'STEMposium' takes over Dahlgren School By Andrew Revelos NSASP Staff Writer Former elementary and middle school students of a certain age may be hard-pressed to remember experiments as lively and engaging as the ones taken on by students of the Dahlgren School at a May 3 "STEMposium." Parents joined students and teachers at the culmination of the week long event to see the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experiments prepared by each class. A panel of STEM professionals with the Naval SurfaceWarfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) addressed students in the Advancement Via Individual Achievement (AVID) program just before parents arrived. Their message to students was simple: understand the process of problem-solving and apply yourself. "If you have a work schedule, time you can dedicate to homework, instead of waiting to the last second to finish everything, it will benefit you," said Stephen Dix, a system safety engineer. Dixon volunteered his time alongside NSWCDD employees LaChanda Anaganwoke, Joel Gillespie and Kelvin Medina. "We are fortunate to have great engineer role models here at Dahlgren," said Alice Herring, principal of the Dahlgren School. "We thank them for showing their enthusiasm as panel participants, guest speakers, and mentors." Herring said teachers appreciated the message of the panel. "When

panel members mentioned team work, organization, being able to summarize their findings and communication as key components to their success, the students asked, 'Did our teachers pay you to say that?'," recounted Herring. "While they didn't pay the panel to say that, they all certainly agree." Teachers worked to not only bring home the importance of those skills, but to do so in a way that looked suspiciously like fun. Students in music class made phonographs; middle school students experimented with Lego robotics; fifth graders made Angry Birds launchers in what was the most raucous and popular experiment of the day.

Aegis BMD security officer recognized By Andrew Revelos NSASP Staff Writer

A security officer for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Field Activity, the Dahlgren-based arm of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), was recognized for superior performance of duties in the workplace, dependability and community service. For Pam Hall, COGAR Security Group Officer of the Year, customer service just comes naturally. For the last four years, employees at Aegis BMD have come to recognize Hall's smiling face and happy personality. The Missouri-born, Virginiaraised security officer has worked in a variety of positions onboard Naval Support facility (NSF) since she took her first job on base 28 years ago. "I started out in food service in 1984," said Hall, explaining the importance of customer service throughout her career. "I've done customer service my entire life. I'm a fast learner and I can pick up anything."

Pam Hall, security officer for the COGAR Security Group at the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense, was recognized as the COGAR Officer of the Year for her superior customer service, dependability and community service.

Like many military contractors, Hall has grown attached to her clientele, whose observations were an important part of the award calculus. "It feels great to be recognized by the people I serve," she said. "It's an honor." Hall recently moved up in her job to a cameramonitoring position and spoke about her day-today experience. "Staying focused isn't always easy," she said. "I have to make sure that if, for instance, someone falls in the parking lot, I'm watching." Hall's concern for the welfare of others is not confined to the workplace, however. When a massive tornado devastated the town of Joplin, Mo. in May of last year, Hall used her vacation to help tornado victims. "I have an 86-year old aunt who lives in Joplin," she said. "Every street around her house was wiped out; her house and a few others were the only ones in the area that were still standing."

Historic grill dedicated at Stump Neck By Andrew Revelos NSASP Staff Writer

Across America, grilling season has begun in earnest for friends and families. A different type of family, however, dedicated a very special grill at an Apr. 17 cookout at Naval Support Facility Indian Head's Stump Neck Annex.. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Techs from all military branches, as well as EOD civilians who served in Iraq, may recognize the behemoth custom grill: it served as a downtime focal point at the "Alamo," part of the compound that housed Joint Task Force Troy in Baghdad. There, the first-ever Combined Explosives Exploitation Cell (CEXC, pronounced 'sexy') assembled intelligence specialists and explosive experts in 2003 to combat the deadly threat posed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Members of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the Technical Support Detachment of the Naval EOD Technology Division (NAVEODTECHDIV) at Stump Neck Annex, law enforcement and international allies combined efforts to share knowledge about IEDs and minimize the damage they cause. Volumes could be written about that effort, but reminiscing about the war's big details was not the main reason personnel associated with CEXC met on the shores of the Potomac River. They met to share memories about one of the war's few pleasures. Master Chief Logistics Specialist Sol Costin and Logistics Specialist 1st Class Jarriel Gardner received the grill from Iraq in March. A Stump Neckbased Navy contractor said he was at the Alamo when a machine shop for armored vehicles added a thick steel smoker box. The armored pedigree shows: the grill appeared to be literally bulletproof, even if its journey into Navy possession is not exactly clear.

"Somebody put some work into it," said Cmdr. Paco Porter, officerin-charge of the Technical Support Detachment. "If it could talk, it could tell some stories." The aforementioned contractor, who asked to be called only by his first name, spent six years in Iraq. "It was great as long as the food was good," said Robert, who remembered the many holiday meals cooked on the grill. "It kept morale up. It made you feel like you were in someone's back yard." Another contractor laughed when he remembered acquiring a box of steaks in anticipation of a big meeting. By the time the meeting occurred, the steaks had disappeared. As always, ownership in a war zone is a fickle thing. Master Sgt.Will Cameron, an Air Force EOD Tech, remembered the spirit of the Alamo. "We'd grab as

much food as we could and cook it," he said. "The grill is pretty neat because of its history." Costin provided the burgers for grill's first CONUS get-together and explained the grill's significance. All EOD Techs received training at the Alamo when they arrived in-country. "Every EOD Tech who served in Iraq ate off this grill," he said. "Some of them did not come back."

Teacher JackieWorthy's 4th grade "mined" for chocolate with two different types of chocolate chip cookies in an exercise that was startlingly comprehensive. Students not only had to calculate the cost of using different tools to extract chocolate, but also had to consider the value of the leftover cookie. The more damaged the cookie, the greater the cost of environmental cleanup. Herring said the STEMposium experiments' close resemblance to the real world was by design. "The aim of the STEMposium was to kick off the use of the engineering process with students, parents and teachers to problem solve by using science, technology and math," she said. "In the future, we hope to see current Dahlgren students serving in science and math fields and seeing the application of science and math in real world solutions." partment of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) for the New York, Virginia and Puerto Rico district, applauded the STEMposium. "This is my first visit to the Dahlgren School and I'm very impressed," she said. For Gafford, the STEMposium is a small but important piece of a bigger picture. "STEM education is a big push within the Department of Defense (DoD) because [military leaders] know they need people in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math," she said. "So they've partnered with DODEA to put STEM professionals into each of our high schools to talk about their fields and how education prepared them to take on their projects." Dahlgren, said Gafford, is uniquely qualified to undertake such a partnership. "Dahlgren is the perfect place for this because there are so many STEM professionals here," she said. "It is a community of engineers and scientists and so students here have been able to learn from people who know how important it is to focus in school."

Dahlgren Training Center promotes Sexual Assault Awareness The Aegis Training and Readiness Center's (ATRC) Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) observed Sexual Assault Awareness Month by having an art competition for Sailors to promote sexual awareness through the expression of art. The winners were announced at the ATRC's awards ceremony in the Arleigh Burke Auditorium April 27. Teams of Sailors, not to exceed three, or individual Sailors were highly encouraged to partake in the art contest. The art could be in whatever form the Sailor or Sailors found value in but in good taste. Submissions consisted of drawings, posters, and even poetry. Fire Controlman 3rd Class Erica Placeres and Fire Controlman 3rd Class Samantha Wolfe, SPY students, won 1st

place with their poster that conveyed the inability of victims to speak out due to the stigma associated with sexual assault. "The only way to have victims feel comfortable in stepping forward is to raise awareness of the support that the Navy offers to those who are in need," explained Placeres. "The photos are of Sailors from this command to highlight that anyone can be a victim and that it is all of our duties to face this issue head on." Fire Controlman 3rd Class Meagan Hicks, also a SPY student, won second place with her drawing titled 'Raise Your Voice' that emphasized the importance of being an active bystander. "I attended a sexual assault presentation at Central Michigan University entitled 'No Zebras, No Excuses' when I was

stationed at Great Lakes," Hicks said. "When a zebra is attacked by a lion, the other zebras will watch and not intervene. My interpretation was that we cannot be zebras. We need to intervene and raise our voice not just in April, but throughout the year." ATRC's tactical maintenance staff member, Fire Controlman 3rd Class Jonathan Walters, won third place with his creativeness. Walters wrote a poem titled "Silently Waiting" that expressed the silence of a victim and how that impacts the life of the victim. "I wrote this poem to bring awareness on how sexual assault affects the victim," explained Walters. "The victim has to live with this for the rest of his or her life...they will never forget." Fire Controlman 1st Class Earl Ashley, a work center su-

