Resiliency and civic pride are hallmarks of Rozel, an active town of 128 residents 17 miles west of Larned.

Rozel mayor Erin Josefi ak noted the town has several active civic organizations, making Rozel a very vibrant and proud small community.

Th e Rozel PRIDE organization, for example, has undertaken several projects, including updating the town fi tness center, adding a library and public computer stations in City Hall, and is looking at raising money to improve the playground, among other town beautifi cation projects. Th e Lions Club holds several scholarship fundraisers each year, including a soup supper and pancake breakfasts. Th ey also partner with the town’s volunteer fi re department to host a Christmas parade and celebration each year.

Th e town is also home to an active 4-H club, which has consolidated with the nearby town of Burdett. Th e group participates in several community service projects each year.

Beyond the civic organizations, Josefi ak says residents are very active, take a lot of pride in the community and “wear a lot of hats”, and says that is crucial to life in a small town.

It is situated on the Jetmore branch of the Santa Fe Railroad, formerly the Chicago, Kansas and Western R.R.

Th e original townsite was deeded to the Arkansas Valley Town and Land Company by the railroad on July 19, 1886. Th e name Rozel was selected in honor of a daughter of one of the founders of the Land Company, whose name was Rozella.

Since it was incorporated, the town has persevered through multiple natural disasters, including a fi re and a tornado.

Rozel is the hometown of K-State alumnus and Texas Christian University head football coach Gary Patterson.

It was incorporated Nov. 29, 1929, and has a mayor-council form of city government with water and gas systems municipally owned. It is home to the consolidated Pawnee Heights USD 496.
