SALAM...

A

lhamdulillah, the blessed month of Ramadan has reached us. It is a time for prayer, reflection and finding a path closer to God. For many of us Ramadan is also a time to try to kick a bad habit or start a good one. Whatever your intentions are, we hope your Ramadan is going well. It is also with sadness that at such a time, at the beautiful time of Ramadan, that we have to experience the senseless tragedies that have plagued us the last few weeks. Many of our readers are from the UK and we would like to take this time to send love and light to those who have been affected by the tragedies in Manchester and London. We stand united with you. Ramadan is a beautiful month that brings out the best in our people. It is when we show the true meaning of what it means to be Muslim - to love, to respect, to strengthen the community. Yet these acts show nothing of what Islam represents. So as we observe this glorious month of Ramadan, let us remember to show love and compassion to one and all.

t has been a busy few weeks here at MOGA and with no signs of slowing down, we are proud to unveil our latest photo series, ‘Flower Power.’ For this photo series, we created the first ever hijab / turban made entirely from real flowers to celebrate the beauty of being different and diverse. 11

With 18 different species and types of flowers being used for this headpiece, we want to remind people that no matter what shape, size or colour you may be, ultimately we are all different to one another, but when you take a step back and look at all of us from afar, we are actually a part of something incredibly beautiful.

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Weighing just under 850 grams, the ‘FLURBAN’ (Floral + Turban) has a shelf life of 48 hours (or 2 days) and was made by an incredibly talented Melbourne based florist in just under 10 hours.

12

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Whilst floral headpieces are nothing new in fashion, we wanted to give this accessory a cultural revamp and make a more inclusive headpiece specifically geared towards women who wear hijabs or turbans either for religious or cultural reasons. It is our intent on creating similar custom or bespoke pieces for anyone who is interested in time for 13

this year’s Spring Racing carnival but until then, for more explosive looks, you can check out our new collection for ASOS here.

KNOCK...KNOCK. WHO’S THERE?

Its’ Ramadan Written by Asala Montaser

R

amadan has knocked the door of many Muslims around the world. It is not a month where we ‘starve’ ourselves as many misconceptions out there.

The essence of Ramadan is mostly spirituality, coming closer to God. It is a month where we are able to control our desires, a month where we feed the indigent, a month where we put the needs of others before our own. Muslims gather together with their loved ones to observe this holy month. It’s a reminder for us to acknowledge our blessings. If we speak in terms of health, fasting works its magic on our body. It is a way to calm our heart and mind, the fact that it’s a spiritual month, Muslims practice 22

praying, generosity, charity, family bonding and self-control. It could be a great help for any type of addictions, for example smoking. So be prepared to ditch your bad habits. It works as a cleanser for your body, eliminating any toxins. Let’s talk fashion wise, we see how clothing plays a very relevant role in Ramadan. Kaftan and abayas are a win in the Middle East - they are the most popular. They are not just the traditional black ones, but a variety of designs have arrived in the market and they aren’t just modest but also stylish. Renowned designers who have taken on the kaftan and abayas have been Elie Saab, Valentino and Alberta Feretti. Their designs include luxurious gold details and metallic handwork.

ET CTIVE Written & Photos by Anah Maria Active With summer approaching, it is only natural to want to enjoy the weather and remain fit, especially through exercises such as swimming. Anah Maria Active’s comfortable loose fit swimwear with a peplum waist allows you to remain fashionably modest, regardless of the situation or activity. 26

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Swimming is an efficient way to improve and maintain your fitness and health regardless of your age or fitness level, from beginners to professional athletes. Of course, it is vital to disclose the benefits of swimming, which are innumerable; it can bring improvements in skeletal muscle mass equalling improvements in strength, muscle tone, and power. 27

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Moreover, swimming can also result in a decrease in triglycerides and also decrease in blood pressure and in total cholesterol. The resistance of water can be 44 times greater than air, meaning you have to work harder to move through it, due to the density of water. This is a brilliant way to tone muscles, by working against resistance.

28

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Doing each stroke properly not only lengthens and stretches the muscles used, but the repeated movement to stay moving through the water helps you develop muscle endurance as well. Besides it being a useful sport, swimming can also be used as an instrumental activity used as stress management. With a hectic schedule, whether you are a busy mother or a diligent student, being in the water can bring you a sense of tranquil regardless of your fitness level.

The Anah Maria Active burkini all-in-one range is designed to give modest women an opportunity to be modestly active. It is made of light material, allowing you to swim with ease and comfort.

Not only are the burkinis for swimming, but they can also be utilised in numerous ways, such as an all-in-one running outfit for the gym. Due to the breathable light material, you are able to work out with optimum comfort.

YOU GOT

CHOCOLATE ON YOUR FACE

For many of us, chocolate is our weakness. We can’t seem to resist the sweet treat. But did you know that chocolate has its benefits for our skin? Ok, we’re sure you’ve heard it before that eating chocolate (in moderation) is good for our skin. But what if we told you that you can lather it on your face too? Read on to find out more... 32

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

S

Chocolate itself is packed with plenty of antioxidants and even has healing qualities so imagine what a face mask made of chocolate can do for your face.

