LAKE ISSAQUEENA ECOLOGICAL PARK Lake Issaqueena is a man made lake located in the Clemson Experimental Forest. The site was once home to the Native American tribe, the Cherokee Indians, includes stone ruins from previous settlements, and acted as a bombing range during WWII. The goal of this project is to develop a stimulating ecological park that will begin to break down the dichotomy between human and nature and honor the cultural and historic significance of the land. Historically, the Piedmont region consisted of vast grasslands known as the Piedmont Prairie. A significant portion of the site consists of a large grassland which slopes towards the lake that has been overtaken with undesirable, non-native species. After analysing the sites conditions, it was determined that significant stormwater runoff was causing erosion along the slope and the lakes edge which ultimately lead to poor water quality within the cove.

To address the stormwater related issue throughout the site, a constructed wetland and stream will flow from the site’s high point and empty into the lake below. The water will flow through a series of vegetated swales, collect in a pond which is heavily planted with aquatic species to enhance water purification, and then pass over a small check dam to continue it’s journey to the lake. To address the erosion issues along the slope, the land will be heavily vegetated with diverse native grassland grasses and wildflowers. A 35’riparian buffer will also be implemented along the lake’s edge to slow down nutrient flow from stormwater runoff and create dense biomass below the soils surface with native trees, shrubs, and groundcovers. The abundance of native plants will begin to re-establish essential habitat for native wildlife to thrive.

MULBERRY POND CROSSING - WEST ASHLEY BIKEWAY CHARLESTON, SC During the Spring 2021 semester, our goal was to create a connection between the West Ashley Bikeway and the Mulberry Street community. The community was essentially disconnected from the Bikeway and other walkable amenities due to the stormwater retention pond which runs along the Bikeway. The addition of a bridge to cross “Mulberry Pond” will begin to create greater accessibilty for the community. Without the bridge, community members would have to travel a mile before reaching an access point to the Bikeway or other public spaces within West Ashley. The bridge and pavillion also provides a space for community members to gather and partake in a range of outdoor activities. There were several locations along the Bikeway that were considered before we proceeded with the Mulberry Street location. We believed that the Mulberry community was underserved in the sense of accessibilty to the Bikeway as an amenity. We chose the side of the pond that would host a bridge more effectively, reaching this conclusion based on shading, distance to cross, and accessibility. After an extensive design period, we began our construction of the bridge. Four weeks later, our ideas finished coming into fruition and we had the final product in front of us. Just as planned, our bridge merged into the natural landscape of the pond and created a connection for the Mulberry community.

MULBERRY POND

BIKEWAY

GREENWAY

The Clemson Design Center in Charleston partered with the Charleston Parks Conservancy to successfuly host a community dialogue with West Ashley community members. A zoom presentation was held to allow us to share our ideas with the community. Following the presentation, a series of break out rooms were open for people to express their opinions. The discussion allowed us to move forward with Mulberry Pond as our site location. The pond was highly desired by the community and the location would serve the area in many ways.

Documentation for the Mulberry Pond Crossing was a joint effort between Studio V and John Moore of 4SE Engineering. These documents assisted in initial placement of pilings by BluTide Construction, which then translated into the framework layout for the foundation system, comprised of a primary and secondary structure to support the composite decking. Columns are erected from the outriggers to support the roof structure. The structural system went through numerous iterations, as John Moore helped us to better understand load paths and the feasibility of our project. Up through this point, all work was done exclusively on site. Railings were constructed in the shop once dimensions of the vertical posts could be confirmed on site. The aesthetic of the railings are reminiscent of the sharp angles of the deck plan, as well as the roof trusses.
