Thank you! Chamber Staff I would like to take a moment to give my very biggest shout out and thanks for the incredible and wonderful staff of the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce. To Marilyn and Heather–we absolutely, positively could not have done it without you. When things began to shut down, this team came together with a ‘we will make it happen!!’ attitude. They designed an unheard of ‘virtual’ Farmers’ Market that supported our vendors, farmers, sponsors, and local restaurants and business. They watched and followed every order from the Governor’s office, the FDA and the Franklin County Department of Health ensuring our compliance. When the pandemic made it seem impossible to host our annual single evening A Taste of Grove City and Business Expo the team said No Problem, we’ll expand into a month-long restaurant event showcasing restaurants and businesses from multiple genres. There is no possible way to describe the resourcefulness, ingenuity or hours that it took to make Arts in the Alley into a fully virtual event–yet they did it. We limited their hours – they gave more. The pandemic restricted their ability to bring people together–we’ve never had a closer group internally and throughout our membership. There is much more that will need to go unsaid for now – but Marilyn and Heather please know that not one thing has gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I Love you both!!

Letter from Our President PA S T P R E S I D E N T S

Last year we gathered as always in January for the Grove City Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. This meeting has occurred per our by-laws every year since 1979, however little did we know we were just stepping foot on a roller coaster of a ride that became 2020. Roughly two months after our annual meeting our then President Wayne Coakley made the incredibly tough call to cancel what would end up being the first of many events that fell victim to a virus that claimed the lives of millions world wide. At the time COVID was a news story that was starting to pop up around the world. In March it had officially hit Ohio, however the magnitude of what we were dealing with had not yet been felt. Wayne Coakley made the decision to cancel the Taste of Grove City that spared dozens of nursing home residents and Evans Center patrons along with hundreds of Grove City residents from what would have been a super spreader event. We cannot thank Wayne enough for the hard decisions he had to make in the early part of 2020. We are proud that at the Chamber we took Wayne’s lead and made it our mission to take bold steps to fight for our mission which is “To Create a Positive Environment for the Development and Success of Business”. After the cancellation of the Taste of Grove City the Grove City Chamber of Commerce and all of its board members went to the impacted restaurants and businesses to record videos to help advertise the new way of doing business. Restaurants were figuring out carry out and delivery on the fly and essential businesses were trying to figure out how to social distance without going under. This would be just the start of the amazing work the Grove City Chamber of Commerce team would put in during 2020. Shawn Conrad and her team of Marilyn and Heather worked tirelessly during the year to do more than just get by. Under tremendous personal sacrifice each of the Chamber employees kept our team and membership moving forward, always ready to find a creative solution to the challenges ahead. While many organizations went dormant or shuttered their events the Chamber team knew we had to somehow give our community a sense of normal. Our team worked hard to bring our award winning Farmer’s market back. What started as a drive through and ended up as an in person, socially distanced farmers market became a success for all involved. Finally the biggest challenge came before us and as always our team was ready to respond. The board, chamber employees, and volunteers planned and worked to bring a virtual Arts in the Alley to Grove City. While it was done at a time that zoom fatigue was heavy with all of us, our Arts in the Alley market was a success. The artists and crafters who had been hit so hard had an opportunity to bring their products to the people. Our quilters and photographers were able to have their work presented and judged. While reconfiguring our events in 2020 the Grove City Council took a bold and much appreciated step in creating the Hometown Dollar program. The Grove City Chamber of Commerce was tasked with administering this program which provided matching gift cards for Grove City small businesses. The impact was incredible as residents were able to make their stretched dollars go

a little bit further during the Christmas season and area businesses were provided a much needed bump in sales. Thank you to Council President Christine Houk, Councilman Ted Berry, Councilman Randy Holt, Councilman Roby Schottke, and Councilman Aaron Schlabach along with Mayor Ike Stage for your work in bringing this program to our community. That was 2020, as always talking about the was is fun but it only tells us where we have been. We survived, along with everybody joining us today. Part of that survival is moving forward and we have learned moving forward together. We all took a hard look at our priorities when we couldn’t be near each other and found out that no matter what we achieve, no matter how busy we are, being together is truly where we will find our happiness. As the spring thaw took hold and the numbers began to fall we have seen a slow movement back to normal. We at the Chamber enjoyed bringing the newly formatted Taste of Grove City back as a month long event that brought much needed patronage to our area restaurants. Our farmers market is back. As we have slowly spread back down Broadway we have helped bring sorely missed patrons to area businesses. Looking forward we are going to bring an amazing Golf Scramble (which you can still register for). Finally, Grove City’s crown jewel event which we at the Chamber have brought to the city for 40+ years will be back in September. Along with these amazing events we will be working for the first time to bring Boo off Broadway to the community in a new format that will provide more opportunity for businesses and families to participate! I think many folks thought a switch would be flipped and the world would just come back on. We all have learned the hard way that this has not been the case. Childcare and schooling continues to be a major challenge. Businesses are stretched beyond their limits due to a lack of available products, resources, and most importantly willing workers. Anxiety remains high as we all adjust to the new reality, hopefully for the short term. Challenges remain for The Chamber as we help our businesses move forward into our new world. Perhaps the most challenging is helping the small businesses, many of which are owned and operated by lifelong residents struggling with the removal of events from Broadway. What was a long standing tradition that has become part of the Heritage of our Great City has turned into a stark reminder that the business landscape can shift without warning beneath your feet. We at the Chamber will continue to fight hard for our members and community and will continue to persevere together. There are bright days ahead for Grove City and we at the Chamber look forward to celebrating them with you. On the road to better times you can rest assured that we at the Chamber have our sleeves rolled up and are fighting forward with all of you. We are proud to be all together again and look forward to what lies ahead. Sincerely, Ed Fleming President

And the Winners Are... The 2021 GCACC Annual Meeting and Awards Celebration nominees are in! Nomination categories include Heart of the Chamber, Spirit of the Chamber, Ambassador of the Year and the ever-coveted Business of the Year. Get a closer look at the 2020 Chamber Award nominees.

Spirit of the Chamber Award “This will be an annual award given to the person or company that best exemplifies the mission and values of the GCACC and has in some way improved the Business Community in Grove City.”

ANNUAL AWARDS

Our Board and our Staff came together to select the Spirit of the Chamber Award winner from 2020 and while there were many worthy candidates, the person whose name rose to the top of the list was someone who kept the Chamber functioning throughout the pandemic, someone who made it possible for us to continue to function effectively and efficiently as a Chamber and someone who gave their time, energy and resources to keep us running – our very dear friend, Bill Fenner. Bill set us up to work remotely, he donated workstations, screens and other technology and all the support to keep it going. He helped us create some of the systems and processes that we used during our virtual events, and he very literally helped us to keep our virtual doors open throughout the pandemic. Thanks for everything Bill – you deserve this award, and we appreciate you!!!

Heartland Bank Heart of the Chamber Award “This will be an annual award given to the company that has made a generous contribution to the work of the Chamber; that being the contribution of time, resources, volunteers or finances.” Recognizing just one business amidst the hundreds that comprise our Chamber is never an easy task. However, as we came together to select our 2020 Heartland Bank Heart of the Chamber winner, the choice was quite clear. As a very active Chamber of Commerce representing over 700 members, stopping in mid-stream for a pandemic was never an option. Communicating with our members, keeping the connection between membership and the GCACC were vital pieces of serving our members and our community. The winner of this year’s Heartland Bank Heart of the Chamber Award is our very own marketing team, KatBro! Working 100% remotely they were able to produce our weekly newsletter ‘Chamber Weekly Connection’ and in doing so they were able to keep our members updated on important news that would impact them and their business. They created, wrote, designed and published the only Chamber driven e-mag in central Ohio – Chamber Business Connection as well as our quarterly newspaper, Grove City Living. They worked countless, and I might add ‘unbilled’ hours helping us communicate updates and information regarding our events and programs. Katbro provided the mechanisms to make the Taste of Grove City the wonderful event that it was, they gave endless hours for our first ever virtual Arts in the Alley and our 2020 blended live/virtual Farmers’ Market. Our most sincere thanks from all of us to Katie, Sarah, Rhian, Danielle and the rest of the team at KatBro!!!

Business of the Year Nominees There is nothing more exciting to the Chamber than highlighting our local businessses. The Business of the Year Award is one our favorite opportunities to do exactly that; we bring the community together to identify their favorite business and we get to celebrate along with them. The Business of the Year is selected entirely by the people of our community and is an honor to receive. We received more votes this year than ever before and our top two nominees are Skylark Toys and Terra Michelle Spa and Salon. Please join us in congratulating both of these outstanding businesses.

Jennifer’s Spotlight Caring for our nation’s most vulnerable population has always been both rewarding and challenging. It draws those who strive to utilize a unique combination of compassion and keen assessment skills in a fast-paced, inspiring environment into health care. These pandemic ridden, unprecedented times have thrown nurses into the spotlight and without much thought; they rolled up their sleeves, put on a mask and went on working. The profession, reclassified in 2020 as heroes, has hidden their uncertainty and fears and taken on the personal and professional challenges of providing what is need for those who have become exposed or contract the Covid 19 virus in additional to their traditional patients and residents. Individuals working in senior communities have become essential lifelines for residents and their loved ones – offering comfort and connection at a time marred by crisis, fear and death. At the start of this startling pandemic, there were many uncertainties and information was rapidly evolving. The MacIntosh Company is fortunate to have strong leadership that reacted promptly to put our staff and residents in the best position to navigate through the unknown. Our Corporate Director of Clinical Services, Jennifer took the lead in reading, listening and deciphering every outlet of communication provided from local, state and federal levels. An overwhelming, imperative and thankless task. With the rapidly evolving information came required immediate actions, change of course and new resources or approaches. Jennifer developed her team of our Care Communities Directors of Nursing and Infection Preventionist and equipped them with pertinent information, focus and encouragement. Initially daily, now weekly information sessions are held so all center management teams gain real time updates, directives, best practices are shared, and questions answered as they arise. Everyone in the company remains committed to doing whatever it takes to continue providing the care and attention our residents need and desire. Our health care heroes have done an incredible job during an unthinkable time requiring tireless hours behind the scene. Jennifer’s leadership, hard work, dedication and extraordinary efforts inspire us. A positive aspect in the midst of challenge has been the encouragement and support we receive from our families, communities and local hospitals in our efforts to respond during the pandemic crisis. Local businesses have provided donations of food and treats to express their appreciation of our healthcare heroes that were deemed as essential workers on the front lines

of the pandemic. Families send notes expressing their gratitude stand outside with encouraging posters and find unique ways to stay connected to those the love within our care communities. What joy those acts of kindness have brought. The days are long, the struggles are so very real but what our health care heroes are doing is making a profound difference in the lives of patients and families we service as well as the employees we work alongside. Each one of you and your contributions matter. Thank you for all that you are doing to help us live out our mission and for being an incredible example of all that remains good in this world.

Mt. Carmel Grove City “To all our colleagues at Mount Carmel Health System, THANK YOU for your relentless adherence to providing compassionate, safe and selfless care to our patients and our community. We appreciate your sacrifice to run toward the danger instead of running away; and continue to put the needs of others before your own. We want you to know, your actions are seen and appreciated. You are all True Pandemic Heroes!” – Tauana McDonald, President Mount Carmel Grove City

All Secured

OhioHealth

“OhioHealth would like to nominate OhioHealth Grove City Methodist Hospital’s extraordinary frontline workers; the frontline heroes have gone above and beyond throughout the pandemic; they continue to be on the frontline in this difficult time, continuing support the community.”

Jackson Township Fire Department

Nominated by Chief Little: ‘The two that I would nominate for their work during the pandemic are Dr. Eric Cortez, our Medical Director,  and Lt. Robert Schneider, our EMS Coordinator.  These gentlemen were responsible for the evaluation, creation, and monitoring of our response to the pandemic and our policies and procedures to prevent our staff from the virus.  Beyond these two, all our firefighters did an excellent job facing an unknown virus and continuing to deliver the excellent service our community deserves.’

All Secured Employees spent countless hours volunteering to board up all downtown businesses so they would be safe while being shut down. All Secured absorbed this enormous cost of supplies and equipment not only to board up but to also take down when the business was strong enough to open back up.

