Na twee Corona edities gaan we eindelijk weer knallen, en gaan dat doen als nooit tevoren. We kunnen niet wachten om onze trots weer openlijk en vrij van elke beperking te kunnen tonen en gaan de stad 9 dagen laten zien dat ook wij er nog zijn en dat er nog steeds rekening gehouden moet worden met ons.

Het wordt een bijzonder jaar met meerdere jubileum edities; 25ste Canal Parade, 10de Pride Walk, 5de Pride Park en we gaan ook alweer voor de 5e keer naar Pride at the Beach.
We gaan dus eindelijk weer naar buiten, maar Corona heeft ons sterker gemaakt dan ooit. De letters die in het verleden door de overheid alleen maar aan elkaar geplakt zijn om via één aanspreekpunt in contact te staan met al die groepen die afwijken van de cisgender heteronormativiteit, zijn de crisis uitgekomen als een echte community, een familie met meer oog en begrip voor elkaar. De PrideTV live uitzendingen vanuit de OBA en het Student Hotel werden massaal bekeken en daarmee hebben we een inkijkje gekregen in elkaars wereld en kwamen de letters tot leven. De verschillen tussen de letters lijken nu kleiner en de overeenkomsten groter.
Dit jaar gaan we proberen die verschillen nog kleiner te maken en focussen we ons voor het eerst in 25 jaar niet op de seksuele diversiteit maar op de genderdiversiteit. Met het thema ‘My Gender, My Pride’ willen we iedereen bekendmaken met het idee dat gender niet binair is en vragen om naar zichzelf te kijken. Hoe star hou jij vast Lucien met ambassadeurs 2022
MY GENDER, MY PRIDE
After two COVID-19 years, we are finally putting out all the stops again! We can’t wait to show our pride openly and free of any restrictions again. For 9 consecutive days, we will show the city of Amsterdam that we are still here, and that we will and shall be taken into account. The 2022 edition will be a special one with several anniversary editions; the 25th Canal Parade, from the crisis as a real community, a family with a better understanding of and for one another. The PrideTV live broadcasts from the OBA public library and the Student Hotel were watched in large numbers, giving us an insight into each other’s world. Thus, the LGBTQI letters of the alphabet came to life. The differences between the letters now appear smaller and the similarities greater. This year, we will try to make those differences even smaller, and for the first time in 25 years we will not focus on sexual diversity but on gender diversity. With the ‘My Gender, My Pride’ theme, we want to introduce everyone to the idea that gender is not binary and ask everyone to take another look at themselves. How rigidly do you hold on to concepts such as masculinity and femininity and to what extent does that determine the things you do or don’t do? Did you as a man embrace your feminine

We are finally ‘coming out’ in large numbers again. COVID has made us stronger than ever. The letters that in the past were only put together by the government to be in contact with all those groups that deviate from cisgender heteronormativity through a single point of contact, have emerged

Naast 7 cisgender ambassadeurs die zich (elk om eigen reden en manier) sterk verbonden voelen met het thema, hebben we 3 transpersonen (een transman, een transvrouw en een trans nonbinair) gevraagd rolmodel te willen zijn en als ambassadeur hun verhaal te vertellen. In de vorige editie van de GayNews hebben we vier

van hen gepresenteerd en in deze editie zijn dat er nog eens zes. Niet eerder hebben we zo’n grote en diverse groep bij elkaar gekregen en het was mooi om te zien dat er bij hun eerste ontmoeting meteen een warme en zorgzame sfeer hing. Een groepsdynamiek die we graag in de community terug zouden zien. Met respect voor elkaars gender en seksuele geaardheid en de openheid om van elkaars verhaal te willen leren.
We gaan proberen onze community, en hopelijk ook ver daarbuiten, op te voeden voor wat betreft pronouns gebruik. Iets wat bij de jongere generaties geen issue is, blijkt bij de oudere garde toch een probleem op te leveren. Onwetendheid maakt dat mensen fouten maken en onbedoeld misgenderen (een zij met hem aanwijzen of andersom en over een non-binair, binair spreken) dat is pijnlijk maar te vergeven. Doe je het opzettelijk, dan moet je bij jezelf te rade gaan hoe het voelt als men jou een flikker, nicht of pot noemt. Om het gebruik van pronounces te vergemakkelijken hebben we een VR filter laten maken die je op onze Instagram account vindt, zodat je zelf kunt aangeven welke pronouns bij jou hoort. Ik zou iedereen willen vragen die te gebruiken. We doen de moeite om iemand zijn/haar/diens naam te onthouden, waarom dan niet zijn/

Never before have we gathered such a large and diverse group, and it was wonderful to see the atmosphere in the group was a warm and caring one when it first met. It is a group dynamic that we would like to see reflected in the community, with a mutual respect for each other’s gender and sexual orientation, and an openness to want to learn from each other. country. Something that is not an issue for the younger generations turns out to be a problem for the older one. Ignorance makes people make mistakes, inadvertently using the incorrect pronoun, which is painful but forgivable.
If you’re doing it intentionally, you’ll have to ask yourself what it feels like to be called a poofter or a bull dyke, for instance. To facilitate the use of correct pronouns, we have commissioned a VR filter you can find on our Instagram account, in order for you to indicate which pronouns fits you. I call on each and every one to use it. We make the effort to remember someone’s name, why not his/her/their pronouns. Generation Z has already proven that it shouldn’t be a problem. Soon, the streets will be full of thousands of posters of our Pride ambassadors who have already set a good example. The credit for making the community more

haar/diens pronouns. Generatie Z heeft al bewezen dat het geen probleem hoeft te zijn en maken zich dit gebruik makkelijk eigen. Het straatbeeld tijdens Pride zal straks bepaald worden door duizenden posters van onze Pride ambassadeurs die alvast het goede voorbeeld geven.
De credits voor een hechtere community building tijdens Corona gaan niet alleen naar Pride TV want ook het Pride Hotel, waar alle letters en kleuren van de regenboogfamilie elkaar tegen kwamen, heeft daaraan bijgedragen. Beide zijn elementen die we dan ook graag als erfenis overhouden aan die tijd. The Student Hotel aan de Wibautstraat zal vanaf 30 juli voor de tweede keer door ons worden overgenomen en omgetoverd tot het Pride Hotel. Tussen 12:00 en 20:00 uur kun je daar naar binnen wandelen en je onderdompelen in een bad van regenboog activiteiten. In alle ruimtes op de begane grond vindt er iets plaats; workshops, seminars, panel
talks, conferenties, spoken word, optredens, boeklezingen, foto exposities, filmvertoningen, pride university en natuurlijk kun je ook gewoon gezellig op het terras in de zon van een heerlijke cocktail genieten of een hapje eten. Dit jaar kunnen we ook lekker dansen en doen dat met de ouderen overdag tijdens het Roze Danspaleis en met de jongeren tot in de late uurtjes met het studenten bal.
De afgelopen twee jaar hebben we vanwege het ontbreken van andere mogelijkheden ons gefocust op PrideTV en daarmee in 9 dagen tijd bijna 2 miljoen mensen bereikt. Van de 24 uur die we per dag uitzonden was dat een kwart live. Dat gaat ons dit jaar niet lukken, maar naast dat wij daar geen geld en personeel voor hebben, is er waarschijnlijk ook niet zoveel behoeft aan. We gaan dit jaar met een vernieuwde talkshow vanuit het hart van het Pride Hotel, live uitzenden op weekdagen van

