Educational Partners Have you met Franklin University and Ohio Dominican University, our educational partners? Read on to learn more, or click here to view videos each university provided us: https://www.gcchamber.org/education/ Franklin University Educational Partnership We love hearing more are beginning to take advantage of this partnership program with Franklin University. Two of the highlights of this program include a 20% discount on tuition and free textbooks. The savings add up, and scholarships from the Chamber Foundation as previously mentioned can help further offset costs. Franklin also routinely adds additional courses, certificates and even entire degree programs. Recently members were sent a survey to gauge educational needs of their employees and business, so we imagine Franklin will only continue to strive to serve members’ educational needs. If it’s been a while since you’ve looked through Franklin’s offerings, we suggest you check again—it’s completely possible there’s something new and it might be perfect for you or a team member. To learn more about our partnership with Franklin University visit: https://www.franklin. edu/grovecitychamber Educational Partnership with Ohio Dominican University We have another partnership with another university in the area, meaning more options and opportunities. One unique element is the corporate cohort should a business meet the minimum requirement of 15 employees (we would suggest checking on the status of some of the in-person ‘perks’ since we’re still technically in a pandemic as this is written…). Ohio Dominican options are business-oriented but vary enough to cater to a variety of businesses. There are several different discount potentials depending on the option chosen, some including a certain number of free classes. ODU also mentions a generous credit transfer policy, so if you or an employee took classes or began a degree program elsewhere they will gladly work with you to make the most of you what you’ve got. Our partnership-specific information with Ohio Dominican is online as a PDF, so we advise visiting our education webpage and then clicking on the ODU option: https://www.gcchamber.org/education/

Business of the Year— The Announcement is Coming! We’re keeping our Business of the Year winner a surprise until August 4th at our Annual Meeting, but, we can give you a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the wonderful comments voters shared.

“Great place and is very community oriented.” “Atmosphere so welcoming and always in high spirits. Come hungry because the food is delish!” “Family owned for decades, and the building itself is historic to Grove City. Great food and the center of town events. Grove City wouldn’t be the same without them.” “The owner is very kind and friendly and the store is awesome”

To maintain the surprise (or suspense?), we’re sharing comments without business names, though in some cases you can tell what kind of industry they are in, such as food, a store front, or service-oriented, some of these comments can apply to more than one Grove City area business!

“Because I trust them with my kids. They treat kids like they’re one of their own. Family”

“These guys care about their community and how they represent GC.”

“They stepped up during the pandemic and made sure our friends and neighbors had food “ and “The aid they provided to the community and students during the pandemic.”

“This new company offers services not found in Grove City before. The staff is welcoming and educates users.” “They are great people and go above and beyond for their patients!” “It is run by a hardworking Grove City family that tries to do everything it can for the community.” 12 | CHAMBER BUSINESS CONNECTION AUG 2021

“The most amazing ladies that know your self worth and have lots of love. They make sure you feel so beautiful!”

(Writer’s Note: Spoiler Alert—Members of our community were kind enough to also cast votes for our non-profits, so we wanted to extend another thank you to all who have helped provide assistance to meet unprecedented needs. CHAMBER UPDATES With school returning to a more normal look this year, that means Chamber Gives Back is also looking more its usual self. Last year we supported as we could when factoring in various distancing requirements and the unique needs of students who began the year learning virtually. Like everyone, we made do last year, but again like everyone, it feels so good to get back to normal! Participating businesses are asked to rally their employees and departments to collect school supplies for students in the South-Western City School District. Below are sample supply lists based on what is most needed provided to us by SWCSD (though we’re told most any basic school supply item will find a home!): Elementary School: backpacks/book bags, Crayola crayons, Crayola markers, bound notebooks/journals (wide ruled), pencils Intermediate/Middle School: backpacks/book bags, spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper (wide ruled), 2-picket/3-prong folders, pens, pencils, colored pencils High School: backpacks/book bags, 1” or 1.5” large 3-ring binders, loose-leaf paper (college ruled), pens, pencils, 2-pocket/3prong folders, colored pencils ‘Formal’ participation registration is closed, but we want to collect as many items as possible to make for a great welcome back to the classroom for local students. If you didn’t get to sign up, but would still like to donate supplies, please call the Chamber office within the first week of August to make arrangements, phone number: (614) 875-9762. We want to thank the following members who have signed up in advance to collect supplies within their workplace. In the past we’ve seen some great challenges across departments and hope that is yet another piece of normalcy we can welcome back! Thank you to: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

