Hello my crafty friends! As I stood at the check out counter a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't believe that Summer had gone by so fast. I enjoyed seeing all the parents helping their little ones pick out backpacks and matching lunch boxes. I love buying new bundles of pencils and socks. I guess if I had to pick, Fall would be my second favorite

GET INSPIRED

I drew inspiration from the photo in two main ways - color and season. The subject of the photo looks like she is enjoying a crisp, autumn day, and one of my favorite parts of fall is going back to school. It just so happens that my by Tessa Buys sons' school colors are dark green and white, which also are elements of the photo. By pulling papers from Country Charm, Splendor and Sweet Tooth, I paper-pieced an apple element (tying in fall and the color green) for a back-to-school layout.

As my kids get older, scrapbooking their school pictures seem to get harder and harder. All of the school collections that are available seem to be marketed for the grade school aged kids. Well, what I love about GCD Studios is there are so many different collections with so many different color pallets that it is so easy for me to scrapbook my older junior high and high school kids. I love the color combo picked for this layout… it just works perfectly. I created the sun because I wanted it to represent the bright future my kids have and I was able to use multiple patterned papers for the sun's rays. I also stitched around the sun and the rays to give it a finished look. I then added some buttons to give the page some dimension. SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Splendor: Letter Tiles (1680); Bonjour: Paris Je T'Aime (1541); Country Charm: Picnic Blanket (1509), Cherry Pie (1504). Other: buttons.

Remember those wooden desks in your classroom? Well, I sure do-this woodgrain paper brings back the memories of writing on those laminate desks! It also provides a great backdrop for the "Super Star" title and theme of this card. A cute variety of patterned paper stars against the fun green patterned paper and woodgrain patterned paper work well together and lead the eye to the mini chalkboard sentiment! Mixing fun trends like the polka dots in the patterned paper and hexagon die cuts make this card playful and perfect for your young back-to-schooler!  Play around with your die cuts. I die cut a panel of pattern paper and then trimmed some off. Creating movement though "falling" hexagons highlights the bold colors and patterns of the paper. Back-toschool is a happy milestone in a kid's life, add a sentiment to your card and present it to your little scholar on the first day back. SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Splendor: Letter Tiles (1680); Bonjour: Paris Je T'Aime (1541); Country Charm: Picnic Blanket (1509), Cherry Pie (1504). Other: buttons.

Using just a few products or pieces of paper can open up the possibility for serious creativity!!! I chose to use these papers and focus upon the photo of our exchange students from China that were with us for 3 weeks. They were here learning about the American way of life through schooling. A little Country Charm goes a long way

11 | gcdstudios.com gcdstudios.blogspot.com

With freshly picked designs straight from the countryside, Country Charm is full of homemade goodness with vintage appeal.

Card by Tracy Schultz

Layout by Wendi Robinson

I love making paper flowers for accents on cards. They're so easy and versatile. Here, a trio of paper flowers serves as the focal point for a card with a matching sentiment and some fun polka-dotted paper. You can use a die-cut to make these paper flowers or just cut a spiral and wind them yourself. Either way, the result is whimsical and just plain fun!

I just LOVE the fun, happy colors of Country Charm. They are perfect for a sweet photo of my little girl, esp with the bright, fun onesie she was wearing in the photo. I drew the colors from the onesie throughout the page, and the title work. Since it also had a cupcake on it, I created a cupcake, complete with a cherry on top. I mixed and matched patterns for the background to complete a happy,

CRO Layout by Julie Overby First day of school pictures have always been hard for me. Where’s the balance between getting that perfect shot and not stressing out your child before his/her first day? LOL All I know is that there is one and each year I strive to find that balance. I have scrapped a classic look, with class shapes and classic papers that tie in with my daughter’s classic ‘first day of school’ outfit. Even though it was just last year, it seems like it was centuries ago and I’m so glad that I was able to catch that look as she anticipated her first day. Oh My

Stars!

Custom Notepad by Clare Prezzia A fun, quick and easy way to personalize a notepad, perfect for writing shopping lists, to-do lists, or even little encouraging notes!

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Country Charm: Super Star (1511). Other: notepad.

Baseball Star by Wendi Robinson For this article I wanted to highlight a layout of my son as the baseball star he was this past season. I wanted the stars on the layout to stand out extra strong, so I added a couple different styles of stitching. First I punched out a larger focal star and added some twine on the star itself. Secondly, I fussy cut out some smaller stars and then used some embroidery thread and stitched star outlines around them. This helps to move your eye around the page, yet reiterate the star theme of the title and page.

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Country Charm: Weekend Fun (1515), Super Star (1511), Vintage Wallpaper (1514), Picnic Blanket (1509). Other: cardstock, twine, alphas, mist, and embroidery thread.

