By the time this issue comes out, half of 2024 has already gone. Though Gaya Travel team members did experience a rather slow start at the beginning of the year, our schedule suddenly became hectic from midApril onwards because many opportunities to travel arose only then. And we foresee this pace to continue throughout the year, in line with the expected increase in tourism activities, particularly in Malaysia and Asia.

Despite hearing about how the global economy is facing downside risks in 2024, tourism remains resilient. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is forecasting that barring any untoward incidents, by year’s end, travel and tourism should have recovered completely to pre-pandemic levels, based on the statistics obtained in May 2024.

So, what does this mean? For one, Gaya Travel hopes that flight ticket prices will go down, considering most airlines are back to full capacity, boosting the supply of airline seats to various destinations. But then again, recently the founder of AirAsia Tony Fernandes claimed that ticket prices remain high due to high demand. Popular locations like Japan and Bali are also overcrowded.

With all these mixed signals, we consumers need to constantly be on the lookout for travel experiences that give value - some might find it acceptable to pay high prices as long as they safely reach their destinations, but need to skimp on other expenses like lodging or food. Others might prefer travelling to closer and more affordable destinations so that they do not need to reduce food and shopping. Perhaps more and more of us will travel during the off-peak season because that is when prices are lower and crowds are smaller. Whatever the decision may be, travellers need to be astute in getting the most out of their travel while managing their finances accordingly.

So, to help travellers decide on where to go next, Gaya Travel invites readers to read about our team members’ first-hand experience in Khao Yai and Bangkok in Thailand (page 22), Jordan (page 32), Almaty in Kazakhstan (page 42), Jaipur in India (page 50), Sentosa Island in Singapore (page 56), Perlis (page 62), Tioman Island in Pahang (page 70), and Pasir Gudang in Johor (page 76).

When it comes to Hotels & Resorts, flip the pages to find out more about Fairmont Jaipur (page 108), glamping options in Pahang (page 113), Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa (page 112), lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur (page 122), and Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore (page 128).

We hope you find Gaya Travel Magazine Issue 19.1 informative and helpful for your travels in 2024 and beyond. See you in the next issue, and safe travels!

Live an Unforgettable 48 Hours in Istanbul

İstanbul, one of the world’s most alluring cities, offers a fascinating history, distinctive cuisine, a vibrant arts and culture scene, and a plethora of shopping opportunities. Türkiye’s most famous metropolis presents visitors with an endless variety of options throughout the year and remains a crucial destination for a fantastic ‘city-break experience’. Let’s spend 48 hours in İstanbul discovering the city’s history, meeting at the most captivating attractions, and sampling the original Michelin-starred cuisine!

SATURDAY – Let’s Start!

08.00-10.00: The best way to begin the day: Turkish breakfast with a twist

The ideal way to start the day is a Turkish breakfast, which is rich, hearty, and delicious. When you order a breakfast “spread” at one of the restaurants on the Historic Peninsula – many of which have breathtaking Bosphorus or city views – you may be surprised by what arrives at your table. If you haven’t yet enjoyed the traditional Turkish breakfast, here’s a preview: a variety of cheeses including white, tulum and kaşar, çökelek or mihaliç; tasteful green and black olives from the Marmara, Aegean and North Aegean regions; fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and greens; and honey, homemade jams and kaymak (clotted cream).

Do sample menemen, the indispensable breakfast dish made with eggs, peppers, and tomatoes. And, of course, it is all accompanied by plenty of simit, warm bread, and freshly brewed tea in tulipshaped glasses.

10.00-14.00: The Historical Peninsula, an open-air museum in the heart of the city

After breakfast, you can explore the Historical Peninsula, which magnificently displays the city’s historical texture. The highlights of this open-air museum include the majestic and indescribably beautiful Hagia Sophia, the dramatic Blue Mosque, and the intriguing Basilica Cistern, as well as Topkapı Palace, where Ottoman sultans resided, and the İstanbul Archaeological Museum in its garden. A few steps from the Hagia Sophia is the Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum. The area is also home to several historic eateries where you can take a break for lunch and sample the famous Sultanahmet meatballs.

14.00-16.00: The Grand Bazaar, providing ‘shopping therapy’ to visitors for centuries

A short walk brings you to the bustling Grand Bazaar after lunch in Sultanahmet. Home to the city’s treasures, the Grand Bazaar invites you to find your own among a dazzling selection of carpets, ceramics and tiles, jewellery – and so much more!

16.00-18.00: A lovely Bosphorus sunset

Now it’s time to take the tram to Eminönü and visit the Spice Bazaar. Colourful and aromatic, this covered market features stalls with various foodstuffs and medicinal herbs, spices, dried fruits, and Turkish delight. From the Spice Bazaar, it’s a five-minute walk to the ferry piers and a Bosphorus tour. Generally departing on the hour, the tours vary in duration. On the short tour – about ninety minutes – you can view both sides of İstanbul from the Bosphorus while admiring the sunset. Before starting your tour, you can snack on fish bread from the nostalgic boats in the harbour.

19:30-22:30: Wonderful Turkish cuisine awaits you

After a boat ride along the Bosphorus, crown your first day in İstanbul with a delicious dinner at one of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants. İstanbul’s distinctive gastronomic scene offers delights from innovative and daring chefs who are proud of their traditions. Enjoy an unforgettable meal accompanied by fine Turkish wines.

SUNDAY – There is so much to do before saying Goodbye!

10.00-14.00: Live like an İstanbulite on Sunday

You can start your second day in the city with a breakfast of crispy simits, white cheese and tea in the side streets of Karaköy, just like a regular İstanbulite. Then, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Karaköy, which is famous for its bohemian cafes and art galleries. The road leads to Galataport İstanbul, the renewed port and the centre of attraction of Karaköy. You can take a coffee break in this modern oasis, which hosts high-end restaurants, cafes, and shops along the coastline, and reach İstanbul Modern, Türkiye’s first modern and contemporary art museum. The five-storey İstanbul Modern building, designed by star architect Renzo Piano, is as impressive as the artwork. Afterwards, you can enter the halls of the nearby İstanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture, where you can see exhibits of Türkiye’s finest artists.

14.00-18.30: There is so much to see in Taksim, right in the heart of the city

The historic Tünel (Tunnel), Türkiye’s first underground rail system and the world’s second oldest, connects Karaköy to İstiklal Street. Alight from the train, curve down the road and climb the Galata Tower, one of İstanbul’s most iconic symbols, for a panoramic view of the ancient city. Upon returning to İstiklal Street, you can explore this famous promenade on foot or via the nostalgic red tram. Stately buildings, arcades, large and small shops, galleries, bookstores, and famous churches, particularly St. Antuan, along with much more... During your street tour in İstanbul, a city renowned for its street flavours, you’ll pick up the scent of many delicious specialities, including fragrant roasted chestnuts and grilled corn, stuffed or fried mussels, kokoreç and other tasty snacks.

19.00-23.30: Have fun like an İstanbulite

Your walk down İstiklal Street concludes at Taksim Square and one of the city’s great temples to art, the spectacular Atatürk Cultural Centre (AKM). The magnificent Opera Hall of AKM, with a capacity of more than two thousand people, stages world-class shows and concerts. After a show, you can return to İstiklal Street and finish the evening with meze, fish and raki in one of the area’s celebrated taverns.

Gaya Traveller’s Jaunt to Khao Yai and Bangkok

Gaya Traveller’s long awaited postCOVID19 maiden flight finally took place, and we had our boss to thank for this milestone. The trip was part of Gaya Travel Magazine team’s getaway to Malaysians’ most favourite foreign travel destination: Thailand. Specifically Bangkok and Khao Yai.

The seven-day trip to the Land of Smiles did bring a lot of smiles despite the scorching heat of February 2024.

Upon touching down at Don Mueang International Airport, we were picked up by our privately chartered vans to have lunch at a nearby halal eatery called Brother’s Kitchen before heading straight to Khao Yai. Most halal restaurants we went to provide musolla (prayer room), which is convenient for travellers like us. We pleasantly discovered during this trip that halal food options and prayer facilities are now more accessible compared to the last time we were in Bangkok back in 2016.

ABOUT KHAO YAI

Nicknamed Thailand’s Mini Europe, Khao Yai is a town located about three hours’ drive away from Bangkok. This whimsical town is a few degrees cooler than Bangkok, and filled with many farms and various tourist attractions. It is best to visit Khao Yai between November to February, which are during the post-monsoon and winter season.

It is perhaps due to the cool temperature and sprawling landscape that Khao Yai turns out to be what it has become: a watering hole for budget travellersocial media enthusiasts. With the world’s deep fascination with Europe, having “Europe” closer to home seems to be a viable solution and compromise for many.

Khao Yai is a getaway city, which makes it a fun destination when travelling with a small group of friends, or family when time is a constraint. The attractions are nicely done, and we did sometimes forget that we were in Thailand.

While there are many who decide to make a daytrip to Khao Yai from Bangkok, we feel that it is more relaxing and enjoyable to stay for at least three nights at this tourist town because there are simply many things to see and do.

GETTING AROUND KHAO YAI

Since metered taxis or e-hailing ride are unavailable in Khao Yai, it is best to book private chartered transportation to get in and out as well as explore the town better.

HALAL RESTAURANTS IN KHAO YAI

Muslim travellers can be rest assured that they will not go hungry in Khao Yai. There are plenty of halal food outlets available here. Do take note that the restaurants in Khao Yai generally close early.

» Meat Lover Halal Cafe & Restaurant

About Bangkok

Mention Bangkok and three things come straight to our minds: food, shopping and massage! Indeed, Bangkok has plenty of choices to offer travellers at attractive prices. From the gleaming modern and luxurious air-conditioned mega malls, to the hustle and bustle of street markets, Bangkok surely has something for everyone.

WHERE TO SHOP?

» Malls

Bangkok has plenty of shopping malls to suit all kinds of lifestyles and budgets. We managed to squeeze in a few mall visits during our trip. In the land of shopping mall haven, where there are no less than 50 malls in Bangkok, how do you choose?

We love going into malls in Bangkok for the convenience of it. Not only there are hundreds (some malls claim to have thousands) of shops to choose from, Bangkok malls now offer plenty of halal

food outlets, including musolla (prayer rooms) to entice Muslim travellers. There are musolla facilities available at ICONSIAM (https://www.iconsiam. com/en), Siam Paragon (https://www. siamparagon.co.th), Platinum Fashion Mall (https://platinumfashionmall.com), and MBK Centre (https://www.mbkcenter.co.th). Hence, we do not steer far from these four malls.

ICONSIAM is dubbed “the mother of all malls” in Bangkok, so if you only had time for one mall visit, ICONSIAM should be your choice. Apart from the thousands of high-end shops and restaurants, there is also an indoor floating market here. Located just next to the Chao Phraya River, the building is a sight to behold. One could easily spend one whole day at ICONSIAM.