Anyone can take a seat in the audience and watch the broadcasts. Bring a drink and find a seat in the auditorium. In addition to these live broadcasts from the Pride Hotel, we will also broadcast live during the PrideWalk and Pride Park on Saturday 30 July, the Boat Parade on August 6, as well as the closing concert on Dam Square on August 7.
17:00 - 19:00 uur. Bijzondere (inter) nationale gasten zullen aanschuiven en over allerhande onderwerpen praten die onze community interesseren en aangaan. Het wordt een show met een lach en een traan en elke uur zullen we een liveoptreden hebben. Iedereen kan plaats nemen in het publiek en de uitzendingen bijwonen. Neem een drankje mee en zoek een zitplaatsje in het auditorium. Naast deze live uitzendingen vanuit het Pride Hotel zullen we live uitzenden op; zaterdag 30 juli PrideWalk en Pride Park, zaterdag 6 augustus Botenparade en zondag 7 augustus slotconcert op de Dam.
De Pride Walk zal dit jaar anders van opzet zijn. Na de ‘Reclaim Our Pride’ actie van vorig jaar hebben we de betrokken partijen gevraagd zelf de handschoen op te pakken en de organisatie voor hun rekening te nemen. Aangezien kosteloos demonstreren in Amsterdam niet mogelijk is (in ieder geval niet als het voor de Pride is) en de kosten voor beveiliging en verkeersregelaars door deze partijen niet op te hoesten zijn, nemen we wel die 20.000 euro kosten voor onze rekening en stellen daarmee een zichtbare route dwars door het centrum veilig.

Zoals het idee er nu ligt zal men tussen 11:00-12:00 uur op de Dam verzamelen en via Rokin, Vijzelstraat, Weteringschans, Museumstraat, Johan Vermeerstraat, Honthorsstraat, Jan Luijkenstraat, Hobbemastraat, naar het Vondelpark lopen. De vlaggen van de 71 landen waar homoseksualiteit nog in het wetboek van strafrecht staat, zullen vanwege de perikelen in 2021 niet meer meelopen met de PrideWalk maar stichting Zero Flags Project heeft ons beloofd in plaats daarvan met een verrassing te komen. Ik ben benieuwd.
Nieuw dit jaar is de Asian Pride en daarmee wordt een droom van Pete Wu, Pride ambassadeur 2021, werkelijkheid. Als ambassadeur gaf hij aan dat hij als jonge Aziatische gay representatie miste en dat hem dat gesterkt zou hebben. We hebben daarnaar geluisterd en samen met Cinemasia en YIP.com gezorgd voor een complete programmering gericht op de Aziatische community. Met in het Pride Park een community picknick, in het Pride Hotel een workshop, foto expositie en filmvertoning. Op woensdag staat de openlucht bioscoop op het Mercatorplein in het teken van Asian Pride en tijdens de Canal Parade varen ze met een eigen boot mee. Mooi om te zien hoe een vriendschap die teruggaat naar mijn studententijd nu tot zoiets bijzonders heeft kunnen leiden. Dankjewel Long Yip! Het Pride Team 2022
Ook nieuw ten opzichte van 2019 is bijna het gehele team waarmee we Pride 2022 aanvliegen. Op kantoor hebben we ondersteuning gekregen van BeyonG Veldkamp, een super lief persoon en een kanjer van een bruggenbouwer. In 2017 ontving zij uit handen van de minister van OCW de Jos Brink innovatie prijs en kreeg in 2019 van het COC een Bob Angelo ‘Ster van de Toekomst’ uitgereikt. Ook Lars Brunnhoff is een nieuw

gezicht op kantoor maar heeft in het verleden als vrijwilligers al veel voor onze Pride gedaan. Voor het bestuur geldt dat zij compleet nieuw is en na twee jaar eindelijk een reguliere Pride en een botenparade gaat meemaken.
In aanloop naar de 25ste editie van de botenparade, die door Corona twee keer vooruitgeschoven is, heeft de gemeente nieuw Pride beleid geschreven. Na eerst meerdere jaren en daarna verschillende maanden vertraging te hebben opgelopen, zouden wij begin mei dan eindelijk de definitieve versie ontvangen. Bij het ter drukken gaan van deze column op 1 juli was het echter nog steeds niet binnen. Terwijl wij nu compleet in de uitvoeringsmodus voor deze Pride zitten hebben we dus nog geen idee wat er boven ons hoofd hangt en of er nog een toekomst is voor ons na deze editie. Misschien maar beter ook. Happy Pride!!

We heard him! In collaboration with Cinemasia and YIP.com we have ensured that here will be a full programme aimed at the Asian community. With a community picnic in the Pride Park, and a workshop, a photo exhibition and a film screening in the Pride Hotel. On Wednesdays, the open-air cinema on Mercatorplein is all about Asian Pride and they will sail their own boat during the Canal Parade. It is great to see how a friendship that goes back to my student days can now lead to something so special. Thank you Long Yip!
Also new compared to 2019 is most of the Pride 2022 team. At the office we got support from BeyonG Veldkamp, a lovely person and terrific builder of bridges. In 2017 she received the Jos Brink innovation award from the Minister of Education, Culture and Science, and in 2019 she was awarded a Bob Angelo ‘Star of the Future’ by the COC. At the office, Lars Brunnhoff is a new face. However, he has already done a lot in the past as one of our Pride volunteers. Furthermore, the board is also completely new.
In the run-up to the 25th edition of the boat parade, which had to be pushed forward twice by COVID 19, the city of Amsterdam has come up with a new Pride policy. After several years and then several months of delay, we were supposed to receive the final version in the beginning of May. However, when I handed in my copy for this column on June 20, it still hadn’t arrived and hadn’t been approved by the city.
Even though we are now making the final arrangement for Pride 2022, we have no idea what is hanging over our heads and whether there is a future for us still after this edition. Perhaps that is for the best. Happy Pride!!
VAN BEHOORLIJK TRADITIONEEL NAAR FANTASTISCHE BUSINESS CLUB