MId-Ohio Food Bank In recognition of the Ohio National Guard’s work with MidOhio Food Bank: Matt Habash with MidOhio Food Collective wrote: “At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mid-Ohio Food Collective lost approximately 80 percent of its volunteer base. The Ohio National Guard and Military Reserve were deployed to provide relief and, from March, 2020 - June, 2021, helped connect over 100 million pounds of food to hungry neighbors in our 20 county service area who made about 1.5 million visits to pantry partners. These remarkable men and women instituted efficiencies in our new “no touch” distribution allowing them to safely serve customers every 32 seconds, alleviating long lines seen elsewhere. I am convinced that Mid-Ohio Food Collective would have been hard-pressed to respond to a nearly 20 percent growth in demand without these remarkable citizen soldiers and our remaining volunteers.”

Grove City Pantry Don Swogger is recognizing Tracy Fiber, Grove City Food Pantry: Don wrote: “Tracy is the manager at the Grove City Food Pantry and she kept the pantry open during the Pandemic even increasing the number of clients being served each day and the number of times that they could come in per month to make sure that they had enough food to feed their families. Tracy also made sure that all the volunteers followed the Government Safety Guidelines, she made sure that all the volunteers was wearing mask and Temperature checks upon entering the building she also made sure that all the tables and equipment was cleaned daily. Tracy did an excellent job keeping the food pantry open and putting herself and family at risk during the Pandemic. Thank you Tracy.”

Mojo on Broadway Kim Chaffin is recognizing her husband Bill Chaffin, Mojo on Broadway: Kim wrote: “In April 2020 as the pandemic first started and businesses were shutting down, he started the Community Tee Project raising money for small businesses that were affected (churches, bars, restaurants, beauty salons, contractors and more). He put together a campaign selling tshirts with local businesses on them, and gave the proceeds directly to the owners. I think he raised over 15k! He gave one salon $1,000, she cried and said that was her salon rent payment for the month! He handed out checks to small business all over Grove City! I have never been so proud!!! We both own a small business and know first hand how people suffered! It was amazing watching our amazing community come together and support our small businesses and amazing that my husband provided that platform!!”

12

Grove City Division of Police Officer Eric Scott, Grove City Division of Police, recognizes Officer Brittany Hennessy, GCDP: Officer Scott wrote: “While providing mutual aid during the Columbus demonstrations on May 30, 2020, Officer Hennessy encountered a person suffering from a gunshot wound. After assessing the situation, she provided first aid to the victim and administered a chest seal. The victim survived the gunshot wound as a result of Officer Hennessy’s actions.”

Hometown Dollars Tami Kelley would like to recognize Ted Berry for his work on Hometown Dollars, a program introduced to ‘double your money’ to benefit both customers and small businesses. The program launched late November 2020, just in time for the holidays.

A FINAL NOTE IN RECOGNITION OF ALL:

We had many citizens make recognitions without names (though some have been included above, such as the case of National Guard members), and we had some who were recognized inform us they prefer to remain anonymous. Name mentioned or not, we value you all and thank you for your contributions and dedication to our community!

SWCL Meeting once per month for 9 months, this program challenges and develops participants’ leadership skills through dedicated programs that focus on community involvement, ethics and team-building, while providing participants with a greater knowledge of the history of our community. Students of the SWCL program will learn from other community leaders and their processes. This group applies the skills they have to a group project that will be shared in the community. Each class works to select a community service project and together they ensure the successful completion of the project. Southwest Community Leadership classes have raised funds for the dream field, gold star memorial, for technology at the Grove City library, and have done work projects for Grove City Baseball Fields, the playground at Urban Crest and many others. For more information about the SWCL program contact the chamber.

Young Professionals The Grove City Area Young Professionals is a group of up and coming professionals agest 21-39 who live and work in the Grove City Area. We are working to create a thriving community in and around the Grove City area through community service , networking and professional development opportunities. Members of this group are dedicated to improving themselves and the community around them.

PROGRAMS

The GCAYP group heads up programs such as GCACC Composting program, The Pumpkin Smash, the community coat & mitten drive, and many other community outreach projects. We are proud of the work this new program is doing in the community and look forward to seeing more from this group.

