THE LANDSCAPE OF LIFESTYLE IN BOTSWANA Like other cities of the world, Gaborone has become an epitome of modern day trends. Although moving at a slower pace as compared to other cities such as New York, London, Antwerp or even Johannesburg, Gaborone is none the less abuzz with trends from fashion, to nightlife, to gadgets and cars.

The term lifestyle carries different meanings. While others address it as a way of life, for some it represents a way of doing things and that way is usually influenced by one’s aspirations. “Lifestyle is simply all about the choices you make in how you live the life you want to live,” says Ewetse Khama, a Public Relations practitioner. Lame Malefho

O

ver the years, the word has come to play a huge role in the spending culture of Batswana. From independence on wards, there has been an increase in rural to urban migration; more and more Batswana aspire to a high end lifestyle. They are savvy to catch up with fashion trends, be seen driving the fastest cars and using the latest gadgets. Up market restaurants have become attractive and everyone wants to be noticed at events and own a home in the suburbs. Even though the landscape of lifestyle in Botswana has been described by others as ‘fractured’ and at times ‘confused’, the reality is that majority of Batswana are in the upper middle class bracket and they love to spend. There is a new breed of people who no longer identify with just a simple way of living. “The landscape of lifestyle has evolved a lot in the past years.

People now want to look good, they want to drive flashy fast cars and be seen at the best restaurants in town. In the early 2000s, people used to attend big events like Miss Botswana wearing track pants or even jeans and sneakers. Today, that has changed, the bar has been raised high in the sense that Batswana are making an effort to look good, commissioning designers to make them tuxedos and elegant dresses that they can wear just for one night spending close to P5000.00 for just a dress and a tux. That amongst other things says a lot about a person living in Botswana today,” says former Miss Botswana and lifestyle television show presenter Boingotlo Motlalekgosi. Another Calvin Bosilong, a Creative and Director at an Advertising Agency, Wow Factor says that, “majority of Batswana are middle class citizens and they can afford to buy into the concept of lifestyle and this is because the common thread that influences

trends is spending power. Today’s Motswana is big on spending and I feel as though our generation is going to be left in debt. There is a lot of urban migration, people have this idea that life in the city is beautiful, they have a perception about Gaborone which is why you will find that a lot of people are moving down here and aspiring to fit in and thus leaving beyond their means.” He goes on to say that, “Gaborone is fast becoming one of the most expensive cities to live in. Food prices are skyrocketing and so is the cost of living. You will find that majority of people living in the city are either renting or sharing with friends or they are still living with their parents but surprisingly driving fast expensive cars. Batswana have fully subscribed to this concept of lifestyle so at this point; we need trend forecasters to help guide us on where we need to put in our money as opposed to just spending with nothing guiding us.”

FAST CARS AND COOL TOYS Gaborone has fast become a modern day metropolis, garnering a reputation as one of Africa’s fastest growing cities. This reality has fast tracked the lifestyle of its plus four hundred thousand inhabitants into the modern era. Modiri Mogende

Gadgets are now available world wide; they are no longer limited to a certain country or continent. When a slick new device is released to the consumer capital of the world, it only takes a few weeks before it is spotted in the hands of someone walking the streets of Gaborone. The cell phone and i pad trend is one that many Batswana have caught on. One of the hand handle device that can be seen on the hands of many is Samsung’s latest Galaxy S4. One is able to use hand gestures and voice commands in its works. It has an amazing Amoled HD screen, which has an even better quality than those you get on your LED television. Another latest cell phone that can be spotted around town is the BlackBerry Z10. The Z10’s popularity is generally leveraged on the familiarity of the brand in the country. Many of its users have been using former high end models from the Canadian brand. Its predictive text and other bells and whistles also give it an edge. The world’s leading smartphone the Apple i phone has not managed to endow itself to the community here since its release, so it’s usually a rare sight. This was due to the data charges that came with owning it, thus making it way more expensive than the original sticker price. However, recently local mobile operators have introduced flexible data packages, so the Iphone 5 has entered the fray to constest for some consumer attention. The phone itself is something to lust for; it is slick and slim with a titanium feel and its glass finish just makes it a cool of device to own. One gadget that has taken refuge in the hands of young professionals in coffee shops and business conferences is the i pad. The current generation of the tablet is a great professional’s companion that keeps one on top of things as it organises your schedules and enables you to take a part of your office with you. The city is also awash with four wheeled machines that stride Gaborone’s roads. The trend has been largely to import ‘grey’ vehicles from the Far East for a much cheaper way of cruising the streets. Recently though, the focus has shifted to the United Kingdom where not only low end vehicles make it on the ship but also high end specs machines, so you will have your Toyota Run Xs, Mazda 3s, VW Golfs parked neatly next to Range Rovers, Mercedes Bens CLSs, BMW M3 among others on ships headed to the Durban and Walvis Bay ports with a final destination for Botswana. While the import business has been doing well in the last decade, brand new cars continue to be bought. The 2013 Mercedes Benz A class is one of the latest trending cars to own, especially for the young successful professionals. Its accentuated lines have been the heartthrob for a couple of people in the city as a few are already gracing the roads. The car comes into a segment that has been dominated by the VW Golf 6.

BA KAE?! WHERE ARE THEY NOW? From the old school nineties through into the new millennium, a certain group of artists ushered most of us into our teenage years and our twenties. Nostalgia fills our cups as we remember the first festival we attended, the local sounds of Brown sugar on RB2, Desma rapping alongside the legendary 3rd Mind.