It’s all natural so technically you can probably eat some off your face whilst you give yourself a facial but we wouldn’t recommend it. (Obviously we tried...)

To give you a little more insight, the Minty Chocolate Mask is specially formulated to treat minor acne and blemishes, reduce fine wrinkles, and of course to nourish and moisturise the skin. Yey to chocolate on your face.

ay hello to the Minty Chocolate Mask by L olavely Cosm etics. This wash-off mask makes you feel like you have actual chocolate on your face. It smells so good.

33

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

No matter what skin type you have oily, dry or combination - the Minty Chocolate Mask is suitable for all. Our recommendation though, as with any new product, is to first use a thin layer on a small part of your face to identify if you get any reaction to it. Just to be on the safe side. And that’s a rule of thumb for any product. Just because it’s made of chocolate doesn’t mean it’s used any differently from other face masks. Directions of use are the same as any other. Wash and tone your face first to get the pores ready for the application. 34

Then apply an appropriate amount of the mask evenly on your face. Leave it to dry for about 30 minutes then rinse with luke warm water. Repeat this twice or three times a week. We’ve been using this for the last month and we must admit, it has reduced redness and blemishes. We each have different types of skin (obviously) so the effects are different depending on our skin type. One thing we have in common though is having to fight the urge to lick it off our faces.

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

For the dry skin tones, the mask helps to keep it subtle and moisturised. We like how it doesn’t dry out our skin and our skin is visibly softer in a month. For the oily skin tones, it doesn’t manage the secretion of oil to be honest but that’s a good thing cos oil is necessary to keep your skin soft, subtle and youthful. Yeah, we know the struggle of oily skin all too well but at least the mask doesn’t make the skin more oily. Plus as mentioned before, the mask doesn’t dry out the skin so that’s a plus. 35

If we’ve peaked your interest and you’re sitting there thinking, “where can I get my hands on a bottle to try?”, head over to Lolavely Cosmetics website or social media to find out how. A 50-gram jar will set you back a mere USD11 so it’s a steal. And they ship worldwide. So yey! Tap the icons below to head to their website and social media.

RESULTS Mostly A's Your Ramadan spirit has limits and although you are aware of the worldly hardships of the poor and needy, you tend to concern yourself with the issues that directly involve you. Try to enhance and energize your connection with the less fortunate as it will help to instill the virtue of mercy in you. Inshaa Allaah. Mostly B's Subhaan Allaah, may Allaah (SWT) be pleased with your Ramadan spirit. Your generosity and ability to give of your time, self and money is admirable. You are sincere in your intention to make a difference, knowing full well that Allah (SWT) smiles at the person who stretches out his hand to give charity. Mostly C's Your Ramadan spirit is lacking a bit. Try to see things from a different perspective especially in those who are less fortunate than yourself. Being big hearted doesn’t just mean giving up your money, it also means showing kindness and putting others first. Start small by making the intention to help others and bear in mind, that Allah (SWT) bestows his mercy upon those who themselves are merciful to others. Inshaa Alaah.

T

he wait is finally over. Hyde & Co’s doors are open once again. This time with a slightly different look. But don’t fret, the same quality we were used to when they first opened their doors has remained the same. Take Hyde Out, as it is called today, has made a few significant changes. As the name suggests, the new concept is fresh and is changing with the times. As takeouts become more common here, with Singaporeans constantly on the run, Hyde’s new concept makes take-outs more fun. Say goodbye to the porcelain plates and say hello to the colourful take-out boxes

42

your food will come in. That’s not to say you can’t have a nice sit-down dinner in the new and improved restaurant. On the contrary, you still can, but just in case you can’t finish that gourmet pizza you ordered, simply pack it and go. Easy peasey. For the environmentally friendly peeps out there (like us), don’t fret, all the boxes are eco-friendly, biodegradable and all that good stuff. It’s not just the outlook that has changed. The menu though,…can we start on the menu? Still keeping with their fusion theme, the new menu is made up of their typical East meets West concept. Not straying away from what they’re good at, the concise menu now showcases gourmet pizzas and designer pastas, intermingled

Designer Pastas

with their starters, their very own Hyde Tea Collection (yes, signature blends, people) and sweet treats.

We were lucky enough to be among the first few to try just some of the items they're serving up now.

At first glance some of the the new items may sound rather peculiar such as the mix of Heibi Hiam in their pasta and pizza. For those unfamiliar, Heibi Hiam is spicy dried shrimp sambal usually found in Chinese cuisines. Your taste buds may not necessarily be jumping around just as yet but trust us (seriously, trust us) you have to try it to believe it. When we said Hyde is good at fusion, it’s an understatement. We've been around the block before and have tried fusion food and nothing compares to this. The amazing chef and kitchen staff really got their fusion game down on pat.

