Getting those new wheels?
MODIRI MOGENDE
T

he time has come when companies pay out bonuses and the lucky ones will be getting a full 13th cheque. While bonuses are becoming a thing of the past, thanks to recession which now seems eternal,
there are still those fortunate enough to be working for profitable ventures that do not blink when it comes to rewarding hard work. Now, with that windfall, you may feel like the time has come for you to upgrade those wheels. There are many reasons why people buy new cars: for some it’s to upgrade
their status, some due to the growing needs of their families, while others may just be wanting some fun and probably the thrill of speed. This is where you need to start asking yourself why you need a new car, if you are thinking of going shopping. Research your needs first, interrogate your lifestyle and
establish what type of car you really need. Secondly look at your finances, ask yourself if you can actually afford in getting that car. Do not just check how much the bank can finance for, assess your daily financial needs and test if you can actually survive the resulting financial pressure. You also have to note that a car, especially a new one needs insurance; it also needs periodic maintenance or service; add petrol, wear and tear, it becomes a financial burden. The beauty of buying a vehicle today is that there is a lot on offer. Car segments seem to grow on a daily basis, meaning that consumers have greater choice of cars without compromising too much on preference. For instance, the C segment, which is made of small to midsized hatches in booming with almost all car brands having something to offer. Due to the fact that some of the German manufacturers which are known for high quality vehicles are also playing in this segment, it means that the rest of the industry has over the years been forced to up the quality, making it very competitive. When at the car dealership
The Botswana Gazette
look through the stock carefully. Assess the car and its exact specs and take several test drives to ensure fitness and comfortability. A lot of times the showroom has the most premier of models on display, this means that the cars are less likely to be base models and are fitted with several extras that make them look and drive better than a basic model. Here, one needs to be aware that most options on the car come with an added price tag. Likely things like sun or moon roofs, reverse cameras, park assist, navigation, are optional extras. In more luxury brands these can all add up and end up costing more than a quarter of the vehicle in value. Choosing a car to buy should take time, it’s a decision that you will have to live with every single day you drive it. For that reason, once you have set your eyes on a particular vehicle that fits your lifestyle, budget and overall wants, take your time, a day or two to think about it before making a final decision. Do not fall into the trap of being rushed that the car will be sold while you are mulling a decision, that is the usual car salesmanship that is intended to make you take the plunge without thinking! Happy car shopping and stay alert.

Modifying your ride
M
odifying a vehicle is an age old past time for many. Since the inception of the automobile, people have always wanted to make theirs unique, as such the best way to do that is to a few changes on the car, no matter how small. Car modifications have gotten more complex over the years. One can go from a small as adding spot lights to their front bumper, changing the alloy wheels to bigger, to as major as tuning the engine for greater performance. It is worth noting that when one decides to mod any car there are a few key things to look out for. Firstly, staying safe and legal is extremely important when modifying your car. It is essential to remember
that too many modifications can affect the road handling of your car. It could also put you on the wrong side of the law, risk your motor plan and perhaps your insurance policy cover. Lights or reflectors Headlamps must show a substantially white or yellow light. Rear position lamps must show a steady red light to the rear only. In other countries tint is highly regulated, blacked out tint is prohibited as its considered unsafe, so before you do get some, check the traffic act if there is any violation to the type of tint you want. If you can’t find anything, it’s safe to visit your local police station and ask. Wheels and tyres Changes
to
wheels
and
tyres can significantly alter your car’s behaviour on the road. Important points to consider when fitting bigger wheels and tyres is to ensure they are approved by the vehicle manufacturer provide adequate clearance between tyre and bodywork suspension. Modifications to the suspension which is the fitment of stiffer springs and lowering kits, should be only be done where the car’s road handling will not
be compromised. This work must be carried out by a competent engineer. Some old-school cars look amazing with totally low profiling, however note that this can significantly affect the safety of the vehicle over time. Exhaust system Exhaust mufflers have come a long way. In today’s world one can fit a muffler to a small engine vehicle to give it
the sound of a roaring V8. It is however important to note that when making your car go louder, your risk violating the penal code on noise pollution. It is also important to ensure that the any exhaust system modification is done by the right people because failure to do so can result is engine damage, which will be very costly to repair.

Car Insurance, a critical element of ownership
P
rotecting yourself at all time is a critical thing. Protecting your car is just as important, thus having vehicle insurance is probably the best thing one can do for themselves. Research has shown that more than half of the cars on our roads do not have any sort of insurance. The advent of second-hand grey imports mostly from Asia has meant that a lot of people are able to buy vehicles out of pocket without needing to finance through financial institutions. There are three types of car insurance that are usually available for car owners: comprehensive car insurance; third party, fire and theft cover; and third party cover. Comprehensive car
insurance: Comprehensive car insurance is the most extensive car insurance option available. You are covered for theft and hijacking, as well as any damage caused by weather conditions or accidents. Comprehensive car insurance also covers you if you are responsible for an accident and need to pay for damages sustained to another vehicle. It is the most expensive car insurance option available, but it is often well worth it. Third party, fire and theft cover: This type of car insurance is similar to comprehensive cover, except for the fact that it does not cover you if you accidentally damage your car. If your car is damaged or lost due to hijacking, weather conditions, or fire, then this type of insurance will have you covered. However, if
you are involved in a vehicle accident, or if you accidentally damage your car and it is within your control, then you would have to cover the repair or replacement costs of your own vehicle yourself. In the event of your car being damaged due to theft, fire or weather conditions, any third party involved will also be covered. Third Party Only cover: This type of car insurance will only cover any damage caused to another person’s vehicle (the third party), as
well as any injuries incurred by the third party involved in the accident. This option does not cover you against loss or damage to your own vehicle caused by accidents, fire or theft. This is therefore the cheapest of the three options. If your car is paid off or is of a relatively low value, then it may be a wise option to opt for the Third Party Only cover in order to avoid having to endure the costs of a third party’s expensive car repairs. According to the experts although it may be tempting
to opt for a cheaper type of car insurance such as Third Party Only cover, one needs to carefully weigh up the pros and cons. Although choosing a cheaper option may mean paying a lower premium, it could become very costly if you are involved in an accident and have to pay all of the repair and replacement costs out of your own pocket. Buying secondhand, what to look out for
A
ccording to the world largest online car sales site, Autotrader, the second-hand car market highly outpaces new car sales globally. This is due to several factors including, price, availability, high specs and the like. Given the complexity of buying a second-hand car, here are some tips to ensure you get the right deal. Define your budget and needs, be realistic about what you can afford and stick to your budget. Consider any repairs you may have to do and the increase in fuel cost if it’s very different to what you are currently driving. Think of your lifestyle and what you might need in terms of interior space, finishes etc. If you are doing a trade-in, find out what your car’s trade-in value is and never accept the first price. Different dealers offer different incentives like cash back. The ideal car to buy will be a demo model of 6 months to 1 year old, with mileage of 10 000 -15 000km. Keep your options open, Draw up a shortlist of desired cars. Don’t set your heart on only one model. With the advent on Asian and European imports on our shores, one has a lot of options to choose from. Do your research, “If you are interested in a certain model of car, read up about it in car magazines and online forums,” Autotrader advises. Never walk in blind, know the car
MOTORS
you are interested in, find out what it should feel like when driving and possible present and future faults. Most of this information is available online as car owners share on several platforms. Research maintenance and service of your desired vehicle. Ask a qualified mechanic or dealership what a typical service will cost if the car is no longer under a motor plan, which a lot of second-hand cars aren’t. Consider your location and whether you have easy access to service centres, certain brands are not present in Botswana thus finding parts and expertise for them can be a headache. Visit reputable dealers as there is a lot of fly by night dealerships of late. If you want to buy a car from a dealer, make sure it’s an established one. When buying from a reputable dealer with any future issues, you’ll have a better chance to have your car fixed at an established dealership. You will know that the car hasn’t been stolen and that you’ll have an up-to-date service history. Lastly, when doing money transactions, ensure that you have secured the vehicle and changed ownership immediately. Do not leave a chance of being swindled out of your hard-earned cash earned money by unscrupulous dealers.

n this sifted industry of car dealership where successful trading of business is solely dependent on the credibility of the dealer, U.S.S Motors has since its inception gratified Batswana in ensuring that they make a smart purchase of good quality vehicles accompanied with great after sales service with the renowned company. “It’s survival of the fittest, one who delivers good quality and good service will last in the business,” said Director of U.S.S Motors, Mohamed Rifai. Situated in Mogoditshane, U.S.S Motors provides all makes and models imported from the largest and leading automotive industry countries that include Japan, Singapore and the UK. These models range from trucks, sedan, SUV, Hatch back, MPV and Vans. “In Botswana, the most popular brands that sell are BMW and Toyota, the other brands do sell as well but not as popular as those two. BMW’s are mostly bought by gentlemen who like fast cars and Toyotas due to their vast offering are bought by everyone,” said Mohamed. Purchasing a car comes with a great deal of decisions to make and responsibilities to endure as one needs to look beyond the price tag. In terms of negotiations with the dealer, with good quality products on the brink, the price negotiation does however become indisputable. Much consideration such as test driving vehicles before purchase should be put into consideration as well as being wary of the condition of used cars. “In the case of a used car, it is better to bring along your mechanic to check and verify the condition of the vehicle, if you do not have one, you may request the dealer if you can take the desired car to an authorized mechanic to check vehicle for any possible faults,” explained Mohamed. Among all the car dealerships in the country and with only just two years in this industry, U.S.S Motors has emerged to be a quality-driven and reliable, trustworthy company. The car sales company has been offering up to par after sales services to customers that includes assistance on vehicle parts that may be or may not be available in the country.

Safety on the road during the festive season
I
ts festive season again! As we see out the end of the year, people get on the road to visit family and friends, while others take that much-needed holiday after a hectic 12 months. Before even starting your journey, take your vehicle into the garage for a full inspection, have a qualified mechanic check all the important bits of the car. Have your tires checked to ensure you still have enough tread to make your trip. If it is raining as the season has the kicked in and forecast is for greater rains this year, turn your headlights and windscreen wipers on. Try to reduce speed and try not to brake suddenly. Often there is oil and petrol on the road, which can cause you to skid out of control. If there is fog, reduce speed, turn headlights on low, or use fog lamps. Use the road markings or the edge of the road as a guide and be very alert for sudden looming obstacles. Avoid stopping on the highway and rather take the next off ramp to stop in a more public area where you can stretch, refresh yourself and/or take a break from driving; and have numbers for roadside assistance and other emergencies close at hand or saved in your cellphone, so that you are well-prepared for any eventuality.
as many breakdowns are caused by relatively minor problems. Items include a first aid kit, tow rope, warning triangles, torch and fire extinguisher. Be aware of pedestrians and animals on the open road specifically near more rural areas. The rain season usually results in domestic animals migrating from one place to another as they graze. It’s common to see them along the A1 and A3 roads, so pay extra attention especial at night. In the event of an accident, determine the extent of the damage or injuries and assess whether or not medical attention is required and contact 998 if an ambulance or assistance is needed. Take a picture with a camera or mobile phone and file an accident report with the police as you will need a case number for your insurance company to file a claim. Remember to get names, addresses, telephone numbers and ID numbers of everyone involved in the accident. If you are in a rental car you would need to notify the rental company to arrange help in organising a replacement vehicle. Make sure your car rental company has a hotline where you can get help. Tempest, for example, has a 24/7 emergency hotline where you can get assistance.
