ala Mala is a documentary film following the lives primarily of a select group of transgender women, and other members of the LGBTQ community living on the island of Puerto Rico. This film follows these courageous men and women as they yearn to live their lives just like anyone else. What unfolds is a story of a movement for equal rights, human rights. We begin to see that what these protagonists seek are the same rights afforded to any human being; The right to work, autonomy, expression and freedom. What makes this film so interesting is that we see so many varying opinions as to what constitutes gender and identity. An interesting discussion is brought forth and what we see is a journey of self realization. The charm and message behind this film is that everyone has the unalienable right to identify as they wish. The LGBTQ community has received an incredible amount of new historic civil and human rights over this last decade. These rights, experienced first in major cities, are now beginning to be realized worldwide. We as human beings are not free as a people until human beings are free of oppression and discrimination everywhere. People are beginning to realize that all people should have the same rights. This film documented a necessary conversation. What drives the human spirit to live authentically? And how does one then begin this journey of self realization? As you watch this film it challenges you to live your own best authentic life. You leave this film feeling as if anything else besides living your life authentically is not truly living. This was a great directorial debut for Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles. We hope to see more thought provoking films such as Mala Mala in the near future. Mala Mala was an official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival 2014 and is expecting its theatrical release soon. http://tribecafilm.com/filmguide/53208acdc07f5df7d20006eb-mala-mala http://www.killerfilms.com
