Kate’s academic achievements include earning membership in the National Honor Society during her sophomore year, Honor Roll each quarter, Scholars’ List and the elite Academic Top Ten three times! She is currently ranked 8th out of 376 students, holding an outstanding 4.538/4.0 GPA. Her extracurricular activities include soccer during freshman and sophomore years, academic team, pep band through junior year, marching band and symphonic band all four years, serving as sectional leader for band activities, and WYSE team junior and senior years.

Kate participated in NHS community service projects and at the band community service performances. In addition to all of her activities, Kate works at the Round Lake Jewel-Osco and has been promoted to cashier. She also enjoys listening to music and reading. Her plans for the future include enrolling in the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering to earn a degree in chemical engineering.

The Prairie State Achievement Examination or PSAE is the statewide high school achievement test for juniors, grade 11 students. It is the only statewide academic assessment that Illinois law requires public high school students to take in order to receive a diploma from any public high school. A junior must take the test in order to graduate from high school.

The PSAE consists of two parts - the ACT and Work Keys. Both scores are used to calculate whether a student meets state standards in reading and math. The PSAE tests four academic subjects: reading, mathematics, science and writing. All juniors will be tested on Wednesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 23, 2009.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION Advanced Placement Exams As part of the course curriculum, our students continue to prepare for the AP exams that will be administered later this spring. With a successful score, college credit may be earned at various colleges through this examination. A passing grade may help reduce college tuition for a particular course. We encourage all students enrolled in AP courses to take these exams. The cost for taking each exam is $86.00; checks should be made payable to Grant Community High School. If your child is taking multiple exams, please write one check for the total amount (2 exams, $172.00; 3 exams, $258.00). The Advanced Placement exams will be administered on the following days:

Students may pick up a registration form in the Front Office. The last day to sign up for these exams is Thursday, March 19, 2009. Your student may turn in the testing fee to the Front Office by this date. Once your student’s testing fee has been received, we will order their test(s) from The College Board.
WYSE TEAM The World Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Team competed in the annual statewide WYSE competition on Saturday, February 7. The goal of the WYSE team is to raise awareness and prepare students for the rigorous curriculum they would encounter in an engineering major. Students take tests in seven subject areas pertinent to science and engineering: mathematics, physics, chemistry, English, biology, computer science, and engineering graphics. A select group of 12 Grant students participated in the competition against other schools in the regional, with Alex Maskevich (computer science), Ben Ranes (computer science), Matt Peterson (engineering graphics), Kate Cloonan (English), and Katelynn Schlaman (English) advancing to the sectional round in their respective subject area. Stephanie Oehrlein also earned recognition for her impressive regional performance. The sectional will take place on Friday, March 13. Congratulations to all twelve participants!
Bonjour! Hola! It’s that time again to start planning our trips to France and Spain that we take every two years. We will be traveling during Spring Break of 2010, and would like to begin recruiting fellow travelers this month. Please have your student get the information from his/her teacher, or feel free to call or e-mail Madame Wilds or Señora Thompson. BOYS BASKETBALL
The Bulldogs currently have a 14-12 team record and are in intense preparation for the IHSA Regional Tournament.
The GCHS community celebrates our statequalifying Girls Bowling Team: Brianna Brugioni, Caitlin Loving, Serina Stow, Beth Bengtson, Lydia Wells, Alexis Capps, Cat Nicpon, and Becca Vlasaty! The team proudly captured 14th place (out of 24) at the IHSA State Tournament. On the first day of competition the team bowled excitingly well, highlighted by a string of five happy frames (that is 25 consecutive marks). Two individuals qualified to bowl on the second day of competition, Brianna Brugioni and Lydia Wells. Both bowled with heart and over average; out of more than 200 bowlers, Brianna Brugioni finished 19th and Lydia Wells 65th. Led by Coach (and GCHS bowling team alumnae) Beth Ann Miller, this team made GCHS history earning its way to the IHSA State Tournament by placing second in the sectional tournament. Brianna Brugioni captured the Sectional Champion title with her 1153 6-game total pinfall. In game #5, the team bowled the best team game of the tournament (and of the season) earning 1012 pins. Congratulations! We look forward to all interested girls sharpening skills this summer for another exciting season!
GIRLS BASKETBALL
ACT MATH SEMINAR UNDERSTANDING THE MATH PORTION OF THE ACT
The Grant varsity girls basketball team concluded their season with an overall record of 16 wins and 13 losses. Led by seniors Gina Cellucci, Amber Potts, Brittani Schisler, Alyssa Pasiewicz, and C.J. Hill, our girls basketball team exceeded expectations during this exciting and successful basketball campaign.
On Thursday, March 26, from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m., a 45 minute ACT Math Presentation will be offered free for all juniors in the Lecture Hall. This presentation will help students understand the mathematics portion of the ACT Assessment Exam given in April. The seminar will highlight test strategies to improve scores and advise how to use graphing calculators to maximize the best possible score on this important test.