» Chatuchak Weekend Market

One of the largest markets in Southeast Asia, Chatuchak Market, is a great place for bargain hunting. The market is easily accesible using public transport. You can either head to the MRT Underground Station at Chatuchak Park, or the Mo Chit BTS Skytrain Station. It is reachable by bus too. Chatuchak is the ultimate outdoor Bangkok shopping experience. You will be amazed by its sprawling size, but perhaps even more so by the unbelievable variety of wares. Haggling is encouraged. Home to 8,000 market stalls spread over 27 acres, it is said that on a typical weekend, more than 200,000 shoppers come here to sift through the goods on offer. Do wear light comfortable clothing as it can get really hot and humid as the day progresses. Remember to also bring cash! Free maps are available at the information kiosks. Always be on alert while you shop.

Opening hours: Fridays 6:00 p.m. until midnight; Saturdays & Sundays 9:00 a.m. –6:00 p.m.

» Floating Market

Floating markets in Bangkok are among the city’s star attractions. A visit to Bangkok is not deemed complete without a visit to a floating market. The chaos and colours, including the novelty of buying a snack from a passing boat, make for an experience like no other.

We visited the most popular one, Damnoen Saduak, which is located about 100 kilometres from Bangkok, taking us more than one hour to reach. At times the market does feel a bit too touristy, but it was a lovely experience nonetheless. There are two boat options to choose from: a motorboat, or a rowboat. We highly recommend taking the rowboat, which is quieter and does not emit smelly diesel fumes while you navigate along the canals around the floating market.

Damnoen Saduak is open daily from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

WHAT TO EAT?

HALAL FOOD IN BANGKOK

Thailand is known for its diverse food scene, and as Muslim travellers, we try to find halal food whenever possible. Bangkok’s food culture is a melting pot of flavours, with influences from Thai, Chinese, Indian and Middle eastern cuisines.

Finding halal food in Bangkok is relatively easy; apps like Google Maps, Halal Navi and Zabihah let you know that a delicious halal meal is not too far away. We asked friends for recommendations as well, and these places come highly recomended:

• Halal food court located along Kamphaeng Phet 7 Road in Suan Luang

• Lang Ram Grilled Fish (https://www.wongnai.com/ restaurants/langramplapao) on Rama IX

• Samat Muslim Food in Pratunam, around five minutes’ walk from Platinum Fashion Mall

• Usman Thai Muslim Food (FB: usmanthaimuslimfood) on Sukhumvit Soi 22

• Phrigkiao Bangkok (FB : phrigkiaobkk) at Siam Square.

• Yana Restaurant (https://www.yanarestaurant. com/) at MBK Centre

» Importance of Travel Insurance

Travelling is not without its risks. Admittedly, when we first began travelling independently, travel insurance was not on our priority list. However, throughout the years, as we turned into seasoned travellers, we realised that bad and unfortunate things could happen, and it is in our best interest to get ourselves covered. Mishaps like medical emergencies, flight delays, loss of belongings, and cancelled trips due to unforeseen circumstances may catch us by surprise, so having travel insurance help ease the risk of unexpected expenses and anxieties.

We had our firsthand experience on how important travel insurance is during this trip: our flight back to Kuala Lumpur was delayed seven hours. As compensation, we get to wait in the comforts of the airport premium lounge, including money. Do shop around to compare the best travel insurance that suits your needs.

» Food Haul at Convenience Stores

Considered as must-go when in Thailand is the country’s impressive convenience stores, and the most popular one is 7-Eleven. Muslim travellers will find it convenient to find halal ready-to-eat food at such stores while on the go and when halal restaurants are hard to find. You will be pleasantly surprised to find

that there is an array of certified halal food selection at the convenience stores. One such popular food is the CP brand burgers; we tried a few and decided that our favourite burger is the AA brand’s Seafood Burger. Besides burgers, you can find certified halal snacks, meals, and drinks to keep your hunger at bay.

» Value Added Tax (VAT) Refund

As Bangkok is a popular shopping destination, you would be glad to know that the city has a VAT refund scheme for tourists. Look out for the “VAT Refund for Tourist” signs at the participating shops. The store assistant will help you complete the VAT Refund Application Form should you qualify, and don’t forget to bring your passport when shopping. We were pleasantly surprised that the refunds are not only for luxury goods, but also available at the supermarkets!

We find that the whole VAT refund process a breeze. As soon as we cleared security checks upon checking in at Don Mueang Airport, we looked for the VAT refund counters and handed in our forms to the officer on duty. As soon as the officer is done processing our application, we were handed the refund in cash.

» Public Transport

Bangkok is notorious for its “Bangkok Jam”, where one can be stuck in traffic for a long time. The fastest way to go around Bangkok is still by the BTS Skytrain or the underground MRT. Other popular options

include the local auto rickshaw called tuk-tuk, taxi, and Grab e-hailing. We should warn you about Bangkok’s Grab: it might not be as efficient as what one would expect in Malaysia or Singapore, whereby the wait to get a driver could be at least 15 minutes, probably due to traffic congestion. But we love the convenience of using Grab e-hailing; we can use our existing Grab app and it takes care of language barriers between us and the drivers.

A BIG THANK YOU!

We would like to express our gratitude to our friends for their suggestions of places to eat in Khao Yai and Bangkok.

The list was so long we think it is enough to keep us going back to Bangkok every other month! Aroi Mak!

See you again, Bangkok! Sawadee Ka

DELVE INTO THE HISTORICAL KAMPUNG LAUT HERITAGE SITE

Nestling near the glistening waters of Kelantan River, Kampung Laut Heritage Site of (Laman Warisan Kampung Laut) offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, picturesque villages, cultural heritage, and a tranquil way of life.

This charming coastal village is a hidden gem that attracts both local and international travellers who seek an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Kampung Laut, which is now gazetted as a heritage site, comprises three main parts: the Serunding Heritage Site (Laman Warisan Serunding), the Art Heritage Site (Laman Warisan Seni), and Kampung Laut Mosque.

SERUNDING HERITAGE SITE (LAMAN WARISAN SERUNDING)

Indulge your taste buds in a Kelantanese delight at the Serunding Heritage Site! Take home serunding – a savoury meat floss made from succulent meat, a dash of coconut milk, a sprinkle of onions, pepper, and a symphony of aromatic spices, which are all cooked and mixed to perfection. It’s the necessary condiment that elevates

Kelantanese dishes to a whole new level. Your palate is in for a rollercoaster ride of flavours –sweet, salty, and a hint of zing! Choose from an array of serunding options like Serunding Daging Tempatan (local meat), Serunding Daging Import (imported meat), Serunding Ayam (chicken), and Serunding Ikan (fish). If that were not enough, be sure to check out the sweet flavours of dodol (toffee-like palm sugar confection) and gelembung boyo (traditional confection made from grated coconut, glutinous rice and pandan paste).

ART HERITAGE SITE (LAMAN WARISAN SENI)

Kelantan is well-known as the cradle of Malay culture the state is rich in arts and crafts that have been passed down from generation to generation. The Art Heritage Site is developed to preserve and promote such artistic and cultural heritage of the Kelantanese community in Kampung Laut.

The local artists here are renowned for their skills in producing ornate products such as batik, kites, calligraphy artworks, and handicraft items. Travellers get the opportunity to witness how these crafts are made and even try making them too, which they can take home as a lovely souvenir!

KAMPUNG LAUT MOSQUE

At the heart of Kampung Laut Heritage Site stands the area’s crown jewel: the ageold Kampung Laut Mosque. This venerable structure boasts a history that can be traced as far back as the 16th century, thus earning its distinction as Malaysia’s oldest mosque.

Legend has it that a band of intrepid Muslim missionaries (mubaligh) from the Sultanate of Demak in Java found themselves unexpectedly marooned in Kampung Laut due to a mishap with their seafaring vessel when they were making their way to Champa. In gratitude for their safe landing, they constructed the nowiconic Kampung Laut Mosque. Fast forward to the late 19th century, during the reign of the Kelantan Sultan from 1859 to 1900, this mosque served as a pivotal hub for royal rendezvous and spiritual gatherings.

Over the centuries, the Kampung Laut Mosque underwent a series of renovations and reconstructions while preserving its traditional architectural style which is quintessentially Malay. Characterised by its multi-tiered roof, intricate wood carvings, and traditional Islamic geometric patterns, the fascinating design showcases the craftsmanship and woodworking skills of the local artisans.

Remarkably, not a single nail was utilised in its construction – a testament to the traditional Malay builders’ prowess. Today, this hallowed edifice not only stands as a marker of religious devotion but also an indelible emblem of Kelantan’s storied past and authentic cultural heritage. The mosque’s historical and architectural eminence warrants it a must-see attraction for visitors to Kelantan, offering a glimpse into the enduring vitality of Malay culture.

DIKIR REBANA KERCING

Dikir Rebana Kercing is a mesmerising musical spectacle exclusive to Kelantan. Originating from the quaint village of Kampung Laut over a century and a half ago, it began as a delightful pastime for Arab traders frequenting the area. Today, it graces royal coronations, weddings, and significant Islamic occasions like Maulidul Rasul, owing to its deeply ingrained Islamic essence.

Decked in costumes that fuse Malay and Arabic influences, Rebana Kercing performers rhythmically chant verses in both languages. Each song unveils a vibrant dance, weaving tales

of life wisdom, moral codes, and religious doctrines. The ensemble comprises 22 artists, with a dozen dancers and ten “pemalu rebana” (percussionists).

Once a cherished tradition, this unique art form began to fade. That was when the Dikir Rebana Kercing Kampung Laut Association stepped in to ensure that the next generation picks up the mantle. Fortunately, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), in collaboration with the Kelantan state government and the US Embassy of Malaysia, also joined forces to safeguard this cultural gem from being extinct.

In 2022, a generous grant from the US Ambassador Fund Award breathed new life into Dikir Rebana Kercing. The funds were allocated for a comprehensive research and documentation effort, led by UMK academicians. This pivotal project paved the way for Dikir Rebana Kercing to become a vibrant extracurricular activity for UMK students and even found a place in the school curricula.

Kampung Laut Heritage Site is the ultimate portal to step back in time and immerse yourself in the timeless tapestry of Kelantanese culture. From the tranquil, picturesque surroundings to the captivating traditions that have defied the ravages of time, Kampung Laut invites you on an unforgettable expedition. So, pack your bags and brace for an adventure that spans generations!

Jordan: Storytelling of a Journey Through Time

A land steeped in history and brimming with natural wonders, Jordan beckons travellers from across the globe to embark on a journey of discovery. This timeless land needs no introduction, as many travellers, including me, have this destination on their definite bucket list. So, imagine how thrilled I was when I had the chance to experience the best of what Jordan has to offer along with other members of the media and tour agents, courtesy of a meticulously curated Familiarisation (Fam) Trip organised by MATTA in collaboration with Jordan Tourism Board.

I had a great time exploring Jordan despite the crisis happening in the bordering countries, which ramifications affect the whole world. Despite the tumult, Jordan remains peaceful, hence safe for international travellers like me. My trip coincided with the end of winter; therefore, it did get a little too cold for me in the middle of the Wadi Rum desert at 5° Celsius during the night, but I enjoyed the weather when the temperature hovered between 16° Celsius and 21° Celsius at other places. I reckon February might be one of the best times to visit this country in the heart of the Middle East.