CHAMBER UPDATES

Hometown Dollars Returns Strong Our second round of Hometown Dollars launched on June 1 to huge success. Local businesses could get summer rolling and customers could make their dollar go farther in returning to ‘old’ favorites or trying new businesses. Happening along with the unofficial beginning of summer on the heels of Memorial Day weekend, and the lifting of many health regulations in the area made for an exciting time to get back to what resembled a normal lifestyle. The entire program wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of the City of Grove City designating the funds and establishing the guidelines. We are very grateful for their investment in local, small businesses and are excited for our next partnership and collaborative efforts. Additional thank yous go out to the businesses who jumped on board to participate and the customers who rushed to the online store. We also had a handful of volunteers join us in the office to help process orders and get certificates to customers. We are very grateful they could help out with this effort that brought the age-old phrase “many hands make light work” to life.

That Back to School “Mojo” The Business

Mojo on Broadway is ready to kick off the new school year and the fall sports season with local school apparel for everyone. With a family love of the local schools and school sports, it’s a natural fit. Mojo on Broadway as a retailer is still somewhat new, but as owner Bill Chaffin explained, Mojo has roots as an indoor practice facility in 2014. Like many businesses over the years, plans change, especially when opportunity knocks. The availability of the Broadway location paired with a demand for quality, local apparel made a retail store the next step and great idea for Bill, along with his wife Kim. “We had specialized in team sports for a long time,” Bill said via email Q&A, “and the need for better spirit wear and school apparel options was something we wanted to provide.” The Product In discussing products, “fresh” and “comfortable” were both key words—two great words when it comes to apparel. Bill told us, “One of our “rules” is it must be comfortable!” More specifically, those comfortable items for school spirit will include tees, hoodies, hats, and beanies. And while there will always be a few staple pieces for the schools, customers can look forward to kicking off the new school year and sports season with new designs. “We strive to keep everything “fresh” for the customers.” In addition to what’s available on the shelves and racks, Mojo is always up for a good custom order. A personal favorite of Bill’s was for the 2021 senior Grove City High School baseball players using their “dirtbag” phrasing and mentality and creating “Dirtbags 4 Life” as their send-off. Bill is a fellow GCHS baseball alum and was able to use his business to reach the latest class. And while customers, and Bill, love fresh designs, there’s also something great about a good design that has some ‘staying power’, that keeps showing up. “We have done numerous Alumni designs as well, and those are always great to see people wearing year over year.”

20 | CHAMBER BUSINESS CONNECTION AUG 2021

FEATURED

Weathering 2020 Instead of ushering in a new school and sports year in the manner done every year before, 2020 threw the curveball with school starting online and sports being in question at best. Mojo on Broadway was still settling into their retail home while trying to cater to their new clientele and keep school spirit alive. “We were able to do some sport specific (football) designs for both Grove City and Central Crossing,” Bill explained their fall 2020 situation. “Our customers seemed appreciative of that since normal spirit wear practices were not being used due to concern over their respective seasons being put on hold.” The Chamber and City’s Hometown Dollars program was able to give a boost to Mojo in sales, new customers, and even the excitement that comes from retail shopping. “We were truly blessed by the program when it initially rolled out,” Bill said. “We were speechless at the support we received.” But now with 2020 in rearview and fairly normal school year ahead, Bill encourages others to get out there to support their local schools—the teams, the students, everyone. The Energy Mojo is ready to go for the new school year, bringing the school spirit energy, and sometimes those new “fresh” looks are inspired by the customer. “There are quite a few items that we offer due to requests by the consumer,” Bill said. Which means if a customer has an idea, or doesn’t see what they’re looking for—just ask! Both Bill and Kim are proud Grove City High School graduates and their kids attend or will also attend GCHS. But, they have connections beyond GCHS with friends on school and sport staffs at Central Crossing, Franklin Heights, and beyond. Even through email it’s easy to tell that Bill knows, and loves, his local school sports and loves working with them all. “We try to help all the teams and coaches whenever the opportunity presents itself. This is a great area, not just Grove City, to be working in.”