De Dam en LHBTI-zijn. Dat is meer dan nu en dan een demo of het slotfeest van de Pride. Dat bewijst de Koninklijke Industrieele Groote Club. Voorzitter Douwe Lodewijk (63) – openlijk gay - streeft naar meer openheid binnen het ogenschijnlijk zo gesloten bolwerk.
Douwe Lodewijk Douwe heeft ons uitgenodigd voor een lunch op de club zelf. We worden uitstekend bediend door een voortreffelijk op elkaar ingespeeld duo. Interessant: de een is een stagiair, de ander werkt er al veertig jaar. Vriendelijk valt het zonlicht naar binnen door vers gelapte ramen die in ons geval uitzicht bieden op kwaliteitsboekhandel Scheltema en de stromende fontein aan het Rokin. Om ons heen leeftijdsgenoten: vijftigers en zestigers dus die gedempt converseren. Hoewel het natuurlijk niet de bedoeling is dat er onderwerpen naar buiten worden gebracht, gebiedt de eerlijkheid ons te zeggen dat die te alledaags zijn om geheim te houden: Corona, Oekraïne en het weer.
Hogere Spinazieschool Ontspannen praat Douwe over zijn jeugd in Sint Annaparochie, dat tegenwoordig deel uitmaakt van de gemeente Waadhoeke en zo’n 4000 inwoners telt. ‘Ik heb zeventien jaar in het dorp gewoond en ben er naar de lagere en middelbare school gegaan, je kent het wel. Het was erg beklemmend allemaal en ik wilde hoe dan ook in een stad gaan wonen. Dat werd eerst Wageningen, waar ik Facilitair Management
THE ROYAL INDUSTRIEELE GROOTE CLUB OPENS ITS DOORS
Dam Square and being LGBT is more than an occasional demonstration or Pride closing party, as becomes evident in this society and business club. Their openly gay President Douwe Lodewijk (63) is aiming for more openness within this apparently closed stronghold. Douwe invited us to have lunch at the Club. We are served by two superbly coordinated waiters. Interestingly, one of them is an intern, and the other has been working there for more than forty years. The sunlight kindly shines through freshly cleaned windows, offering a view of the quality book store Scheltema and the Orkin water fountain. We are surrounded by people of about the same age, people in their fifties and sixties having muted conversations. While certain topics aren’t meant to be brought out in the open, they were actually too mundane for secrecy: COVID-19, the Ukraine and the weather.
Domestic Science School Douwe talks about his childhood in Sint Annaparochie, which is now part of the municipality of Waadhoeke and has about 4,000 inhabitants. “I lived in the village for seventeen years and went to its primary and secondary school. It was all very oppressive, and I wanted to live in a city anyway. Initially that meant Wageningen, where I studied Facility Management. At the time it was called Applied Household Sciences, but I called it the Higher Domestic Science School. In my very first year I joined the Student Board and made sure that the name of the school was changed, because then at least it would attract more men. I did finish it, but considered it too focused on the non-profit sector. That is why I continued my education at Nyenrode Business University.” During an internship in Amsterdam, Douwe
ging studeren. Dat heette in die tijd Toegepaste Huishoudwetenschappen, maar ik noemde het de Hogere Spinazieschool. Ik ging meteen in het eerste jaar in het Studentenbestuur zitten en zorgde ervoor dat de naam werd veranderd, want dan kwamen er tenminste meer mannen op af. Ik heb de opleiding wel afgemaakt, maar ik vond het toch te veel gericht op de non-profitsector.
MET SCHILDERIJEN EN TAFELZILVER ONDER DE ARM WERD DE OVERSTEEK GEMAAKT
Vandaar dat ik nog een jaar Nyenrode er achteraan heb gedaan.’ Tijdens een stage in Amsterdam sloeg Douwe aan het worstelen met zijn seksuele gevoelens. ‘Als je uit Friesland kwam, zag je nooit homo’s. Ja, Albert Mol en andere stereotype nichten op TV. Maar ik dacht: zo ben ik niet. Uiteindelijk ben ik via een doorverwijzing van de huisarts bij de Schorerstichting beland. Die bestond toen nog en had denk ik een rol als het tegenwoordig het coc of andere zelforganisaties. Vergeet niet: we praten over 1978. Ze hebben me daar uitstekend geholpen en zeiden: je moet het eerst voor jezelf accepteren voordat je het met je ouders bespreekt. Zo gezegd zo gedaan. Mijn ouders hebben vervolgens prima gereageerd en er geen probleem van gemaakt. In het dorp werd er verder ook nooit geheimzinnig over gedaan. Ook niet door mij, al voel ik me als ik daar weer eens kom nog altijd wel the only gay in the village.’ Douwe kwam na zijn studie te werken als leidinggevende bij een schoonmaakbedrijf in Den Haag. Dat werd kort daarna overgenomen door Randstad, dat op een gegeven moment méér wilde dan alleen personeel uitzenden, aangezien dat te conjunctuurgevoelig was. Het hoofdkantoor van Randstad stond in Diemen, Douwe verhuisde al snel naar Amsterdam en is er sinds 1986 niet meer weggegaan, behalve om zakelijk en privé veel te reizen. Momenteel omschrijft hij zich als een allround bestuurder met een brede managementervaring die zich thuisvoelt in bijvoorbeeld raden van toezicht ‘omdat je dan heel breed, heel ruim kunt kijken. Wel ben ik altijd in die zakelijke dienstverlening blijven hangen. En eigenlijk vind ik dat wel prima.’
Behoorlijk traditioneel Zo’n 25 jaar geleden werd hij lid van wat nu
started struggling with his sexuality. “If you were from Friesland, you never saw any gay people. Yes, Albert Mol and other stereotypical queens on TV. But I thought: I’m not like that. I ended up at the Schorerstichting through a referral from my GP. It still existed then and I think had a similar role to that of the COC or other LGBT organisations nowadays. Don’t forget that it was 1978. They helped me a lot and said: you have to accept it before you discuss it with your parents. No sooner said than done. My parents were very understanding, and it wasn’t something that was kept quiet in the village. Neither did I, although I still feel like the only gay in the village when I go back.” After his studies, Douwe worked as a manager at a cleaning company in The Hague. Shortly after starting there, the company was taken over by Randstad, which at a certain point wanted to do more than just send out staff, as that could pose problematic in economic downturns. Randstad’s headquarters was in Diemen, and Douwe soon moved to Amsterdam in 1986 to forever stay put there, except when travelling for business or pleasure. He currently describes himself as an all-round managing director who feels at home in, for instance, supervisory boards because of its wide range. I have always been involved in business services, and I’m fine with that.” Industrieele Groote Club. As a Nyenrode graduate he was accepted without question, meaning that is not the case for everyone, as one’s admission is put to a vote. But more on that later. “In the beginning I thought it was all rather traditional; the average member’s age was quite “respectable”, but that has changed over time. It is great society club, a fantastic business club and a wonderful meeting place. It is a pleasure to come here, a sentiment shared by the approximately 1,300 members.”

Maar daarover later meer. ‘In het begin vond ik het behoorlijk traditioneel; de gemiddelde leeftijd van de leden was ook nogal respectabel, maar inmiddels is dat veranderd: het is een geweldige sociëteit, een fantastische business club en een gezellige ontmoetingsplek. Het is een plezier om hier te komen en dat merk je ook aan de bijna 1300 mensen die hier lid zijn.’
Op de website www.igc.nl staat de bewogen geschiedenis vermeld. In 1872 werd Sociëteit de Groote Club opgericht die ten doel had ‘in goed ingerichte lokalen het gezellig verkeer te bevorderen tussen haar leden.’ Daartoe werd een pand gebouwd op de hoek van de Kalverstraat en de Dam. Lang zat daar de Rabobank in, nu de flagshipstore van Armani. De leden bestonden vooral uit gegoede families en de activiteiten waren voornamelijk literair van aard. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het pand door de Duitse bezetters geconfisqueerd en doorverkocht met de toezegging dat de Groote Club het pand na de bevrijding zou kunnen terugkopen. Vanuit het raam van de Groote Club vond ook de beruchte schietpartij plaats, door Duitse soldaten, richting feestvierders op de Dam, op 7 mei 1945. Die toezegging tot terugkoop werd echter - rampzalig genoeg - nooit op schrift gesteld. Uiteindelijk heeft de Groote Club het pand gehuurd totdat zij in 1975 de inmiddels sterk gestegen huurprijs niet meer kon opbrengen.
Sinds 1969 mogen ook vrouwen lid worden Ongeveer parallel daaraan gebeurde het volgende: in april 1913 werd in het huis van een Amsterdamse ondernemer besloten om een ‘Industrieele Club’ op te richten, met als doel een centrum te stichten voor de in opkomst zijnde Nederlandse industrie en handel. De oprichters waren grootindustriëlen en overige ondernemers verspreid over heel Nederland. Men zocht voor samenwerking contact met de Groote Club, maar daar werd men beleefd doch dwingend de deur gewezen. Oud geld houdt niet van nieuw geld, een situatie die de afgelopen 100 jaar niet wezenlijk is veranderd. De Industrieele Club startte dus maar gewoon op, in 1913 met 178 leden, maar dan zonder huisvesting. Daar kwam verandering in toen door de club wat later – en wat verderop op de Dam - het pand ‘Industria’ werd gebouwd, nabij het huidige Nationaal Monument.