Join me as I recount the highlights of this unforgettable eight-day expedition through Jordan.

Clockwise from above: Visitors at Mount Nebo Interpretation Centre can learn about the collection of intricate mosaics found in the area that have been salvaged and conserved; The Treasury (Al-Khazneh) is one of Petra’s most iconic and elaborate rock-cut tombs; Obelisk Tomb is one of the notable facades in Petra; Gigantic rock-cut facades in Petra.

MADABA – The Ancient City of Mosaic Art

Our exploration in Jordan began in the ancient city of Madaba, home to Mount Nebo, an elevated ridge about 45 minutes from Amman city centre. It holds historical and religious significance, being mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted the view of the Promised Land before he passed away.

Mount Nebo’s summit offers panoramic views of the Holy Land, with Jerusalem and Jericho visible on clear days. The site is also home to a Byzantine church and the serpentine cross sculpture by Italian artist Gian Paolo Fantoni, symbolising Moses’ bronze serpent and the crucifixion of Jesus.

Intrigued to learn more, I spent quite some time at the Mount Nebo Interpretation Centre, a modest yet significant museum-like establishment housing a collection of mosaics salvaged from churches in Khirbat al-Mukhayyat and ‘Ayoun Musa, including Roman milestones that directed pilgrims to the site, and artefacts from the Iron Age.

I even visited the monastery, known as the Memorial Church of Moses, to admire the vast collection of beautiful mosaics adorning the walls and the floor. This monastery stood strong for almost 600 years and is now managed by the Franciscan Archaeological Institute to ensure the legacy of this sacred place continues for future generations.

On the way to Madaba city centre, we stopped by The Handicraft Centre Mosaic Workshop, located inside Jabal Beni Hamida Antiques, to see how the ancient art of mosaicmaking is kept alive.

This handicraft is part of a tradition that dates back to the Byzantine period, therefore most of the artworks here draw inspiration from that period, especially from the surrounding areas like Mount Nebo, The Valley of Moses and the ancient city of Madaba. Tourists can witness the art of mosaicmaking, as well as be involved in hands-on experience or shop for souvenirs like mosaic paintings, crafts, and carpets. This workshop is part of a programme under the Queen Noor Foundation to train and nurture more inspiring artists, especially women, to subsequently create more job opportunities and sources of income, while preserving this ancient craftsmanship.

We had lunch at Haret Jdoudna before leaving Madaba. This was a special experience for us because Haret Jdoudna is a well-known restaurant in Madaba that offers a rich dining experience, combining delicious food with a touch of history. Even the building, in which this restaurant resides, is an old house built by Madaba’s first mayor Ibrahim Jumean together with world-renowned architects, now transformed into an atmospheric setting that reflects the rich culinary heritage of the region. It is now a landmark of Madaba, known for its Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, with vegetarian, vegan, halal, and gluten-free options available.

PETRA – The Rose-Red Ancient City

No journey to Jordan would be complete without a visit to Petra, the crown jewel of the country’s archaeological treasures. On the second day of the trip, I was overwhelmed with excitement because Petra has always been on my bucket list.

Petra is an ancient city that was once the capital of the Nabataean kingdom; it is famous for its rock-cut architecture, water conduit system, and rose-red sandstone cliffs. It was a prosperous trading hub until it declined due to changing trade routes and natural disasters. This city had almost lost through time in the desert until it was rediscovered by a Swiss explorer in 1812.

Petra is located in Wadi Musa, named after the Valley of Moses, where Moses is said to have struck water from a rock. The spring water still runs through Wadi Musa today, using a sophisticated water system through pipes and tunnels constructed by The Nabateans. The water system was one of the reasons why Petra thrived as a trade centre in the desert.

Petra is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site due to its exceptional rock-cut architecture and ancient water management system. The site reflects the artistic and engineering achievements of the Nabataeans, Romans, and Byzantines, showcasing significant cultural heritage. Petra is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

We rode a buggy to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra as we did not have much time for our journey. Between the Visitor Centre and the entrance to Al Siq, we passed notable facades such as Djinn Blocks, Obelisk Tomb, Bab as-Siq Triclinium,

and Aslah Triclinium Complex.

We also passed through Al Siq, the main entrance to the ancient city, which is a narrow, winding gorge that stretches about 1.2 km and leads directly to Al Khazneh (The Treasury). This geological formation was created by tectonic forces and later smoothed by water erosion.

Then, we arrived right in front of The Treasury, one of Petra’s most iconic and elaborate rock-cut tombs. I was overwhelmed and in awe! Despite its name, The Treasury was likely not used to store treasure; instead, the moniker was derived from the carving in the shape of an urn at the top of the façade believed to hold treasure belonging to an Egyptian pharaoh.

The total distance from the visitor centre to the ancient city centre is approximately four kilometres, so it is advisable that you wear comfortable clothes and a pair of good walking shoes when visiting this place. The entrance fee starts from JOD50 (MYR329) for one-day entry, JOD55 (MYR361) for two-day entry, and JOD60 (MYR394) for three-day entry, using the prevailing exchange rate of MYR6.58 to JOD1.

In this spread, clockwise from top left: One of the best ways to enjoy the view of Wadi Rum is to traverse the mounting dunes and rocky outcrops using jeep; The café at Sun City Camp has the biggest dome of all, offering an almost 360-degree view of Wadi Rum; Riding on camels to a nearby sunset spot; Sun City Camp is the best place to capture enchanting sceneries, especially at night under the starry sky.

WADI RUM – The Valley of the Moon

Leaving Petra behind, on the third day, we ventured into the otherworldly realm of Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, a vast desert landscape that has captured the imaginations of travellers for centuries.

Since it was still winter, the temperature change was extreme; it was 16°C during the day to 6 °C at night. So, lying on the sandy ground while waiting for sunset became a truly amazing first-hand experience for us travellers who hail from the equatorial climate.

This valley was formed by sandstone and granite rock, creating a surreal landscape spanning approximately 720 square kilometres, making it the largest wadi (river valley) in Jordan. It boasts tough rocky outcrops of red rock, flat sandy areas, and salt pans. Towering sandstone mountains, narrow canyons, and vast, wavelike dunes contribute to its appeal. Due to these features, Wadi Rum was selected as the film location for blockbuster movies like Dune (2024), The Martian (2015), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Prometheus (2012) and more.

The Wadi Rum Protected Area has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011. Prehistoric civilisations have left their mark in Wadi Rum through petroglyphs, rock inscriptions, and ancient ruins. The village of Wadi Rum is home to several hundred Bedouin inhabitants who live in traditional goat-hair tents and concrete houses.

Our accommodation at Sun City Camp offered a luxurious yet authentic Bedouin experience, with Martian-like dome tents providing a cosy retreat beneath the star-studded desert sky.

We explored the desert of Wadi Rum by jeep, traversing dunes and rocky outcrops, including discovering ancient petroglyphs etched on stone by civilisations long gone. We also visited a Bedouin camp that provided insight into the traditional way of life that still thrives in this remote corner of the world and savoured the hearty and delicious local dish called Maqluba rice for lunch.

and healing. The factory also includes a souvenir shop where visitors can purchase these products, often at discounted prices.

As we departed for Amman on the next day, we had a stop in the southern region of Al-Salt to visit The Maqam of Prophet Shuaib, a revered religious site significant to Muslims, Christians, and Jews and is associated with Prophet Shuaib, who is mentioned in the Quran.

This site is believed to be the burial place of Shuaib – also known as Jethro – and is considered a place of pilgrimage and prayer. The shrine, including the accompanying mosque, dates back to the Umayyad era and houses the tomb of Prophet Shuaib, along with several other archaeological landmarks. Though the mosque was under renovation during our visit, we learned that visitors to the Maqam can engage in prayer, and reflection, and learn about the story of Prophet Shuaib and his teachings.

In this spread, clockwise from previous page: The Dead Sea is renowned for its high salinity, which allows effortless floating, while its mineral-rich waters and mud are believed to have therapeutic properties; At the Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa, guests have the privacy of dipping into the therapeutic seawater at a private beach; The Maqam (tomb) of Prophet Shuaib, also known as Jethro.

In this spread, clockwise from left: The Umayyad Palace at Amman Citadel; The most prominent and intriguing vestige at Amman Citadel is the Temple of Hercules with an impressive size that is larger than any surviving temple in Rome; The Roman Theatre in downtown Amman that can be seen from Amman Citadel; Amman downtown is full of contrasts with its mix of traditional souks and modern shops.

The Temple of Hercules stands as a testament to the Roman architectural prowess and the historical significance of the Amman Citadel as a cultural and religious centre throughout the ages.

We culminated our day in Amman with a brisk walk in the Downtown, known as Al-Balad. It is the historic heart of the city and is believed to have been inhabited since the Neolithic period.

Downtown Amman has a very contrasting environment compared to the new town, where it is bustling with a mix of traditional markets souqs and modern shops, reflecting the city’s rich history and contemporary culture. The area is also known for its food scene, offering a variety of local and international cuisines. If you are keen to try the local delicacy, it is worth swinging by Habibah Sweets for its kunafeh and Hashem Restaurant for its delectable fare.

As the sun set on our final day in Amman, it marked not just the end of our journey but the beginning of a lifelong appreciation of Jordan. The warmth of its people, the richness of its culture, and the unparalleled beauty of its natural and historical sites make it a destination that captivates the heart and enriches the mind.

Reflecting on this unforgettable expedition, it’s clear that the essence of Jordan cannot be fully captured through words or pictures alone — it must be experienced first-hand. The memories made, the sights beheld, and the knowledge gained on this trip will resonate with me forever. For those seeking adventure, history, or simply a connection to a land that has been the crossroads of civilisations, Jordan offers an experience unlike any other.

I must thank our guide Mr. Basel Al Haj Ahmad for sharing his informative, extensive, and valuable knowledge regarding Jordan during this trip.

To Jordan, I say, shukran (‘thank you’) for the memories, the lessons, and the hospitality.

Gaya Travel Magazine team extends its heartfelt gratitude to Jordan Tourism Board and the Malaysian Association of Travel and Tour Agents (MATTA) for making the writer’s trip possible and smooth sailing.

Bewitching Almaty

Peering through the frosty veil of my hotel window, I couldn’t help but marvel at the transformation outside. Last night’s snowstorm had its dramatic fling, yet now, the sun bathes everything in a radiant glow, as if to erase any hint of last night’s wintry skirmish. The cityscape, draped in a thick, pristine blanket of snow, stretches towards the majestic Tian Shan mountains. Birds flit about the trees, adding a touch of whimsiness to the scene. Am I in Narnia, or has Almaty simply cast its magical spell on me?

Almaty, Kazakhstan’s former capital wears many hats: financial hub, cultural epicentre, and historical gem. With a population nearing two million, Almaty pulsates with life, drawing in travellers eager to uncover its secrets. Did you know its previous name, Alma-Ata, translates to ‘father of apples’ in Russian? Legend has it that the modern apple finds its origins in the fertile soil of these parts, where wild fruits and Malus sieversii, the ancestor of today’s beloved apples, have thrived for millennia.