pervisor for ATRC's training support directorate and currently ATRC's Support Person of the Quarter, was the contest coordinator. "ATRC's CSADD wanted to provide Sailors an opportunity to express their thoughts about sexual assault through a creative outlet rather than the standard power point presentation," Ashley said. "Our winning submissions clearly illustrate how sexual assault impacts all." ATRC's CSADD was established in March 2011 and one of the main goals of this organization is prevention. Working with some "very nice" missionaries, Hall worked to ensure victims received clothes. "I volunteered with my niece and her three little boys," she said. "We sorted through thousands of boxes of clothes and separated them by sizes. As [tornado victims] came to pick them up, we made sure they were on the list." Because the three boys relished the work so much, Hall declined an opportunity to rotate to another volunteer task, one which would have kept her out of the elements. "We spent three days sorting out clothes in 100-degree weather," said Hall, who grinned at the memory. Hall's volunteer effort came as no surprise to COGAR's senior supervisor at

Aegis BMD. "That's just the way she is," said Terry Lanham. Lanham had high praise for Hall's qualities on-the-job, too. "Pam sets the standard," she said. "Her customer service skills set her apart from the rest. Customers and visitors love her. She's always got that smile. It's what she brings to work with her every day. It's the first thing our customers see when they come in morning and the last thing they see when they leave in the evening." Lanham was very happy Hall was recognized for all she contributes. "Pam definitely deserves to be the Officer of the Year," said Lanham. "She goes above and beyond and is 100-percent dedicated to [COGAR] and [MDA]. You can't turn her off."

The Naval Support Activity South Potomac Birthday Ball Committee will host a burger burn every Wednesday until October 2012 at the First Lieutenant's Bldg. #453 on the water near the flagpole on Sampson Rd. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds benefit the NSASP Navy Ball 2012.

Dahlgren to Host 4th of July Event

NSF Dahlgren will host a base open house for July 4th. Gates open at 3 p.m., event begins at 4 p.m. Live performances by Glass Onion Band and Nelson, the sons of the late Ricky Nelson. Event will include games and crafts for kids, a car show, Operation Rising Star military singing competition, food for sale and fireworks at 9:15 p.m. All are invited to attend.

Indian Head IH Spouses' Club Opens "Treasures" Thrift Store

NSWC IH Division's PHS&T Center receives safety award For the third consecutive year, New Jersey's State Industrial Safety Committee recognized Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division's (NSWC IHD) Packaging, Handling, Shipping and Transportation (PHS&T) Division for maintaining an injury free workplace during 2011 at the annual Governor's Occupational Safety and Health Awards dinner on May 2. This year the PHS&T Division earned the State of New Jersey's Department of Labor and Workforce Development Safety Achievement Award by maintaining a workplace free from lost time for work-related injuries or illnesses for three straight years. PHS&T earned the Division of Public Safety and Occupational Safety and Health Award for

2010 following its Citation of Merit Award for 2009. Located at NSWC IHD's Picatinny, N.J., Detachment, the PHS&T Division relocated to Picatinny Arsenal from the Naval Weapons Station in Earle, N.J., during the Department of Defense's 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process last year. According to Ken Zimms, PHS&T Division Director, moving from Earle to Picatinny involved new safety risks that supervisors needed to monitor. "BRAC was a very big challenge as people did take it upon themselves to move things," Zimms said. "We stopped a few people from trying to move heavy things like computer towers and boxes of books. We also hired a lot of young people who are more willing to do

things themselves and not fully assess the risks involved." Zimms also said managers and supervisors continually stress safety throughout PHS&T whether it's ensuring people always don the proper safety gear, developing good operating procedures or maintaining good housekeeping. That adherence to higher safety standards is a prominent theme throughout NSWC IHD. At the main site on Naval Support Facility Indian Head, Md., the command went through the final phase of its application for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) in February 2012. Ray Geckle, NSWC IHD's Safety Director, said managers play an integral