Parents and students have the opportunity to purchase vehicle magnets to be used while our young, inexperienced, new drivers begin practicing their driving skills. These magnets will attach to a metallic surface, and then can be removed when the student driver is not driving. The cost is $3.00 per magnet and the choices are: STUDENT DRIVER, BE PATIENT NEW DRIVER, and CAUTION NEW DRIVER. Supplies are limited. It is well worth the $3.00 investment! A Season to Remember
The Varsity Cheerleading Squad finished their memorable and historical season this past February. The squad of twenty cheerleaders, ranging from freshmen through seniors, displayed their remarkable talent and skill proudly at the many competitions where they performed. History was made at the Lake Zurich Conference Championship on January 11 when the skilled squad went home as the Prairie Division Champions, a first in school history. To make the day even more exciting, they placed 2nd overall in the North Suburban Conference, defeating both Co-Ed and Large Varsity squads alike. They went home with the second place trophy at the Grayslake North Invite, losing the championship by less than one point. Although their Sectionals competition proved to be stressful and somewhat problematic, the difficulty level and exhibited talent overshadowed minor problems; they qualified for the IHSA State Finals, and managed to achieve an all time high score. The girls proudly represented Grant High School at the state finals, where they performed their routine flawlessly to prove that they had earned the right to be state qualifiers. The Varsity Cheerleaders are; Brandy Hatcher, Jessica Mamerow, Ashlee McCarten, Robin Rasmussen, Stephanie Baumeister, Anna Cerrone, Taryn Doherty, Nika Gigliotti, Erin Horvath, Shelby Koutas, Hope Lantz, Sarah Mirocha, Jen Schroeder, Kristin Tregenza, Nina Brown, Chelsea Carlson, Tianna Deligio, Delanie Olsen, Sara Mamerow and Ana Zitkus. They were coached by Veronica Hoehne. Congratulations on a remarkable season ladies!

SECOND STATE TITLE FOR LEE MUNSTER Junior Lee Munster recently won his second state wrestling title as a competitor in the 1711b. IHSA 3A State Championship in Bloomington, Illinois. His win capped off an impressive 47-0 campaign in which he also captured titles at the Barrington (32 teams), Glenbrook South (16 teams), Sycamore (16 teams), North Suburban Conference (14 teams), Regional and Sectional tournaments. En route to winning the state title, Lee defeated the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd ranked wrestlers in the state in succession. The victory makes Lee the current top ranked 1711b. junior in the Nation and ranks him 5th in the country overall at his weight class. He has verbally committed to attend Northwestern University and will continue to work hard in the off season in order to repeat his success. Congratulations Lee!
FIVE WRESTLERS QUALIFY FOR THE STATE INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT Our Wrestling Team qualified five wrestlers for the IHSA Individual State Tournament at the University of Illinois the weekend of February 20 & 21. The State qualifiers were Chaz Alex at 125 lbs, Roque Bustos at 130 lbs, Jason Montemayor at 135 lbs, Lee Munster at 171 lbs, and Carl Williams at HWT. The highlight of the tournament was Lee Munster capturing the IHSA State Championship at 171 lbs. Lee totally dominated the competition and captured his second career state title. Lee Munster is only a junior and is capable of winning three State Championships which would be an unprecedented accomplishment in the rich and heralded tradition of Grant wrestling.
GRANT WRESTLERS ADVANCE TO STATE DUAL-MEET TOURNAMENT The Bulldog Wrestling Team defeated New Trier High School 39-24 and advanced to the IHSA 3A State Team Tournament which was held on Saturday, February 28 at Illinois State University. Ben Soumar, Chaz Alex, Roque Bustos, Jason Montemayor, Nick Guenther, Tyler Becker, Lee Munster, and Jake Brown were victorious on the mat against New Trier. This is the fourth time Head Coach Ryan Geist has directed our dual-meet team to the “Elite Eight� level of athletic competition. During the illustrious career of Coach Geist, our Varsity Wrestling Team has had a remarkable dual-meet record of 214 wins and 33 losses.
