Cartographers draw cumulatively. Geographical knowledge comes from a mapmaker exploring an area and drawing up what he finds. Another explorer draws on top of the first map, adding his knowledge, and so on, culminating in layers of geographical surveys, like sediment.
Different maps tell different stories. ´,I \RX SXW LW YHU\ VLPSO\ WKH :HVWHUQ culture was interested in comprehending the totality of space, and showing relationships within that space,â&#x20AC;? says Grim, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but the Eastern traditions were more interested in experiencing the place where you were.â&#x20AC;? Each procession sits on one ripple in a series of concentric circles. Just ask Ernest Shackleton, whose wife, Emily, PLJKW KDYH FDOOHG $QWDUFWLFD KLV PLVWUHVV Obsessed with the brutal landscape, he returned again and again to try and conquer the continent. 6KDFNOHWRQ ZDVQ¡W MXVW D GUHDPHU +H NQHZ KRZ GLIĂ&#x20AC;FXOW DQ $QWDUFWLF MRXUQH\ could be. He had been to Antarctica under the command of Robert Falcon 6FRWW LQ EXW ZDV VHQW KRPH HDUO\ on account of his poor health. The conWLQHQW KDG DOUHDG\ EHJXLOHG KLP ,Q he led the expedition that reached what was then the furthest southern latitude, only 112 miles from the Pole. n July of the summer that marked my halfway point through college, my best friend Graham and I set out in an old grey Toyota to conquer the $PHULFDQ :HVW :H Ă&#x20AC;JXUHG ZH¡G VWDUW LQ Washington, swing across Oregon, Idaho and Utah, then climb up through the whole state of California. Just the two of us, with camping gear and our steady grey steed: we wanted to feel like the pioneers of the past. We wanted to look out at $PHULFD DQG Ă&#x20AC;QG LW ZDV HYHU\WKLQJ ZH thought it was or had been. $W QLJKW ZH FDPSHG EHVLGH ULYHUV sleeping in the dirt. We sang old songs to OXOO RXUVHOYHV WR VOHHS ZDVKHG RXU GLVKHV in the water. Daytime was for speed.