BACK TO SCHOOL

Heading Back to School at SWCSD

With the new school year, and the return to the classroom full time, approaching it’s time to get everyone ready to get back into the school routine. Chamber member businesses have joined in the back-to-school efforts through Chamber Gives Back (which you can also read about in this issue) to support South-Western City School District students. We reached out to our friends and partners at SWCSD and the shared the following tips for success. For specific back to school questions for the South-Western City School District, we encourage you to consult their website and reach out directly: https://www.swcsd.us/ If your child doesn’t attend a SWCSD school, we still hope you will find the following tips helpful and encourage you to reach out to your child’s school for details and clarification. One of the tips below is about establishing strong communication between home and school! The following tips were created by South-Western Council of PTAs President Sheila Ragland. Sheila is also a past Ohio PTA President. Thank you to Sandy Nekoloff for sharing these with us.

Start bedtime routines early. Children will need to get back into the sleeping pattern they had before summer break. Starting two weeks in advance of the first day of school will make it easier for them to wake up for school in the morning.

Attend Open House/Meet the Teacher Night so children are familiar with their school. If children are worried about starting a new school with new classmates and a new teacher, this will ease the anxiety of going back.

Talk with your child about the positive aspects of going back to school. Seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and all of the fun activities at school can help them get excited about heading back to school.

Set expectations for developing good homework and study habits. Create an environment at home that is conducive to doing homework – their own workspace that is quiet and promotes good study habits.

Communicate with your child’s school and teacher. If you have questions about school, ask your child’s teacher or the principal to get the facts. Don’t listen to rumors.

Join the PTA and stay involved in your child’s school.

BACK TO SCHOOL

HEALTHY EATING FOR BACK TO SCHOOL To mark back to school, and students getting to return to their classrooms, we caught up with Trish Zelenak of Trish Z Fitness for ideas and recipes for eating healthy, but also quickly, as we get back into our old and more normal routines. Many might know Trish as she’s been a regular cooking presenter at the Farmers’ Market in past years. She’s a local working mom and wife on a mission to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle for herself, and help others achieve healthy lifestyles of their own. First up, Trish has decided to host an entire week of “Healthy Lunches for Back to School & Office” in my “Busy Friends Guide to a Healthy Lifestyle” free Facebook Group starting Monday August 16 and running through Friday August 20. Each day there will be content sharing recipes, tips, and resources for healthy lunch ideas for different ages of kids and parents that are going back to school and work. Here is the schedule she has worked out: • • • • •

Monday, August 16th: Healthy Lunch Ideas/Snacks for Toddlers & Preschoolers Tuesday, August 17th: Healthy Lunch Ideas/Snacks for Elementary School Kids Wednesday, August 18th: Healthy Lunch Ideas/Snacks for Middle & High School kids (focusing on fueling them for after school sports) Thursday, August 19th: Healthy Lunch Ideas/Snacks for College Aged Kids Adult Kids Friday, August 20th: Healthy Lunch Ideas/Snacks for Busy Moms on the Go

The group will officially start Monday, August 16th, but people can start requesting to be added to this free group now by clicking here and requesting to be added. Trish will reach out and accept their request: https://www.facebook.com/groups/159137821148346 Given that the special week will line up closely with back-to-school, participants will be able to try out new recipes and ask questions in ‘real time’ as we return to that normal flow of school and kids’ activities. Since each day is a different age group, this is also a great chance to focus on the unique nutrition needs of kids based on their age range and even their activity levels. Parents struggling to get their children to eat their fruits and veggies may also pick up some tips to work with and nourish the pickiest of eaters. Trish’s recipes also pair well with shopping our Grove City Farmers’ Market (hence why we’ve teamed up with her before!). Trish includes lots of fresh fruits and veggies; you might just be able to purchase most ingredients from the market! To browse all recipes, check out her blog: https://trishzfitness.blogspot.com Here is a recipe Trish brought to our attention (also available on her blog) for a quick and healthy back-toschool breakfast or even an afternoon snack.

RED, WHITE & BLUE OVERNIGHT OATS Make ahead oatmeal has to be one of my favorite quick & easy breakfasts! I love having something ready to go in the morning, especially on holiday weekends when we have a lot of FUN planned … who wants to spend more time cooking? Anyway, try this recipe and I hope you love it as much as I do— perfect for a plan ahead breakfast or an anytime snack — and let me know what you think! Directions: Assemble in large mouth pint size Mason jars in order: ~1/2 cup blueberries (on bottom) ~1/2 cup strawberries, diced ~1 T chia seeds ~1 1/2 tsp raw honey ~1/2 cup oats ~3/4 cup almond milk, unsweetened Store in refrigerator overnight; if preferred warm, take of lid and microwave to desired temperature. Enjoy!
