From the Publisher Most of you probably know and have already signed up for Gaston Alive online. But just in case you haven’t- we now have a weekly online newsletter that contains some of our best printed features, and also a lot of cool stuff that we don’t have room for in print. As our cover says, it includes “home, garden, style, fun, food and happenings.” Which means everything from barbecue to baseball, and formal events to farmers markets. If you haven’t already, go to Gastonalive.com, scroll to the bottom to find the pop up and sign up. Don’t miss out on the latest and greatest in Gaston County! It’s not often that we have four different writers in a single issue of GA. We love all of our contributors, but want to say a special welcome to Brie Hays, our new interior design columnist. We also have an article by Carolina girl Heather McConnell Brown about kids and summer boredom... if you have kids it’s a must read! Enjoy!
PS Did you catch it? Any Latin scholars out there? We named the flower on our cover in last month’s issue “Aprilis Stultorum”...which means- April fools!

Living, Loving &
Leftovers BY BEN DuNGAN
The year was 1993. A man named Meat Loaf topped the music charts in 28 countries with the song “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)”.
It’s been over 26 years now and after 67 million views on the official Youtube video, no one had been quite sure what the word ‘that’ means in the song - until now. I finally figured it out. Mr. Loaf won’t give up his personal collection of Chinese food soup containers. With a name like Meat Loaf, you’re bound to have leftovers from time to time, and thus, you need something to store said leftovers in. Nothing does the job better than the Chinese food soup container. 6 gastonalive.com | facebook.com/gastonalive
You know the ones - the “no frills-no spills” translucent 16-ounce containers that at one time transported your Wonton soup from your favorite Chinese restaurant safely and effectively back to your house. These containers may not have the brand recognition of Tupperware, but these just might be better than Tupperware. At least you don’t have to attend a party to acquire them. You just have to order soup to go at the Chinese restaurant.
When two people come together and decide to merge their lives under one roof, some things have to go. You have to make room for the other person’s stuff. Relationships are all about give and take. Or in my case, keep or trash. I knew I had way too many food storage containers. It was a hodgepodge mix of this and that. Gladware containers intermingling with Rubbermaid and Ziplock containers. It was a collection of lids that didn’t have a match. Let’s be honest - it was one big mess. So when my girlfriend told me my food storage collection had to go, I was in full agreement. Except, for my Chinese food soup containers. I would do anything for love. My girlfriend knows that. But I won’t do that. I just can’t part with them. They are the best. Easy to find. Easy to match the lid and the container. Stacks well and the lid is always secure. No second guessing with these guys. You can haul solid food or soup again. Their tag line could be “No frills, no spills, no worries.”
They’re not sexy. There’s no fancy labels. No fancy colors or designs. No fancy layout. Just your basic round 16-ounce container - the perfect portion size for any occasion. We never ate Chinese food when I was a kid. But we apparently loved to eat Cool Whip. My mom would always save the Cool Whip containers for the same reason I save the Chinese food soup containers. They were also easy to match up the lid and the container, they were stackable and the lids were always secure. However, there was one problem - you couldn’t see through them. My mom would work around that issue. She would find a permanent marker laying around the house and would simply on the lid. It might say “Mac & Cheese”, “Spaghetti” or even “Meatloaf”. Growing up in my house, you just knew a Cool Whip container in the fridge never meant you actually had Cool Whip. All you knew was that at some point in the past you probably had Cool Whip, but not anymore. It meant you had leftovers.
