areas of interest: Sustainable and Green Architecture

My Under-graduate Thesis on ‘Eco-Resort at Sehore’ which was intended as a model of sustainability for the growing cosmopolitan city of Bhopal and the surrounding towns, simultaneously promoting eco-tourism and rural tourism in the area.

Philosophy and Theory of Architecture

I wrote a dissertation on ‘Architecture and Metaphysics’ where I tried exploring the zone of confluence of the two, and how metaphysics has been materialised in architecture.

Urban Design

I proposed a design for a competition for an Urban space in memory of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy in the CBD of Old City, Bhopal. I have been a part of a three member team where we worked out a revitalisation scheme for the historic neighbourhood of Shahjahanabad, Bhopal.

Architectural Conservation

I have been a part of a small team which documented a part of the Fort of Islamnagar. An year later, for the same site, I directed and lead a team of students to document the Rani Mahal in detail and the study the fort in general. I was also a part of a team which worked on the Shiva Temple, Bhojpur and tried estimating its structural system and the height of the shikhara, which was submitted to the then Mayor of Bhopal.

Vernacular Design

I documented the local building techniques of Upper Himalayas and the Eastern Himachal Pradesh while travelling through the region.

personal statement:

I am looking for an opportunity where I learn new things, of not just architecture, but also others that help in a holistic growth. I am willing to work in a motivated environment and test my limits of work. I also believe in the powers of architecture instrumental in growth at various layers and how our everyday environment moulds our personalities.

Semester 8 ( Thesis) Location: Sehore, Madhya Pradesh

The modern world is facing a grave problem, which is a result of nothing other than the desires of the man. This problem is of climate change, global rise in temperatures, loss of ecosystems and natural habitats of organisms; and this harms not just the other organisms that we share our earth with but also ourselves. This thesis is such an attempt to present a model of sustainable and environment friendly architecture for the hospitality industry. Also, there is a dire need to revitalise rural- tourism and eco- tourism in Madhya Pradesh especially. Through the project an attempt has been made in understanding the deeper values and emotions related to materials and technology. I have also attempted to create a proposal that moves beyond our physical world and touches the users on a much deeper and metaphysical level. The proposal requires an eco-resort for the promotion and betterment of eco-tourism, rural-tourism and heritage-tourism and requires to be sensitive and responsive to the environment and nature. This may derive inspiration from traditional vernacular architecture. The eco resort has to induce techniques and technology that does least harm to the nature of the place and stand with time.

ECO RESORT

While analysing the site for the design proposal, it was realised that the bigger context of the site is in some forms manifestation and resemble the ripples and waves created in water.

DELAWADI SAARU MAARU SALKANPUR

THE SITE

HOSHANGABAD

Chronological and Cultural Ripples

The essence of this region is not an ecology or forest or rural landscapes. But in bigger scheme of things, its a lake full of desires of humans in accord with the nature. It is a modest and subtle painting of the fact that we humans are a part of the nature and only ‘quanta’ of energy travelling in a ‘ripple’ over time. If anything, has to come up here, it must be a stroke of the same painting rather than standing out with the ego and the narcissism of the modern man. It has to be a part of the ripple and follows what has happened before it. The site has to become one with the region, not just with its ‘morphos’ which is physical, but also with metaphysical; not just in ‘space’ but also in ‘time’. It has to be inherently dynamic and static at the same time.