But it’s not just about apples here — nature here dances to its own tune, offering a symphony of contrasts that leave you breathless. In a single day, you can scale snow-capped peaks, meander through fragrant pine forests, and venture into the rolling dunes of endless steppes. And let’s also not forget the tantalising local cuisine and vibrant cultures waiting to be discovered.

So, if you were planning a visit to Almaty, here’s a taste of what awaits — a curated guide to the must-see wonders of this enchanting city.

ARRIVING IN ALMATY

AirAsia X has made it delightfully simple with its pioneering direct flights, bridging Southeast Asia and Central Asia like never before. A mere seven hours and 40 minutes aboard the trusty Airbus A330-300, and you’ll be swapping palm trees for snow-capped peaks.

Choose from 12 premium flatbeds for a bit of luxury or settle into one of the 365 Economy seats configured in a cosy 2-4-2 layout. For those who prefer tranquillity over toddler tantrums, the Quiet Zone offers an oasis of calm – for a small extra fee, of course.

Remember, meals aren’t included in your ticket. Pre-book your meal online or decide onboard; the menu’s a delight, and I must say, the Bukhara Chicken Biryani is a spice-infused delicacy not to be missed. Booking is a breeze on https://www.airasia.com/ en/gb or via the AirAsia MOVE app, formerly the airasia Superapp.

WHERE TO VISIT IN ALMATY?

» Huns Ethno-village

First on your Almaty itinerary should be a trip to the Huns Ethno-village. Here, the past comes alive as you witness the captivating lifestyle of Kazakh nomads. Forget dusty displays behind glasses as visitors will get to meet locals dressed in traditional garb, eager to share their fascinating traditions, ceremonies, and folklores!

Feast on a local food spread that tantalises your taste buds before witnessing a warrior battle reenactment so fierce, you would half expect a Hollywood director to yell “Cut”! Ever ground flour the old-fashioned way? Now’s your chance! Learn alongside the art of spinning yarn and unravel the mysteries of the yurt, the ingenious home of the steppe nomads. But the mane attraction (pun intended), for me at least, is the awe-inspiring horse-riding tricks show. Prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking skill and horsemanship, truly a testament to the enduring bond between the Kazakh people and their steeds.

» Ascension Cathedral

Pay homage to Almaty’s storied past at the Ascension Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. Built in the early 20th century and remarkably resilient, having withstood the 1911 earthquake, it’s a testament to architectural ingenuity and spiritual perseverance. Now under the care of the Russian Orthodox Church, it stands as a serene and sacred space, echoing its 110-year-old grandeur. Do remember to tread with respect as you take in its historical splendour.

Clockwise from left: The picturesque Big Almaty Lake reflecting the Tian Shan Mountains; the 30-metre Ferris wheel at Kok Tobe Park allows visitors to admire the dreamy panorama of Almaty; Shymbulak Mountain Resort is one of the best ski resorts in Central Asia; learn the art of spinning yarn at the Huns Ethno-village; opt for the Premium Flatbed when flying with AirAsia X for a touch of luxury at a fraction of the normal Business Class price.

» Shymbulak Mountain Resort

Then, buckle up for a scenic escape to Shymbulak Mountain Resort. This crown jewel of winter sports in Central Asia boasts enough pistes (that’s posh for “ski slopes”) to keep even the most seasoned skier happy. And the best part? It’s a mere 15-kilometre drive from the city centre, so you can swap bustling bazaars for pristine slopes in a flash. Nestled within the vast Ile-Alatau State National Park, Shymbulak offers stunning scenery – think dramatic peaks that wouldn’t look out of place in a Tolkien novel – at a fraction of the price you’d pay in Europe or Japan. The beauty isn’t reserved for winter warriors since hikers and horseback riders flock here year-round to soak up the otherworldly landscapes.

» Kok Tobe Park

When visiting Almaty, make sure to not miss the delightful Kok Tobe Park, perched majestically on the mountainside. Although you can reach this lofty haven by car, I implore you to take the cable car for a journey that promises to be as picturesque as it is memorable. Especially during the golden hours, the park and surrounding peaks transform into a painter’s dream. At the summit, visitors will find a charming mini zoo, quaint souvenir shops, and a 30-metre Ferris wheel that brings out the child in everyone. Don’t miss the observation deck, where you can snap the perfect panoramic shot of Almaty, with the iconic 372-metre television tower watching over your shoulder.

» Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen

Next, breathe in the fresh air beneath the canopy of ancient oaks, maples, and firs at the park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, one of the oldest parks in

Almaty. It’s a favourite retreat for locals, who come here to read, relax, and feed the ever-hungry pigeons. But the park also holds a deeper significance. Here, travellers can learn about the valiant soldiers who defended Moscow during World War II, immortalised in the park’s central monument. An eternal flame also flickers here, serving as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made.

» Green Bazaar

The Green Bazaar is basically Almaty on a plate – or should I say, in a shopping bag? This popular market is your one-stop shop for souvenirs, local eats, and a good dose of people-watching. The market was first established in the 1970s and has earned a reputation as one of Central Asia’s cleanest and most organised markets. Get ready to lose yourself in a labyrinthine world of stalls overflowing with vibrant spices, mountains of glistening dried fruit, and enough nuts to keep a squirrel army happy for a lifetime. And with a bit of friendly conversation and playful haggling, you might just score unique souvenirs at unbeatable prices. Remember, a smile and a charming quip can go a long way.

» Rakhat Chocolate Shop

Kazakhstanis have a sweet spot for chocolate, and Rakhat chocolates are their national pride. With over 70 years of chocolatey goodness under its belt, the Rakhat brand is basically the Willy Wonka of Central Asia. There’s a shop near the Green Bazaar where travellers can stock up on all sorts of delicious treats. Think beautifully wrapped boxes and chocolates in every flavour imaginable. Be sure to grab Rakhat’s classic milk chocolate: the sky-blue wrapper is the same colour as the Kazakh flag, making it the ultimate Almaty memento.

Clockwise from above: The Ascension Cathedral survived a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in 1911, which toppled 770 buildings in Almaty; a feast of local delicacies in Almaty; Rakhat’s classic milk chocolate makes an ultimate Almaty memento.

Hawa Mahal looks resplendent with the stunning golden sunset hues as the backdrop

Jaipur Jamboree : A Colourful Adventure in India’s Pink City

The mesmerising sights and pulsating sounds of the streets of Jaipur, famously known as the Pink City, never leave me, even though I am already back home in Malaysia, as if incessantly beckoning me to return.

My first taste of this intoxicating city was during the four-day and three-night trip with AirAsia on 3 to 6 May 2024. From the visit to the jaw-dropping Amber Fort that stands majestically atop the Aravalli hills down to the bustling markets teeming with artisans and traders, Jaipur is continuously captivating with its timeless allure.

One of the highlights of my trip was the intricately designed City Palace, a splendid fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture. One of my favourite moments in Jaipur was enjoying a refreshing Coke at a café opposite the Hawa Mahal while the setting sun painted the sky in glorious hues. As I snapped photos, the iconic Palace of Winds seemed to glow with

elegance, its intricate façade a testament to Jaipur’s architectural splendour.

But perhaps the most unforgettable experience was strolling through the bustling bazaars of Jaipur, where the air is filled with the aroma of spices and the sound of buyers bargaining with sellers. From the intricate handicrafts of Johari Bazaar to the colourful textiles of Bapu Bazaar, each market offers a treasure trove of delights waiting to be discovered.

Join me as I delve into the brilliant tapestry of Jaipur, encouraging you to explore the charm and allure that lie within the Pink City’s bustling streets and grand palaces.

The mesmerising view at 45 minutes to 7:00 a.m. in Tioman as the sun was beginning to rise, ready to bathe the island in its radiance.

Finding Peace in Pulau Tioman’s Embrace

What’s one word to describe Tioman? Peace? Tranquillity? As soon as my feet sank into the warm, grainy pearly sand, my mind filled with so many thoughts. Honestly, I’m not a beach kind of girl. Growing up in a city of glass, metal, and concrete, I am used to the sounds of honking cars and the sight of crowded streets. I had made peace with the noise and the hustle, strange as it may sound.

But as I stood on the beach, a soft breeze brushed against my skin, carrying the scent of salt and sea. The rhythm of the waves gently hitting the shore was like nature’s lullaby, so different from the urban scene I knew so well. The ocean stretched endlessly, a soothing blue that met the sky at the horizon, making everything else seem small and distant.

Who knew that Tioman’s mesmerising landscape is an antidote for those who wanted to escape reality? The simplicity of the island, the beach, the sun, and the sea was something I had never truly appreciated until now.

Kampung Juara: A Hidden Paradise

Tucked away on the serene island of Tioman off Malaysia’s east coast, Kampung Juara is a hidden gem awaiting exploration. With only 200 to 300 native residents, it felt like stumbling upon a concealed paradise. The golden sands of the untouched beaches meet the crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea. This cosy village offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

It took 30 minutes from Tanjung Gemok jetty to arrive at Kampung Juara, which is filled with signs of communal verve: cosy roadside restaurants with delicious aromas wafting out, bustling mini markets filled with locals going about their business, and even a small school where children played joyfully.

Walking around, I noticed that Kampung Juara is also home to a turtle sanctuary, where visitors can visit and learn more about how important turtles are to the ocean and the different

threats they face. It was both fun and educational, and I found myself even more fascinated by these incredible creatures. I learned that the staff work hard in monitoring and assisting with the turtles’ egg fertilisation process. However, this important work happens without any outsiders watching. The reason, I discovered, is to keep the turtles calm and stress-free, ensuring they don’t feel pressured by human presence.

Back in the village, I was welcomed with open arms by the friendly locals. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel right at home, as I had been a part of the community for years. I spent my days exploring the narrow lanes and hidden trails, then ended my day by hanging out at the local eateries, devouring flavours as vibrant as the surrounding scenery. It may be a small village, but its beauty and charm are boundless.

A Serene Escape: Three Days in Barat Tioman Resort

Arriving at Barat Tioman Resort (https://barattioman.com/), I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. Coming from the city, the idea of spending three days in Kampung Juara on Tioman Island was both thrilling and daunting. The 30-minute jeep ride gave me plenty of time to wonder

what awaited me at the end of the journey. As I arrived at the resort, all my wonders melted away as I saw the beautiful retreat just in front of the beach.

As I stepped into the open-concept lobby, I was greeted by comfortable seating that invited me to rest after the bumpy ride. Welcome drinks were offered to all guests, adding a touch of hospitality. The open space allowed me to take in the stunning ocean view while waiting to be checked in.

The check-in process was smooth and hassle-free. The friendly staff quickly handled the formalities and then showed me to my room. The room was spacious, with enough space for two single beds. It featured a segregated shower and toilet, providing convenience and privacy. There was a safety box to store my precious belongings and a small porch outside where I could dry off after a dip in the ocean.

The resort itself was stunning, with a huge pool placed right among the rooms for easy access. It’s the perfect spot to cool off after a day at the beach. There is a lovely spa too where you can relax and pamper yourself. The environment is filled with trees, adding to the peaceful vibe.

