Today we are a national, not-for-profit organisation that works with our members towards a common goal — to transform Australia’s built environment into one that is healthy, liveable, productive, resilient and sustainable.

Why our goals are important Buildings provide many benefits, including our most basic need for shelter. They also have significant impacts on our environment, health and quality of life. Globally, buildings account for around 30% of total energy use and 19% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Construction consumes large quantities of natural resources and can result in the loss of biodiversity. While our time spent indoors can be impacted by harmful materials and lack of natural light or ventilation. Fortunately, it’s also one of the areas where we can create positive change. The GBCA provides leadership to drive continuous improvement of building practices and create sustainable places for everyone.

What we do To achieve our goals, we focus on three areas: we rate, educate and advocate.
Rate We certify projects through Australia’s only voluntary, holistic rating system for sustainable buildings, fitouts and communities — Green Star.
Educate We educate people on how to design and deliver sustainable outcomes for our buildings, fitouts and communities.
Advocate We advocate for policies and programs that support our mission and work with industry and government to achieve these goals.
