evelyn bailey We are proud to announce the Grand Marshall for 2014 Pride is the fabulous Evelyn Bailey. Volunteering is second nature to her and she has helped shape our community. She is the executive producer of Shoulders to Stand On documentary which focused on the history of the gay and lesbian movement in Rochester NY. Evelyn has also been honored with the Community Service Award from EPSA and the Greater Rochester Area Branch of the AAUW (American Association of University Women) for her work documenting Rochester’s gay history. We are proud to call this local hero one of our own! “Through my activism and volunteerism I have met so many incredibly courageous, passionate men and women fighting for their right to be free to be who they are - whether they be gay, straight, gender variant, or allies. For each one the journey out of their own “closets” was filled with fear - fear of the consequences and rejection and at the same time a greater fear to remain oppressed, unfree and unable to be who they were. The personal courage and risk taken by all of you to be out, to live your lives openly and honestly as allies, as LGBTQI men and women creates the environment of acceptance and freedom that is still desperately needed.” - Evelyn Bailey at Empire State Pride Agenda Award Dinner held in her honor.
Peter Mohr and the staff of the bachelor forum wish everyone a happy and safe 2014 pride.

anThony Mascioli Tony Mascioli’s life was one of Rochester’s gay success stories. Tony was born in Rochester, New York on December 14, 1930. He lived in the North Street area of the city. He remembers walking downtown to the gay bars as a young man. Tony was not harassed as a student, but was kind of a loner. When he came out to his family, his father was not very supportive. He left Rochester at 19 for New York City where he lived in a rooming house for $7 a week rent. He did not make it in New York City and returned to Rochester. Tony graduated from SUNY Brockport where he was involved in acting, and writing. After graduation, Tony returned to New York and attended Columbia University majoring in English Literature. In 1974 he went into partnership with his cousin and opened the Wall Street Spa and Sauna. Soon after, Tony also opened the East Side Sauna, and a guest house on Long Island. Tony was a colorful and charismatic entrepreneur in New York City. Tony provided a place for men, in and out of the closet, to socialize and find fulfillment in their identity. True True Colors: Colors: Reflections on what Pride means to me Born and raised in Rochester and I thought I knew all there was to my hometown. But then I moved into the Neighborhood of the Arts and was shocked to discover how little I knew of this city that I called home. Because of this, I felt a great disconnect and a longing to find a niche and also to help make this city a better place. I shared this wish with a friend, who suggested that I contact our friend, Mike Lill, who was looking for volunteers for Pride. I contacted him and I am so grateful that I did. Not only did I help a friend but got to know that friend more and I made new friends and connections due to being a volunteer for Pride. Seeing first-hand, the passion and dedication of a few people create something so wonderful for people of all stages of life to enjoy was inspiring and demonstrated a strength of character that I feel can be lacking in our city. It was so amazing to see so many diverse people come together to teach, learn, grow, and celebrate acceptance. These are things that I feel a home, a city should encompass. It was great to see all sorts of businesses, profit and non-profit, pull resources and support their community. And we are all a part of this community, this family of Rochestarians. Everything from the Flag Ceremony to the Picnic was a wonderful success. I especially loved the beautiful songs, poetry and dance that were performed Friday evening. And the History Pavilion was a great idea. People really seemed to enjoy it. I believe learning of other’s struggles and triumphs aids in linking everyone and, in that, understanding and empathy are nurtured. I always believe in hope and love. They will save us as a people. Pride is just one way to foster this belief. It was a lot of work but the rewards greatly outweighed the stress and fatigue. I wish all the best for all of the dedicated volunteers. Your hard work makes this city a welcoming home to all. And isn’t that what we all want. - Leonides Ortiz

BETTY WHO by Adam Young
The Australian artist’s career has gained steady momentum since the release of her debut EP, “The Movement” last spring, spawning the dance hit “Somebody Loves You.” Spencer Stout of Salt Lake City, Utah used the song as a catalyst for a flashmob marriage proposal to his partner Dustin at a local Home Depot. The video soon went viral on YouTube with over 12 million views to date. The artist’s sophomore effort, the EP “Slow Dancing,” was released by RCA Records in April and includes songs “Alone Again” and “Heartbreak Dream.” According to MTV.com, “Betty Who blends indie and pop music into an irresistible mix of bold soundscapes, Top 40 hooks, and knowing lyrics.” Both of her EPs have received rave reviews on iTunes. Betty Who will be performing in Rochester on the heels of performing at other Pride events in Columbus, Chicago, New York, Minneapolis, and St. Louis throughout June. This fall, she will be joining Katy Perry on her Prismatic Tour throughout her native Australia.

True True Colors: Colors: Reflections on what Pride means to me The first time I attended Rochester Pride, I was with my mom. We had been out at a family party and missed the parade, but managed to escape with a vague excuse (I'm not out to extended family) and we were able to make our way to the Auditorium Center parking lot. You could feel the bass of the music through your flip-flops and by the time we saw the two long lines of people waiting to get in, the biggest smile had spread across my chubby, 14-year-old face. For an awkward, bisexual preteen stepping into the Rochester Gay Community for the first time, Pride can only be called euphoric. There were more queer people than I could count, their faces perspiring in the sweltering summer heat as they wove around each other toward food, jewelery, beer, and dancing, and each face was a friendly one. It was as if I had left one family party and come to another. Fast forward five years and I still receive that same euphoric feeling when I step into the festival, except this time I no longer blush when I realize I've picked up a bottle of lubrication from a sales table! Coincidentally, the older I've gotten the more Pride has become less about pride to me and more about that sense of belonging. While 14-year-old me enjoyed the dancing and music (taking in the vast number of queers with a thumping, excited heartbeat), 19-year-old me moved through the history exhibit with a sense of awe and held back tears as a beautiful drag queen sang Leah Zicari's Glory, Glory into the evening air. Standing in that crowd of people, I felt more at home than I had in a long time. One of the most moving things about Pride is that it you realize you're a part of something; you're a part of a community. Of course, it's fun too! You make friends, you eat, you dance, you buy quirky shirts; I don't think I've ever left a festival without buying a necklace. But for me, Pride is more than that. It's about being with a family. And yes, even when you don't take your mom! – Erin Hayes

