Dahlgren 4th of July Event

Local communities, military remember Memorial Day By Andrew Revelos NSASP Staff Writer Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) marked Memorial Day in ceremonies in Colonial Beach, the Town of Indian Head and on board Naval Support Facility (NSF) Dahlgren. All three ceremonies honored Americans killed in the service of their country and commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. The 1942 battle turned the tide of World War II in the Pacific against Imperial Japan and in favor of the Allies. The May 28 ceremony in Colonial Beach began when Tommy Edwards, of American Legion Post 148, asked veterans attending the ceremony to step forward. The crowd honored the veterans with a round of applause. Sailors from the Aegis Training and Readiness Center (ATRC) presented colors before the crowd recited the pledge of allegiance. The choir of the Colonial Beach Baptist Church led the community in signing the National Anthem, and Edwards introduced Capt. Pete Nette, NSASP commanding officer, as the ceremony's guest of honor. "Thank you for having me," said Nette. "Distinguished veterans, Mayor [Fred] Rummage, honored guests and fellow citizens in Colonial Beach, it's a privilege to wear the uniform of the United States.

Capt. Pete Nette, NSASP commanding officer, addresses the crowd at the Colonial Beach Memorial Day ceremony May 28.

And it's an honor to be speaking to you on Memorial Day to honor and celebrate those who have given their lives to this great nation." Nette praised the veterans in attendance and spoke about their personal links with the fallen. "Like all of you I love this country and I'm proud to be a citizen," he said. "As we gather, I ask you to look around to those who have served in the past and in the present. They're the ones who served side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder with those who made the ultimate sacrifice." Those sacrifices, said Nette, can be found everywhere in American history. "Through the years and through our wars, America has never ceased to honor [our fallen]," he said. "At places like Lexington and Concord, at Gettysburg, Leyte Gulf, Anzio, and today's places like Kandahar, Kabul, Baghdad, Fallujah and Anbar Province, the sacrifices made by courageous heroes write the new chapters in the continuing story of American freedom." The number of Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice is sobering. "More than 1.3 million American service members died in the wars and conflicts this nation has fought since 1775," said Nette. "Each person who died ... was a loved one, cherished by family and friends. Each was a loss to their

Indian Head paramedics honored for life-saving By Andrew Revelos NSASP Staff Writer Paramedics assigned to the fire station at Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head were honored May 17 for lifesaving work they performed during the last year. Four firefighter-paramedics were recognized with Navy Fire and Emergency Services Life-Saving Certificates for actions that saved five lives on the installation and in the local community. The rescues outside the base's fence line were performed as fulfillment of the ongoing mutual aid agreement between Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) and local Maryland communities. "These gentlemen have been very busy this year," said Tracy Hall, chief of the NSF Indian Head Fire Department, of the paramedics. "This [recognition] is not something we take lightly. It's not something we just do, but when these guys make a difference, like they have been in the community and we have the outcomes that we've had, we decided they needed to be recognized." Firefighter-paramedics George Edelen, Frankie Hannah and Wayne Sanders were recognized for saving one life on Oct. 14, 2011, when they "administered life-saving care to a patient having seizures and cardiac arrest, thereby saving his life," according to the citations. Edelen and Sanders were also recognized for actions on the Potomac River on Dec. 15, 2011, when they rescued a duck hunter whose boat had capsized into the frigid water. Sadly, another hunter on the same boat had already slipped beneath the water by the time the paramedics arrived on-scene. His body was recovered the next day. NSASP received a letter of thanks from the victim's family for the support provided during the tragedy. "The way you guys handled this event was appreciat-

community, just like ours in Colonial Beach. Each will be remembered with a smile, a laugh, a tear, a memory." Nette connected the sacrifices of yesterday to today's struggle against Islamic extremism. "In this era, the best defense is an assertive offense," he said. "That means a fighting Navy and its brothers in arms, our Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Coastguardsmen, and National Guard." It was a fighting Navy and an assertive offense that won the day for America 70 years ago at the Battle of Midway. "Some 70 years ago Americans engaged in a brutal four-day battle at Midway, in the Pacific," said Nette, at the May 30 Memorial Day ceremony on board NSF Dahlgren. "Prior to this action, the Japanese possessed naval superiority over the United States. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, they could usually choose when and where they wanted to attack. Japan seemed unstoppable." Through code-breaking, planning and above all, sacrifice, the tide was turned. "After the amazing sacrifice of Sailors and Marines at Midway, the two opposing fleets were essentially matched. The United States soon took the offense and the momentum of the war," said Nette. "Midway was a statement of the importance of naval power. It was a pitched battle of sacrifice

most of all it was a battle that showed the world what the Amer-

ican Sailor could do." The message was the same at the ceremony held later the same day at Indian Head's Village Green Pavilion. "The stories of courage at Midway are remarkable in every sense," said Nette. "From the stories of Sailors who stayed at their post until the bitter end, to stories of Sailors who rescued their shipmates from the sinking carrier (USS) Yorktown.

