WELCOME

To roc Pride 2019

Happy Pride Y’all! Welcome to ROC Pride 2019, join us as “We Remember; We Rise. We Fight. We ROC.” This year we pay homage to the pioneers of the LGBTQ+ movement. A significant day for LGBTQ+ people around the globe, June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The patrons of the Stonewall Inn, having long been the target of anti-LGBTQ+ police bias and harassment, resisted and sparked the modern LGBTQ+ equality movement. Their resistance and voice are why Pride Month is celebrated around the world today. But we don’t hear much about that part of the Pride story and we hear even less about Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and Stormé DeLarverie , an African-American transgender woman, a Latinx transgender woman, and an African-American lesbian who were at the center of it all. Johnson reportedly said, “I got my civil rights,” as she threw a shot glass into a Stonewall mirror. Rivera was a friend and fellow activist to Johnson who shouted, “I’m not missing a minute of this—it’s the

revolution!” as the events at Stonewall began to unfold. Rumor has it Stormé was the spark that started it all that night in NYC. Every Pride we honor and celebrate these three amazing women in spirit through being loud, visible and OUT. This year, we acknowledge them in the recognized place in history where they have always belonged. In these pages, you will find everything you need to know about ROC Pride 2019. Throughout this weeklong celebration we challenge you to ask yourself, “What is Your Stonewall?”

In Pride 2018, Lori joined last minute as the Volunteer Coordinator. This year, Lori is beyond excited to officially contribute to the team and help bring in a new voice and new perspective! 11

ISADORA BUGAN OUR TEAM

Victor Santiago is an alumnus and staff member for the Rochester Institute of Technology. He has been volunteering with the Out Alliance in several ways, from holding fundraisers, sitting on the Development Committee for the agency, and now becoming an active member on the E-Team for ROC Pride. His passion for making a difference in the community and event planning influenced him to join the team and help make this year’s Pride a big success! Sam Brett (AKA Samantha Vega) is a Venezuelan native whose first Pride experience was ROC Pride 1995! An RIT student then, Sam grew to love all things Pride, has volunteered at the Out Alliance since 1997, eventually joined the Pride Entertainment committee ten years ago, and co-chaired ROC Pride 2016 and 2017. He has also been a long-term volunteer with Trillium Health and other organizations. As Samantha Vega, she has hosted Pride festivities around the country, Syracuse, Rochester, and Burlington, VT. Brett challenges himself with making ROC Pride self-sustainable while being inclusive, accessible and affordable to all. Christopher Coles goes about the world as an American Thinker, Sign Language Interpreter, Director, Civil Rights Activist and Spoken Word Poet. “My mission as one of Rochester sons is to empower the community thru it’s collective, social, political, artistic, and cultural engagement which continues here within our city and globally across communities. This year as we commemorate Mama Marsha P Johnson & Silvia Rivera, let us use the spirit of Stonewall as a beacon of resistance and community alliance.” Isadora Bugan is the new Communications Intern for the Out Alliance. As a person who was involved in the LGBTQ+ community in Brazil, participating in events such as Sao Paulo Pride and her hometown’s first Walk for Bisexual Visibility, Isadora believes that working with the Out Alliance as a Communications Intern this summer will allow her to combine her interest in LGBTQ+ activism and community engagement with her passion for writing. Isadora attends the University of Rochester, where she will graduate in Anthropology and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies. 15

GRAND MARSHAL Luis Burgos

TO BE HONORED AT ROC PRIDE 2019

Luis is being recognized as Grand Marshall for ROC Pride 2019 because he exemplifies outstanding work in intersectionality: he has worked with all communities in the Rochester area to make sure we are all inclusive and respectful of one another, and has made a mark in the LGBTQ+ efforts in our city. In his commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, Luis was instrumental as Commissioner of Recreation and Youth Services in ensuring that all department staff participated in Safe Zone training provided by the Out Alliance; the Empty Closet publication was available at newspaper racks located in every Recreation Center; Pride flags were displayed at all department facilities; and Pride activities were conducted at every Recreation Center. In 2013, Commissioner Burgos approached the Out Alliance with the proposal to move the Pride Festival from the Auditorium Theater parking lot to the Martin Luther King Park as he was determined to elevate the festival experience and highlight the event, front and center, in the City of 16

Rochester. He worked tirelessly to make that vision a reality, and he is very proud to see how the festival has grown significantly since that move. At Ibero, Luis continues to support and implement initiatives to create safe and inclusive spaces with Safe Zone training for all staff and clients, advocating for Human Resource policy changes, and creating camaraderie amongst the agency’s LGBTQ+ staff. This summer Ibero will be participating in the Pride Parade for the first time due to his leadership. In his community service role, Luis has been an active member of the Black Pride Committee since 2015 to support events and financial planning. Outside of work, Luis has been active in the community with more than 3 decades of board service in the areas of housing services, youth development, refugee resettlement, arts and culture, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and land preservation. The labor of a community leader never stops, and even after retirement, Luis continues to make waves, spearhead change in our city, and inspire new and old leaders to rise, fight, and ROC!

“To be called upon to represent the LGBTQ+ community, alongside Ms. Rickey, is truly an honor, and it is especially humbling on the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. We stand as representatives of the fierce and fearless black and brown people who stood up for our rights and ignited the riot against our oppressors—a battle that continues on to this day.”

HONORARY MARSHAL

This year’s “Roc Pride” Commemoration of the 50th year of Stonewall we celebrate our own mother of them all; Miss Rickey Snowden as Honorary Marshall Miss Rickey came to the Rochester area from Las Vegas, Nevada in 2008 and has remained a constant loving force of strength, change, hope, and love to the LGBTQ+ community.

“I feel the opportunity to reach thousands with just a smile and a wave and most of all being recognized in the community gives me the opportunity to get things done in our community. My vision for myself is, most importantly, to be the voice of transgender people.”

Miss RickY Snowden

Her strong faith and hope for humanity is what made her ROC Pride’s choice for Honorary Marshall. Miss Rickey joined the Unity Fellowship Movement where she sang in the choir and mentored youth. Her greeting smile met each and every guest at the door. Nowadays, you can see her at the third Presbyterian church where she and her fellow parishioners feed over 150 homeless individuals in Rochester. Miss Rickey shares that same hospitality and kindness weekly with SAGE Rochester members as she assists with SAGE Senior Lunch each and every Tuesday at the Out Alliance. When asked what belief keeps her so committed to the work she does in Rochester, Miss Rickey Snowden’s response was, “My journey is to help anyone along the path. My mission is to serve my community and, every chance I get, stand up for our rights.” Miss Rickey’s next stop: Politics. She says to local politicians, “You’ve got company coming.” Miss Rickey is looking so forward to serving the community once again as Honorary Marshall. Written by Christopher Coles

STONEWALL MARSHAL

Rochester Gay Liberation Front By the mid-1970s members of the LGBTQ+ community had formed over a thousand affiliated organizations throughout the country. These new organizations exerted pressure on state legislatures, city councils, schools, the media, churches and countless professional organizations. The Rochester Gay Liberation Front, located at the University of Rochester campus, was part of this national process of demanding gay and lesbian rights. Among

their many achievements, the GLF created a newspaper we still know today as The Empty Closet. These local activists brought into existence, in just three short years, a separate, cohesive gay and lesbian community that birthed what we now know as the Out Alliance. Standing upon the shoulders of Stonewall revolutionaries, we recognize their bravery, activism and passion for our community and hereby recognize them as 2019 Stonewall Marshals. 21