True True Colors: Colors: Reflections on what Pride means to me Pride: Oxygen for the Soul I don’t remember the first time I went to Pride, or even which state. I remember how I breathed a little easier as I looked around at all of the people, how I smiled all day and into the evening, how I could feel the ground, solid under my feet. I reveled in our beauty, our diversity, our self-expression, our occupation of space – even in the midst of sometimes, hostile places, ignorant words, or hateful acts. Our communities’ ability to gather, share our lives, raise our voices -these actions have made and continue to make it possible for people of all ages to be seen, to name what they desire, to make home often from scratch. These encompass some of our communities’ legacy made visible at Pride. Pride has often made the difference between reluctant complicity and a quiet, tenacious resolve to continue to be visible. As I think about Pride this year, I find I am looking more forward to it than ever, and as I consider what it means to “unmask our true colors,” I cannot help but think of how important outspoken allies like Cyndi Lauper have been to our movements and communities, and the significance of sharing our truths with each other as transgender, bisexual, pansexual, lesbian, gay, queer, Two Spirit, and same gender loving people, and sharing our lives’ truths and loves with those who are significant to us. I cannot help but think of Dorothy Allison’s words that remind us that “... suffering does not ennoble. It destroys. To resist destruction, self-hatred, or lifelong hopelessness, we have to throw off the conditioning of being despised, the fear of becoming the they that is talked about so dismissively, to refuse lying myths and easy moralities, to see ourselves as human, flawed. Pride, for me, has often been the antidote to shame, self-destruction, and hopelessness. Pride means strength, beauty, mystery, and home. I hope my first “home-coming” with my partner in Rochester – I am relocating in less than three weeks -- will be one to remember, and that we all remember how we embody the very essence of extraordinary: in business suits, in skirts and dresses, with loud-

people have struggled to gain social acceptance. We have been beaten, arrested and ignored as citizens and fellow human beings. Thankfully, the tides are turning. As a country, America continues to take small steps forward, ever so slowly moving us to full equality. As a community, we have pride and we need pride. We now have pride and use the word because we refuse to live in the closet. We are no longer willing to hide in the shadows. We are human, and we are not afraid to show ourselves and our humanity. We have a long history, and one that has survived and endured despite the bigotry, prejudice, and hatred that we have faced for eons. We should be proud of how far we have come. We should be proud of our predecessors who were bold, brave trail blazers. Without them and their sacrifices, we would not be where we are today. We use pride and our pride festivals to celebrate that history and those ancestors. We use pride to bring ourselves to the forefront; to remind the government – and the entire country – that we are here. More than anything, we use pride to demonstrate our humanity. We are real, we are here, we are human, and we are equal. We need to remind ourselves and the world of that. We need to have pride as people who are living life the best way we can, and the only way we can: honestly. Pride is a good word for us. It reminds us of our past and gives us hope for our future. Pride is a time to reflect, honor and celebrate. Let us go out in loving memory of those who came before us, and let us go out in celebration of ourselves and hope for our future. Let’s go be proud. - Lauren Shiro
LGBT Pride marks a time when we come together as a community of diverse and beautiful identities and experiences to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished and all that lies ahead in furthering equality and justice. This year in particular is a pivotal time for LGBT New Yorkers and in Rochester in particular. As a statewide and even national leader on issues of importance to the LGBT community, Rochester has shown that the spirit of inclusion wins. As the first city to extend protections to transgender citizens – an issue we’re still fighting for at the state level - Rochester continues to set the example for how we should treat all our people with dignity and respect. Mayor Warren’s announcement at the Empire State Pride Agenda
Spring Dinner that the city will cover transition-related care for transgender municipal employees – the third city in the nation to offer this care – further demonstrates the city’s leadership on LGBT equality. The backlash from Buzz 98.9 and the transphobic dialogue that ensued was a sobering reminder that we’re not there yet. The incident shows how much work we have left do to in educating about the authenticity of our identities and the seriousness of ignorance. We truly turned a corner on transgender rights when the radio station terminated the hosts for their actions. Hate lost on this issue, and we must continue to rise to the challenge of pointing out ignorance and creating critical mass to show that it won’t be tolerated. What played out in Rochester shines as a beacon for individuals and businesses across the U.S. that free speech rules in our society, but those who guide their words with ignorance and hate are not free from the consequences of their actions. Pride is a poignant time for us to stand up and be visible. When we come together as a united community, we are seen and our voice is heard. As with the transphobic radio incident, we saw the power of our community to call out injustice and move big business to correct a wrong and create real social change. Let us mark this pride as a celebration of our hard-fought victories, and our commitment to continuing the fight for equal rights. As we raise our rainbow flags and march into the sunlight this pride, let us honor all that those before us have done to allow us to stand loud and proud where we are today, and carry on the torch of justice so that those who come after us will enjoy an even more inclusive and equal world. - Allison Steinberg Communications Director, Empire State Pride Agenda