Food storage containers have come a long way in 25 years. No longer does one have to keep or collect Cool Whip or even Chinese food storage containers anymore. You can buy inexpensive, colorful sets in just about any store today. So my girlfriend and I did what all great couples do at the end of the day - we compromised. I kept my Chinese food soup containers, and she decided to go out and buy the colorful 20-piece Glad Matchware Variety Pack featuring what the product description calls a ‘charming design’ on each container. Mine are just functional. Hers are functional and pretty. Which brings to mind something that I’ve known for a while, but needed the reminder. It was Chris-in-the-Morning, the wise and quirky radio DJ from the hit television series Northern Exposure that offered this important piece of advice to a friend who was trying to understand women. Chris said, “What do women want? Same things we do, only in prettier colors.” Take heed, fellas. This is the secret to a happy home. gastonalive.com | facebook.com/gastonalive 7
Grandiflora: Gamrath Glass at
L
et your mind wander for a moment and imagine yourself in a tropical rainforest. You’re walking along a lush path with tillandsia and showy orchids growing overhead and bromeliads blooming at your feet. A waterfall can be heard in the distance as you pass the large leaves of monstera, a familiar fiscus, cocoa and citrus trees, palms of all shapes and sizes and a plethora of exotic flowering plants. But the most stunning of all you realize upon rounding the bend, is a bold orchid towering over you at nearly 12 feet tall. The enlarged details take you by surprise and you turn to realize you’re standing among grand botanicals like you’ve never seen them before. An energetic 6-foot Venus flytrap grins in your direction, vivid four-foot pitcher plants wait with cupped leaves agape for their next meal, and oversized orchid blossoms pop with color around you. While this sounds like an experience from a science fiction novel, it can actually be found close to home this summer. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden near Charlotte, North Carolina, will host an awe-inspiring, larger-than-life botanical glass exhibit, Grandiflora: Gamrath Glass at the Garden, opening Friday, May 24. Guests will be mesmerized by nearly 40 vibrant installations made up of hundreds of pieces of glass by Seattle-based artist Jason Gamrath including gigantic orchids, pitcher plants, Venus flytraps, columbine flowers, a corpse flower and more scattered throughout the Visitor Pavilion, tropical Orchid Conservatory and outdoor garden spaces. The immensity of Gamrath’s botanical works captivates audiences and calls attention to the beauty of normally tiny details within the natural world. “The most beautiful, extravagant man-made object could never creatively equal the simplest and smallest naturally occurring life form,” said Gamrath. “The purpose of creating this series on a macro scale is to bring to light 8 gastonalive.com | facebook.com/gastonalive
the beauty that exists within the micro scale of nature. Small plants, although minuscule in comparison to our human-sized way of existing, are overwhelmingly perplexing when held inches away from one’s face. When I scale life forms up to be larger than a person, they can be observed with this perspective from across a room due to the overwhelming physical presence they command. I encourage people to attempt to observe with the same eyes through which I humbly and graciously experience our natural world.”
abundant in fluttering butterflies native to North Carolina and a colorful display of their favorite plants, and enjoy a cold beverage and live music in the Beer Garden on select evenings.
Grandiflora: Gamrath Glass at the Garden is the first of its kind at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, but follows cultural art exhibits such as ZimSculpt
A Seattle area native, Gamrath began studying glass sculpting at the young age of 15 and has worked and trained with many renowned artists including Preston Singletary, Karen Willenbrink, Richard Royal, Ross Richmond and

He studied at the world’s most comprehensive center for glass art education, Pilchuck Glass School in Washington, which was founded by world-famous glass artist Dale Chihuly and patrons Anne Gould Hauberg and John H. Hauberg in addition to Seattle’s Pratt Fine Arts Center. This summer the gardens will feature big, bold, beautiful plants with large flowers and leaves to complement Gamrath’s sculptures and the Garden’s perennial displays. Gamrath’s work is collected internationally and the pieces on display at the Garden will also be available for purchase while smaller pieces will also be available in The Garden Store. In addition, during the day guests can explore the Butterfly Bungalow, a pollinators’ paradise
and a Chinese Lantern Festival. The Garden, which opened the doors of its Visitor Pavilion in 1999, celebrates 20 years of horticultural beauty in 2019 just 30 minutes from uptown Charlotte in Belmont, North Carolina. Today the breathtaking Visitor Pavilion welcomes visitors to 110 acres of formal garden spaces including a children’s garden, a conservatory dedicated to the display of tropical plants and orchids, annual and perennial displays, sparkling fountains, walking trails and more. Guests can experience this unique exhibit daily May 24 through Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also in the evenings Thursdays through Sundays May 30 through Sept. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. Admission to the Garden and exhibit is $14.95 per adult, $12.95 per senior ages 60 and up, $7.95 per child ages 2 through 12, free for children under age 2, and free for Garden Members from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while Garden Members receive a 30% discount on admission for evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for daytime admission and both online and at the door for evening admission.