As night descended, the resort’s atmosphere turned lively. The bars opened their doors, and the sound of laughter and music filled the air. A short fire show captivated the audience, casting a warm glow over the night sky. It was a magical experience, one that would stay with me long after the night had passed.

Although I hoped to witness the famed sunrise of Tioman Island, the unpredictable weather had other plans. Nevertheless, as I gazed out at the serene beauty of the surroundings, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a magical moment. In that tranquil morning light, I felt a profound sense of connection to the world around me, humbled by the majesty of the natural world.

After the blocks were dry enough, the divers later would plant the blocks underwater to support the growth of new corals. Learning about the importance of coral reefs and witnessing firsthand the efforts to preserve them was a truly eye-opening experience.

Unfortunately, spending extended periods in the ocean water left my skin feeling irritated and sensitive. Thankfully, Watsons Malaysia’s recently launched all-new Naturals by Watsons Algae range came to the rescue, soothed my skin and restored its natural balance. The product’s 24-hour intensive hydration made my skin feeling soft and supple all day! With my skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, I was able to dive back into the water without hesitation, ready to continue exploring the wonders of the underwater world.

A Day of Ocean Wonders and Village Charm

My day started with a snorkelling activity. It was an experience that left me breathless in more ways than one. As I slipped into the water and began to explore the vibrant coral reefs and teeming marine life below, I marvelled at the resilience of nature. The ocean continued to thrive and in that moment, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the chance to witness such beauty, and I vowed to do my part to protect and preserve this precious ecosystem for generations to come.

During my time at the resort, I had the opportunity to participate in a coral reef conservation project, an experience that left a lasting impact on me. Alongside other guests, I helped to create coral reef blocks that were made from glass bottles that were crushed and then mixed with sand to produce an alternative concrete mix. Recycled glass bottles were then arranged on

After my exhilarating snorkelling adventure, I decided to explore the village of Kampung Juara on a rented motorcycle. Winding through narrow streets and picturesque landscapes, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty

of the destination. Making small talk with the friendly locals, I discovered hidden gems and charming spots tucked away in every corner.

From thrilling adventures to moments of quiet reflection, every moment spent in this hidden paradise was a treasure to be cherished. As I journeyed back to the mainland, I carried with me a newfound appreciation for the beauty of nature and a commitment to preserving it for generations to come. 1. Seek Safe Stays

Your sanctuary away from home should be a haven of security. Prioritise reputable accommodations vetted by the government for their commitment to safety and hospitality. For Muslim travellers seeking an extra layer of assurance, look out for the MuslimFriendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition (MFAR) programme certification by Islamic Tourism Centre. These establishments undergo meticulous procedures to guarantee a comfortable stay, complete with halal amenities, dedicated prayer spaces, and even facilities with womenonly hours.

2. Navigate with Nuance

When it comes to getting around, opt for registered public transport services and stick to official booking channels for metered taxis, buses, and ferries to ensure your journey is both seamless and secure. Some train services, like Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), even offer women-only coaches for peace of mind. Or, you may consider booking through e-hailing services like Grab and AirAsia ride, which are equipped with safety features for peace of mind. In the Klang Valley, the MyCity Pass offers unlimited rides, sparing you the hassle of ticket queues and fare negotiations.

3. Curate Experiences Confidently

Select tour operators with a stellar reputation to curate your Malaysian escapades. Be sure to read the reviews and recommendations to discern the crème de la crème of excursion providers. By choosing wisely, you can embark on adventures with the assurance of safety and quality.

4. Dress Decently, Respectfully

Embrace Malaysia’s tropical climate with lightweight attire. Short pants and sleeveless shirts are an accepted norm in the city centres nowadays, but remember to dress respectfully when in public offices, religious sites, small towns and rural areas. While beachwear is permissible at tourist hotspots, nudity is a strict no-no. Opt for comfortable footwear to traverse the terrain with ease.

5. Engage with the Locals

Unlock the secrets of Malaysia’s vibrant cultures and landscapes by engaging with the locals, be it the hotel staff, stall vendors and taxi drivers. They can offer invaluable insights into off-the-beaten-path gems and areas to avoid. Besides, with each interaction, you forge connections that enrich your journey in profound ways.

6. Wander Wisely with a Guide

Go on a reputable walking tour to acquaint yourself with your new surroundings. Not only does this provide a comprehensive introduction to the city, but it’s also an opportunity to glean safety tips from seasoned guides. Muslim travellers can opt for guides with Muslim-Friendly Tour Guide (MFTG) certification for tailored experiences that cater to their needs.

7. Stay Sharp, Stay Safe

Stay sharp and stay safe. In unfamiliar places, especially at night or in crowds, do trust your gut — if it feels off, it probably is. And while Malaysia is generally safe, don’t let your guard down and watch your belongings to avoid any unwelcome surprises.

And now that you’re ready to immerse yourself in Malaysia’s wonders, here are some top activities to add to your itinerary:

• Retail Therapy at Central Market

A visit to the Central Market is a must when in Malaysia.

Dive headfirst into the bustling energy of Central Market, where you’ll discover a kaleidoscope of local wonders, from Royal Selangor pewter to handwoven bags that tell stories of tradition. Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in batik or henna painting, or perhaps, have your fortune told – after all, a little mystique adds fun to the journey. And remember, bargaining is not just welcomed here but encouraged!

• Immerse Yourself in Culture at The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

Explore the 12 galleries brimming with over

10,000 artefacts spanning centuries of Islamic civilisation. Be prepared to be awe-struck at meticulous replicas of iconic mosques and lose yourself in the opulence of the Ottoman-era Damascus Room. Plus, scholars will find solace in the extensive Scholar’s Library, boasting a wealth of Islamic art studies.

• Savour Authentic Flavours at Rebung Restaurant

Your taste buds are in for a royal treat at Rebung Restaurant, a Malay culinary haven curated by the effervescent celebrity chef, Dato’ Chef Ismail. From the tangy delights of Penang laksa to the aromatic allure of nasi kerabu goreng, each dish is a symphony of flavours that will leave you craving for more. And let’s not forget the sweet finale: air batu campur and dodol will have you swooning in gastronomic bliss.

• Get Sun-Kissed at Tioman Island

Seeking solace in nature? Look no further than Tioman Island, a paradisiacal haven in Malaysia teeming with natural wonders. Swim into crystal-clear waters brimming with vibrant coral reefs and exotic marine life, or explore lush rainforests adorned with hidden waterfalls and enchanting caves.

• Experience the Magic of Kampung Baru

For those seeking to venture beyond the confines of the museum, a ‘Magical Kampung Baru Walk‘ awaits. Led by the charismatic Fuad Fahmy Mubarak, a fourth generation Kampung Baru native, these tours offer a glimpse into the heart and soul of traditional Malay life at Kampung Baru, which was founded in 1900 during the heyday of tin mining in colonial Malaysia. Explore the bustling markets, savour authentic Malay delicacies, and marvel at the unique architecture and historical landmarks that bear witness to generations of Malay heritage. With four distinct tours to choose from, there’s something to captivate every wanderer’s heart.

So, with this guide in hand, may your journey through Malaysia promises to be not only safe but also an unforgettable adventure filled with wonders waiting to be discovered!

Malaysia’s Flourishing Appeal as the Mecca for Modest Fashion and Halal Products

As Muslim international arrivals around the world soar, the spotlight has turned toward destinations that cater to the needs of the Muslim community, not just in terms of halal food options and Muslim-friendly accommodations, but also in modest fashion and product offerings — a niche Malaysia embraces with open arms.

Famed for its hospitality and scenic landscapes, Malaysia is a haven for retail therapy as well, particularly in the vibrant Klang Valley where visitors can shop to their hearts’ content for high-quality products that meet the needs of Muslim shoppers. Besides, most of the malls feature halal food courts with dedicated prayer rooms, including dedicated ablution spaces and prayer mats, making the shopping experience much more pleasant.

The following are some of the best Muslim-friendly shopping destinations in Klang Valley with recommendations of family-friendly attractions nearby that are worth exploring:

• Taman Negara National Park, Pahang

Let’s start the list with the arguably most popular option in the country: Taman Negara National Park, which is the 130 million-years-old virgin tropical rainforest with unspoiled flora and fauna. Expect to be blown away by endless adventures ranging from jungletrekking to Bukit Teresek, crossing the world’s longest canopy walkway, rapid shooting along Terengganu River and visiting a Batek aboriginal community. If that’s not enough, you may also engage in 4WD night safari where you’ll go in search for wild nocturnal species.

• Kilim Geoforest Park, Langkawi, Kedah Cruise along Kilim River to take in the exquisite natural wonders of the lush mangrove forests, limestone rock formations, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear lagoons, all part of the Kilim Geoforest Park, considered as Langkawi’s most popular ecotourism spot. Throughout the tour, you get to learn a great deal about the importance of protecting the mangrove and marine ecosystems since they were critical in protecting the island from further devastation when the tragic 2004 tsunami reached Langkawi’s shores. Visitors will also be able to witness a myriad of wildlife here, especially the birds like hornbills, Brahminy kites and giant sea eagles.

• Little Amazon Sungai Berang, Kuala Berang, Terengganu

If you were in Terengganu, remember to explore the state’s very own beautiful Little Amazon in the most fun-filled ways. Several activities here include tubing, rafting, kayaking and cruising along Sungai Berang near Kampung Lebak. The river is classified as class 1, meaning that the river flows slowly, making it ideal for beginners.

• Kubang Badak Mangrove Reserve, Langkawi, Kedah

A little less known sister to Kilim Geoforest Park, the Kubang Badak Mangrove Reserve is another premier ecotourism site in Langkawi, located at the island’s the northeast. The landscape here is different from the former due to its granite, not limestone, rock foundation. The reserve is huge, so the best way to explore it is by boat, which takes visitors to plenty of geologically significant sites such as Pulau Jemuruk with its million-year-old trilobites and fossilised extinct marine arthropods, and the 6,000-year-old Pinang Cave that shelters over 10,000 bats. If you are a history buff, this is also where you could explore century-old Siamese charcoal kiln ruins, believed to belong to the Siamese immigrants that came in the 18th century.

You may book the tour directly with Klook.

• Lubok Kasai, Lubok Antu, Sarawak

Of course, we simply can’t have this list without including at least one place in Borneo. It is after all, the world’s third largest island with unique and diverse ecosystem. One of the best destinations to admire the island’s biodiversity is by joining a tour to Lubok Kasai, deep in the heart of Borneo. Rugged explorers are sure to be delighted by the chance to ride upriver to Nanga Sumpa for two hours by boat, trekking along multiple types of trails through the rainforest, interacting with an Iban community, taking a dip at the Enseluai waterfall, and studying the habitat of orangutans thriving in the wild.

Book the tour with Borneo Adventure; they were responsible for taking care of the late Anthony Bourdain when he toured Sarawak during his last visit. Also, take note that the activities at Lubok Kasai can be strenuous, so plan accordingly.