Als gezegd: de leden van de Groote Club konden zo rond 1975 de huurprijs van het pand aan de Dam niet meer betalen. Met de schilderijen en het tafelzilver onder de arm waagde men de oversteek naar de andere kant van de Dam. Onder de naam ‘Industrieele Groote Club’ wordt sindsdien het sociëteitsleven voortgezet in het gebouw ‘Industria’. Tot op de dag van vandaag beschikt de club nog steeds over de parterre en de eerste en tweede verdieping. Daarboven zit tegenwoordig hotel TwentySeven. In 2013 ontving de club het predicaat Koninklijk en heet sindsdien de Koninklijke Industrieele Groote Club. Het huidige ledenbestand bestaat uit bedrijfsleden (afgeleid van de Industrieele Club) en particuliere leden (afgeleid van de Groote Club). Sinds 1969 is het ook voor vrouwen mogelijk om lid worden. Momenteel is 40% van het aantal bezoekers van clubactiviteiten vrouw.
Aan de schaaktafel wordt geschaakt Veel van die activiteiten vinden plaats binnen zogeheten ‘Tafels’. Dit zijn thematische bijeenkomsten, georganiseerd door commissieleden van de desbetreffende tafel. Bij de onderwerpen valt te denken aan mode, kunst en cultuur, Amsterdam, Oost-Europa & Centraal-Azië en schaken. Douwe: ‘Je komt hier binnen voor een borrel, daarna heb je een lezing door een deskundige, bijvoorbeeld Sacha de Boer, Robbert Dijkgraaf of Hedy d’Ancona en na die lezing heb je een diner. En o ja: aan de schaaktafels wordt geschaakt natuurlijk. De Amsterdamtafel heb ik trouwens zelf opgericht. Ik stond op het balkon naar de inhuldiging van Koning Willem-Alexander te kijken en dacht: wat hebben we toch een mooie club op een mooie plek in Amsterdam. We zouden een Tafel moeten hebben waar mensen worden uitgenodigd die gezichtsbepalend zijn voor Amsterdam. Mensen als oud-Artisdirecteur Haig Balian, bijvoorbeeld. En zo geschiedde.
Op elke Tafelbijeenkomst komen tachtig à honderdvijftig mensen af. Als je hier lid bent is het lidmaatschap van een Tafel of een commissie trouwens niet verplicht. We hebben een programma en als je dat interessant vindt ga je er heen. Of niet natuurlijk.’
Liever wat diverser Behalve de Tafels is er een jaarfeest, een kerstborrel, een black tie-dinner, een

I myself set up the Amsterdam Table. I was on the balcony watching the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander and thought: what a beautiful club we have here in this beautiful place that is Amsterdam. We should have a Table committee to invite the people who determine the face of Amsterdam. People like former Artis Director Haig Balian, to name one. Each Table meeting attracts around 80-150 visitors. If you are a member here, membership of a Table or a committee is not mandatory.

Hoe kan dat nou weer? ‘We doen tegenwoordig meer de deuren open. Wel word je – als je lid wilt worden – geballoteerd. We hebben hier wel eens mensen gehad die bij wijze van speken binnen twee maanden hun lidmaatschap eruit wilden hebben en bij elke bijeenkomst visitekaartjes gingen rondstrooien. Dat is nou ook weer niet de bedoeling. Wel moet je maatschappelijk en cultureel geïnteresseerd zijn, een goed opleidingsniveau hebben of op dat niveau via werk of iets anders actief zijn en je op je gemak voelen bij gelijkgestemde mensen. Dat laatste gaat bij sommige leden erg ver en die beschouwen het gebouw zelfs als hun tweede huis. Tijdens corona hebben we een soort intranet voor leden opgezet en was de keuken druk in de weer met het samenstellen van maaltijdboxen waar de leden uitgebreid gebruik van hebben gemaakt. Het is de kracht van de club dat dat allemaal zo snel en flexibel kon.’ We komen toch nog even terug op de geslotenheid van de club en het gebouw en de middels ballotage toetreding als lid. Terwijl tegelijkertijd de deuren verder opengaan. Hoe zit het nou? ‘Graag wil ik benoemen dat iedereen hier kan worden geïntroduceerd door een ander lid. Ook kan je een afspraak maken om een kennismakingsavond bij te wonen. Ik zie ook liever dat de club wat diverser wordt. Natuurlijk is bijna de helft van de leden vrouw en we hebben ook veel mensen die LHBTI zijn. Maar als het even kan, zag ik ook meer mensen met een niet-westerse achtergrond. Die zijn wat ondervertegenwoordigd. Wel hebben we de afgelopen jaren een sterke verjonging
van het ledenbestand gehad middels de jonge IGC met leden onder de 35 jaar. Die stimuleren dan weer andere jongeren om hier eens te gaan kijken. Overigens kan iedereen van 21 jaar of ouder hier lid worden. Wij staan open voor een complete kleurenwaaier aan mensen en wie dit leest en het leuk lijkt om de club een keer van binnen te zien: stuur een mailtje naar voorzitter@igc.nl. Je zult zien: het gebouw lijkt misschien op een burcht, maar eenmaal binnen voel je je meteen thuis en je hebt het mooiste uitzicht op de Dam van iedereen. Hoewel: misschien behalve het uitzicht vanuit het raam van Koning Willem Alexander.’

We try to open the doors more. However, a person’s admission is put to the vote. For instance, we’ve had people in here who wanted to make the most of their membership within a month or two and showered us with business cards at every meeting. That is not how we like to see it. You must, however, be socially and culturally interested, have a good level of education or be active at that level through work or otherwise, and feel comfortable with like-minded people. The latter goes a long way for some members, and they even consider the club their second home. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we set up a kind of intranet for members, and the kitchen was busy putting together meal boxes that members have used extensively. It is the strength of the club that this could all be done so quickly.” We are wondering how the club’s exclusivity and putting potential members admittance to the vote dovetails with their wish to be more open. How can you explain that? “I would like to stress that anyone can be introduced by another member. You can also make an appointment to attend an introductory evening. I also prefer to see the club more diverse. Almost half of the members are women, and we have a lot LGBTI members. But I have to admit that people with a non-Western background are somewhat underrepresented. In recent years, however, we did see a strong rejuvenation of the membership through the young IGC with members under the age of 35. They then encourage other young people to have a look. Anyone aged 21 or older can become a member here. We are open to whomever reads this, no matter what background, and would like to see the club from the inside. PRIDE AMBASSADOR AHMAD JOUDEH “DANCE OR DIE. TO ME, THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE.”
Ballet dancer and choreographer Ahmad Joudeh was speechless when he was elected Pride ambassador. He is proud to be one of the faces of Pride Amsterdam. He was born in a refugee camp in Damascus where he spent his childhood with his family. From an early age, Ahmad learned to stand up for himself. Street fights are common there. “I fought back. I had to fight in order to survive.” In the camp he was seen as ‘different’: he was not only stateless but also had a great interest in dance. Something that is seen as strange for a boy. “Dance was and is important to me.”
His father therefore regularly abuses him. “I learned that love should be for everyone, not just for boys. And growing up I was in a relationship with another boy.” He kept dancing and attended a dance institute from the age of 16, graduating in 2016. Later on, he participated in the Arabic version of the popular So You Think You Can Dance. In Syria he was threatened by extremists, purely because he is a dancer and gives dance lessons to children. At 23, he had his life motto Dance or Die tattooed on his neck, exactly where the knife would hit him in case he would be executed. Dancing is his life. Ahmad ending up in the Netherlands is pure chance. His encounter with a Dutch documentary maker turns his life upside down. The documentary maker made a film about him. “Even though I knew next to nothing about the Netherlands, I decided to go there.” He will never forget the 5-hour flight. “Everything changed.” The unthinkable became reality. “I was free at last.” The message he wants to convey as ambassador is to emphasize how important it is to live in security and peace, protected by a government. “Regardless of your nationality, religion or gender. I want to be an example for people because there is nothing wrong with being completely yourself and loving whomever you choose.” He embraces life. His talent, charisma and enthusiasm make him an ideal Pride ambassador. Ahmad will continue to dance to the music of freedom. “I am proud of who I am and how I live.” “As a community, we’ve made huge strides, but we shouldn’t think that means the fight is over.”