Decorating Doesn’t Have to Be Daunting...
Decorating a room can be a daunting task, but it shouldn’t be. I recently finished styling our sunroom. It’s a room where our family spends a lot of time hanging out, reading and, to be honest, checking our phones. But it had become cluttered and it was no longer an inviting space. The first question to ask yourself is, “What is the purpose of this room?” Is it a place for relaxing while binge-watching Netflix? A study hall for kids and school projects? Once you have determined the room’s purpose, ask yourself, “What do I want to highlight?” The answer is almost always the room’s best feature. In the case of the sunroom it was the peaceful view of our shaded yard.
10 gastonalive.com | facebook.com/gastonalive
The best advice I always give is to start with an inspiration piece. It can be a photo of a room from Pinterest, a painting you’ve always loved, or even a swatch of fabric. This inspiration piece should determine the color palette and define the mood of the room. For the sunroom, I found a magazine image of a beautiful conservatory. Once you have determined what your “look” is, it becomes much easier to shop. When you are considering a purchase, ask “Does it fit the mood I am creating for this room?” If it doesn’t, put it back. For this sunroom, I knew I wanted to create a worldly vibe with comfortable seating, lots of texture, and plants everywhere. I found the perfect starting point in a striped, slipcovered armchair in the clearance section at Ikea. It was a floor model and a fantastic deal for a cozy chair with classic lines. The bonus was a washable slipcover which is always a great idea when you have kids and pets. I purchased a second chair at full price to make a set; when you find a chair or lamp you like, purchase two because they almost always look better in pairs. Once you have a comfortable place to sit, you need somewhere to put down your book or coffee (or phone). So, for this room, I looked for end tables and a coffee table with long, thin legs that wouldn’t take up too much visual weight. And you don’t have to buy everything new. One of my favorite ideas is to shop your own house. If you only bring things you truly love in to your home, you’ll be surprised how often they can work in many different rooms. This room was large enough that I could fit an old table I had refinished in the corner- perfect for puzzles or homework projects. A couple of rattan chairs pushed up to the table add texture and also create extra seating, as they can easily be moved around the room. A few plant stands and a bookcase I borrowed from the home office rounded out the furniture for the room. I knew this room would be getting a lot of traffic from the backyard, so I used a small seagrass mat for wiping feet at the door. Seagrass is like Snapchateverything disappears after a few moments! For the floor, I found a durable wool rug with enough subtle color and pattern to disguise all of the red clay and dirt that was sure to wander in on paws and shoes. Then I had to consider lighting because even with a room of windows, you have to plan for cloudy days and night time. To bounce around more light on the windowless wall, I added molding to two long mirrors to mimic windows. Mirrors should always reflect something pretty. Hanging the mirrors to flank the doors also creates symmetry, which is always pleasing to the eye. I found some light fixtures that would create a warm glow and enable reading or games at night. Finally, it was time to choose a paint color. So often people want to pick paint first, but that should rank so much farther down on your ‘to do’ list! Find your rug, your furniture, and your fabrics first. There are literally millions of shades of paint colors and it is far easier to find paint that will work with the undertones of your furniture and fabrics than to have to decorate around a paint color you chose when the room was almost empty! In this room, I wanted the walls to melt into the background so I picked a lovely pale taupe. I painted the fifth wall, the ceiling, a dusky blue, to bring the color of the sky indoors and tie in with the palette of the rest of the house. I always finish a room with some meaningful accessories that inject personality into the room. In this case, it was some equestrian art, favorite books and pictures, along with a jungle full of botanicals. You should surround yourself with the things you love so that the room feels like you. The end result is a room where everyone wants to hang out, even when the sun is down. With the right plan, you can decorate every room in your home! Summer is Time for the Kids to be ...
