Vision and Mission Statements GREENFIELD COMMUNITY COLLEGE Vision: Strengthening Our Community Lives change for the better every day at Greenfield Community College. Families grow stronger and so too our community. Our vision is to strengthen our community one student at a time. We understand our role and responsibilities, as a college in the global community, to create a better world for all.
Mission: Teaching and Learning Together Our mission is to teach, in a small, supportive and intimate learning environment, the knowledge and skills necessary for our students to reach their highest potential. Our doors are open to all who seek to learn. In striving to fulfill this mission we also seek to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to reach our highest potential as a college. At GCC, we are passionate about teaching and learning together!
GCC FOUNDATION Vision The Greenfield Community College Foundation gathers and manages the resources required to ensure that Greenfield Community College is the nation’s finest small college; a conduit for regional, national, and international philanthropic investment; and an instrument for helping the College to achieve its vision for the future. Initiatives of particular interest to the Foundation include: • Access and opportunity for every student • Mutually beneficial strategic partnerships and collaborations • Programs to identify and support future leaders • Recognition of diversity and the evolving needs of our community
Mission Our mission is to support the mission of Greenfield Community College — its students, faculty, staff, and alumni — by building relationships and raising funds throughout a service area that encompasses Franklin and Hampshire counties in western Massachusetts, the counties of southern Vermont and New Hampshire and beyond. Message from the President of Greenfield Community College In Celebration of the Word “AND” In a binary society, like the one we are living in today, (see www.gcc.mass.edu/presidentsoffice/we-live-in-binary-times) there is a celebration of the word “OR,” where one is either right OR wrong, good OR bad, and things are either black OR white. The outcomes of that perspective to the economic and social wellbeing of our nation are the decline of the middle, the nuanced and the integrated. Too much and too many get left out of a binary world. That polarization shakes the very foundation of our democracy. At GCC we celebrate the word “AND” with intention. Look to our mission, programs and curriculum for examples. The GCC mission celebrates both the purpose of transfer to a four year college AND the need for a skilled workforce trained over a shorter period. That comprehensive mission is an understanding of our students, our community AND of the journey. We do no lock students into one path OR the other. We understand the needs of a single mom who comes to us saying “I need training to get a job now to pay rent and take care of my baby.” AND, we understand the needs of our students who choose GCC as the first step towards a Baccalaureate degree or higher. In one eye we see the need for the pathway to a job right out of GCC and in the other eye a vision towards the path of the 4-year degree “as our two eyes make one in sight.” (Frost, 1934) So too, our academic programs. Our manufacturing program, a collaborative with Franklin County Technical School, the Regional Employment Board and employers from our local manufacturing industry has recently graduated its 100th student ready for that job at VSS, Bete Fogg and Dumont. Our nurses, paramedics, fire fighters, police offices, and early childhood educators provide the infrastructure of our community. Each are in high demand and highly respected because of the foundation provided here at GCC, AND, our transfer rates are among the best in the nation. We transfer more women to Smith than any other college in the country and our students are accepted at UMass at a higher rate and do better academically than any other community college in the state. Look deeper and one will find a purposeful integration of workforce skills, “soft skills” AND the liberal arts. Our nurses are sought after because they have learned not only the clinical skills of a nurse. They also have learned to communicate more effectively, work well in teams, solve problems more creatively, make challenging decisions and they have learned how to learn. One will find the same commitment and outcomes in all of our academic programs. Our faculty and staff work with students to develop a sustainable foundation for an everchanging workforce and economy. As it turns out that is exactly what the employers in our community tell us are the skills they most desire for the educated workforce. At GCC, our vision is one of integration AND collaboration; transfer AND workforce; short-term needs AND sustainable skills; the vocational arts AND the liberal arts – a better educated workforce AND a stronger Democracy. At GCC we celebrate “AND” in a world filled with too much “OR.” Sincerely,
Bob Pura

Simon Hwang-Carlos shines as a pianist who has excelled in his studies at GCC. Hwang-Carlos received a 29 Who Shine Award from Governor Charlie Baker at a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House. GCC President Bob Pura nominated Simon for the Award which recognizes outstanding graduates from the Commonwealth’s public higher education system. Simon studied at GCC for three years, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, and graduated in June with an Associate’s degree in Music. He will study toward a Bachelor’s degree in piano performance at UMass Amherst. Simon’s mentor, GCC Music Department Chair Matthew Shippee, was also recognized at the Award ceremony.
Students attending GCC’s Environmental Economics course onsite and online are learning from long-time Economics and Business Professor Martha Field, using the textbook Field co-authored with her husband Barry C. Field. First published in 1994, and now in its 7th edition, the Fields’ Environmental Economics textbook has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and is used in college classrooms in many countries.
The 2016 Greenfield Community College Distinguished Alumni Award was presented at the GCC Foundation Annual Meeting. The award was presented to data scientist Christopher Doyle ’98.
Bob Pura said, “Simon has overcome many challenges, turning what some identify as ‘disability’ into extraordinary abilities. He brings his passion for music and models excellence in learning to his community. Simon is an extraordinary blend of courage, intelligence, and heart. He represents the best of who we are at GCC.” “Simon has made good on Massachusetts taxpayers’ investment in his education,” said Carlos E. Santiago, MA Commissioner of Higher Education. “Every year the 29 Who Shine remind us that our public college and university graduates represent the future of the Commonwealth.

Students of all ages from a wide range of majors can take the course, which studies the environment from the economic viewpoint. It centers on the question of how we make choices about environmental policies given scarce resources that must meet a wide range of other needs. Like Fields’ textbook, environmental issues are not contained by state or country borders. Kathleen Vranos, Dean of Business, Information Technology, Social Sciences & Professional Studies, highlighted the importance of offering online courses in addition to the classroom. She said, “We know 82% of students work full-time while pursuing their degrees and certificates and 66% of students work part-time. Our faculty are listening to student needs and are working hard to create and deliver effective online learning opportunities to meet the region’s needs.”
Chris graduated with his Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts from GCC, and his high school diploma from Pioneer Valley Regional School on the same weekend in 1998, following two years of successful dual enrollment. He then transferred to complete his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Science from Syracuse University, with further studies in Germany. Chris has presented for the Association of National Advertisers in New York City on building a world class data science time and is currently ranked the 7th most influential data scientist in the world by klout.com. He has worked around the world as an economist and a senior actuary and now serves as the Director of Pricing and Market Analysis at Aspen Dental in Syracuse, New York. Chris has volunteered for Head Start (which he attended as a child in Turners Fall), the United Way and local soup kitchens. Currently, his philanthropic work focuses on initiatives to promote STEM learning with children.