Balletdanser en choreograaf Ahmad Joudeh was sprakeloos toen hij verkozen werd tot Pride ambassadeur. Hij is trots dat hij een van de gezichten van de oudste Prides ter wereld wordt.
Hij wordt geboren in een vluchtelingenkamp in Damascus waar hij samen met familie zijn jeugd doorbrengt. Van jongs af aan leert Ahmad voor zichzelf op te komen. Straatgevechten zijn aan de orde van de dag. ‘Ik vocht terug. Het was vechten om te overleven.’
In het kamp wordt hij gezien als ‘anders’: hij is niet alleen stateloos maar heeft ook een grote belangstelling voor dans. Iets dat voor een jongen als vreemd wordt gezien. ’Dans was en is zo belangrijk voor mij.’
Zijn vader mishandelt hem daarom regelmatig. ‘Ik leerde dat liefde voor iedereen is, niet alleen voor jongens.

En toen ik opgroeide had ik een relatie met een jongen.’ Hij blijft dansen en gaat op zijn zestiende dans studeren. In 2016 studeert hij af. Later mee aan de Arabische versie van het populaire programma So You Think You Can Dance.
In Syrië wordt hij bedreigd door extremisten, puur omdat hij danser is en dansles geeft aan kinderen. Op zijn 23e laat hij zijn levensmotto Dance or Die in zijn nek tatoeëren. Net op de plek waar het mes hem zou raken in geval van

executie. Dansen is zijn bestaan. Dat Ahmad in Nederland belandt is een toevalstreffer. Zijn ontmoeting met een Nederlandse documentairemaker zet zijn leven op zijn kop. Die maakt een film over hem. ‘Hoewel ik niets wist over Nederland koos ik ervoor hiernaar toe te gaan.’ De vliegreis van vijf uur staat op zijn netvlies gebrand. ‘Alles werd anders.’ Het onvoorstelbare wordt werkelijkheid. ‘Eindelijk was ik vrij.’
De boodschap die hij als ambassadeur wil uitdragen is te benadrukken hoe belangrijk het is in veiligheid en vrede te leven beschermd door een overheid. ‘Ongeacht je nationaliteit, religie of gender. Ik wil een voorbeeld zijn voor mensen want er is niets mis mee om volledig jezelf te zijn en lief te hebben wie je kiest.’
Het leven lacht hem toe. Door zijn talent, uitstraling en bevlogenheid is hij de ideale Pride ambassadeur. Ahmad blijft dansen op muziek van de vrijheid. ’Ik ben trots op wie ik ben en hoe ik leef.’
PRIDE AMBASSADOR BEYONG VELDKAMP “THE PATH TO MY GENDER AND SEXUALITY WASN’T A BED OF ROSES.”
BeyonG Veldkamp came out of the closet twice. To her, her ambassadorship is recognition for her commitment to the transgender community. As a born networker and activist, she is the perfect ambassador for Pride 2022. “Being asked to be an ambassador is one of the best things that happened to me.” In the past, she was a guest of King WillemAlexander and Queen Maxima as an exemplary citizen. And in December 2021, she receives a wonderful ‘Stars of the Future’ award from COC Netherlands for her tireless commitment to our community. BeyonG knows the transgender community like no other. Her life was and is never easy. ‘I was born as a boy in Paramaribo, 36 years ago. That is where I grew up. When I was fifteen, I went to the Netherlands with my mother’. During her puberty she noticed that she likes boys. At 23, another ‘coming-out’ follows: now as a transgender person. “My social environment was not very understanding. Conversations with psychiatrists and various hormone treatments follow each other in rapid succession. BeyonG often thought of killing herself. But soon thereafter, she starts transitioning into a woman. “Finally, I was becoming who I wanted to be. Just BeyonG.” The transition leaves deep traces. She has to deal with domestic violence, manipulation, discrimination, and racism. “My own father didn’t accept me.” and empathy are striking. In 2013, she founded Trans United Europe together with a few others. She becomes its vice-president. “It was the start of a beautiful journey into my true gender and sexuality.” “I have never regretted my transition. It was a difficult journey, but in the end, I am so glad I did it. I will always believe in myself. If you do that, thinks will certainly work out for you.” As a Pride 2022 ambassador, she wants to send the message that freedom and security are the most important things in life. “Everything revolves around that. As a trans woman, I hope
to be an inspiration to many. Although you have to work four times as hard as a transgender, it is worth the effort. Nothing is as one-dimensional as it seems, And I want to share my story with everyone. Here I am. A trans woman who is not ashamed of anything.”
PRIDE AMBASSADOR ENVY PERU “I’VE COME A LONG WAY.”
name Envy Peru. She is not only a drag queen, actor, model and make-up artist, but also a Pride 2022 ambassador. A few years ago, she was elected winner in the TV show ‘Drag Race Holland’. It was her break-through moment. “It is a great honour because you don’t just become an ambassador. I am proud to be seen as an example, especially when you realize where I come from.” Paul and I have been very good friends for years, and that is why our ambassadorship is so special. I love that we now have two Latino representatives at this year’s Pride. It is wonderful.”
She still vividly remembers her very first Pride. “I had just turned nineteen and went there with two of my best friends. I was still firmly in the closet at the time, and found it all very exciting. I remember seeing drag queens Megan Schoonbrood and Sugi at the Canal Parade. I looked at them with admiration. Until then I hadn’t seen many drag queens at all.” She never would have thought that years later, she would be standing there on a boat herself. “I never thought for a moment that I was looking at my own future.”
“My mother raised me with a lot of love for my roots. When I chose my drag name, I wanted to make a connection with Peru as I am extremely proud of my culture of origin. I want to give my native country the representation that is

Boris Itzkovich Escobar is beter bekend onder zijn artiestennaam Envy Peru. Ze is niet alleen dragqueen, acteur, model en visagist maar dit jaar ook Pride ambassadeur.
ik super trots ben op de cultuur waar ik vandaan kom. Ik wil mijn geboorteland die niet genoeg wordt vertegenwoordigd representatie geven. Envy betekent iemand benijden en mooi vinden. Daarmee bedoel ik dat iemand uit Peru meer is dan een stereotype als kleine indianen, panfluiten en lama’s. Iemand uit Peru kan ook een prachtige queen en diva zijn.’
Als ambassadeur wil zij bruggen slaan tussen de LHBTgemeenschap en de rest van de wereld. ‘Ik kan mijn eigen platform daar goed voor inzetten. Deze community heeft mij zo ontzettend gesteund door de jaren. Ik wil graag iets betekenen en terug doen voor hen die zo veel gegeven hebben.’ ’Drag is een kunstvorm. ‘Drag werd voornamelijk gewaardeerd in onze community. Ik haal het naar een groter publiek. Weet je, er heersen nog zoveel vooroordelen over onze kunstvorm. Ik hoop dat, als mensen buiten onze gemeenschap mij zien of horen, ik ze toch van gedachten kan laten veranderen en dat drag genormaliseerd wordt.’
Als ambassadeur en als dragqueen bruist ze van energie. Wel maakt Envy zich zorgen. ‘Dat is de angst dat we teruggaan in de tijd. Ik vind dat we als LHBT-ers nog niet genoeg beschermd zijn als het gaat om discriminatie en geweld. Daar moet echt verandering in komen. Ik heb veel vertrouwen in de openheid van de nieuwe generatie. Helaas zijn dat nu nog niet de leiders van de toekomst. Ik hoop nog mee te kunnen maken dat elk lid van onze community in vrijheid mag houden van wie hij/zij/hem wil.’ Als we haar vragen wie zij beschouwt als haar grote voorbeeld hoeft Envy niet lang na te denken. ‘Dat is toch mijn moeder. Zij heeft toen zij mij kreeg, op jonge leeftijd veel moeten opgeven om mij een betere toekomst te geven. Als 24-jarige met een kind van vier emigreerde zij illegaal naar een ander land. Dat doen velen haar niet na. Het is haar gelukt en daar ben ik eeuwig dankbaar voor. Ik ben van ver gekomen.’
Enkele jaren geleden wordt zij winnaar van het televisieprogramma ‘Drag Race Holland’. Het betekent haar doorbraak. ’Het is een grote eer want ambassadeur word je niet zomaar. Trots dat ik als voorbeeld word gezien. Helemaal als je je realiseert waar ik vandaan kom.’ ‘Samen met zanger Paul Morris was ik te gast tijdens een nieuwjaarsspecial van dragqueen Niki Today. Paul en ik zijn al jaren ontzettend goede vrienden en daarom is ons beider ambassadeurschap zo bijzonder. Ik vind het geweldig dat we dit jaar tijdens de Pride twee latino-vertegenwoordigers hebben. Het is fantastisch.’ De eerste Pride die zij meemaakte herinnert ze zich nog levendig. ‘Ik was net negentien. Met twee van mijn beste vriendinnen ging ik ernaartoe. Ik zat toen nog volledig in de kast en vond het heel spannend. Ik weet nog goed dat ik tijdens de Canal Parade de dragqueens Megan Schoonbrood en Sugi zag staan. Vol bewondering keek ik naar hen. Tot dat moment had ik nog niet vaak dragqueens gezien.’ Dat ze er jaren later zelf als op een boot zou staan, kon ze toen niet bevroeden. ‘Geen moment heb ik eraan gedacht dat ik naar mijn eigen toekomst keek.’
‘Mijn moeder heeft mij grootgebracht met veel liefde voor mijn roots. Toen ik mijn drag naam uitkoos wilde ik sowieso een verbinding maken met Peru omdat
somewhat lacking. Envy means to envy and find someone beautiful. By that I mean that someone from Peru is more than a stereotype like little natives, pan flutes and llamas. Someone from Peru can also be a beautiful queen and diva.”
As ambassador she wants to build bridges between the LGBT community and the rest of the world. “I can use my own platform for that. This community has supported me so much over the years. I would like to mean something and give back to those who have given so much. Drag is an art form, and drag is mostly only appreciated in our community. I will introduce it to a wider audience. You know, there are still so many prejudices about our art form. I hope that when people outside our community see or hear me, I can still make them change their mind to make drag something completely normal.”
As an ambassador and as a drag queen, she is brimming with energy. Envy is concerned, however. “That’s the fear of going back in time. I think that we as LGBT people are not yet sufficiently protected when it comes to discrimination and violence. That really has to change. I have great faith in the openness of the new generation. Unfortunately, these are not yet the leaders of the future. I hope to experience that every member of our community can freely love whomever he/she/him/her wants.”
When we ask who she considers her role model, Envy doesn’t have to think twice. “Certainly that would be my mother. When she had me, she had to give up a lot at a young age, to give me a better future. As a 24-year-old with a 4-year-old child, she emigrated to another country illegally. Not everyone would have taken that step. She succeeded and I am eternally grateful for that. I’ve come a long way.”
PRIDE AMBASSADOR JASON BHUGWANDASS “TRANSITION OR DEATH”

Jason Bhugwandass groeit als meisje op in een gebroken Amsterdams gezin. Hij wordt veel aan zijn lot overgelaten. In zijn puberteit wordt hij onhandelbaar en belandt in de jeugdzorg.
‘Een heftige periode. Ik heb met eigen ogen de donkere kant van de jeugdzorg gezien.’ Hij heeft regelmatig diepe depressies en wordt geplaagd door zelfmoordgedachten. ‘Die periode was een hel op aarde voor mij.’ Op zijn dertiende ontdekt hij dat hij zich anders voelt. ‘Er klopte iets niet met mijn lichaam. Wat het was kon ik niet benoemen.’
Dan: ‘Ik wilde helemaal geen transgender zijn.’ Tot zijn achttiende worstelt hij met zijn identiteit. Twee jaar geleden ging zijn droom in vervulling: na een lange en zware aanloopperiode begint zijn medische transitie. Wat hieraan voorafging is met geen pen te beschrijven. ‘Hoeveel psychologen en hulpverleners ik niet heb gesproken.’ Het moment dat hij uit de operatie uit zijn narcose bijkwam, staat voor altijd op zijn netvlies gebrand. Trots laat Jason de eerste beelden zien na de operatie. Waarop hij met ontbloot bovenlijf te zien is. Onder zijn borstpartij een grote horizontaal gehechte wond. ‘Dagenlang wilde ik geen T-shirt aan, zo blij was ik met het resultaat. Ik wilde het met iedereen delen. Eindelijk was ik man.’
Het idee dat de lasten op een dag voorbij zouden zijn, hield hem op de been, zo vertelt hij zachtjes. Jason ziet zichzelf als een goed voorbeeld voor anderen die net als hij toen in dezelfde situatie zitten. ‘Ik heb zelf altijd veel gehad aan transmensen die iets verder waren dan ik. Nu ik aan het einde van mijn transitie sta, voel ik me geaard.’
Zijn agenda vult zich als ambassadeur op weg naar Pride 2022 met bliksemkracht, Hij gaat een krachtige boodschap brengen. ‘Ik heb mezelf eerder opgetrokken aan de Jason van de toekomst. Als ik kijk hoe lang en zwaar de weg om hier te zitten niet is geweest, dan ben ik heel trots op die jongere versie van mezelf. Die strijd ben ik alleen aangegaan. Maar het was het meer dan honderd procent waard. ‘Het heeft me zelfverzekerder, authentieker en weerbaarder gemaakt. Dat hoop ik als ambassadeur aan iedereen in dezelfde positie mee te kunnen geven. ‘Ik heb niet voor niets gestreden.’
Amsterdam home. He is often left to his own devices, and in his puberty, and he becomes unmanageable, ending up in youth care. “It was a difficult period. I have seen the dark side of youth care with my own eyes.” He regularly had deep depressions and was plagued by suicidal thoughts. “That period was hell on earth for me.” At thirteen he discovers that he feels different. “Something wasn’t right with my body. I couldn’t put into words what that was exactly.” He continues: “I did not want to be transgender at all.” He struggled with his identity until he was eighteen. Two years ago, his dream came true: after a long and difficult start-up period, his medical transition began. What preceded this is indescribable. “I saw many psychologists and counsellors.” He will never forget the moment he woke up from surgery. Jason proudly shows the first post-op images on which he can be seen bare-chested. Under his chest a large horizontally stitch. “For days I didn’t want to wear a T-shirt, I was that happy with the result. I wanted to share it with everyone. “I was a man at last.” He told us that the idea that his burdens would one day be over kept him going. Jason sees himself as a good example for others who are in the same situation as he was then. ‘I have always been very interested in trans people who were some steps further than me. Now that I am at the end of my transition, I feel grounded.” As Pride 2022 ambassador, his agenda is completely full. He is going to deliver a powerful message. “In the past, I’ve pulled myself up to future Jason. When I look at how long and hard my journey was, I’m very proud of my younger self. I had to fight that battle solo. But it was more than one hundred percent worth it. “It has made me more confident, authentic and resilient. As an ambassador, I hope to be able to pass this on to everyone in the same position. “My fight was worth it.”