Bored?
By Heather McConnell Brown
With summer on the horizon many people start to ponder summer vacations. Especially those with school aged children and their impending break. I would like to ask those that have children to please consider this article when planning your vacation and your upcoming summer.
Parting Thoughts
A
fter being in the classroom, I have come to realize that so many of our traditions of childhood and summer have gone by the wayside. I know many of you now have minivans equipped with DVD players that can easily accommodate movies and even games. Let me preface this article with: .I have been there. I know what a four hour plus car ride is like with little children. I know just how easy it is to pop in a movie. I’m not asking for you to give up your peace - I’m just asking for you to consider integrating a few of these things into your summer. i Card games - yes, please bring out UNO, Old Maid, teach them Go Fish, Spades, Rummy, Hearts, War, Solitaire - teach them how to shuffle cards. i While you are out to eat and waiting on your food - play Tic-tac-Toe. I was amazed this year when I assigned a project and told them to pick three squares, like Tic-Tac-Toe and the clueless looks they gave me. I know we live in a digital world now - but these children need to know how to play games and entertain themselves not using digital devices. These suggestions are just a few. i Grab some sidewalk chalk at the dollar store - draw a hopscotch pattern and play! Grab a beanbag or rock and play! Throw in some history and tell them about how Roman soldiers played hopscotch to test their strength and speed. i Alphabet Car Game - I’m sure everyone reading this article has played this game. Play on a road trip while it’s still daylight - save the movie for when it’s dark. You will have your kids racing to beat mom and dad and especially their siblings. i Dominos - You would be surprised at how much they will enjoy building and watching. This will also help them learn patience...and something they very rarely experience nowadays...delayed gratification. With electronics and social media everything is instant. To see them experience dominos for the first time is always an awesome experience. i Hula hoop- Grab one and join in on the fun. This is bound to give you and them laughter. Purchase two if you are good and beat them! i Jump rope - Teach them the songs, that you sung on the playground. i Pick up a fishing pole - This is by far one of my fondest memories. Sitting on the pier - at the beach or the lake…I could sit for hours and fish. i Boredom - Yes, I know this one is an easy one and good news it’s free! But let your little ones experience boredom. The last time you were probably bored was when the internet was down. Think about this from the eyes of your children. When we were bored growing up, this is when we played - outside, made up games, painted, got dirty in the mud. Boredom indeed sews the seeds of creativity in our children. Give your children the gift of boredom - this will fuel their creativity and in doing so it will help in brain growth. Remember their frontal lobe is not fully developed until they are 27. Studies have even shown how due to the lack of boredom - children and young adults don’t know how to handle down time. They can’t unplug - and this is causing more anxiety and stress than ever before in our young people. So this summergive them boredom - and you might just be helping with not only their creative forces now but anxiety later. There is absolutely nothing wrong with boredom - and being able to find your own solution to boredom is nothing short of fantastic! Let them pump their legs to see how high they can go on the swings, let them play outside and get dirty - not just push buttons on an iPad or TV. I realize the notion of setting aside time to let them be bored may sound peculiar or odd to you. However, consider what you get in return for boredom: creativity, brain development, problem solving, self-awareness…the payback doesn’t seem such a bad price to pay. They may just find a way to entertain themselves, to find out who they are versus who we want them to be - and what a wonderful gift you will have given them. All of these things can easily be done on a “staycation”. We have plenty of fun places in Gaston County to go and visit without ever leaving the county. Between the Schiele Museum and all of the free parks in the area, Gaston County is a great place to spend some time exploring and ending any day at Tony’s Ice Cream makes for a great one. Always remember, these are the days you are giving of your time. They will never know the price of your vacation or staycation, only the sweet memories. And don’t forget, creative play in children creates adults that are problem solvers. So have fun this summer inside or outside of Gaston County. Play games and disconnect - the return will be connecting once again with your past, your creativity and your children. What a wonderful gift of memories you will be giving them!