Starting off our adventure, we were served the Gnocchi Mee Rebus. For our overseas readers, Mee means noodles and Rebus means boil. Basically it's a typical Malay dish made up of boiled egg noodles with a spicy, slightly sweet curry-like gravy. In this bowl of delight, in lieu of the egg noodles, Head Chef, Nazz, used Gnocchi.

43

The typical Mee Rebus gravy didn't change. Inheriting the recipe and talent from his mother who owns a wedding catering business. The gravy had the sweetness of the ingredients with an

44

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

added spiciness from the dollup of chilli sambal served on top. A typical bowl of Mee Rebus comes with a boiled egg, but in this fusion masterpiece Chef Nazz served it with a poached egg instead. Personally we're not big fans of Gnocchi but we cleaned up the bowl pretty good. Along with the bowl of Gnocchi, came a sample platter of their other two Designer Pastas – the Firecracker (Spicy Laksa cream linguine tossed with toasted Heibi Hiam, served with succulent honey -glazed tiger prawn) and Hyde’s Chilli Crab Pasta. We were actually expecting the Heibi Hiam pasta to be spicy but it was more 45

sweet than spicy. The chilli crab pasta on the other hand was definitely spicy. So if you're not too big on spicy food then The Firecracker may hit the spot. Personally we can't decide which we liked better. The Chilli Crab Pasta is and has been their best selling dish since they first opened so that is without a doubt a must-try. Once we cleaned our plates of the pasta (and yep we cleaned it alright), out came three of their Gourmet Pizzas. Now, at first glance, you would go "huh?" upon hearing what goes into each pizza but bear with us. This has a happy ending.

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Gourmet Pizzas

The first pizza was called Lady Hyde – classic Hawaiian pizza with a Hyde twist of Heibi Hiam sprinkles and bacon bits. Once again the Heibi Hiam (dried shrimp) gave the pizza it's distinct sweetness. It looked absolutely delicious. Needless to say we dug right in. The second was called The Bomb – sambal chincalok (fermented tiny shrimp mixed with chillies, shallots and lime juice), fresh prawns, omelette with generous servings of Chye Poh (picked radish). At first glance it didn't look as "eye-catching" as the other two. But don't let its looks fool you. The sweetness of the prawns mixed with the crunchiness of the Chye Po (pickled radish) intermingled with the slight 46

spiciness of the chincalok sambal, this instantly became our favourite. The third was called Geisha and as the name suggests, this had a Japanese influence - made up of Norwegian smoked salmon, burnt broccoli, Mentaiko mayo spread topped with bonito flakes. This was an instant hit among many who attended the media launch. It was good but The Bomb stole our hearts and we're not going to deny it. And as if that wasn't enough, out came the dessert. Singapore is known for its Kaya Toast which is toasted bread with coconut jam and butter.

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Hyde's Kaya Toast

Hyde's take on the local delight comprises of homemade Kaya (coconut jam) Ganache over toast topped with Gula Melaka (palm sugar) shavings and coconut and Anzac Cookie ice cream.

To experience the whole new taste of Take Hyde Out, check them out at North Bridge Road today and follow them on social media for updates.

After everything we were so full that you had to roll us out the doors of Hyde. But we reckon if you give us The Bomb pizza, we might eat it all up again. That's how good it was. 47

Health

STAY HYDRATED DURING Ramadan - the time for fast for us Muslims. Throughout the day, we abstain from food and water. Staying hydrated is very important to keep our bodies functioning at its optimal but how does one stay hydrated during Ramadan?

55

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

For many of us, the moment the adzan sounds the time for us to break fast, we reach for a glass of something sweet - sodas, fruit juices, anything that would give us that sugar rush. But all that artificial sugar causes weight gain. And with our bodies not at its highest metabolism point at this stage, its best to stay clear from all these. Our bodies get its natural sugar intake from the dates already so there is no need for added sugar - artificial no less.

56

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Your best bet is to stick with water. Nothing can ever come close to good old H20. Our body requires water for all major body functions, including dissolving minerals and other nutrients. So stick with water...seriously.

57

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

To start your day right, drink two 8-ounce glasses of water at suhoor. And end your fast with two 8-ounce glasses again with dates. If you’re headed out for Terawih prayers at the local mosque, bring along a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated throughout the night and replenish the body of the water it was missing throughout the day. And if you can, keep a bottle of water next to your bed to keep sipping throughout the night. Unless you’re dead to the world when you sleep, then this may not apply. The key here is to keep sipping water throughout the night before you begin the fast all over again. There is no point chugging 8 glasses of water in a row.

58

GAYA MAGA ZINE. COM

Finally, incorporate foods with high water content in your suhoor and iftar meal. Foods such as cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach, watermelon, apples, can help you stay hydrated and replenish the water your body needs. Stay hydrated, guys! And Ramadan Kareem! 59