M

any years have passed since then, but since memories do not live like people do, one can never cease to wonder, ‘where are they now?’ Gazette decided to take a trip down memory lane, dig up on some of Botswana music pioneers and find their whereabouts. This is what we found:

in the hip hop scene, only based in South Africa now. Nomadic recently released an album in February titled Letters to my countrymen working with new school hip hop artists like Sasa Klaas. Nomadic juggles his love for music with his other career as a designer and animator.

DIVINE MEETS ATTRACTIONS

Desma, the first lady of P-side and one of Botswana’s few recognized and respected female MCs, has now turned a new leaf, and is currently distant from the music industry. Desma, aka Ice Queen shared with Lapologa that she is happily a mother, living and loving life but above all that “Desma is serving God”. The Ice Queen whose story is a bitter sweet one, says that she didn’t only leave the music industry when she left the limelight, but also left Gabs to find herself, and she did; after surviving divorce and crime and coming to raise her beautiful son as a single mother. As for females wanting to make it in Botswana’s hip-hop scene, Desma urges them to be original at all times, and to remember that “your mouth can either build you or break you” so to watch their lyrical content in pursuit of success. “Trust yourself and leave it to God,” the Ice Queen says. Desma is now into motivational speaking imparting courage and wisdom to young women. She says to look out for a conference on ‘Women in Faith’ in 2014.

Yes, the afro-pop girl band sensations Divine and Unik Attractions, are making a comeback as a collabo’ group going by the stage name Divine Attractions. After vanishing from the music scene since their last performance in the year 2006, the all girl afro-pop band, Divine is winding up to set the entertainment scene on fire again. The group made of a two original members of the group Thuli and Micky will be joined by Unik Attractions’ Geel to complete the original trio. “When we started it was about the excitement of the limelight. But now we are more professional. ‘We are the three divas on stage. We are all confident and the audience knows all of us, which is the best feeling,” exclaimed Geel.

NOMADIC Conscious rapper that most of us know as Mr T of the P-side fame, now going by the name Nomadic, is still hip and relevant

DESMA

RAMCO

Music Maestro Eric Ramco, known for the greatest hits produced under his management with legendary artists such as 3rd Mind, Scar, Eskimos, internationally acclaimed cultural music band Matsieng and many others. Eric Ramco has since moved to SA, to find greener pastures, running Ramco SA a music and film production company based in Klerkdorp. Though he could not divulge any details, the very private Ramco made it clear that he is working on some projects that he can only reveal when the time is right.

BROWN SUGAR Brown Sugar. We heard these ladies’ voices every day on RB2, to many ladies then, the faces of independence, sassy and coolness. Thato Moahi, Tshidi and Monkgogi started their music career in their teens just when they were about to make a transition into young adulthood and unfortunately had to break away from the industry to pursue tertiary education, according to their manager and producer Solomon Bame Monyame, aka Solo B. The ladies have now branched onto other paths in life. Although not confirming if the ladies will ever unite, Solo B says they definitely still keep well in touch, reminisce about their Brown Sugar days and play around with the idea of reuniting. Whatever they decide, most of us will remember them with their hit albums Days Like This and Botho.

PARTY 101 Tips on how to party safely in Botswana

T

he winter season is over and the party season of the year; summer has just arrived. Even though it may feel absolutely right to go completely mad on a night out, having a wild time at night poses many dangers and The Gazette has come up with a few tips to help you party in style

Atlang Sebakile Flavored drinks like cocktails mask the taste of alcohol meaning that you can drink a few too many with out even realizing it. The alcohol in sparkling wine, beer, fizzy coolers and carbonated cock-tails is absorbed into your system faster than in noncarbonated drinks.

BEST TIPS TO SURVIVE A NIGHT OUT AND WHAT TO CARRY

3. Drink Lots of water:

For every glass of alcohol, compensate with a glass of water to keep your body hydrated. This will help you stay on your feet longer, allowing you to enjoy the party. Note: Botswana Gazette newspaper promotes safer sex and responsible alcohol consumption.

1. Wear breathable fabric: Selecting clothes to suit the weather is a good start and always bear in mind the dress code of the event or the night club you are going to unwind at. The worst thing that can happen is to find yourself wearing an evening dress matched with towering heels while everyone is dressed casually in jeans and simple t-shirts.”Instead of enjoying my first night out, I found myself glued to a chair because I was overdressed for a party,” remembered Shawn, a local socialite and fashion blogger. Remember to choose clothes that allow you to breath. According to Almond, a local budding fashion designer, linens are a great choice when partying in spring and summer

If you are going to drink, make sure it’s in the company of close friends that you trust. Likewise, do not leave your friend alone with complete strangers that you cannot rely on not to harm him/her. Watch one another as friends. Before you go out, agree on a few basic ground rules on what to do in case one of you over indulges.

6. Avoid free alcohol especially from strangers: On a night out, keep a close eye on your drink to avoid being drugged and should someone offer to buy you a drink, insist on going with them to the bar or politely decline. 7. Don’t drink and drive: Road accidents continue to claim lives of many drivers and passengers who drive under the influence of alcohol. The best option is to have someone else drop you at the venue and that someone must not be with you at the party (unless they are not drinking any alcoholic beverages.)If you are going to use a cab, opt to use a reputable registered company which will ensure you arrive home safely.

TIPS ON HOW TO PREVENT A HANG OVER 1. Don’t party on an empty stomach. Before you down your first shooter, have a proper meal, preferably a combination of carbohydrates, proteins. A grilled chicken sprinkled with cheese, fresh chips and vegetables makes a perfect pre-party snack. 2. Skip flavored drinks and anything bubbly:
