The Expanse is an American science fiction television series developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, based on The Expanse series of novels by James S. A. Corey. The series is set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System, and follows a disparate band of antiheroes – United Nations Security Councilwoman Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), police detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), and ship’s officer James Holden (Steven Strait) and his crew – as they unknowingly unravel and place themselves at centre stage of a conspiracy which threatens the system’s fragile state of Cold War-esque peace, the socioeconomic balance, and the survival of humanity everywhere.

Hundreds of years in the future, in a colonized Solar System, police detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), born on Ceres in the asteroid belt, is assigned to find a missing young woman, Juliette “Julie” Andromeda Mao (Florence Faivre). James Holden (Steven Strait), the Executive Officer of the ice hauler Canterbury, is involved in a tragic incident that threatens to destabilize the uneasy peace between Earth, Mars and the Belt. On Earth, Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), a United Nations executive, works to prevent war between Earth and Mars by any means necessary. Soon, the three find out that the missing woman and the ice hauler’s fate are part of a vast conspiracy that threatens humanity. Earth Earth, also known as Terra, is the third planet of the Sol system, and one of its four terrestrial worlds. Home-world of humanity, Earth is the greatest hub of human politics and, technically, still is the capital planet of the dominant superpower, the United Nations. It has always been at the forefront of human history. Prior to the attack launched by the Free Navy in 16 XTE, Earth was the most populous planet inhabited by humans, hosting approximately thirty billion people. The orbital bombardment left the planet’s infrastructure and environment crippled, with many residents, including officials of the UN government, resorting to immediate evacuation. In the wake of the Free Navy Conflict, a part of Earth’s inhabitants chose to return to the planet and begin the rebuilding process. However, the population remains at a far lower figure than antebellum

United Nations, reticent to cede their control over Mars, refused. It was only thanks to Solomon Epstein and his groundbreaking invention, the Epstein drive, that war was avoided. The colonial government offered the UN access to the revolutionary drive in exchange for independence. To avoid Mars having a tactical advantage, the UN agreed.

Her Excellency, Chrisjen Avasarala is the current Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Recent Hystory By the mid and late 21st century, humanity’s national governments, under the auspices of the United Nations, then simply a supranational organization, but with considerably more power than at its inception, had begun to establish colonies on the other planets in the Sol system, the most notable of these being Luna and Mars. However, after continuous success and because of the precarious state of Earth’s ecosystem due to extensive pollution, nations decided to relinquish their national governing rights and make the UN into a global, unified government. Eventually, in the 22nd century, the colonial government that administered humanity’s first colony demanded that they be independent. The

For the next century and a third, the United Nations and its newly proclaimed rival, the Martian Congressional Republic, often competed over living standards, technology, and military strength. However, no true conflict erupted between the two superpowers, and relations kept a decent level of cordiality. After both nations had access to the drive and were able to mass-produce it, humanity expanded beyond the confines of the inner Sol system and began establishing outposts on asteroids of the Asteroid Belt, such as Eros and Ceres, eventually reaching the moons of the gas giants, such as Io, Ganymede, Europa, and more distant ones, such as Titan and Titania. One outpost in particular, Ganymede, began to gain prominence, having had orbital mirrors constructed to direct sunlight for crop-growing. Prior to the Ganymede incident, the Jovian moon was regarded as the breadbasket of the outer planets. Until the discovery of the protomolecule roughly eight years prior to the Eros incident, the UN and the MCR remained neutral one towards the other, but continuously oppressed their colonies’ inhabitants in the Belt and outer planets.

Small insurrections started taking place, but were quickly stifled. This authoritarian process continued, which led to the formation of the Outer Planets Alliance, a multi-movement organization which sought the independence of the Belt and outer planets from Earth. Called ‘terrorist’ by both Mars and Earth, the organization saw itself opposed by the two superpowers. Eventually, through Tycho Station, Fred Johnson, a former UNN marine, became the OPA’s de facto leader and spokesperson. Around mid-24th century, the Martian government issued a project regarding the exploration and eventual exploitation of Phoebe for raw materials, mostly water. Their finding there prompted Mars to prolong research regarding the Saturn moon, establishing a decently large laboratory. They sought partnership with Protogen, a mega-corporation owned by Jules-Pierre Mao. Ultimately, they concluded that the pathogen found there - in the meantime dubbed the Protomolecule, or the ‘Phoebe bug’ - was extra-solar in origin and must have been implanted there by an alien civilization. The Martian government saw this as an opportunity to finally gain the upper hand over Earth and the UN.dying. The later death of the remaining human-Protomolecule hybrids determined the Protomolecule to launch a 1,000km wide Ring two astronomical units outside of Uranus’ orbit. The Ring proved to be an artificially sustained usable wormhole, capable of transporting ships to a hub of other Rings, each leading to a different system. This enlarged humanity’s horizons, finally uplifting the species to the interstellar scale .

The United Nation Navy The United Nations Navy (UNN) is the naval branch of the United Nations military. It is considered less technologically advanced than its Martian counterpart, the Martian Congressional Republic Navy, but has the largest fleet in Sol system and is considered to be overall superior. In 16 XTE, the United Nations Navy was absorbed into the Consolidated Fleet, which, in turn, waged war against the Free Navy during the Free Navy Conflict.

in the outskirts of New York

The exact structure and ranking system of the United Nations Navy remain largely unknown. However, according to on-screen information, the UNN is headed by the Fleet Commander (a 4- or 5-stripe Admiral), who is the seniormost member of the Navy and has a seat in the United Nations Security Council. The Navy itself is divided into several permanent fleets, each commanded by an Admiral. Each fleet has its assigned area of responsibility. For example, Third Fleet’s area of responsibility is Jupiter and its moons; hence, it’s known as the “Jupiter Fleet”. However, in times of war, this division becomes rather fluid. For the purpose of executing various missions, the Navy creates temporary units of lesser size, which may consist of ships from different fleets - these units are called Task Forces. The example is Thomas Princes Task Force - a unit of UNN which was created for the sole purpose of traveling to the Ring, and later into the Slow Zone itself. UNN rank structure is somehow unclear due to noticeable differences between that and 21st century Navy rank insignias but, it generally resembles the structure and insignias of western nations’ navies.

The United Nation Marine Corp The United Nations Marine Corps (UNMC) is the ground forces branch of the United Nations military. Well trained and equipped, they serve on Earth and aboard UNN ships and stations. Like their Martian counterparts, UN Marines use powered, vacuum-rated armor, operate in a variety of combat environments, and utilize a variety of weapons and tactics.

Mars Sol IV Mars is the fourth planet from Sol and the second smallest planet in the Sol system. It has a population of nine billion humans and is governed by the Martian Congressional Republic.

History Originally a colony of Earth settlers, about three generations after the first colonists dug in to the rock and soil, making Mars humanity’s second home, the colonists began to get restless. While dependent on Earth for some supplies, Mars was largely self-sustaining. It was also becoming a leader in environmental science and research as well as the design and manufacture of a new generation of spaceships. Many of the colonists of that period wanted to secede from the rule of Earth, and compared their plight to that of the American colonies in the 1700s. Two major events almost led the two planets to war. The first happened when a group of secessionists published their manifesto, leading the UN to invoke the 'breakaway province rule' and launch forty ships towards Mars. Negotiations behind the scenes eventually cooled things down,

and the ships turned around and headed back to Earth. The other major incident came when the United Nations issued a statement that all future Martian ships would be contracted through the Bush Orbital Shipyards on Luna. The Martian government didn't even reply to that request and work at the shipyard continued. The UN then ordered that all shipyards on Mars shut down until an inspection team could be sent out there, but it would take them seven months to get a team together, and another six to make the journey to Mars (due to the planets' positions at the time). Once again, this request was ignored.[1] Rumors of war started up once again, and if not for Solomon Epstein and his accidental invention of what would come to be called the Epstein Drive, war between the planet and its colony may have been inevitable.

After Solomon invented the Epstein Drive (and lost his life on the initial test flight, due to the unprecedented power), Mars had a major technological advantage over Earth. The new ships could go further and faster than anything that had been built before, while using significantly less fuel, opening up the rest of the solar system for exploration and settlement. The colonial Martian government reached out to the UN and offered them access to the Epstein Drive in exchange for granting Mars its sovereignty.

However, it is implied that the project is in decline, due to younger generations of Martians becoming accustomed to living in domed settlements.

After being granted the right to rule itself, Mars formed the Martian Congressional Republic to serve as the governing body of the people of Mars, as well as the Martian Congressional Republic Navy to serve as the military arm of the government. The Martian Congressional Republic Navy and

The Asteroid Belt. also known as the Main Asteroid Belt as means to distinguish it from the Kuiper Belt, often referred to as just The Belt, is a circumstellar disc located in the region of the Sol system between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter. It consists of numerous asteroids and is part of the "outer planets" political region.

Astrographical information System

Human colonization The Belt was colonized by humans roughly 150 BXT. The humans who are born in the Belt, called Belters, are taller and thinner than humans from the inner planets Earth and Mars due to the lower gravity, and also have larger heads. While the population of the Belt is around 50 million according to official inner planet censuses, other sources such as the Outer Planets Alliance claim the actual figure is near 100 million.

Belters Humans born in the Belt are taller and thinner than those on Earth and Mars, standing 2-2.5 meters tall, and have brittle bones from growing up in low gravity. As a consequence, they cannot survive in Earth's gravity for very long. However, Belters recover faster than Earthers after periods of high-G. These physical differences along with cultural and language difference cause Belters to be dehumanized and regarded as second-class citizens by many Earth and Mars residents, since they superficially seem to be a deviation from the species norms of humans.

Belter

Belters speak Belter Creole, a patรณis of the languages spoken by the original settlers of the Belt. Depending on the social status of the speaker, this can be nearly impossible for non-Belters to understand. They also have a variety of physical gestures not shared by people from the inner planets, due to the need for nonverbal communication during spacewalks.

Ceres (designated 1 Ceres) is the largest known asteroid (nine hundred fifty-five kilometers in diameter), the only dwarf planet in the inner solar system, and the first asteroid discovered by humanity. It lies in the asteroid belt.

Canterbury, a space freighter en route to Ceres Station

Ceres is the site of Ceres station, a space station that was one of the first sites of human colonization. Half a generation after humanity arrived there, Tycho Manufacturing managed to spin up the asteroid, which gave it a gravity of 0.3 g. The station has tens of thousands of kilometers of tunnels. As the most important port in the Belt, the station has a population of approximately six million permanent residents with an extra one million transiting through at any given time. Eight hundred to a thousand ships are docked on Ceres every day. Ceres was governed by Earth, and station security was handled by the private security firm Star Helix Security. The gravity on Ceres is not provided by its own mass but is spin gravity. The level of gravity changes with each level and there is a noticeable Coriolis Effect. Transportation is provided by an extensive tube train network

Vesta Vesta (designation 4 Vesta) is one of the largest asteroids in the Asteroid Belt, and the second-most-massive after Ceres. It hosts one of the largest settlements in the outer planets. At some time during the UNMCR Cold War, Vesta was the site of the Vesta Blockade, a confrontation between the UN and MCR that would delay the Martian terraforming efforts for over a century.

Eros (designation 433 Eros) is a large, S-type, near-Earth asteroid approximately 34.4×11.2×11.2 kilometers (21.4×7.0×7.0 mi) in size. It is the second-largest near-Earth asteroid. It's a part of the Asteroid Belt, but its called a "MarsCrosser" because its orbit crosses the orbit of Mars. It is the first known asteroid to come within the orbit of Mars. Eros has been compared to the shape of a lumpy potato. A very large lumpy potato that would wipe out all but the simplest forms of life on Earth if it hit it. Eros is the site of Eros Station, a space station that was one of the first sites of human colonization, and which by the time of Leviathan Wakes supports a population of one and a half million humans (a little more than Ceres had in visitors at any given time). Roughly the shape of a potato, it had been much more difficult to spin up, and its surface velocity was considerably higher than Ceres' for the same internal g. The internal caverns of Eros had been the birthplace of the Belt. From raw ore to smelting furnace to annealing platform and then into the spines of water haulers and gas harvesters and prospecting ships. Eros had been a port of call in the first generation of humanity’s expansion. From there, the sun itself was only a bright star among billions. The economics of the Belt had then moved on. Ceres Station had spun up with newer docks, more industrial backing, more people.

The commerce of shipping moved to Ceres, while Eros remained a center of ship manufacture and repair. On Ceres, a longer time in dock meant lost money, and the berth fee structure reflected that. On Eros, a ship might wait for weeks or months without impeding the flow of traffic. If a crew wanted a place to relax, to stretch, to get away from one another for a while, Eros was the port of call. And with the lower docking fees, Eros Station found other ways to soak money from its visitors: Casinos. Brothels. Shooting galleries. .

Anderson Station. Anderson Station was a remote ore refinery station owned and operated by the Anderson-Hyosung Cooperative Industries Group at the far end of the colonized Belt, almost at the opposite side from the major port Ceres, with a population of over ten thousand. The station was owned and operated by the Anderson-Hyosung Cooperative Industries Group, and specialized in refining ores mined from various asteroids in The Belt.

Tycho station. Tycho station is the largest mobile construction platform in the Sol system, and the Belt headquarters of Tycho Manufacturing and Engineering Concern and, covertly, the Outer Planets Alliance. Tycho Station, the Belt headquarters of the company, was a massive ring station built around a sphere half a kilometer across, with more than sixty-five million cubic meters of manufacturing and storage space inside. The two counter-rotating habitation rings that circled the sphere had enough space for fifteen thousand workers and their families. The top of the manufacturing sphere was festooned with half a dozen massive construction waldoes that looked like they could rip a heavy freighter in half. The bottom of the sphere had a bulbous projection fifty meters across, which housed a capital-ship-class fusion reactor and drive system, making Tycho Station the largest mobile construction platform in the solar system. Each compartment within the massive rings was built on a swivel system that allowed the chambers to reorient to thrust gravity when the rings stopped spinning and the station flew to its next work location. Tycho makes regular campaign contributions to Earth and Mars politicians. If anyone were to attack the station, half of the United Nations assembly and all the Martian Congress would be howling for blood making Tycho Station the safest place in the Belt.

Pallas: Pallas (designation 2 Pallas) is the third largest asteroid in the Asteroid Belt, and the second asteroid discovered by humanity. It hosts one of the oldest stations, Pallas Station, in the outer planets, but is also known for a revolt at its colony. The station itself has a long history of a refinement station for the mining operations of the Belt. Due to this legacy, it continues to have its infrastructure maintained and upgraded, making use of its older equipment as overflow capacity. This prominence can be seen by the fact that the first Ilusian shipment of lithium was sent to Pallas in 14 XTE.
