Entering the 1999 campaign, expectations were through the roof. Collegiate Baseball Magazine ranked the Broncbusters 13th in their preseason poll, putting even more pressure on second-year Head Coach Jeff Curtis. And maybe all of that talk got to Garden City early on. The brown and gold stumbled out of the blocks, going 16-19 in their first 35 games, turning a once-promising season into a lost year. “We were all over the place the first half of the year,” said assistant coach Jay Gundy, who was the starting left fielder on the ‘99 team. “But once we got things together, we started rolling.” Whatever ailed the Broncbusters in the first month and a half of the season, was completely eradicated. Garden City won 16 of their next 21 games, including a 13-7 victory over Seward County in the West Sub-Region Championship Game. “Once we beat Seward, we wanted Cowley,” Gundy said. The Tigers swept Garden City the year before; then rolled to the National Championship. But in 1999, Cowley never made it that far. Instead, Neosho knocked them off, setting up a showdown with the Broncbusters. “We were in some kind of rhythm at that point,” Gundy said. “That team could flat out hit.” Garden City annihilated Neosho 22-3 and 14-7 in the Region Title game, sending the Broncbusters to Grand Junction for the first time in program history. After a two-week break, Curtis’ team bowed out quickly, losing to Wallace State, AL., a 40-win club, in the first round before falling to Muscatine, IA in an elimination game, 8-6.
“
I’m not going to say we were going to win the World Series, but I think if we were healthy, and didn’t have such a long break, we would have put a scare into some teams.
”
-Jay Gundy (Outfielder)

2014: Alitz is the nation’s best
Tyler Alitz was already a household name in his native Nebraska. So 2014 was no surprise. The sophomore became the best shortstop in the nation, turning 13 double plays, recording 88 putouts and tallying a .949 fielding percentage. He was named the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year. Tragically, just weeks after the season ended, Alitz was killed in a car crash. He had signed with Morehead State.

1981: Bascue sets home run mark Kevin Bascue’s magical two-year career in Garden City began with a video-game like 1981. He smashed a program record 26 home runs. He followed that up with 24 during his sophomore campaign. And to this day, he is still the career and single-season record holder for most long balls.

1999: GRAND JUNCTION BOUND!! Following a 16-19 start, the Broncbusters won 16 of their next 21 games, beating Seward County in the Sub Region Championship before taking out Neosho in two-game sweep in the Region VI Championship. However, that magical run ended in the Junior College World Series when Garden City lost to Wallace State and Muscatine, IA.

baseball Williams Stadium has ever witnessed. The Busters won game one in dramatic fashion with a 10-9 walk-off win; then proceeded to drop game two 10-9 with Fort Scott rallying late. Garden City responded in the rubber match winning 8-4. The Busters dropped game one to Cowley County in the Region VI tournament, the eventual winner. The 2016 team would not go quietly in the doubleelimination tournament, defeating Coffeyville 10-0 and Kansas City Kansas 7-2 before being eliminated in the final four. That team was not only successful on the field, but also in the classroom. Finnegan’s Busters had a team GPA of 3.25 on the year and had six players earn academic AllAmerican honors.
In 2016, Finnegan led the Busters to a 45-17 record and a third-place finish in the Jayhawk West Conference. The 45- win mark tied Finnegan’s best mark as head coach. With a third-place finish, the Busters hosted Fort Scott in the sub-regional. The series provided some of the best

