2 WhistlerPRIDE 2017
welcome to whistler On behalf of the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival we are excited to welcome you in sharing our 25th Anniversary of being out and proud, on and off the slopes of Whistler. Being witness to so many dramatic changes in the landscape of the LGBT community, now more than ever, we need to defend and protect the rights we have achieved. We take pause and remember Brent Benaschak, the founder of Whistlers’ Gay Ski Week. It was through Brent’s vision and passion for opening up and sharing our mountain home with people around the world to help make Whistler one of the most inclusive resorts on the planet. We are delighted to welcome an all-star cast to mark this special occasion. Award Winning Canadian Recording Artist KIM KUZMA slides us into the Welcome Party on Sunday, Jan. 22. The saucy – racey – and ever so bitchy International Air Hostess, PAM ANN touches down for our night of comedy in “Snow Landing”, on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Everyone gets hot and steamy at our annual SPLASH Pool-Party with DJ PACIFICO formerly known as DJ PORNSTAR (Las Vegas), performing on Thursday, Jan. 26. On Friday Jan 27 our Military Ball, FURROCIOUS Powered by SCRUFF heats up with DJ/ PRODUCER MICKY FRIEDMANN (Berlin) and renowned performance artist BRENT RAY FRASER. DJ BRET LAW (Seattle) launches our final night of celebration at SNOWBALL25, setting us up for the animated, floor shaking energy of one of the world’s top producing house music duos THE CUBE GUYS (Milan) at our Main Event on Saturday, Jan 28. We hope you will also take the opportunity to sample the many acclaimed and awardwinning hotels, restaurants, spas, galleries and activities that this Canadian mountain resort is known for. Thank YOU for playing your part in joining us in celebrating 25 fantastic years at Whistler. We deeply appreciate your choosing to vacation with us, and marking this occasion to honour diversity on and off the slopes… Dean Nelson Executive Producer Community Relations Sunil Sinha Executive Producer Entertainment & Operations

a letter from the prime minister It is with great honour that I welcome you to the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival, hosted by GayWhistler. Now in its 25th year, the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival has been an inclusive and diverse celebration of the unique culture and spirit of our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and Two-Spirited community in the unique and stunning setting of one of Canada’s most beautiful landscapes. Events likes this bring Canadians together to celebrate the rich diversity at the core of our national identity. In November, I was proud to announce the appointment of Randy Boissonault, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, as a Special Advisor on LGBTQ2 issues in recognition of our country’s responsibility to address historical and current discrimination against the community. While Canada has made real progress in affording members of our LGBTQ2 community respect, recognition and legal rights, we still have a lot of work to do, both at home and abroad. We must continue to support those who have experienced discrimination and remember that we cannot let up on the fight against bigotry. Thank you to the organizers of this amazing event for their dedication to promoting unity, inclusion and awareness of sexual and gender diversity. I wish to also extend my gratitude to the many volunteers whose enthusiasm and dedication ensure the success of this festival.
Justin Trudeau Prime Minister of Canada

a letter from the premier As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I am pleased to welcome everyone to the 25th Annual Whistler Pride and Ski Festival. This Festival has a great reputation for its exciting atmosphere, fun activities and lots of great camaraderie. This is one wonderful celebration of diversity and acceptance, and events like this show the world that our province is a welcoming and inclusive place to live, work, study, raise a family and have a lot of fun! Through the support of the Provincial Government and the Resort Municipality of Whistler, this year’s Whistler Pride and Ski Festival welcomes the legendary air hostess comedian Pam Ann to the Whistler Pride Night of Comedy. In addition to this amazing performance, there are other exhilarating social events and exciting alpine adventures to be had. It takes a great deal of hard work and dedication to prepare an event like this, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers and volunteers for their efforts toward making this Festival a success every year. I would also like to acknowledge the many guests who have come here from various countries around the world to be with us. Please accept my best wishes for a successful Whistler Pride and Ski Festival and I hope that everyone has a great time! Sincerely,
Christy Clark Premier of British Columbia
a letter from the mayor of whistler On behalf of the Resort Municipality of Whistler, welcome to the 25th annual Whistler Pride and Ski Festival from January 22 to 29, 2017. Congratulations on a quarter century of celebrating diversity and inclusion in this mountain resort. The iconic festival is a highlight on Whistler’s winter event calendar, attracting guests from British Columbia, Canada, America, Europe, Australia and beyond! The Resort Municipality of Whistler is pleased to support the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival though tourism funding from the Province of British Columbia. This year, our investment is in Snow Landing: Whistler Pride’s Night of Comedy—which features Pam Ann. Join us at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25 at the Whistler Conference Centre. Tickets are available online. We hope you enjoy the festival and have time to experience much of what Whistler has to offer – from the great variety of mountain terrain for skiing and snowboarding, to crosscountry trails, skating, and even sliding sports, as well as the variety of spas, restaurants, pubs, shops and entertainment throughout the Village. Whistler was the proud Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and I encourage you to have your own Olympic experience: cross-country ski at Whistler Olympic Park, watch or try sliding sports at the Whistler Sliding Centre, or go ice skating at Whistler Olympic Plaza in the heart of Whistler Village. Enjoy your visit!
Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden Resort Municipality of Whistler

LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO VANCOUVER OPENING PARTY
L es Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo make their anticipated return with a fresh batch of highbrow hilarity, January 20 and 21, 2017 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre! Brimming with awe-inspiring artistry and scintillating sauciness, this cross-dressing male cast have been making audiences laugh for more than 40 years with their affectionately irreverent tributes to the classical ballet canon. In their hotly-demanded return to the Vancouver stage, New York’s infamously all-male ballerinas will lovingly skewer such balletic favourites as Swan Lake, La Esmeralda, and Don Quixote with all of their histrionic drama and incessant pantomime. Don’t miss these international dance sensations showcase their extraordinary technical and hilarious prowess…on pointe in SIZE-12 ballet slippers!

Rescued boarder thanks community Whistler! Love you and take care out there.” Both rescuers and the community were elated when Abrahamsen, from Norway, was found alive and well about four to five kilometres from the Whistler Blackcomb boundary, on Saturday (Jan. 24). “It was a very joyous moment,” said Brad Sills, manager of Whistler Search and Rescue (WSAR), during a press conference on Saturday. “These moments are big for us because we don’t get enough of them, quite simply. The day after rescuers found her near Wedge Creek, Julie Abrahamsen logged on to her Facebook account to thank the community for its support during her harrowing ordeal in the backcountry. “After three rough days in the mountain, I have never been happier to be back in civilization and dear Whistler,” the 20-yearold snowboarder wrote on a popular Whistler Facebook page. “Thanks to my concerned dad, the best roomies, a good rescue staff, good doctors and all the friendly, caring, helping people/ seasoners of

faq Q ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL PERKS TO MY FULL WEEK OR WEEKEND PASS? A Yes, not only did you save some on the bundle pass, you get to use the express entry line at some of the busiest events and you have the flexibility of doing as much or as little as you want! It’s sort of like a Season Pass. You can also flash your pass to our retail partners and save or get a special gift! Q ARE THERE GAY SKI/SNOWBOARD GUIDES FOR ALL LEVELS OF SKIERS/RIDERS? A Yes, we have ski guides available every day for all levels of skiers & riders so come up and ski/ ride with your level group. There are also lesbian led groups! Q ARE TICKETS TRANSFERABLE OR REFUNDABLE? A Regrettably No. Q MY PARTNER AND I ARE LOOKING TO GET MARRIED. CAN WE DO THIS WHILE AT WHISTLER PRIDE? A Yes, we have several options available for you; just contact us at guest services. Q WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS TO GET BACK TO VANCOUVER? A We have several options for you, visit our website under “Plan Your Trip” or see us at guest services. Q IS IT TOO LATE TO VOLUNTEER? A No, come on down to the guest services suite and talk with our Volunteer Manager Karen or one of our volunteer leads. Q WHAT CAN I DO IF I DO NOT SKI OR SNOWBOARD? WILL I BE BORED? A There are hundreds of things for you to do and you will not be bored! Here are a couple examples: Sight See on Whistler & Blackcomb – Ride the Whistler Village Gondola and then take the Peak 2 Peak Gondola for a bird’s eye view of these massive mountains, take in one of the culinary or wellness seminars, go dog sledding or fly through the forest like a Jedi Knight or Indiana Jones with SuperFly Ziplines or luxuriate in one of the spas. Stop by our guest services desk for more ideas and suggestions! WhistlerPRIDE 2017 51
faq Q WHEN IS WHISTLER PRIDE 2018? A January 21-28, 2018 The host hotel, Aava Whistler. Remember to book by August 30th, 2017 for the best deal. Next deadline is Nov. 15th. Q WHY SHOULD WE BOOK THROUGH YOUR OFFICIAL BOOKING CHANNEL? A This is one of the only tools we have available to give accurate numbers to our resort partners in the success of the festival and ensure the continued value we are able to give to you, the consumer. The alternative to this is diminished support as it is unclear who is actually staying for the festival which may result in higher future costs and ties our hands as organizers what we can ask for in the future. There is the lowest price guarantee so you can be assured you are getting the best rate available. Q WHY DOES WHISTLER PRIDE LIMIT CAPACITY AND VENUE HOURS? A British Columbia has some of the most strict liquor laws in North America. Every year Whistler Pride has to apply and negotiate with the various government bodies which set limits to capacity, venue usage, hours of operation and type of entertainment. Q WHY ARE THE LIQUOR PRICES SO EXPENSIVE? A The resort and the government of British Columbia sets a minimum price drinks are allowed to be sold at. The venues keep 100% of all bar sales. Whistler Pride’s source of revenue is through ticket sales & sponsorship only. Q WHY DO WE HAVE TO PAY TO GO TO THE APRES SKI? A Admission for the Apres Ski events helps to pay for the complimentary ski/snowboard program as well as fund some of the other festival costs. The conference centre is still currently the only venue large enough to accommodate our group. The Apres ski also provides an opportunity for some of our community members to become involved with the festival to raise awareness about their organization while raising funds.

Uploading tip: All of Whistler Blackcomb’s RFID scanners will be located on your left hand side as you approach the lift. It is important that you keep your Access Card on the left hand side of your body. A pocket on your jacket is ideal given the height of the scanner. Keep your Access Card away from your cell phone or any aluminum, as it may interfere with the RFID chip.