• Wetland Kampung Linting, Tanjung Surat, Johor

Consider joining a community-based tour at Wetland Kampung Linting organised by Belungkor Adventure, which brings travellers around a rich and pristine tidal mangrove ecosystem, while at the same time dropping by at the nearby fishing villages for travellers to get a taste of the kampung lifestyle. Expect to enjoy kompang and silat performances, besides savouring local dishes. If you’re in luck, you may also witness sea cucumber and horseshoe crab up close! Culminate the tour at Restoran Asam Pedas Tanjung Belungkor that serves up – you guessed it right – the most lip-smacking asam pedas (spicy and sour gravy dish) that make other competing eateries a run for their money.

This tour lasts two hours. For arrangements, contact Tok Amin at +6 010 413 5025.

• Royal Belum State Park, Perak

Being one of the oldest rainforests in the world, this huge park is home to rich species of flora and fauna, including endangered native wildlife such as tigers, sun bears, tapirs and whitehanded gibbons. Some said this is also where travellers can spot all species of hornbills. Moreover, those who are interested in finding the rafflesia can do it here too when this enormous flower is in season. The best way to fully take in the beauty of Royal Belum is by staying on a houseboat, which allows guests to traverse the Temenggor Lake at a relaxing pace while following dayexcursions to various extractions that dot around this state park.

Book the tour with Royal Belum Houseboat & Outdoor Adventure.

Fun fact: Did you know that R.azlanii Rafflesia specie is indigenous to Peninsular Malaysia and named after the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah? It is so significant that its image is emblazoned on the MYR10 note!

So, what are you waiting for? Pack up your boots, your snack and utmost sense of adventure, because these places are set to unleash your own inner explorer!

Take a houseboat ride around Royal Belum Lake for an unforgettable experience.

7 Offensive Table Manners in Different Countries That Travellers Should Know

As a traveller, it is important to be aware of what you should and should not do when visiting new places because different country bears different culture. When it comes to travelling, food is and will always be a big part of your trip, so it is important to learn and adopt the destination’s customs and etiquettes to avoid offending anyone around you!

Here is a list of offensive eating manners from different countries around the world that you can take note before setting foot there.

Images by UNSPLASH

• China – Placing chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice

Never ever rest your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice as this symbolises death, an offering for the deceased. This action portrays “feeding” the dead in which it is traditionally offered to the spirit of a dead person. Crossing your chopsticks on the table or on your bowl is also considered rude for the same reason. It is recommended therefore that you place the chopsticks uncrossed on your bowl or place it on the chopstick rest (if provided) to avoid any offensive chopstick incident.

• Italy – Cutting up your pasta with knife

Eating a plate of pasta can be a challenge and some might think that it is much easier to grab little pieces of cut pasta, rather than rolling the pieces around but in Italy, it is considered one of the most offensive things to do when dining. Do not ever use your knife to cut your pasta. To avoid the awkward bite from having collected too much pasta using your fork, it might be best to twirl the pasta from the edge of the dish rather than the middle.

• Saudi Arabia – Leaving the plate empty after eating

It is considered rude to keep on emptying your plate when you’re being fed at a Saudi Arabian house because to them it means that you are not being fed enough. They will keep on giving you more food if you keep cleaning your plate so it is better to leave a small amount of food on your plate to show that you are full, and they would consider that as a compliment instead.

• Japan – Rubbing wooden chopsticks together

Some people break the wooden chopsticks apart then rub it together to smoothen the texture. While this is a great way to get rid of potential splinters, if you happen to be in a Japanese sushi restaurant, doing this is considered offensive. This action suggests that the restaurant is using low-end chopsticks, so cheap that they are splintery. So, try not to do this during your next trip to Japan and instead charm everyone with your perfect chopstick etiquette.

Fairmont Jaipur: A Majestic Fusion of Heritage and Luxury

Nestled among the Aravalli hills, Fairmont Jaipur draws inspiration from majestic Mughal architecture, inviting guests into a world of understated grandeur from the moment they step through its doors. I was enchanted by its majestic setting, and I felt as though I had stumbled upon a luxurious oasis seamlessly marrying tradition with modern comfort.

But what captivated me were the little details: the intricate decor, the cosy corners, and the genuine warmth of the staff. Each room and suite felt like a nod to Rajasthan’s royal past, with rich fabrics and traditional decor adding elegance to every corner. Whether indulging in sumptuous feasts or enjoying quiet moments by the pool, every experience was a celebration of luxury and authenticity.

Fairmont Jaipur isn’t merely a place to rest your head; it is a destination in its own right. Whether immersing yourself in Jaipur’s vibrant culture or seeking solace from the city’s chaos, this gem of a resort promises an unforgettable stay. So, if you were ready to be swept away by royal charm and contemporary comforts, Fairmont Jaipur awaits you with open arms.

A Welcoming Lobby, Dining Experience, and Swimming Pool

Upon arriving at the front entrance of the hotel, I was greeted by the rhythmic beating of drums by the welcoming staff of the Fairmont Jaipur. It was a grand and festive reception that immediately made me feel special. The part I love the most and will always remember was the shower of flower petals from above. A staff member was scattering rose petals from the top of the building as I gleefully walked over the cascade of petals. This thoughtful and elaborate gesture made me feel honoured like royalty.

After the rousing welcome, we proceeded through the security check. Our bags and belongings were carefully scanned before we could enter the hotel. This additional step inspired confidence. The entire experience, from the grand entrance to the meticulous security, demonstrated the hotel’s dedication to making guests feel both welcome and safe.

Stepping into the lobby, I was greeted by the soothing sound of beautiful music and soothing fragrance. My eyes were immediately drawn to the interior decor, with its dim lighting adding to the romantic ambience. The lobby is elegantly designed, featuring small shops that sell a variety of items, including clothes and decorations like gemstones and more.

The lobby also seamlessly connects to an expansive dining area where unforgettable breakfast and dinner, not just due to the food but also the stunning interior design. Stepping

into the dining area at Fairmont Jaipur felt like entering an epicurean temple. The ambience was a perfect blend of regal charm and contemporary comfort, instantly putting me at ease. As I perused the menu, I was drawn to the signature dishes, which promised a fusion of traditional Indian flavours with modern twists. When the waiter approached, I was indeed taken in by his attentive and gracious demeanour.

The waiter expertly guided me through the menu, making recommendations tailored to my preferences. With each dish that arrived, it was clear that every detail had been carefully crafted to rouse the senses. But what made the experience more memorable was the impeccable service. The waiters treated me with such warmth and care, ensuring that I felt like a valued guest throughout the meal. Their attentiveness made me feel pampered, like royalty dining in my own palace.

While my time at Fairmont Jaipur was limited, I couldn’t resist capturing the serene beauty of the swimming pool area through my lens. Surrounded by wondrous architecture that seamlessly blends traditional Rajasthani elements with modern luxury, the pool exuded a sense of exclusive solitude. Despite not being able to take a dip myself, I found solace in the peaceful atmosphere as I wandered around, snapping photos of the intricately designed arches and the play of light and shadow on the water’s surface. It was a brief moment of relaxation amidst a busy schedule and one that left me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, even without actually diving into the pool.

Chilling by the poolside at Fairmont Jaipur is an experience all guests should indulge

Stay Like a King in The Hotel’s Signature Room I had the incredible opportunity to stay in one of Fairmont Jaipur’s signature rooms that felt like a bedroom fit for a Rajasthani royalty. As soon as I stepped inside, I was greeted by a captivating scent that immediately caught my attention. It had a luxurious aroma, reminiscent of a high-end spa, filling the room with a sense of calm and indulgence. The fragrance was enchanting and added an extra layer of opulence to the already sumptuous surroundings.

The room itself is a masterpiece of design, with intricate details and elegant furnishings that exude sophistication and comfort. Every element, from the plush bedding to the ornate decorations, was thoughtfully curated to create a regal feel. I couldn’t help but be impressed by the meticulous attention to detail that turns the room grand and inviting. Staying in this exquisite room for the next three days and two nights was truly exhilarating.

Equipped with a variety of luxurious amenities, the feature that captivated me the most and will remain etched in my memory is the bathroom! Yes, the bathroom is incredibly capacious, as large as the bedroom itself. As soon as I opened the bathroom door, the first thing that caught my eye was the bathtub filled with water and red rose petals, as if inviting me to soak after a long day outside. The bathtub is centrally located, flanked by the shower room and the toilet.

Oh, let me tell you about the bathtub at Fairmont Jaipur –it’s like stepping into a dream. Picture this: as you sink into

the warm water, all your worries literally fade away. And the best part? I could bring my iPad along and catch up on my favourite Netflix shows. It was pure relaxation, surrounded by gorgeous decor with soft candlelight flickering around me. Each episode I watched made the experience even better, like a little slice of heaven right in the tub. It was the perfect escape from reality, something I wished could last forever.

The bathroom is not just the place to clean up but a sensual sanctuary. The sink area is well-equipped with all the necessary amenities for personal care, ensuring every need is met with the utmost convenience, and the most enjoyable feature is the large mirror with bright lights, perfect for checking my outfit of the day and enhancing the beauty of the bathroom even more.

Besides the comfortable room that I fell in love with, the guest service also needs to be highlighted. Housekeeping cleans my room twice a day, ensuring that I always return to a pristine and welcoming space. In my case, after spending the entire day exploring the vibrant city of Jaipur from morning until evening, I hadn’t even had the chance to lie down in the freshly made bed when housekeeping arrived to ask if I needed any additional service to tidy up the room. This level of attention to detail and commitment to guest satisfaction impressed me. The staff members here are exceptionally kind and friendly, always ready with a smile and eager to assist with any request. Their warm hospitality and professionalism significantly enhanced my stay, making me feel genuinely valued.

In this spread, clockwise from the previous page, top: The relaxed hangout corner in my luxurious room allows me to sit, read and even daydream; Soaking in a tub of water filled with rose petals is an absolute body rejuvenator; Stepping into my Fairmont Jaipur signature room felt like waltzing into a private quarter of a Rajasthani royalty.

How I Feel After Experiencing Fairmont Jaipur

Leaving Fairmont Jaipur was bittersweet. It felt like saying goodbye to a dear friend after an unforgettable visit. From the moment I stepped in, I was wrapped in quintessential luxury that made me feel right at home. Whether it was savouring delicious meals or enjoying some quiet time in the bathtub, every moment was simply delightful.

What struck me most was the hotel’s attention to detail. Everywhere I looked, there was something beautiful to cherish, from the amazing architecture to the friendly smiles of the staff. Fairmont Jaipur isn’t just a place to stay; it is an irresistible refuge from the chaos of everyday life.

As I packed my bags, I couldn’t help but hope for another chance to visit. Fairmont Jaipur had left a lasting impression on me, and I knew that another stay would be just as wonderful. It was more than a hotel; it was a retreat where every moment felt like a cradling Rajasthani embrace…

Nestled in Tanah Rata amidst stunning tea plantations, Stellar GoldenHill Cameron is ideal for travellers seeking serenity and adventure.

The property offers different types of accommodations: Hexagon Tent, Luxe Tent, Cottage Tent, Starlux Dome, Nest Caravan, and Cozy Caravan. Gaya Travel suggests that travellers should opt for the Cozy Caravan or the Nest Caravan since both types of accommodations offer more personal space. However, you might still feel comfortable if you had to stay in one of the tents, particularly the smallest category called the Hexagon Tent because all accommodations are at least provided with amenities like towels, comforters, floor fan, lamp, titbits, a glass bottle of water, mugs, storage rack, and electric sockets – the higher the category, the more the amenities. Guests who stay in the tents need to use shared bathroom and toilet. Hair dryer is available upon request.

