ROTARY WATER ALERT I commend Rotarian George Lewis ‘s enormous campaign for water grants and generous fund support activism. He maintained this doggedly in a linkedin online sub group - I Love Rotary. I wish his empathy to ensure water adequacy in all needy areas can be met by continually pulling resources of individuals, clubs and donor agencies to provide this basic amenity for sanitation for all. Clean water is basic to the efficient biochemical working of our body tissues and organ systems –not just now and then but on a regular basis. Neglect is epidemiologically expensive.It has been confirmed by experts that a daily regular intake of copious clean water depending on individual s body-mass – index improves detoxication and susceptibility to cancer.As much as we need socio –political peace --sanitary living is also a necessary condition for environmental wellbeing and ecological harmony. The world need to be free of cholera and helminth diseases. It's a shame that more than half the world s 6 billion plus population is living below hygienic standard in the 21st century. Thanks for Rotary 's water project alert and support. According to water experts –only a comparative teaspoon of water is drinkable out of a gallon available world water. The rest must be appropriately treated to be of any use to humanity. I love Rotary the more for doing fine in the areas of water projects in almost all developing countries and overcrowded cities where water supply is inadequate. Surely the United Nations World Water /Sanitation decade of the 80s didn’t meet its intended target-probably the time frame is too short for such a gigantic coverage. I suggest a PPP approach to solve water problems –geology (access from the ground), treatment, distribution and management. Water extension worker s will b e needed in developing countries .This will avoid ‘anything goes drinking in times of disaster or outright lack due to flood or aridity elsewhere . Rotary ‘s Israel conference barely two years ago in collaboration with some Canadian water engineers should yield more water as more water workers are trained for global service .Thanks for this timely concern for adequate water/sanitation support by Rotarian Action Group on water and sanitation. Your concern isn’t glossed over. Throw a wider net because a maze of rural and urban population in Africa -Nigeria inclusive- has no access to potable water and enough quantity for sanitation. The needless frequent floods are worsening the situation reinforcing cholera outbreak.
It’s developmentally engaging yet very challenging for us all in Africa -especially the need to maintain membership mood for continuity, to strategically plan for more club replications in rural and urban areas of our cities and urban poor of our countries. We should be conscious of the importance of maintaining goodwill and
establish rapport with all NGOs, charity groups, companies that are steadily producing or rendering services to the community and have a good CSR policy which gives back --show humanitarian concern to the community that permits her registration and operation. This way active thinking Rotarians,Rotians and ROTA-members on the list of newsletter should consider these basics as opportunity for springing up more clubs in Africa. Our Dear George Lewis, the Water Man ...Your daring for grants to implement water projects in Peru & Guatemala is welcome and very much in order BUT what if I confess to you that a borehole repair issue has just been tackled in my estate of less than 100 people where I lodged in Ibadan ,Oyo State of Nigeria-- endowed with 42 natural springs and yet only 6 are engaged for water supply for a population of 5 million. We aren't even yet privileged to use water by World Health Standard we are requesting for basic potable water for living and for sanitation to ensure a healthy hygienic state. A popular adage says cleanliness is next to godliness. This is a luxury here. But we must do our own part. We must ASK and REPORT the extent of the problem. I purposely hope well-meaning clubs and donors will write proposal for water project in these communities highly susceptible to water -borne diseases as evident in recent cholera outbreak in some cities in Benue . and south west Nigeria whereas they are predictable and avoidable flood disasters .We also hope Rotary will help engage the use of GSI â&#x20AC;&#x201C;geographic In formation Systems to facilitate a wholesome coverage of hamlets and settlements that might otherwise be glossed over! We need clubs committees and presidents and TRF Chairs to write proposals for in house fund raising as well as TRF GRANTS TO PROVIDE WATER FOR THE COMMUNITIES in dire need of water. Remember two American clubs twined to help two Guyana villages in South America years back to provide water( Rotarian Jan 2009,Letters) Before people must give to support a course -there must be an existing project or budgeted write up such as these Peru communities. We need such tabled problems here in a 23-state sized D9125 -with which fund raising canvassed from the communities and partner clubs could support-- if we are to solve water /sanitation conditions gradually yet progressively evaluate coverage and reduction in sanitary related diseases and environmental aesthetics that befit modernity. Maybe I' m too basic... but the reality is that proposals are scanty yet the problem is endemic and needs solution. More than 60% of Nigerians have no access to potable water yet we have dams all over the regions. Rotary is very visionary and practical at identifying crucial amenities assessed needed which local technocrats or governance overlook! The Federal Government o f Nigeria is working on this state of scanty access but who knows when this will actualise water to the taps and kitchen. An NTA TUESDAY panel broadcast tackled this earlier in the year,2013.Let s hope it will ginger whatever Rotary clubs and global water activists including George Lewis would be doing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hopefully to
our delight in the 3 Rotary Districts in Nigeria and global health.. Now that RI Pilot New Membership Initiative will bring forth more expertise, resources and friendship from Satelite,Corporate and Associate clubs there s light in the tunnel to synergise dynamism for effective living and holistic care of the less privileged of the world.