A NEW FOCUS
If you have followed Broncbuster baseball since Chris Finnegan’s arrival as a shortterm assistant; then the team’s full-time manager in 2006, you know, year in and year out, the program has been a model of consistency. He’s guided Garden City to winning seasons in 11 out of his first 14 years. Four times, the Broncbusters have won 40 or more games, and four times, they have made it to the Region VI final four, falling one game shy of the World Series in 2007.
the conference. Their bullpen, which in years past was such a strength, was more of an Achilles heel. Those relievers tallied a 7.25 ERA, giving up a season-worst 12 runs vs. Barton. In fact, 17 times, the pen surrendered three or more runs.
But last year was the outlier; the anomaly that most coaches endure during such a long tenure. The 2019 campaign marked the first time under Finnegan’s watch that the Broncbusters finished with losing records in back-to-back seasons.
To help remedy some of those pitching woes, Finnegan hired former Northern Colorado pitching ace Justin Mulvaney to help with the staff.
“At this level, you have to have guys who can get outs out of the bullpen,” Finnegan said. “We gave up way too many leads this year, and it’s because they were so inconsistent.”
Most of the teams that finished towards the top of the league last year, all had something in common: at least two quality starters and a deep bullpen, two areas where Garden City was really inconsistent. The Broncbusters posted a 6.15 ERA, which was the fifth highest in
86
Figuring into the starting rotation has to be Malachi Crone and Connery O’Donnell, two returners from last year. Crone was arguably Finnegan’s second best pitcher, winning six of his 11 starts, while striking out 56 in 64 innings. He posted a 4.76 ERA.
That’s a major key, considering O’Donnell really struggled in the second half of last season. His low point was Apr. 27 vs. Cloud where he allowed nine runs on three hits and never made it out of the third inning in a 22-2 loss. But there were plenty of highlights including a sevenstrikeout performance vs. Barton and a one-hit shutout in a win against Western Nebraska.
Garden City closed last season by losing eight straight games, including a sweep at the hands of Johnson County in the opening round of the Region Tournament. Yet, things started out so well. Finnegan’s bunch won 10 out of their first 11 and were 12-3 entering conference play on Mar. 8. But they lost all four to Barton to begin the league year. After taking three of four from Dodge, including a comeback from eight runs down, the Broncbusters managed to win just one series the rest of the way, finishing seventh in the Jayhawk West.
THE RIGHT PIECES
“We’ve got a lot of guys who can do different things on the mound,” Finnegan said. “We are still trying to figure out who our main guys will be at the top.”
“Malachi should be ready to roll,” Finnegan added. “Connery is back to the guy who we signed at the beginning of last year.”
“It’s really unacceptable with the standard that we’ve set here,” Finnegan said. “We’ve been through plenty of ups and downs over the years, but we have to be better.”
“There were a lot of things that cost us this year,” Finnegan said following his team’s postseason exit. “But we will get back to work and get this thing right.”
pretty nice piece, this after posting a 1.27 ERA in 55 innings, leading Faith Christian to a state championship. He struck out 86 while opponents hit just .192 off of him.
“He (O’Donnell) looks pretty good,” Finnegan said. “Obviously, we’ll see.”
Jordan Yates
A mix of some lefty talent should also help. Garden City had just one southpaw, Jordan Yates, on the roster. This year, they have two, Raul Garcia, a freshman from Puerto Rico, and first-year hurler Michael Thorne, who missed his senior season after having ankle surgery. But even with a year off, Thorne is expected to be a
The other guys vying for a spot in the rotation are Raul Garcia, another lefty from Puerto Rico, Rhett Halstead, a freshman who missed all of last season with a shoulder injury, and Nayton Agosto, a guy with pretty filthy stuff who is still figuring things out. “We don’t know what his (Agosto’s) best pitch is just yet,” Finnegan said with a smile. “But he has a chance to be pretty good.” Damian Acosta has a chance to be in the mix after showing some positive signs in 2019. In eight appearances, he posted a 5.84 ERA with 11 strikeouts. He tossed
back-to-back scoreless games vs. Frank Phillips and Seward County. But there was still a pretty steep learning curve for the freshman, who spent a year after high school at Georgetown Prep. He allowed a home run in each of his last two appearances. This year, look for a much improved array of pitches from Acosta, including his slider, which is said to have more depth than 12 months ago. “Just like the other guys, Damian can throw it,” Finnegan said. “But we aren’t sure, just like with our other guys, whether he is a starting guy or someone that comes out of the pen.”
SITUATIONAL BASEBALL Garden City began last year with an infusion of power. They hit six home runs in their first four games, which had some thinking it was 2016 all over again. That year, the Broncbusters finished with 59 long balls-good for 39th in the country. That squad also featured six guys who had seven or more bombs. But unlike the team from three years earlier, Finnegan’s boys couldn’t sustain those offensive pyrotechnics. They had just 18 homers over their final 47 games, and only one player, Corbin Truslow, had more than five (he finished with 11).
GOBRONCBUSTERS.COM
just .277 collectively, fifth lowest in the conference. This year, don’t expect anyone to take aim at the NJCAA home run crown. Instead, the Broncbusters will be a more balanced team. Brennen Nolte could see a lot of time at first base. The freshman from Mullen High School in Thornton, CO, hit .400 his senior year, landing on the AllCentennial League team. Bryce Pearson could see spot time behind the plate, alternating with Colin Stone. The firstyear player mashed 15 home runs during a solid high-school career, one that was plauged with arm problems after he separated his left shoulder during the 2018 football season.
Cullen Glosson
The end result was pretty easy to read: the Broncbusters finished 14th out of 20 teams in the conference in runs scored and homers, 16th in total bases and compiled the fifth fewest hits in the Jayhawk. So how does Finnegan plan to remedy that in 2020? “We have to be better situationally,” he said. “Our goal is to hit a ton of doubles this year. And I think we have the guys to do that. We weren’t good at all situationally last year.” Truslow’s bat was pretty lethal last year, but even more so in 2018. The freshman hit 18 jacks and batted .366-earning first-team All-Jayhawk honors. As a sophomore though, his numbers dipped a bit to .360 and 11 homers. Still, he produced a team-best 44 RBI. But the rest of the roster struggled, combining to hit
or better average all four years. He was selected to the All-State team four times, this while undergoing UCL reconstruction after dislocating his elbow during a football game his senior year.
Corbin Truslow Antother guy to watch is freshman second basemen Cullen Glosson. The infielder may have something to prove after being snubbed for the Gatorade Player of the year in 2019. His prep career was filled with video-game like numbers, hitting .733 with four homers and 42 RBI as a senior at Otis High School. He also hit .700 as a freshman while posting a .500
As far as the returners, Dakota Finley is back following a freshman campaign that saw him hit .298 with 30 RBI. Jake Barber, who swiped 25 bags in 35 attempts in 2019, could move to the bottom of the order, providing some much-needed stability between the seven, eight and nine-hole hitters. Dyan Rodriguez flashed some nice leather at shortstop as a freshman, turning eight double plays in an injury-shortened season. And Brett Thompson should be a valuable piece on the infield after playing in just 12 games as a freshman. He did however produce four RBI in 24 at bats.