"This battle had many heroes: the code breakers who gave us the location and date of the battle, the shipyard workers who prepared the fleet, the Airmen and Marines who fought for Midway Island and the Sailors who fought at sea. The actions taken by the individuals who fought in this battle, the strength of their character and the firmness of their resolve is why this battle is so significant in our history."

Virginia Senator Mark Warner pledged his support for the Dahlgren Heritage Museum when he met with the project's board at the University of Mary Washington's (UMW's) Dahlgren Campus on May 21. Members of the Dahlgren Heritage Board highlighted how the museum will go beyond its primary, historical mission to benefit the community as a promoter of science, technology and environmental stewardship. "We feel that the museum and the benefits of the foundation for the community are tremendous," said Rudy Brabo, member of the King George County Board of Supervisors. "[The Dahlgren Heritage Museum] is the first of its kind and is going to be the model for future military museums." The Dahlgren Heritage Museum will be located at a site on loan from the Virginia Tourism Corporation for "10 bucks a year," according to Dr. Robert Gates, fundraising chair for the museum and a

Michael Smith, NSWCDD commander, during his tour of commands on NSF Dahlgren. former technical director at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD). The site, which currently houses an old visitor center, will serve as a tourism gateway to the Northern Neck. The museum will feature indoor displays inside the 3,000-square-foot facility and a walking trail to outdoor displays, which will include historic naval guns. While Naval Support Facility (NSF) Dahlgren is well

known for its role in the development of naval guns, Warner had not heard about its work at the dawn of the computer age. Gates described the room-sized Aiken Relay Calculator brought to Dahlgren in 1947. The machine famously failed due to a moth in the relays, the first instance of a computer "bug." The story impressedWarner and the board did not have to wait long to receive his endorsement.

"What can I do to help? he asked. Gates presented the board's concerns regarding the museums fund-raising, as [JUMP]well as the uncertainty surrounding its site at the old visitor center. Maryland's plans to renovate the Harry Nice Bridge involve the same ground, though that project has stalled due to the state's budget situation. "The rate of speed that Virginia, Maryland and the country is moving on infrastructure right now, it may be some time," said a half-jokingWarner, who later spoke at length about Congressional gridlock. Warner pledged work with [JUMP]potential donors, such as defense contractors and utilities, and said he would include language in the Senate version of a future National Defense Authorization Act supporting the museum. He also noted that federal funding for projects like the Dahlgren Heritage Museum may not be forthcoming. That fact was well understood by the board, which has had to explain to potential donors that, contrary to popular belief, the Dahlgren Her-

He also noted that federal funding for projects like the Dahlgren Heritage Museum may not be forthcoming. That fact was well understood by the board, which has had to explain to potential donors that, contrary to popular belief, the Dahlgren Heritage Museum is not federally funded. cent months. "Until we can get Democrats to agree that we've got to reform our entitlements, until we can get Republicans to agree we've got to reform our tax code, nothing is going to get fixed," said a clearly-frustrated Warner. When asked about the prospects of solving the federal budget gridlock, Warner said a solution would come due to sheer necessity, but pointed out the obstacles. "The institutional forces, the interest groups, the lobbying folks, they don't want to get it fixed," he said. "Or, they say 'we want to get it fixed, but don't touch mine.'" Political headaches aside, Warner praised the effort to make the Dahlgren Heritage Museum a reality. "I think it's a great vision," he said. "Dahlgren has played an important role for many, many years in the national defense. This would be a great place to highlight that." After the discussion, Warner and members of his staff drove on board Naval Support Facility (NSF) Dahlgren for a tour of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division's (NSWCDD's) electromagnetic rail gun facility, the Surface Warfare Mission Package (SUW MP) and the Gun Mission Module (GMM). Warner also met with leaders of the Joint Warfare Analysis Center. Warner was briefed on the programs' progress and capabilities before leaving base, but not before he told command officials that he would return.

