Interesting Things to Know About the Lunar New Year Many of the traditions and superstitions associated with Lunar New Year date back for centuries. The Lunar New Year is taken seriously by a lot of people throughout the world. The 12-year Chinese zodiac determines which dates and years are auspicious or unlucky; many large corporations still reference it before making important decisions! You don’t necessarily need to base your life choices on the zodiac, but reading about your animal sign and how it corresponds with the upcoming lunar new year is fun. Lunar New Year Is About New Potential Nearly all of the traditions and superstitions observed during Lunar New Year serve one purpose: to usher in as much good fortune and prosperity in the new year as possible. Clutter is removed, old debts are forgiven, and things are arranged in a way to receive as much incoming luck as can be grabbed. People who follow tradition don’t sweep during Lunar New Year for fear that they will sweep away incoming luck. The same applies to cutting and severing; hair, plants, and even noodles shouldn’t be cut during the festival.
The Date for Lunar New Year Isn’t Fixed The date for Lunar New Year varies from year to year because it is based on the lunisolar calendar. Although dates differ, the holiday always falls sometime in January or February. The Holiday Is Actually 15 Days Long The whole Chinese New Year holiday actually lasts fifteen days. There will be celebrations and events going on over the duration of the whole holiday. The number of days declared as public holidays when businesses are closed varies country by country. The final day of the 15-day festival is known as the Lantern Festival. The First Day Is the Most Important Somewhat predictably, the most important days of Lunar New Year are Lunar New Year’s Eve and the first day of Lunar New Year. The latter is traditionally the day for the Chinese New Year parade in Hong Kong. People in Hong Kong will take two or three days off work, while on the mainland they take up to a week away from work. Lunar New Year Is the Biggest Holiday in the World It’s estimated that a sixth of the world’s
population celebrates Lunar New Year, including more than 1 billion Chinese citizens. In recent years, celebrations in New York, London, and other global cities have spread from the local Chinatowns to become mainstream events hosted by the cities. Lunar New Year even rivals Christmas as the world’s most celebrated event. Ironically, at the same time, Christmas is catching on more and more in Asia. The Largest Human Migration Happens Each Chinese New Year LunarNew Year causes the world’s largest human migration as Chinese workers travel home to spend time with their families. The migration event, known as Chunyun, sets a new record each year as the Chinese population grows. Yes, Lunar New Year will most definitely affect your travels in Asia! In China, where much of the migration takes place, it’s been claimed that trains are so overcrowded people have to wear adult diapers for their 24-hour journeys home. Chinese New Year Causes a Record Number of Text Messages The world record for most text messages sent in a day is broken each year during Lunar New Year. The current record was 19 billion.
Even the practice of giving red envelopes (hong bao) with money inside has been digitized. People can send small gifts to friends, family, and employees digitally via China’s messaging apps. The Lunar Calendar Is Way Ahead of the Gregorian Per the Lunar calendar, Lunar New Year in 2019 begins the year 4716. The future seems to have arrived because year numbering was once based on the whim of emperors and when they decided a new era had begun. Lunar New Year Isn’t Just in China Lunar New Year isn’t only celebrated in China. In Vietnam, the Lunar New Year is called Tet. Singapore and some other Asian countries also celebrate the East Asian Lunar New Year, although January 1 and the Western New Year’s Eve is observed, too. Of course, Lunar New Year is celebrated in Chinatowns around the world. China Goes Big With Fireworks Always a country that likes to do things big and set records, China has often grabbed the record for the world’s largest organized fireworks display during Lunar New Year. The Philippines secured the current world record in 2016.

10 foods to eat for the Lunar New Year Every Lunar New Year, families gather around for a massive meal that’s loaded with symbolic dishes. Each dish is said to bring luck and good fortune in the coming year. While traditions and specific dishes may vary by family and region, some are more common than others.
Pomelos
Radish cake
It’s common to find these big citrus fruits adorning tables during Chinese New Year. In Chinese, the word pomelo sounds like the word “to have,” so it signifies having more things in the new year, like prosperity and status. It wouldn’t be Lunar New Year without a bowl of longevity noodles. Many believe that these long noodles are symbolic of a long life, so try not to bite or break them when eating. Slurping encouraged!
Ring in the Year of the Pig with these 10 essential dishes.
You may have seen these little vegetable cakes served as dim sum, but they’re also a traditional good luck food served around Lunar New Year. In Chinese, the word for radish also sounds like the word for “good fortune” which is why it’s common to see these crispy, pan-fried veggie cakes served during new year celebrations.
Sesame balls These fried dough balls are best eaten fresh out of the fryer. The sticky treats are filled with red bean paste and covered in sesame seeds. As the balls of dough fry they expand, so it is believed that if you eat these your fortunes will expand similarly.
Tray of Togetherness Jai On Lunar New Year, the first dish eaten is typically vegetarian. This stems from a Buddhist tradition that believes that vegetables purify and cleanse the body and soul. Jai, also known as Buddha’s Delight, is a vegetable stew that’s cooked with upwards of 16 different types of vegetables.
The Tray of Togetherness is a Chinese candy platter with either six or eight ingredients (six for good luck, eight for fortune), ranging from dried fruits and vegetables to nuts and other small candies or treats. Contents vary from household to household, but each of the snacks is said to bring luck and good fortune in the new year.
Tangerines Tangerines are a symbol of happiness and prosperity in China. During Chinese New Year, it’s common for friends and family to give each other tangerines, preferably with the stem still attached, as those represent longevity.
Longevity noodles
Prosperity cakes In Chinese, these rice flour cakes are called “fa gao.” The name of the cake itself is a pun. “Fa” means both prosperity and leavened or raised, which is why these fluffy, dense cakes are known as prosperity cakes. When baked, they split on top and “blossom.” The more petals have blossomed, the more prosperous you will be.
Yau gok Yao gok are sweet, deep-fried dumplings filled with nuts, sugar, dried coconut, and sesame seeds. Their shape resembles silver and gold ingots, an ancient Chinese currency, so they’re believed to bring wealth and good fortune.
Whole chicken or fish It’s important that both chicken and fish are served whole on Chinese New Year. A whole chicken, from beak to feet, symbolizes unity and family togetherness. A whole steamed fish, eyeballs and all, symbolizes abundance.