BASEBALL The non-conference schedule is littered with home games. Clarendon comes in on Feb. 4, followed by a four-game series with Southeast Nebraska on Feb. 8 and Feb. 9. Other non-Jayhawk games include Clarendon on Feb. 8, Indian Hills on March 21 and Otero on March. 10. On March 5, the Broncbusters begin the league schedule with a four-game series vs. Butler, the Jayhawk West runner-up. That’s followed by a showdown with a much-improved Pratt team before Cloud, and former assistant Eric Gilliland, who’s now the skipper for the Thunderbirds, makes a return trip to Williams Stadium on March 26.
Jake Barber THE SCHEDULE Chris Finnegan’s famous line of the late winter months: “I’m tired of practicing. Let’s play some real games.” And with that, the 2020 odyssey begins on Feb. 1 with two seven-inning games vs. Lamar, CO. You’ll notice the early start time; the veteran coach does that every year, trying to get as many non-conference games in before the league year starts on March 5. And, while most are partying on Super Bowl Sunday, Garden City will be playing a doubleheader in Lamar.
significant? The Reivers are the National Runner-up from last season, losing to Central Arizona in the National Championship Game back in June. “We have to get ready for conference play,” Finnegan said. “This schedule will give us a good, early test on where we are as a team.”
“That’s when the Super Bowl is?” Finnegan asked sarcastically. “We just need to get games in.” Even last year, when his beloved New England Patriots were playing the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII, Finnegan’s squad was battling Trinidad State. So there’s nothing new there. What is new, are some of the opponents, like Iowa Western, who invades Williams Stadium for a three-game series beginning on Feb. 15. Why is that

Connery O’Donnell
All of that is a prelude to their series with Hutchinson, beginning on April 2. The Blue Dragons won 44 games last year before being bounced in the Region VI Championship game by Cowley. The stretch run includes a series with Colby, who made it all the way to the Region VI loser’s bracket final last season, Dodge City, the 2015 Region VI champ, Barton, who qualified for the World Series in 2018, and Seward, who’s been one of the most consistent teams in the Jayhawk West year in and year out.