Buffet breakfast is provided daily for guests staying at Caravan, Dome, and Glamping accommodations. The site where guests have their breakfast –which is adjacent to the row of Cozy Caravan accommodations – is turned into an outdoor cinema at night, allowing guests to enjoy watching a family-friendly movie under the stars, weather permitting. Guests can also book teatime and barbecue dining either at their accommodations or under the quaint A-shaped tents near the property’s reception counter. Larger groups can make arrangements with the Stellar GoldenHill Cameron personnel to dine at the Bohemianinspired Stellar Café instead.

Situated 2.6 kilometres from the BOH Tea Centre in Sungai Palas, Cameron Highlands, the seven-room A’Moss Farmstay features a hillside terrace with views of the surrounding garden and mountain, beckoning active guests to go hiking and explore the adjacent terrains.

For a different stay experience, guests should opt for the Camper Trailer that comes with an outdoor bathtub or the eye-catching Glass Cabin with a queen-sized bed that can move automatically from inside the room to the balcony outside.

By August 2024, the property would have added another type of accommodation: the Mirror Glass Pyramid. Guests are sure to be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the property’s one-of-a-kind accommodations when staying here. But if Gaya Travel team members were to pick our favourites, it must be the Glass Cabin and the Camper Trailer.

Guests of this property are provided with free Wi-Fi and free private parking. Those who might have trouble negotiating the narrow road leading towards the property should arrange with the A’Moss Farmstay personnel to pick them up using a four-wheel drive.

WELL-APPOINTED ACCOMMODATIONS

Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa’s exquisite deluxe rooms and villas capture spectacular day and night views of the sea in the most tranquil setting. The resort’s largest accommodation is the 120 metres squared Royal Villa, one of the largest suites in Perhentian with a private pool. The designs are intentionally kept simple and clean to blend in with the natural environment with minimum disruption.

When walking around the resort, guests couldn’t help but realise that Marriott is all about streamlined efficiency accentuated by local identity. Natural elements such as tree trunks or tree saplings are used for the columns and roof or facade screens, applied in various ways, working together to create a serene and welcoming atmosphere. The interior decor, though contemporary, reflects the traditional woven craft of songket with intricate design motifs, which is native to the Peninsular Malaysia East Coast region, generating a strong visual contrast against rustic feature walls.

Gaya Travel team sees that the resort embodies Marriott’s current brand ethos, which aims to redefine what luxury means, which is not anymore about gild, bling, ornate features, marble tiles, shimmer, and glitter, but more on how lightly we tread the earth and how much positive impact could the brand have on the planet and people. Pomp, ostentation, and excess now give way to low-key, down-toearth, pragmatic, and understated, timeless style, which are the hallmarks of sustainability.

The building designs are intended to create a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors. Most of the resort’s interiors are blessed with high ceilings to generously let in natural light and the view of greenery during the daytime.

The guestrooms are arranged specifically to follow the natural contour of the existing topography to minimise disturbance to the lay of the land and are carefully positioned and angled to ensure unobstructive views and privacy. Each room comes with a balcony, and the majority of the guestrooms either have full or partial sea view.

Since the property faces west, Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa is a fantastic spot to witness sunsets. At specific times of the year, when the sky is clear, guests could see the sunset and the moon simultaneously, plus the twinkling stars at night due to lesser light pollution on Perhentian island.

The rooms are also equipped with two-screened layered roller shades: the outer one for full block-out while the inner one is opaque so that guests can control the degree of natural light entering the room from the large framed singular window.

When guests step into the bathroom, they can find the revitalising ‘This Works’ toiletry products conveniently mounted on the wall next to the shower, close to the huge and deep bathtub to soak out stress, and the toilet that is kitted out with the futuristic Toto washlet system.

DINING OPTIONS

Dining at Marriott Resort Perhentian is a culinary adventure. Dapur, which means ‘kitchen’ in Malay, is the resort’s all-day dining outlet serving local and international favourites, suited to everyone’s palate and preferences. Among the must-try dishes are the local favourites Nasi Kerabu and Nyonya Laksa.

Specialty restaurant Sekoci, located by the Lap Pool, is a poolside dining experience with an alfresco concept, serving a delicious range of options, particularly indulgent international cuisine for lunch, and grilled seafood delights for dinner.

Meanwhile, Greatroom and outdoor terraces, which face the Family Pool, are open for relishing expertly crafted cocktails and local delicacies. This is where guests can imbibe fantastic aperitifs or digestifs; be sure to try Greatroom’s uplifting signature drink called Earl Grey Teh Tarik. As the drinks are being prepared, guests can feast their eyes on the unique collection of metal batik stamps mounted on the wall above the bar.

THINGS TO DO AT THE RESORT

To get their bearings right and be immersed in local culture, guests are encouraged to explore the rest of Perhentian Kecil, including the adjacent Perhentian Besar, so that they understand Perhentian.

If guests didn’t feel like venturing far from the resort, they can instead access the almost secluded Tranquillity Beach to frolic on the sand or dip in the sea by going down the staircase that begins from the Tranquil Terrace. However, guests should be mindful that Tranquillity Beach is outside of the resort’s grounds and is actually a public area, only made accessible using the steps constructed by the resort. So do take precautions when exploring the beach.

The resort holds nature walks too for guests to appreciate the flora and fauna found within the resort’s grounds, extending all the way to the jetty to spot various kinds of marine life that are visible through the crystal-clear waters.

By the same token, Penyu Club – the resort’s children and teens club – is a hub of fun, tailored for young guests aged between three to 17 years, further elevating family escapes with leisure and educational activities that delve into the richness of local culture, products and marine life.

Another facility at the resort is the Beautiful Terengganu Arts, Crafts & Cultural Centre, where guests can discover more about the timeless beauty of Terengganu’s traditional arts and crafts through workshops, demonstrations, and activities.

Guests who wish to maintain their workout routines during their travels should head to the 24-hour fully equipped Fitness Centre, with the Yoga Deck on its roof for guests to sweat it out in the open and surrounded by captivating views. Guests can cool themselves afterwards by getting into any of the three outdoor pools and jacuzzi, all filled with dechlorinated water for an environmentally conscious and refreshing experience.

The Qi Forest Spa & Wellness is perfect for guests wishing to pamper themselves and unwind by undergoing various spa treatments, including the Traditional Malay Massage and Traditional Floral Bath Ritual (Mandi Bunga). This hub of rejuvenation vaunts nine treatment rooms with a view of the forest: six single rooms, two couple’s rooms, and one hair spa. Guests are recommended to try the 90-minute Qi Forest Signature Massage, which is the spa’s signature treatment.

DIVING HUB OF PERHENTIAN

With direct beach access, exploring the beauty of Perhentian’s underwater begins at the outstanding YBD Dive Centre – the most complete diving school in South East Asia – that is attached to Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa, a boon for all experienced and budding divers.

YBD Dive Centre possesses state-of-the-art facilities for Scuba Diving, Mermaid, Freediving Certification Courses, and Scuba Divers of all levels, including an educational centre called the YBD Coral Discovery Centre, an initiative by iKHASAS, for children to learn intimately about corals to understand their significance and contribution to the fragile marine ecosystem. It also serves as a hub for research, education, and conservation through educational activities to increase understanding of these keystone species, apart from playing a key role in the scuba divers’ certification programme at YBD Dive Centre.

Good to know:

Supported by Sultanah Terengganu, Her Royal Highness Sultanah Nur Zahirah, the YBD Coral Discovery Centre has allocated around 50 acres to create the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Coral Sanctuary. Extending from the Marriott Resort Perhentian’s house reef to Turtle Beach on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, the sanctuary showcases the centre’s dedication to reef preservation.

As mentioned earlier, YBD Diving Centre might just be the best diving centre in Perhentian since it has a worldclass compressor room for filling up the tanks with air and enriched air (Nitrox). Nitrox gas is better for the body during diving because divers are exposed to less nitrogen; the gas reduces exhaustion too. Divers need to be Enriched Air (Nitrox)-certified before using Nitrox tanks, hence Nitrox course is offered in-house as well.

CONCLUSION

Being the first five-star international chain to open on Perhentian island, Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa –ranging from international standard accommodations and facilities to an excellent diving centre, all situated on one of the most beautiful islands in the world – sets a new benchmark for luxury and elegance in the Peninsular Malaysia East Coast region, turning it into an indisputable game-changer. To experience Perhentian like no other, do yourself a great favour by booking a room at the resort now before it gets ever more popular…

Bringing exciting lyf to Kuala Lumpur

lyf (pronounced “life”) is an experience-led social living concept – introduced and designed by the The Ascott Limited – for digital nomads, technopreneurs, creatives, and self-starters seeking to embrace freedom within a vibrant and exciting environment. Interestingly, the name lyf is an acronym, derived from each of the first letters of the phrase ‘live your freedom’.

The first lyf property to open in Malaysia is lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur, which has been operational since mid-2023. A social lifestyle hotel catering to modern travellers, the property offers a unique experience of community in the city, particularly around the vicinity of Jalan Raja Chulan. When staying at the property, Gaya Travel team feels that the ‘lyf ’ brand encourages its guests to simply be themselves, be casual, relaxed and encourages opportunities to forge new connections with other guests.

Additionally, the brand comes across as vibrant, affordable, straightforward, nothing over-the-top or complicated, expressed through social spaces and furnishings that are functional, practical, easy to maintain, lightweight yet durable and lasting. Though lyf ’s main target age group is 20 to 40 years old, including those who are young at heart and have zest for life, the property welcomes everybody from all walks of life based on Gaya Travel team’s interaction with the staff, who are welcoming and accommodating to any of the guests’ needs.

STRATEGIC LOCATION

lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur is strategically located, in proximity to Telekom Museum and Maybank Tower, including nearby offices where its employees eagerly patronise lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur’s food and beverage outlets like SLOAFT CAFÉ by JWC at level 1 for coffee and CHEF SHAN 1975 on Level 12 for its hearty locallyinspired fare.

It is also a few minutes’ walk to the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur, the Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque (popularly known as simply Masjid Jamek), next to the Masjid Jamek light rapid transit (LRT) station that connects travellers to various parts of Kuala Lumpur (KL) and beyond via public transportation.

Petaling Street and Central Market are some notable attractions that guests of the hotel can explore, not forgetting the KL Forest Eco Park at the foot of the iconic KL Tower, where travellers can ascend to take in the 360-degree view of the city.

CLEVER, SPACE-SAVING ACCOMMODATIONS

The rooms are designated from level 2 up to level 11 of the property. Each room is embellished with a colourful feature wall that enlivens the space and is furnished with lightweight and space-saving fittings.

The room’s flooring is laminated for easy and fast cleaning. The bed is firm, offering good ergonomic support when sleeping. Underneath the bed is extra space for guests to place their belongings to avoid clutter. The exposed clothing rack allows for easy hanging and access to clothes. For added security, guests can store their valuables in the safe deposit box provided in-room. Hair dryer is available too.