WE:LEAD Like most other 2020 events, WE:LEAD moved to a virtual platform as we gathered via Zoom. The theme of recharging was much needed after a year that at times felt endless. Speakers included keynote Gina Molinari, and session speakers Marti Post-Bledsoe, Stacy McPhillips, and Rhonda Shappert. All provided their helpful, insightful, and even powerful, takes on recharging and renewing as life pulls women in dozens of directions. WE:LEAD looks forward to not only the next Forum, but other events throughout the year that allow women to connect and relate.

Farmers’ Market 2020’s Farmers’ Market started unlike any other year (one of many themes of 2020). Taking cues from how restaurants offered pre-order/pick-up, the Market went virtual. Customers could place orders with Market vendors online during the week and then on Saturday mornings come for pick-up packed right into their vehicles. This new idea allowed local vendors and producers to continue selling products, and customers could purchase safely, and many also complimented the convenience! By mid-June, shoppers were able to be welcomed back to shop the Market ‘in-person’ with health rules in place similar to other retail or grocery stores. Though different, the Market still allowed for the sale and purchase of local products, and for some it could once again be a high point of their weekend.

FA R M E R S ’ M A R K E T

Easing out of pandemic restrictions has brought about a more ‘normal looking’ Market as seen in the photos below. The Market for 2021 is still ongoing, every Saturday until Sept. 11 from 8am-noon. The Market can be found at Park and Broadway, extending down Park and in the parking lot.

Arts in the Alley Arts in the Alley is one of the signature events of the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce. The name is a reflection of the festival’s humble beginnings. Over 40 years ago, artists and crafters gathered for the first time in the alley behind the businesses on Broadway and Park Streets. Now, the event continues as one of Central Ohio’s largest and longest running cultural festivals. Arts in the Alley has grown over the years and has expanded far beyond early boundaries. As we navigated the unexpected impact of COVID-19 we got creative on how to continue this tradition and created Arts in the Alley “Home Edition”. Arts in the Alley moved from the streets of Grove City to cyberspace where it could be enjoyed at almost any time by virtually anyone, anywhere, in the world. Leading into the online festivities, families engaged in weekly chalk art challenges, & bringing color and joy to neighborhood sidewalks. Local music groups pre-recorded mini-concerts for viewing and activities for kids were added, this time with seasonal themes for Thanksgiving and even leading into Christmas. Vendors were set up virtually where shoppers could browse for holiday gifts, and all of the usual artwork was available for view and could be voted on by the public.

ARTS IN THE ALLEY

We are thrilled to be planning Arts in the Alley 2021 which will once again be a fully live event! September 17, 18 and 19 you will find many new and exciting features in addition to the vendors, shows, music, concessions and more!

Chamber Open

CHAMBER OPEN

Postponed but not cancelled, the Chamber Open got people off Zoom and onto the golf course for the traditional 18 holes. A few elements of the outing were missing, but the main elements of “golf” and “fun” were still present. A team from BASF consisting of Matt Cook, Kenny Miller, John Keating, and Mike Mikola won the outing. The 2021 Chamber Open is about to take place and should be an event to look forward to!

Hometown Dollars For the first time ever, the Chamber partnered with the City of Grove City to bring a “double your money” program to give a needed economic (and energy) boost to the community. Businesses were quick to sign up to participate and customers were just as quick to jump to purchasing the Hometown Dollars certificates. Allocated funds were exhausted roughly by the end of Thanksgiving, approximately two weeks after the program’s formal launch. Businesses reported new customers and a boost in sales, while community members spoke of their money going farther for holiday purchases, and being able to try out new shops or restaurants. Now into our 2nd round of HD Dollars, shoppers continue to support local businesses through this program.

Taste of Grove City 2020 The Taste of Grove City 2020 was cancelled as we all adapted to the unprecented impact of COVID 19. Our Chamber leadership and marketing team continued to promote local restaurants through social media and were pleased when ABC6/Fox28 still ran their previously-taped segments in the hopes of encouraging the community to utilize take-out with local businesses and restaurants as they adapted as well. 17