Rotterdammer Ronald Benita voelt zich als Youth Pride ambassadeur 2022 als een vis in het water nu hij na een spannende verkiezing Youth Ambassador is geworden. Trots overheerste toen hij hoorde dat hij dit jaar de prestigieuze titel mag dragen. Hoe hij zijn ambassadeurschap gaat invullen is duidelijk. Luisteren en inspireren wordt zijn boodschap.
De ambitie jeugdambassadeur te willen worden ontstond een paar jaar geleden, vertelt Ronald die aan de Rotterdamse theaterschool een opleiding volgt. ‘Vorig jaar twijfelde ik enorm of ik mij zou aanmelden. Helaas heb ik het toen niet gedaan, omdat ik het gevoel had dat ik hier nog niet klaar voor was. Een tijdje geleden zag ik een oproep via het instagram account van Youth Pride. Ik moet zeggen dat ik ook dit jaar mijn twijfels had me aan te melden. Uiteindelijk heb ik me toch aangemeld door een video in te sturen.’ Hij heeft geworsteld met zichzelf en zijn homoseksualiteit. ‘Ik hoop dat ik met mijn kennis en ervaring nu anderen kan helpen deze worsteling kleiner kan maken.’ Als ambassadeur kan hij dat verschil maken. Het resultaat was dat hij uit de vele inzendingen werd gekozen. ‘Als ambassadeur vind ik het erg belangrijk dat Pride toegankelijk is voor iedereen die er naartoe wil. Van dichtbij merk ik dat het best een drempel kan zijn om naar Pride te gaan en eraan mee te doen. Als je bijvoorbeeld nog in de kast zit of twijfelt, kan dit best beangstigend zijn.’ Zelf deelt Ronald op Paarse Vrijdag flyers uit. Dit is dé grote actiedag van de GSA (Gender & Sexuality Alliance). Door elk jaar op de tweede vrijdag in december veel basis-, middelbare- en hogescholen paars te kleuren. Ook universiteiten in ons land doen mee. Zo zet de alliantie zich in voor seksuele- en genderdiversiteit als norm. Niet alleen worden dan flyers uitgedeeld maar er worden ook posters opgehangen. Met als doel zichtbaarheid te creëren. ‘Het lijkt mij goed om tijdens de Pride ook flyers uit te delen en posters op te hangen op scholen. Ik wil graag duidelijk maken, dat Pride géén feestje is. Natuurlijk is de jaarlijkse Pride super leuk en gezellig, maar er zit ook zo een belangrijke betekenis achter. En zou dat graag willen uitleggen zodat jongeren beter weten wat Pride inhoudt.’
Drie jaar geleden maakte hij zijn eerste Pride mee. ‘Direct ben ik uit de kast gekomen. Ik heb toen een foto gemaakt waar ik voor een bord stond met de tekst ‘Welkom bij Pride Amsterdam’. Die heb ik gepost en heb daarna mijn telefoon weggelegd. Ik kreeg erg veel positieve reacties.’
‘Een paar jaar geleden wist ik absoluut niet wie ik was. Nu weet ik dat wel, al ben ik nog steeds aan het groeien. Met mijn zelfverzekerdheid, kennis en liefde wil ik dit graag overbrengen op andere queer mensen. Als ik mijn jongere ik van vijftien ooit had verteld dat ik op mijn zeventiende uit de kast zou komen en later ook nog eens Pride ambassadeur zou zijn, had ik dat waarschijnlijk nooit geloofd.’

“I cannot wait to get started.” “To be honest, I had to let it sink in because it was pretty big news.”
This ambition to become youth ambassador arose a few years ago, says Ronald, who is studying at the Rotterdam theatre school. “Last year, I was still very unsure whether I wanted to sign up at all. Unfortunately, I didn’t, because I didn’t feel ready yet. doubts about signing up this year as well. In the end, I did sign up by submitting a video.” He was struggling with himself and his homosexuality. “I hope that through my knowledge and experience, I can now help others ease this struggle.” As an ambassador, he can make that difference.
Eventually, he was chosen from many entries. “As an ambassador, I think it is very important that Pride is accessible to everyone. I’ve noticed that it can be quite a barrier to go to Pride and participate in it. For example, if you are still in the closet or in doubt, this can still be quite frightening.
Ronald himself hands out flyers on Purple Friday. This is the big day for the GSA (Gender & Sexuality Alliance). Every year, on the second Friday in December, many primary and secondary schools, and colleges of advanced education feature the colour purple. In the Netherlands, universities are also participating. The alliance, for instance, is committed to sexual and gender diversity as the norm. Not only are flyers handed out, but posters

BeyonG Veldkamp kwam tweemaal uit de kast. Voor haar is het ambassadeurschap dé erkenning voor haar inzet voor de transgender community.
Als netwerker en activist pur sang is zij een gedroomde ambassadeur voor Pride 2022.’Dat ik gevraagd ben als ambassadeur is een van de mooiste van dingen die me tot nu toe overkwamen.’ Eerder was zij als uitblinker te gast bij koning Willem-Alexander en koningin Maxima. En in december 2021 ontving zij van COC Nederland een prachtig ‘Sterren van de Toekomst’ prijs voor haar onvermoeibare inzet voor onze community. BeyonG kent de transgender community als geen ander. Haar leven loopt niet over een leien dakje. ‘Ik werd 36 jaar geleden als jongen geboren in Paramaribo. Daar groeide ik op. Op mijn vijftiende ging ik samen met mijn moeder naar Nederland’. Tijdens haar puberteit merkt ze dat ze op jongens valt. Op haar 23e volgt een andere ‘coming-out’: nu als transgender. ‘In mijn omgeving kon ik rekenen op veel onbegrip. Gesprekken met psychiaters en verschillende hormoonkuren volgen elkaar in hoog tempo op. BeyonG denkt vaak aan zelfdoding. Niet lang daarna begint ze met de transitie tot vrouw.
‘Eindelijk werd ik mezelf. Gewoon BeyonG.’ Het traject laat diepe sporen na. Zo krijgt ze te maken met huiselijk geweld, manipulatie, discriminatie en racisme. ‘Mijn eigen vader accepteerde me niet.’ Al snel wordt BeyonG actief in de transgender community. Haar tomeloze inzet, betrokkenheid, warme persoonlijkheid en inlevingsvermogen vallen op. In 2013 richt zij samen met enkele anderen Trans United Europa op. Ze wordt vice-voorzitter. ‘Het vormt het begin van een mooie reis naar mijn gender en seksualiteit.’‘Ik heb geen moment spijt van mijn transitie gehad. Het was een moeilijk traject maar ik ben zó blij dat ik het gedaan heb. Ik zal altijd in mezelf blijven geloven. Als je dat doet, kom je er wel.’
Als ambassadeur van Pride 2022 wil zij de boodschap meegeven dat vrijheid en veiligheid de belangrijkste zaken in het leven zijn. Daar draait alles om. Als trans vrouw hoop ik een inspiratiebron te zijn. Hoewel je als transgender vier keer zo hard moet werken, is het de inspanning waard. ‘Niets is zwart-wit. Mijn verhaal wil ik delen met iedereen. Hier ben ik dan: Een trans vrouw die zich nergens voor schaamt.’

