Junior Architect whitin cm architectes associés Since march 2010 I have been working as a junior architect with cm architectes associés. The office leaded by Cécile Michaux focuses mainly on refurbishment projects and on interior design of offices. My role within this studio consisted in detailed drawings of offices spaces and apartments. I have also had to edit quantity surveys and slips in French as well as in Dutch. La Luxembourgoise consisted in the production of drawings of construction details for the head office of an insurance company. This project was a collaboration between cm architectes associées and the luxembroug architecture office of Jim Clemes. The South Crystal and South City projects consisted on designing fully furnished high-class offices spaces and terraces for Infrabel on the top floor of newly constructed buildings near the Brussels-South railway station. Falcon Hurst is a newly constructed apartment building in Eeklo. Cm architectes associés, has been asked to develop the interior space planning and construction details of three apartments. Our mission consisted also in leading the contractors bidding and to be in charge of the site survey. I have also been a helping hand for the design of 80 social apartments of Cour St-Lazare at Molembeek financed by Beliris.

Junior Architect whitin Frederic Haesevoets Architecture From august 2009 till february 2010 I’ve been working as a junior architect with Frederic Haesevoets Architecture. This young Belgian architectural and design studio focuses on interior architecture of lofts and flats as well as private houses and public buildings. My role within this studio consisted during the first two months in designing competition entries as a designer architect. L’Allée des Couteliers at Gembloux was my first conception at FHA. The design of these social housings was a modern architectural and eco-friendly response to the claim of the Public Authorities. I was in charge of the design of the plans as well as the 3d models and 2d renderings. Another architect was in charge of the final 3d renderings. The Police Station of the ‘Borinage’ was another competition I designed with another fellow architect. A precise programatic program had to be developed in an existing building. Thanks to our work, FHA finished this competition second. I’ve also being an helping hand for competition of the town square of Visé. After completing these three competitions, my work focuses now on the site survey of 10 lofts at Boulevard Jamar 19 in Brussels. I’ve had to manage corrections of quantity survey, specifications documents, minutes and CAD drawings.

Junior Architect whitin Mashabane Rose Associates I spent 6 months as a junior architect with Mashabane Rose Associates (MRA). This dynamic South African architectural and design studio comprises two senior architects, Phill Mashabane and Jeremy Rose, 11 qualified architects and 6 technical staff. MRA’s work focuses primarily on museums and cultural heritage site projects (e.g. the Apartheid Museum, the Hector Pieterson Museum and the Freedom Parc), urban design schemes, as well as conservation and heritage consultancy. Several of its proposals have been awarded first places in competitions. My role within this studio consisted in designing competition entries as a designer architect with another Belgian junior architect, Gilbert Balinda. This designer tandem operated under the supervision of the office’s senior architect Jeremy Rose. The Sabi Sands Tented Camp Proposal was my first conception at MRA. After designing these 5 luxury safari tents and a common facility building, I was in charge of the 3d modelling and the 2d renderings. Another architect was in charge of the final 3d renderings. Thanks to our work, MRA won this restricted competition. The Master plan for the Aga Khan Academy and University at Dar-es-Salaam was a major competition that I designed with another junior architect and under the supervision of Jeremy Rose. Local culture as well as site and climate requirements inspired our design. During the design process, we set up precise procedures for the project’s analysis and roll-out and took care of engineering solutions. For The Comsec Gatehouse, another competition, I was in charge of the whole process, from the design researches to the 2d and 3d renderings. Apart from completing these three major projects, I provided assistance for several other projects. I designed in detail the entrance door of the Mandela House Museum; performed graphic research for the “Moving into Dance” toilet sings; helped to draw ceiling layouts and tiling layouts for the Trevenna Office Building; and did sketch-up models and 2d renderings for several other projects. Architecture Student at I.S.A Saint-Luc Bruxelles My five years at the Institut Supérieur d’Architecture Saint-Luc Bruxelles taught me to design architecture in a sensitive and contextual way, taking into consideration the project’s sociological, ecological and historical aspects. Throughout these five years I designed projects going from a simple pick-nick table to a large master plan. I was always guided by the research of an appropriate solution. In drawing these projects, I learned to use computerized tools such as ArchiCad, AutoCad, Sketch-Up, Photoshop, InDesign and MS Office. Besides realizing these architectural projects, I followed optional courses in architectural theory, heritage and renovation, sustainable development and design. In my final theoretical thesis, entitled: “From the theory of ‘virtual reality’ in architecture to the practice”, I researched into the concept of ‘transarchitecture’ and into how architectural experimentations like ‘transarchitecture’ can be assessed against our contemporary society. This thesis can be read in French at: http://www.gauthiervdb.net

Graphics and Design Since I am 15 years old, I have been using photoshop to create amongst others flyers and websites. More recently, I participated in the construction of an orphanage and a school in Zambia in 2006 and 2008, and I am now responsible for the graphic creations of the charity running these projects. Lastly, besides executing these graphic works I also followed a design course at the Institut SupÊrieur d’Architecture Saint-Luc Bruxelles. This course allowed me to experience with a number of new crafts, which I have since then put into practice.