New Veterans ID Card to be launched May 30 in Virginia The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Department of Veterans Services (DVS) have joined as partners to offer a veterans ID card to U.S. military veterans throughout the state. While retired military and veterans with a disability rating from Veterans Affairs are issued ID cards, other veterans had no way to show veteran status other than with a DD214, an official discharge document and not something most veterans carry with them. The Virginia Veterans ID card will allow vets to receive discounts from Virginia restaurants and retailers that offer discounts and other special promotions to veterans and military. The new veterans ID card will enable veterans to easily show veteran status and also will enable retailers, restaurants, and other organizations to easily verify the individual's status as a veteran. Veterans may begin applying for the card on May 30 through these DMV service outlets:

Pie in the face for a good cause Paramedics Continued from page 2

By Kimberly Lansdale, Center for Surface Combat Systems Sailors from the Aegis Training and Readiness Center (ATRC) participated in a Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Fundraiser coordinated by ATRC's Fire Controlman 1st Class Jeremiah Wright and Fire Controlman 2nd Class Stephen Ainley on Friday, May 18, outside by the gazebo. During the event, some participants got a little messy! The "Pie in the Face" contest not only raised money, but also Sailors' awareness about the importance of Sailors taking care of Sailors. "ATRC makes up a small percentage of the Fleet but we were able to raise over $1,000 for our shipmates," Wright said. The NMCRS provides nearly four million Sailors, Marines, and their families with financial assistance in the form of loans, grants, and scholarships. In addition, it provides services such as financial counseling. For a week and a half, ATRC military and civilians bid on military personnel. The top bidder for each candidate had the honor of throwing a pie into the face

The top seven selectees were (7) Fire Controlman 1st Class Jeremy Shevokas, (6) Chief Fire Controlman Christopher Odachowski, (5) Senior Chief Fire Controlman Charles Nobles, (4) Fire Controlman 1st Class Matthew Irwin, (3) Fire Controlman David Rogers, (2) Capt. Ian Hall, ATRC's commanding officer, and (1) Senior Chief Logistics Specialist Marvin Hayden, the command's senior enlisted leader. Right before the contest began, Cmdr. Kip Rossetti, ATRC's Executive Officer,

announced that he would partake in the contest if ATRC could reach the $1,000 mark. In less than five minutes, Sailors had donated enough money for Rossetti to take a pie in the face. With blueberries, pie crust, and whipped cream smeared upon their faces, all participants, including Hall, were all smiles. "I am a huge supporter of Sailors taking care of other Sailors and their family members," Hall explained. "If taking a pie in the face helped a shipmate, then it was well worth it."

Edelen, Hannah and Sanders saved another life on Apr. 18, when they gave lifesaving care to a 64-year-old female in cardiac arrest. The last firefighter-paramedic to be recognized was the firehouse rookie, Jeremy Misenhelder. He had less than two months on the job when he worked with Hannah and Sanders on May 9 to administer life-saving care to a 74-year-old female in cardiac arrest. All three men received Life-Saving Certificates for their actions. In addition to certificates, the firefighter-paramedics received a lapel pin denoting the number of lives each man has saved. The visual recognition has been an important feature of the Navy Fire and Emergency Service Program since 2010. "It shows you the significant and valuable service these guys provide," said Carl Glover, the Chief of Naval Installations Command (CNIC) director for Navy Fire and Emergency Services, who attended the ceremony. "We certainly appreciate them." For the rookie Misenhelder, the pin denoted one life saved. For the veteran Edelen, the pin denoted seven lives saved. "We're fortunate to have an advanced life support unit here at Indian Head," said Edelen. "In short, we can pretty much do everything for somebody in the back of our ambulance that they can do

for you in an emergency room, shy of three things: lab work, major surgical procedures and x-rays. If we're in a pinch, we have a radio and we can consult with any specialist in the Washington metropolitan area and get orders to do special [operations] and procedures." Edelen and firefighting leaders from NSASP and NDW praised a new piece of gear onboard NSF Indian Head's ambulance as a major upgrade in their life-saving capabilities. The Lifepak 15 defibrillator can administer drugs, provide electrical treatment and is capable of raising and lowering a patient's blood pressure. The technology is not cheap, but it provides the installation and region with the most advanced life-saving gear available. Of course, such technology is of limited use without skilled people to operate it. "Here at Indian Head, we're determined and we're aggressive," said Edelen. "That's why we do what we do. I think the guys here have the same attitude I do; we're determined to do the job and have a successful outcome. If you don't give up, you're going to have a good outcome. With that and the Lord on our side, we do a good job." Edelen had barely finished his remarks when a call interrupted the ceremony. He, along with Hannah, Misenhelder and Sanders scrambled to the ambulance to respond to an off-base call. A minor was suffering from a potential drug-overdose and needed immediate transport to the hospital. The minor, like the community around NSF Indian Head, was in good hands.