I would like to make it clear that Pride is not a party. The annual Pride is of course wonderfully festive, but it has a message. And I would like to explain and emphasize that message in order for young people to have a better understanding of what Pride actually means.” “As ambassador I also want to do my best for queer people of colour. That is why I now want to be an example for the younger versions of myself and for others. I also want to see more black queer representation on social media, newspapers and magazines, and naturally during the annual Pride.”
Three years ago, he experienced his first Pride. “After that Pride, I came out of the closet immediately. I took a photo where I was standing in front a ‘Welcome to Pride Amsterdam’ sign and posted that and put my phone away. The response was overwhelmingly positive.
A few years ago, I had absolutely no idea who I was. Now I do know, although I’m still growing. Through my confidence, knowledge and love I would like to pass this on to other queer people. If I had ever told my younger fifteen-year-old self that I would come out at seventeen and become a Pride ambassador, I probably never would have believed it.”

Thorn de Vries is a familiar name in the LGBTI community. The non-binary entertainer has become quite famous as a drag king in Amsterdam night-life, and as an actor in the television series Spangas: de Campus and the Neflix film Anne+. As Pride Amsterdam ambassador, Thorn wants

Zeg je LHBTI-gemeenschap, dan kom je Thorn de Vries tegen. De non-binaire entertainer heeft in vogelvlucht naam gemaakt als drag king in het Amsterdamse nachtleven en als acteur in de televisieserie Spangas: de Campus en de Neflix film Anne+.
Als Pride Amsterdam ambassadeur wil hen vooral LHBTIlevens een stukje beter maken. “Ik wil gesprekken over diversiteit en commercialisering openbreken. Zo veel mogelijk mensen uit de community moeten zich kunnen herkennen in Pride.”
Hoe belangrijk gemeenschap is, weet Thorn als geen ander. “Toen ik begon met Drag ben ik omarmd door de queens.” Hen herinnert zich nog goed een van diens eerste klussen. “Een vriend van me is drag queen, hij nam me mee naar een feestje in de Melkweg.” Terugblikken op hoe hen voor de nachtclub bandjes uitdeelde, doet hen gniffelen. Het ging namelijk niet altijd even soepel. “Ik had een glitterbaard gemaakt. Die zweette halverwege naar beneden. Dus moest ik steeds het toilet inrennen om het weer omhoog te duwen.” Nu Thorn de grootste queer podia heeft gesierd, geeft hen les aan jonge drag kings: “Het is best moeilijk om gigs te krijgen. Ik wil Drag Kings daarom een plek bieden om podium ervaring op te doen.” Het advies wat Thorn hen meegeeft: “Heb gewoon lol met drag, het hoeft niet perfect.”
Ook Thorns acteerrollen hebben bijgedragen aan de emancipatie van genderdiverse mensen. Diens rol als de non-binaire Lesley in de jeugdserie Spangas: de Campus bijvoorbeeld. “Gewoon een scholier net zoals de rest, die ook een leven aan het leiden is. Dat laat zien dat wij ook maar mensen zijn.” Daarnaast speelde die in de bioscoopfilm Anne+ waarin vooral de queer seksscenes veel losmaakte. “Voor mij is het heel belangrijk dat transgender lichamen gewoon als mooi en sexy gezien worden. Maar nog belangrijker vind ik dat genderdiverse mensen zichzelf voor het eerst terugzien.”
Het thema van de Pride dit jaar My Gender, My Pride komt als geroepen. “Eindelijk gaat het ook over gender en niet alleen seksualiteit. Genderdiverse mensen zijn vaak onderbelicht.” Met een scheve grijns voegt hen daaraan toe: “Al zou het voor veel cisgender personen niet kwaad kunnen om wat bewuster met hun gender om te gaan.”

Better than most, Thorn knows how important community is.
“When I started with Drag, I was embraced by the queens.” Thorn clearly remembers one of his first gigs. “A friend of mine is a drag queen, and he took me to a party at the Melkweg.” Looking back at how they handed out wrist bands in front of the nightclub makes them chuckle. It didn’t always go smoothly.
“I had made a glitter beard, but my sweating had made it go down. So I kept running into the toilet to push it back up.” Now that Thorn has graced the biggest queer stages, Thorn is teaching young drag kings: “It’s quite hard to get gigs. I therefore want to offer Drag Kings a place to gain stage experience.” Thorn’s advice: “Just have fun. It doesn’t have to be perfect.”
Thorn’s acting roles have also contributed to the emancipation of gender-diverse people, for instance through the role as the non-binary Lesley in Spangas: The Campus. “Just another student like the rest, who is also living a life. It shows that we are only human. He has also played in the film Anne+, in which the queer sex scenes in particular triggered a lot of response. “It’s very important to me that transgender bodies are seen as beautiful and sexy. But more importantly, I think that gender-diverse people were presented with the opportunity to see themselves on the big screen for the first time.”
The theme of this year’s Pride - My Gender, My Pride - comes close to my heart. “Finally, it’s also about gender and not just sexuality. Genderdiverse people are often underexposed.” Thorn adds with a grin: “Although it wouldn’t hurt for many cisgender people to be a bit more conscious about their gender.”

FunHouse XXL Pride, de grootste FunHouse allertijden is weer terug in de monumentale Gashouder. En dat zullen we weten ook. Voor de eerste keer in haar geschiedenis zullen de bezoekers van de Amsterdam Pride de iconische ronde Gashouder in maar liefst twee achtereenvolgende avonden op haar grondvesten doen schudden
De Gashouder is een van Amsterdams meest indrukwekkende gebouwen, een industrieel monument uit 1883, welke als decor voor het grootste LGBTQI(+) dance event van de Pride dient.
Het weekend wordt op vrijdagavond 5 augustus spectaculiar gestart met de ‘FunHouse Pride - GasHouder Edition’. Tijdens dit FunHouse openings event zullen Alex Lo, Sharon O Love, Glaucio Duarte en Saeed Ali het weekend aftrappen in een wervelende show omlijst door performances, special effects, adembenemende visuals en met meer lasers dan ooit tevoren. Bezoekers van onze voorgaande GasHouder edities weten het inmiddels, dit wordt een nacht om niet te missen. Een visueel spektakel met energieke beats en kippenvel momenten, met heel veel kippenvel momenten.
FUNHOUSE XXL PRIDE EDITION 2022
FunHouse XXL Pride, the largest edition FunHouse of all time, is back in the monumental Gashouder building in Westerpark. For the first time in its history, Amsterdam Pride visitors will shake the ironically roundshaped Gashouder building to its foundations in no less than two consecutive evenings.
De Gashouder is one of Amsterdam’s most impressive buildings, an industrial monument from 1883. During Amsterdam Pride, it will be serving as the backdrop for the largest LGBTQI (+) dance event of Pride 2022. On Friday night August 5th, the Pride weekend will get a spectacular start with the ‘FunHouse Pride - GasHouder Edition’. During this FunHouse opening event, Alex Lo, Sharon O Love, Glaucio Duarte, and Saeed Ali will kick off the weekend with a dazzling show, with performances, special effects, breath-taking visuals, and with more lasers than ever before. Visitors of our previous GasHouder editions know by now that this will be a night one simply cannot miss. A visual spectacle with energetic beats and many highlights. Next night on the 6th, the party continues
De avond daarna gaat het feest vrolijk door, maar dan als de XXL versie waarbij, naast de GasHouder, ook het Transformatorhuis, de WesterLiefde en de WesterUnie zijn geopend. Vier dance-floors met elk een eigen unieke sound (Big Room, Circuit House, Progressive en Techno) en een internationale Line-up. Op dit moment zijn reeds bevestigd GSP, Alejandro Alvarez, Kitty Glitter, Dani Toro, Max del Principe & Sharon O Love. Daarnaast is, gelijk aan de avond daarvoor, het buitenplein omgetoverd naar een vrolijk Rainbow Square waar ook van alles gebeurt en het heerlijk chillen zal zijn onder de sterrenhemel in de zwoele Augustus nacht.