role in safety promotion within the command. "Having organizational leaders who take the time to recognize their employees' safety accomplishments goes to the core of our VPP message," Geckle said. "This type of employee recognition engages our employees and helps align them with our safety goals, while we meet and exceed business objectives." As the largest Department of Defense full-spectrum energetics facility, NSWC Indian Head Division is one of 10 Naval Sea Systems Command Warfare Center Divisions. Indian Head's mission is to research, develop, test, evaluate and produce energetics and energetic systems for fighting forces around the globe.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed for an event at the PetSmart at Central Park in Fredericksburg June 7 - 10. Last Chance Animal Rescue is sponsoring a mega adoption event and they would like to extend this partnership to the military. Their goal is to place more than 600 dogs in one weekend! They are expecting some 20,000 people to come and will have live radio/media coverage. Virginians can save money and get ready for hurricane/flooding season during the Commonwealth's tax-free shopping week set for May 25-31. No sales tax is charged on the purchase of many items that can be used to prepare homes and businesses and to fill emergency supply kits during Virginia's Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. All retailers participate, according to Virginia law.

CSCS selects financial technician as Civilian of the Quarter By Kimberly Lansdale, Center for Surface Combat Systems

Mike Poreda, Navy Air and Missile Defense Command "Contractor of the Quarter," receives a citation from Rear Admiral M. Stewart O'Bryan during a recent awards ceremony. Poreda was recognized for defining capabilities to address fleet interoperability issues.

NAMDC contractor of the quarter Navy Air and Missile Defense Command recognized its Contractor of the Quarter during an April 18 awards ceremony. Mike Poreda, HiPK, who works in the command's training and assessment division, was recognized for assisting in the development, testing and implementation of the Accelerated Mid-Term Interoperability Improvement Program (AMIIP). AMIIP addresses Fleet war

fighting capabilities that have been severely degraded by long-standing, force-wide interoperability issues. "Mike joined our team just four months ago and he has already made a positive impact on all our programs," said Rear Admiral M. Stewart O'Bryan. Since retiring from the Navy in 1996, he has been involved in Test and Evaluation of the Cooperative Engagement Capability, Composite

ID system, as well as the development of Multi Tadil Processor, and Area Air Defense Commander prototype. Poreda is also active with the American Legion and VFW. He is post commander of VFW Post 10574 in Colonial Beach. NAMDC is the Navy's primary authority and lead organization for Naval Joint and Coalition Integrated Air and Missile Defense matters.

Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) announced its Civilian of the Quarter (COQ) for the first quarter of 2012 on May 4. "I was stunned when I first received the news," said Financial Technician Kelly Boushey. "I have only been part of CSCS' resource management team for about a year, but I'm very thankful to receive such an award." Boushey joined the budget team in May 2011. She provides support to financial analysts, tracks Military Standard Requisitioning and Issue Procedures (MILSTRIPs), makes credit card purchases as a backup purchase card holder and accepts and certifies vendor invoices. Boushey is also her department's internal control program coordinator. "I love everything about my job," Boushey said. "I enjoy my duties and coworkers."

Boushey's supervisor, Terry Dirscherl, budget officer for resource management, nominated her for the award. "Kelly is a valuable member of this department," said Dirscherl. "From the time Kelly checked onboard, she displayed a willingness and desire to learn everything there is to know about her job, from her piece of the puzzle to our stakeholders'. Her energy never ceases to amaze her coworkers and I." Officially established in September 2004, CSCS headquarters' staff oversees 14 learning sites that provide training for nine enlisted ratings: Fire Controlmen, Electronics Technicians, Interior Communications, Sonar Technicians (surface), Gunner's Mates, Minemen, Operations Specialists, Boatswain's Mates, and Quartermasters. CSCS also trains surface warfare officers in skills required to tactically operate and employ Aegis and Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) equipped vessels.

Digital images should be at a resolution of at least 300 dpi and no smaller than 2-by-3 inches, and should be emailed as stand-alone attachments

(not embedded in a Word or PowerPoint document). All submissions must include the graduate's name, school, prospective college if applicable, and type of degree if applicable. Please also include your name, command and organizational code, a contact phone number, and your relationship to the graduate. All photos that are not submitted electronically need to be picked up no later than July 13. Photos can be submitted electronically to jeron.hayes@navy.mil, or hard copy photos can be dropped off at NSF Dahlgren in the Public Affairs Office, Bldg. 101, Room 109, or at the NSF Indian Head Gymnasium, Bldg.