RECORD: 26-27, 12-20, JAYHAWK • POSTSEASON: REGION VI FIRST ROUND
2019 SEASON IN REVIEW
The 2019 season marked the 20-year anniversary of the 1999 team that turned an up-and-down first month of the season into the program’s first and only World Series berth. Jay Gundy, who was an outfielder on that squad, now serves as the assistant coach on Chris Finnegan’s staff. “Man that was a wild ride,” Gundy said. “Everything kind of came together at just the right time.” As magical as that 1999 campaign was, the 2019 season was far from it. Although it started off very promising. Garden City won their first three games, scoring 10 or more runs in all of them. Then, after a 6-5 loss to Northeastern, the Broncbusters ripped off seven wins in a row to improve to 10-1.
94
They had scored in double digits six times including a 14-3 shellacking of Northeastern on Feb. 2. But everything changed on March 8. Because of snow, Garden City had to play the entirety of their first conference series with Barton in Great Bend. And the Cougars took full advantage. In the opener, the Broncbusters squandered an early scoring chance with the bases loaded in the first; then watched helplessly as the Cougars touched up starter Eric Heiman for six in the opening frame. Barton eventually took the first two 9-5 and 4-1. They followed that up with a 3-1 victory in game three and a come-from-behind win in the finale, overcoming a 3-0 deficit with a nine-run sixth inning.
“We were a different team that first month of the season,” Finnegan recalled. “We were hitting the ball really well.”
“We had so many chances in that series,” Finnegan said. “We just couldn’t throw strikes consistently. And they made us pay.”
Garden City finished the non-conference slate at 12-3, riding a wave of power that included eight home runs in 15 games.
Garden City continued to struggle, dropping game one to Dodge City, 9-4. But in game two, it appeared that the brown
and gold had figured things out. They blitzed the Conquistadors 12-2; then erased an eight-run deficit with an 11-10 victory in game three. They closed the series with a 16-6 beat down, fueled by Turner McDonald and Sean Klein, who combined to go 5-for-9 with eight RBI at the top of the order.
GOBRONCBUSTERS.COM
“That’s one of the best teams that we’ve faced all year,” Finnegan said. “But this team fought. I like our approach from the start. We gave ourselves a chance.” Garden City finished the year 26-27, the first time under Finnegan’s watch with back-to-back losing seasons. But injuries played a big part. Shortstop Dyan Rodriguez missed half the season, Rhett Halstead was lost before the year, and Alec Eskenazi missed time as well. It was all a perfect storm.
“We stayed with it,” Finnegan said. “They didn’t fold, and we won the series.” Unfortunately, the Broncbusters would win just one more series the rest of the way. They dropped three of four to Seward and Colby. Then, after winning two in Concordia against Cloud, the Thunderbirds scored 34 runs over the final two games to even the series. It was the start of a six-game slide to close the regular season.
“A lot of this is luck,” Finnegan added. “We didn’t have the best luck with injuries this year. But no excuses.”
“It hasn’t been a good year,” Finnegan said after his team was swept by Butler. “Hopefully we can figure some things out heading into the tournament.” Johnson County though had other ideas. The Cavaliers made quick work of the Broncbusters in the Region VI Tournament. In game one, after Garden City scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Lara in the top of the first, Johnson County responded with Chris Esposito’s run-scoring double off the wall. The Cavaliers added a run in the second before Landen Wood took Malachi Crone deep over the wall in left. Once the Broncbusters crawled back into it with two runs in the fifth, the Cavaliers added three in the bottom half and four in the sixth to put the game away. In all, Johnson County slugged out 18 hits, 14 of those off of Crone, who gave up 10 earned runs in five innings of work. “We came into this series with no pressure,” Finnegan said. “We knew Johnson was the better team.” In the second game, Garden City held a 2-1 advantage going to the fourth. And Heiman looked sharp. But everything began to crumble in the bottom half when Malik Williams tagged the sophomore hurler for a two-run, go-ahead homer, and Johnson County never looked back.

DREAM 120
JAY GUNDY WAS A STARTING OUTFIELDER ON THE ‘99 TEAM, THE ONLY SQUAD TO EVER REACH GRAND JUNCTION. 21 YEARS LATER, HE STILL REMEMBERS THE JOURNEY
ld OF
MS BY JAY GUNDY
C
THAT FINAL KICK
oming off of the fall of 1998, we knew we had a chance to be pretty good, but how good nobody knew. The first weekend of the year we proved to ourselves just that point, taking one of two games at Seminole State in Oklahoma. That team ended up winning over 50 games and made it to Grand Junction with us later that year. They were more physical and had an edge to them that they were better and we never blinked. That was a great way to open up. The remainder of the season we also proved we could lose to anybody on any given day! We never seemed to get things rolling with many splits and no real winning streaks. As the regular season came to an end, we were somewhere around .500, beating everybody and losing to everybody as the record stated. What we did know, though, is we didn’t have to play perfect to beat anybody in the West. And we were playing the first round at our place. Through those four wins I never remember there being any panic. Even if we fell behind, we knew we would come back. The biggest moment of that weekend came in Game two against Hutch when Pedro Pichardo hit a grand slam to put us ahead for good. To me that is when I was confident we were going to be tough to beat. We then run-ruled Seward in Game three to make it to the final undefeated. Game four against Seward, as I remember, was back and forth a bit but we eventually came out on top. The feeling of the team at that point was not of joy but of unfinished business from the previous spring. Even the freshmen who knew nothing of who Cowley County was, wanted them to be next and this year it was at our place. As it turned out, the two-time defending National Champions fell to Neosho in the East setting our teams up for a best two out of three series with a ticket to Grand Junction at stake. That day felt like we were destined to win. Neither game was very close. We did everything right and anything close went our way. We beat two D-1 arms that day without any stress. When the last out of game two happened, we finally did feel joy. We knew we had done something that hadn’t been done here before! The actual World Series experience was one I will never forget. In the time between the wins against Neosho and our first game at Grand Junction, we were a tic off. We were just missing pitches, balls were just out of range, and pitches just missed their spots. We lost both of our games out there but the memories will always be great ones!
