirs from Prairie Point-- including GWT (Guys With Ties) and BBB (the 7th grade select men, Bad Buncha Boys.) In all, we have 190+ young men in choir, and over 90 in our select choirs!
Nance, others earn recognition at 2016 Installation Banquet
The emotional highlight of this year’s banquet occurred when John Hayden introduced Bob Nance as the winner of the Director’s Music Award. In his 65th year with the chorus Bob has recently struggled with some medical issues. Director Hayden said that when he sees Bob present and eager for rehearsal every week it really inspires him to do his best. Bob’s voice showed emotion as he accepted the award, but when Verna Nance had her turn at the mic said, “I’ve always told Bob, ‘When I die, I sure hope it won’t be on Barbershop night, because you won’t be with me.’” That broke everyone up. The Cedar Rapids Country Club hosted our annual semi-formal celebration in January which introduced the Harmony Hawks Board for 2016 and recognized several individuals for their contribution in 2015. Our top award, Barbershopper of the Year went to Larry Shay. Larry has led the membership team, coordinated singing valentines, coordinated our singing for the New Citizen’s Ceremonies, scheduled Singing Valentines and booked chorus and VLQ appearances for the chorus. Larry was taking a well-earned vacation the night of the banquet and he received his recognition in a later rehearsal.
Masterpiece. won the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2013 International Gold Medal
Tonight’s Special guests: Masterpiece Definition: Masterpiece ... a supreme artistic achievement; sometimes the work of one, sometimes a collaboration of many. Our featured quartet, Masterpiece is a California-
based quartet that reached the highest pinnacle of success in the Barbershop Harmony Society by winning the 2013 international quartet competition. Rob Menaker, Tenor… began his singing career
almost 40 years ago in his hometown of Columbia, Maryland. Rob lives in Gardena, CA, with his wife, Pat. Patrick Haedtler, Lead… was introduced to barbershop at the age of 12 when he joined the San
Jose Chapter in Northern California with his father and brother. Patrick resides in Huntington Beach, CA. Alan Gordon, Baritone… is a “barbershop brat,” having been introduced to the avocation through the involvement of both parents in San Jose, Ca. With music in the family room almost every night, it wasn’t a surprise that he was harmonizing with his sister at age 5. Alan and his wife, Cyndi, live in Fullerton, CA, with their daughter, Molly. Brett Littlefield, Bass… is the only native Southern Californian in the group. Hailing from Westminster, Brett started his barbershop singing straight out of high school, and the vocal world has been thankful. Father to Johnathan, Cody, and Sara, Brett makes his home in Orange, CA, with his wife, Karen.

Our mission: to promote singing for a lifetime.
About our chorus The Harmony Hawks Barbershop Chorus is a community service chorus based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Men of all ages from across Eastern Iowa sing with us. We are affiliated with the Barbershop Harmony Society, and barbershop harmony lies at the heart of our repertoire that also includes patriotic, gospel, and popular musical sung arranged in four-part a capella harmony.
Community Service: Some highlights last year include: • Singing with Orchestra Iowa at Brucemorchestra • Raising more than $3,000 for charity in our annual Gospel Concert • Providing music for many Naturalization Ceremonies • Teaming up with Metro Mix and choirs from College Community’s Prairie Point middle school in our annual spring show • Visits to area schools demonstrating vocal technique and barbershop quartet singing
Our current members range in age from high school youth to senior citizens with over 60 years of singing experience. By learning to blend our voices, we develop both our vocal skill and the bonds of friendship with each other. Singing invigorates us and keeps our minds’ sharp. Our mission includes reaching out to schools to assist them in bringing the gift of singing to their students.
Singing in competition:
The Harmony Hawks Chorus and quartets compete yearly in the Central States District of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Preparing for contest sharpens our skills and raises the level of performance on all our songs.

For over 75 years, a unique American art form As much a part of American culture as Old Glory, Mom and apple pie, barbershop quartet singing is an original American musical art form. It thrives today through the efforts of an organization originally named the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. Last year, the Barbershop Harmony Society society celebrated its 75th anniversary.