Evolution of the Concept

ECO RESORT

Complying with the design brief, a large part of the site is left off for farming and an orchard. Both these activities require huge amounts of water year round, and the site is completely devoid of any source of water, therefore, it was required that a source of water must be placed in. This inference and the derivation from the concept led to the conclusion of proposing a lake in the site. The lake is proposed along the natural contours of site with a little modification. The site if almost flat, which would prevent the collection of water and the rain water will run off. Therefore, a part of the site must be dug according to the design and the excavated earth must be spilled over surrounding the lake, forming mounds which would further help channelising the rainwater into the lake. Site Plan This also induces a dynamic air and interest in the campus. The buildings are oriented with the lake, having the Salkanpur temple in the background high on the hill; deriving a sense of gratitude and humaneness from it. To challenge the human brain of the ordinary, the ground plane has been shifted along various axes while creating various levels of enclosures along the loci of movement and transition, and in the built form. The build form has been designed to create minimal footprint, physically and aesthetically. The build form is enveloped with earth in places and where it couldn’t be, it is enveloped with a screening wall. The built has been designed in a manner to create a dialogue of open and closed spaces. I have attempted to bring human interactions closer to nature and help trigger man’s interaction with nature. The contours have been used to create a rhythm in the build environment by employing various levels in the design. A play of light and shadow has been created in all the buildings to create an interest in the built environment. Transition spaces are generally open or low heightened to modulate the scale and volume of the spaces and help through it a seamlessly flowing space.

CANTEEN FOR A HOSPITAL CAMPUS

CANTEEN for A HOSPITAL CAMPUS

02

Semester 6 Location: Bhopal

This was a part of a bigger project of designing a hospital and a medical college on a land of 30 acres. The site was on a hillock overlooking a reservoir of a dam. The canteen was to cater to the floating population of students and visitors on the campus. The site was planned in a way that the Hospital is the first structure on entering the campus, the Administrative block, Academic block and Library on the rear of the site, facing the reservoir. The Canteen was placed in the centre of the campus, easily accessible, providing ample space for interaction and views of the reservoir.

MEMORIAL FOR BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY

MEMORIAL for BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY

03

Semester 5 Location: Bhopal

On the occasion of the 29th year after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, a memorial was to be designed to commemorate one of the worst industrial disaster mankind has witnessed. The site was a hypothetical 190 acre, irregularly shaped land with a constant gradient of 16.67%; with the Upper Lake of Bhopal in front. A road 12 meters wide fall between the lake and site. The brief demanded an ‘energetically healing and timeless’ space to commemorate the incident in an area of 111 acres abutting the road, meanwhile leaving the rear part of the site untouched as a huge green cover.

18

MEMORIAL FOR BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY

Design Philosophy: The design is intended to recreate the night of 3rd December, 1984, architecturally. A limited material palette makes the impact more profound and the design more subtle. An attempt has been made to celebrate life.

GSPublisherEngine 0.4.100.100

GSPublisherEngine 0.4.100.100

Design Proposal: The site is designed as a promenade to recreate the night of 3rd December, 1984, with its past and future. The memorial is only an element in this transition. Two chambers; one with cold dark interiors and a cue of the lit chamber that follows and the plaza that it opens into, is symbolic of the night. The second chamber, as a hall of remembrance of the deceased and the victims; and the plaza with the lush greenery and the lake in front is an attempt to make the space soothing and interactive on an urban scale.

The unplastered brickwork is expected to support the growth of moss over years of exposure to the rains of Bhopal. The moss grown brick and concrete will merge into the background, making it ‘disappear’ into the site; inducing timelessness in the structure. This is symbolic of the strength of time, how it has healed (and it will heal) many of the scars that the event has left on the citizens of Bhopal.

01

2 0 15 Location: Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

This project aimed at upgrading the city level Haat Bazaar at Ujjain for the Kumbh Mela, 2016 which is to be held in Ujjain. The site is a government land of 3 acres and has a few existing shops, a toilet block and a workshop. The proposal aims at unifying the existing shops and adding a few kiosks and platforms for temporary shops, providing large landscaped courts and plazas. An amphitheatre, a stepped mound, a court and a food court, a parking plaza, a huge activity plaza and a covered foyer space is proposed to increase space usage by the common public. The existing workshop is to be renovated. The site is to landscaped and provisions for intensive Rain Water Harvesting are provided. The walls of the shops are proposed to be painted with tribal paintings and murals. I have prepared the working drawings, tender drawings, details and renderings for this project while also proposing a few design details.