Celebrate U Card by Emily Branch This card focuses on using the negative punch of the star to highlight the shape. I also added a stamped sentiment in school-like cursive and a large letter sticker to give it that alpha quality. I chose a complementary color scheme of reds and greens. I incorporated the light values of the shade of red, found in pink dotted and lined paper. It helped draw attention to the stars.

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Country Charm: Strawberry Jam (1510), Floral Field (1507), Country Bloom (1505), Floral Field (1507); Sweet Tooth: Sweet Tart (1562), Sprinkles (1560). Other: star punch, vellum, twine, washi tape.

UR Great Card by Emily Branch Since school is right around the corner, I incorporated some lined paper in this encouraging card that you could give your favorite student before a big show, assignment or test. Who doesn't want to get a star on their assignment? This card gives you plenty, layered together for an extra dose of confidence! How can you use stars in your paper-crafting projects with GCD Studios paper?

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Country Charm: Farm Field Stripe (1506), Super Star (1511), Tiny Floral Border (1513); Sweet Tooth: Sugar Cookie (1561). Other: star punch, notepaper, bakers twine, ribbon, washi tape.

ABCs and 123s‌ We Love Learning! I think everyone has school on the brain in the month of September, so our focus was easy. The warm colors of Country Charm by Diana Kappa and a few cute cardboard letters are all you need. These letters have become so popular over this last year. From nurseries to our CHA winter 2012 booth, these babies are also a great gift for a new teacher and a new year of learning.

17 | gcdstudios.com gcdstudios.blogspot.com

Letter Instructions:

Can of Pencils Instructions:

1 Pick a color or two to match your papers and paint the whole letter.

1 Take on old can of veggies and clean it well.

2 Trace the shape of each letter onto your pattern papers. 3 Using scissors and a craft knife, cut out all the letters. I cut inside the line a little, so that it showed a thin area of red around the edge of my letters. 4 Glue the paper letters onto the cardboard letters.

2 Start with the base cardstock or pattern paper and cut down to size. 3 Glue on base and continue this process with the other papers, but scale them down in size. 4 Cut out some darling flowers and adhere them with pop dots. This will put a smile on any teachers face. gcd studios 09.2012 E-MAGAZINE | 18

Use It. For my page, I used the sketch in its original design. The photos I used were from my son on a school field trip where he was horseback riding. I kept a rustic look to my page by using colors which matched the photos perfectly. The main paper collections I used were a combination of GCD's Splendor and Country Charm. I accented my page with some punched out stars, stickers, and a cream banner. The background paper added to the outdoor feel along with the title stickers.

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Splendor, Country Charm, and Sweet Tooth Collections. by Pam Callaghan

Flip It. I flipped the sketch on its side. The sentiment piece is my focal (in place of the photo). As shown in the card, Country Charm collection has a beautiful color scheme (red, pink, blue, green, cream and a warm brown), basic patterns (dots and stripes) and some cool flower patterns great for fussy cutting.

Alter It. I used the framework of the sketch to create the background for my layout and placed smaller photos in the spaces originally slated for the photos. I also replaced one of the photos with a schedule card I created as a keepsake.

READER’S GALLERY Pure Happy Layout by Miriam Prantner I wanted to create a really CAS layout with these photos, and the Sweet Tooth line was perfect. So pretty, but not a completely pink confection, I love that there are blue and green and khaki highlights throughout. I cut a bunch of hexagons using the Creative Memories Custom Cutting System and arranged them in a partial grid. To add some texture to the layout, I added stitching around the hexagons.

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Sweet Tooth Collection.

Sunrise Layout by Leslie Davis Keeping with her theme of "V" is for Vellum, Leslie combines layers of sheer vellum with pattern papers and misting. See how to make it on September 26 on our blog.

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Country Charm & Splendor Collections; Cosmo Cricket, Stickers: Making Memories, Cosmo Cricket, Letters: Studio Calico, October Afternoon & Dear Lizzy, Brads: Basic Grey, Paper Clip: Amy Tangerine, Mists: Maya Roads Cream Metallic and Studio Calico Sunshine.

Lesson Learned Layout by Audrey Yeager Using the fun and vibrant papers of Flower Child, Audrey used an adorable alphabet overlay to finish the look. See how to make it on September 19th on our blog.

SUPPLIES: GCD Studios Pattern Papers: Flower Child: Hippie Plaid (1643), Wondering Geo (1638); Country Charm: Picnic Blanket (1509); Storybook: Gold Stars (1740). Other: alphabet transparency (Fancy Pants), yellow chevron and white stripes tranparencies (Hambly), mists (Maya Road).