The television set in the rooms at lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur has a screen mirroring feature that can connect to guests’ smartphone so that they can continue catching up on their favourite shows via streaming services like Netflix or Disney Plus while travelling. Speaking of connectivity, all guests are provided with wireless internet access as well.

Eco friendly liquid shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel are stored within the wall-mounted dispensers to reduce waste, while the bathroom floor and walls are cladded with large, pastel tiles for efficient maintenance. lyf focuses on sustainability and each guest can help themselves to purified

drinking water at the shared pantry on every floor that comes together with a sink, microwave oven, and disposable hand towels. Guests should take note that some rooms at lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur – lyf Style, for example – are windowless, which is explicitly stated on the hotel’s website. If you are a person who might feel claustrophobic when unable to see outside, be sure to book a room with a window.

The room where Gaya Travel team members stayed is an All Together (two-bedroom) unit, likened to a quaint and homely apartment, able to accommodate up to four persons. Encompassing 41 metres squared, this room is one of the largest accommodation units in the property. On the same note, the largest room category is the All Together (fourbedroom) duplex that is 52 metres squared and able to fit up to eight persons. Our All Together (two-bedroom) has segregated shower and toilet areas, thus cutting down guests’ waiting time to use those facilities in case they are occupied by their travelling companions (do take note that the separation of showering and toilet areas is not available for other room categories).

We admire how the All Together (two-bedroom) is laid out and furnished, especially the en-suite kitchenette that offers a great idea of how to save space when designing our own pied-a-terre. One point worth noting is that the hotel has no

parking space of its own. Guests are therefore encouraged to use public transport, especially ride-hailing services, instead of using their own vehicles.

DINING OPTIONS

Many travellers appreciate the value-for-money aspect of lyf Chinatown, as their stay includes a daily breakfast set at SLOAFT CAFE on the ground floor, operated by JWC Global, a reputable food and beverage company known for its cafés, bars, and roastery establishments across Malaysia. The café operates daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., ensuring high-quality food and drinks for guests’ enjoyment.

Other options besides CHEF SHAN 1975 on level 12 are the hip Kafe Kleptokrat and Timothy Café, which are only five minutes’ walk away and serve novel dishes, further enriching guests’ dining experience in Kuala Lumpur. By the way, guests of lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur can enjoy discounts when dining at those establishments and many more though its #lyfperks benefits.

SOCIALISE, THE LYF WAY…

lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur’s level 12 is where most of the action in the property takes place, consisting of co-working cum lounge space called CONNECT; CHEF SHAN 1975 restaurant where guests can order comfort food while working or socialising; the social kitchen called BOND that is fully equipped with the necessary crockery, utensils, refrigerator, and microwave oven for guests to utilise when cooking their own food; laundrette named WASH & HANG for guests to wash, dry, and iron their clothes (they need to purchase tokens from the reception desk at the lobby beforehand to work those machines); the compact social gym called BURN to sweat it out after a long day of working or eating (this is Kuala Lumpur, after all); and a smart, well-connected, meeting room known as COLLAB for guests to hold meetings or discussions, which needs to be booked at the SAY HI, the moniker for front reception.

Level 12 even has an outside balcony space dubbed HANGOUT, where guests can overlook Jalan Raja Chulan and the surroundings while gazing at the KL Tower in the distance. Just a reminder: this balcony, as well as the rest of the property, is declared as non-smoking, therefore smokers could only puff away at the designated smoking area: the seating area next to lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur’s entrance at Level 1.

If you were curious about what’s on level 13, this is where you find COOKOUT, essentially the property’s rooftop and open-air barbecue space, including a Muslim prayer room.

CONCLUSION

The youthful and modern travellers seeking contemporary and stylish value-for-money accommodation will never go wrong when choosing to stay at lyf Chinatown Kuala Lumpur. Living up to its promise, the property affords guests access to smart experience-led social living spaces, social areas, and exposure to Malaysian culture and arts when they participate in the range of events held at the property, including experiencing Kuala Lumpur’s food scene and key attractions so that guests can easily live their freedom…

Singapore’s Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Relaunches After SGD40 Million Renovation

The Gaya Traveller team was recently invited by the five-star Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel for a two-night staycation to experience the hotel’s renewed focus on wellness and sustainability brand of hospitality.

This 30-storey hotel houses 573 guest rooms; 33 versatile meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) spaces; three food outlets; swimming pool; and tennis court, along with the necessary 24-hour gym.

General Manager Mr. Andrew Tan took us on a tour of the hotel, which is conveniently located on the city fringe with an enviable riverfront view, offering a respite for even the weariest travellers.

“Over a quarter of a century, we have seen the city flourish into a premium destination where business deals are struck, and bucket-list holidays are had. We’ve invested deeply into taking our property up a notch, elevating our programmes, services, and spaces to cater to our luxury guests’ changing demands. Our focus on holistic wellness and sustainability will be executed in collaboration

with leading Singaporean personalities and brands, where together we will offer a truly worldclass, made-in-Singapore experience,” he stated.

Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel has integrated sustainability as a core value across the entire hotel ecosystem as part of the Singapore Hotel Sustainability Roadmap. Launched in March 2022 by Singapore Hotel Association and the Singapore Tourism Board, the sustainability roadmap initiative aims to drive industry-wide adoption of green practices in hotels and promote Singapore as a sustainable destination.

We especially love its location: Havelock MRT station is just across the street from the front entrance (Orchard Road is just 2 stops away), and Robertson Quay is just at the back of the hotel.

573 SMART GUESTROOMS

Upon entering our room, we were pleasantly surprised by its generous space, and its full-length windows afford us the beautiful view of the river, including the iconic Marina Bay Sands!

The air-conditioner, lights, and smart TV switch on automatically as soon as guest enters the room. The hotel has replaced the conventional plastic key cards with biodegradable bamboo ones. Instead of the conventional energy saving card slots, motion sensors are used to determine real-time guest presence.

Setting an example for sustainable practices within the hospitality sector, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel has introduced an in-room water filtration system in its guestrooms. This feature guarantees purified drinking water to guests, and reduces single-use plastic waste generated from traditional bottled water consumption by 20%.

The introduction of smart room control thermostats allow guests to effortlessly regulate room temperatures according to their preferences, leading to energy savings up to 17%. This not only ensures a comfortable stay for guests but also

promotes responsible energy consumption.

Each guestrooms also offers wireless bedside charging technology , providing guests with a seamless charging experience for their electronic devices without cumbersome cables. High-definition smart TVs allow guests to stream their favourite movies directly from their smartphones, reducing the need for additional devices and contributing to a more sustainable entertainment.

Wi-fi is complimentary for guests. To ensure excellent speed and connection, each room has its own dedicated router, which is able to support up to 20 devices at one time.

For further touch of luxury, Christian Lacroix bath amenities are provided in mounted pump bottles in line with the hotel’s mission to reduce plastic waste.

Our room came with Executive Club Lounge access. Located on the 29th floor, the lounge offers the breathtaking vistas of Singapore’s iconic cityscape. It is an oasis for guests seeking some quiet time while enjoying impeccable service by the lounge hosts. The club is open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily and offers breakfast, afternoon snacks, and evening cocktails.

33 FUNCTION ROOMS

Being one of the leading MICE hotels in Singapore, Grand Copthorne Waterfront really knows the importance of providing the best facilities and comfort for this market segment.

Spanning over 6,200 metres squared across three floors, the conference spaces are luxuriously carpeted with modern LED lighting, and benefit from an abundance of natural sunlight through large windows. Eco-conscious practices are evident throughout with the use of recyclable and biodegradable stationery, filtered drinking water replacing plastic bottles, and a linen-less table set up.

Each function room is equipped with cutting edge technology, including wireless video signal transmission, laser projectors, and 2K to 4K high-resolution light-emitting diode (LED) video walls for seamless and successful events. The pilarless 850 metres squared Grand Ballroom features two giant LED screens on two walls that can be divided into smaller screens and junior ballrooms for various event sizes.

There is even an in-house MUIS (Singapore Islamic authority body) halal-certified kitchen to cater to Muslim event attendees’ special dietary requirements.

3 DINING OUTLETS

• Food Capital

A spacious all-day dining and buffet restaurant overlooking the Robertson Quay / Singapore River presents diners an array of indulgent delights with the main island counter; with the seafood on ice section as the highlight. Seafood lovers like us definitely relished the bottomless succulent snow crab legs, oysters, scallops, lobsters, prawns, and clams, all to be enjoyed with an array of tasty dipping sauces. Have fun making your way around the buffet spread stations and pick whatever you fancy. Besides seafood, the buffet also serves Japanese, local delights, western roasts, and desserts alongside a big selection of tea and coffee. Everything was top-notch.

The restaurant offers thematic buffets throughout the year. We had the chance to enjoy their latest offering; the lavish Sunday Epicure Brunch that first served beginning 3 March 2024. The Sunday brunch offers a mega spread that stretches across all of the hotel’s three F&B outlets: Food Capital, SanSara, and Riverside Terrace, with culinary choices ranging from East to West.

With 15 live stations, diners can expect the food to always

be fresh for the ultimate gastronomic journey. Indulge with Food Capital’s hearty eastern and western offerings, SanSara’s exquisite Northern Indian cuisine, and Riverside Terrace’s tantalising grilled specialties.

• SanSara

SanSara offers diners authentic Northern Indian cuisine in a high-end setting. Diners can observe the chefs preparing the exquisite dishes in full view of their open concept kitchen. The cosy atmosphere of the restaurant makes it the perfect venue for an intimate lunch or dinner with your loved ones.

Share good converstations as you indulge in their lip smacking briyani, grilled meats, roti, curries and lassis!

• Riverside Terrace

Riverside Terrace is a great place to unwind with friends after a hectic work week because the ambiance is awesome in the evenings. This all-day alfresco restaurant-bar has direct connection to the updated Lobby Lounge, offering guests an indoor-outdoor dining experience amidst relaxing riverside views. The restaurant showcases a refreshed craft cocktail and mocktail menu, alongside comfort classics like surf & turf platters, freshly made pizzas and pastas, as well as local delights. The hotel is teeming up with Free Spirit, Singapore’s biggest alcoholfree bottle shop to cater to patrons who prefer the no/low alcohol way of life.

HOLISTIC WELLNESS AT GRAND COPTHORNE WATERFRONT

Since we are currently living in a fast-paced and hectic era, nurturing a balanced mind, body and spirit can be quite a challenge. More and more people are becoming aware about the importance of self care and mindful living. As part of its rejuvenation, the hotel will introduce a host of strategic partnerships that promote holistic wellbeing.

We had two great yoga sessions with movement and mindfulness coach, Brandon Chong. Brandon’s mantra is centred around mindfulness and adopting wellness as a way of life. We also enjoyed the morning and evening strolls by the Robertson Quay after our hearty breakfast and dinner. Truly, our stay at the hotel took us by surprise. We certainly did not expect to find a relaxing getaway in the Lion City, and we are sure that you will be pleasantly surprised too and you stay in this world-class hotel!
