Fighter Brought into a world so naive, She was pushed down into the ground With each waking sound She opened her eyes to look around To see humanity so confound She was bound and allowed not For she was at every disadvantage Trapped in a body, she felt despised All the rules she was made to abide And on top of everything else, she was forsaken The people who brought her into this world Decided to leave her on her own And when they took her back She saw through more hate and more pain Raped at age eight and left with a scar that gaped She turned towards darkness Her mouth shut tight she refused to say words That she longed to speak Fearing, all the while thinking thoughts that were bleak Yet there was one who saw the light in her. There was a woman who reached into her She was her teacher. And from the time she chose to open her mouth, to drop her jaws down to the ground so to speak, It made her a fighter No matter how wrong it felt at first it made her ignite the fire within like the click Of a lighter. The second she made the conscious decision and followed her intuition she became a fighter The minute she took the strides forward to embrace the life that she had to overcome The love around her became tighter It was from that very first moment that a sound escaped her fragile lips that She became: a fighter.
Born into a time when life was harsh especially for someone in her skin. When the concept of all men and women being equals was unheard of. She was subject to racial discrimination since a very young age when she moved to Stamper, Arkansas. Maya Angelou has since then strived to fight the odds and show the world what is right. Star-spangled She always had a love for the arts She knew this from the very start She knew perseverance like no other As she dropped out of school to be a conductor The first female to stand her ground She had heads turning around As she paved her path with passion She was willing to break through that old fashion An actress, a singer, An editor, a dancer, A poet and a writer Was what she became She pushed herself because she knew what she was capable of She did what she wanted Her success came from the seeds that she planted And every bit of it she deserved For if not her, then who? Her career flourished and she was the star of the century, When called a ‘Woman of many talents’, one cannot deny That she was the sun, the moon and the stars She was incredible. She began to pen her life to encourage To nurture the nature of women across the land and sea She spoke against what was wrong She fought for what was right Everyone deserved to be equal and she knew it far too well She had a story to tell And she did Her zest and passion took her all around the world. Maya Angelou was a gifted soul. She accomplished most of what she desired. It wasn’t long after she pursued writing, that she was soon seen as an envoy for civil and equal rights.
It is one thing to seek truth; it is another to find it. Through her childhood she understood All that the world needed She sought for the truth that had dawned upon her Because it felt like it was the only thing that had been there For her when she found darkness, it was her light That helped her further ignite The spark that became the fire she desired for so long She was strong Her flare for truth and virtue took her places it did Nothing could stop her, there was just something about her A voice that had refused to sound so many years ago was now heard Loud and clear and this time, everybody cheered. Her time outside helped her master as many as five languages It gave her the courage To rip off all the bandages That covered her scars That once were
The path she paved for herself lead her to meeting people such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Two people who shared her beliefs, she worked very closely with them. They helped her reach the height of her aptitudes. And even after their demise, she continued to enrich the souls of the people through the work she produced including her series of Autobiographies.
