AWESOME ALUMNI: VIRTUAL CLASSES

Jon Bostock '99 spoke to students about his career as co-founder and CEO of Truman's.

Virtual Classes Breed New Volunteer Opportunities

WHEN DECIDING WHAT HER 3-week Business Ethics course was going to look like, Professor Betty Kane always knew that she wanted to include alumni. Once it was decided Guilford College would have to go virtual due to COVID-19, though, alumni involvement became an even more crucial part of Betty’s classroom structure. The repetition that sometimes comes with all virtual learning was aided by real life career journeys from Guilford alumni and past parents.

Starting off the guest speakers was Jon Bostock ‘99. Jon has had an incredible career as Co-founder and CEO of Truman’s, a revolutionary cleaning supply company that focuses on sustainability.

Chidi Akwari '02

Following Jon was Chidi Akwari ‘02. Chidi is local to Greensboro and is the owner of Akwari & Co. LLC, a premier real estate company. Chidi’s presentation was fascinating not only because of his massive success, but also in the way he showed that not all career journeys look the same.

Lastly, Michael Reiney ‘17 joined his father Mike Reiney and virtually interviewed his father for the class. Until 2016 Mike was a Vice President at Qualitest Pharmaceuticals. Since the pharmaceutical industry is so often villainized, his voice was appreciated in a business ethics classroom setting.

During this challenging time, Guilford College volunteers have stepped up in a big way, making sure students are still hearing from diverse groups of people and virtual classrooms are just as engaging as in-person lectures.
