ministER’S WELCOME Welcome to the 35th annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon, as Queensland plays host to more than 28,000 participants from interstate and overseas. A sporting highlight on Queensland’s winter calendar, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon continues to go from strength to strength, growing to become Australia’s largest marathon event last year. This year, the Gold Coast will welcome athletes from countries across the world including Australia, Japan, Europe, Africa, America, New Zealand and Asia. Tourism and events are intrinsically linked and the Queensland Government has implemented a coordinated and strategic approach to attract visitors to the Gold Coast and Queensland – whether they come for holidays, conventions, to visit friends and relatives or events like the Gold Coast Airport Marathon. As we look forward to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, it is events like this marathon that reinforce the Gold Coast’s reputation as a premier sporting event destination. I would like to congratulate the organisers of this year’s marathon on delivering another fantastic event for the region and wish all athletes the very best of luck in the 35th Gold Coast Airport Marathon.

The Honourable Jann Stuckey Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games

GOLD COAST AIRPORT CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

OFFICIAL GUIDE

Gold Coast Airport this year celebrates our 11th year as naming rights sponsor of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, watching the event grow from 11,063 competitors in 2003 to 2012 hosting the largest number of finishers ever in an Australian full distance marathon. During this time we have witnessed too many memorable marathon moments to recount, but what never ceases to inspire us is the dedication, determination and efforts of the competitors across all events, from the Junior Dash to the 42.2km marathon. As the naming rights sponsor of the event we are proud to be a part of its continued success, attracting a significant number of intrastate, interstate and international visitors to the Gold Coast each year. As the gateway to one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations, Gold Coast Airport is the fifth busiest international airport in Australia and now welcomes more than 5.6 million passengers per year. Gold Coast Airport offers both domestic and international services to a variety of destinations including Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Newcastle, Adelaide, Perth, Cairns, Hobart, Mount Isa and Darwin (via Mount Isa). Gold Coast Airport has direct services to Japan (Osaka and Tokyo), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Singapore and New Zealand (Auckland and Christchurch). I’d like to take the opportunity to thank both competitors and the Gold Coast community for your continued support of this iconic event, and I wish you every success for your completion of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon and its associated events.

GETTING TO THE START LINE

Where israce the preview Race Precinct?

The Race Precinct is located at the Broadwater Parklands in Southport. It is where the start and finish lines are located and is the centre of all the action and atmosphere on race weekend. With huge numbers of people converging on the Race Precinct on race weekend, it is important for you to plan in advance how you will get to and from the Race Precinct. Whether you drive and park, catch a bus, get dropped off, or walk if you are staying nearby, give yourself plenty of time to get to the start line to do your warm-up. Remember, if you are not at the start area when the gun is fired, organisers may stop you from starting the race.

Pedestrian Crossings to the Race Precinct SCARBOROUGH ST

Pedestrian crossings on the Gold Coast Highway to access the Race Precinct will be located at Ada Bell Way (one crossing), Marine Parade (one crossing), Nerang Street (three crossings), Nind Street (three crossings) and North Street (one crossing).

RACE PRECINCT

OFFICIAL GUIDE

Broadwater Parklands

The centre of marathon action this weekend is in the Race Precinct at the Broadwater Parklands in Southport. This is where the start and finish lines for all races, one big screen for spectator viewing, runner services and post-race entertainment are all located.

Start Lines

There will be two start lines. The southern start line is located on the Gold Coast Highway adjacent to the Nerang Street intersection. This start line will be used for the full Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Wheelchair Marathon, Wheelchair 15km and the Southern Cross University 10km Run with all races heading south. The northern start line is located on the Gold Coast Highway adjacent to Marshall Lane and Welch Street. This start line will be used for the ASICS Half Marathon, Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge and the 4km and 2km Junior Dash with all races heading north. Please refer to the Race Precinct map for start line gate positions.

Finish Line

All races except for the Wheelchair 15km will finish on the eastern side of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, between the Aquatic Centre and the Broadwater. There will be a single finish chute with only one race finishing at the one time providing even more space and prestige for runners completing their race. The Wheelchair 15km will finish at the 15km point on the Gold Coast Airport Marathon course (approximately Fourth Avenue, Burleigh Heads).

Spectator Viewing

For those who are not running at this year’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon, we encourage you to support the participants along various points on the course. Construction works at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre are progressing well, however due to expected record crowds, we ask that runners restrict the number of their supporters coming to the Race Precinct. We suggest they watch the event from on-course vantage points from Runaway Bay to Burleigh Heads or follow a runner’s progress via our live results feed, webcast or the Gold Coast Airport Marathon App by ASICS.

Nu-Pure Recovery Area

After crossing the finish line, you will enter the Nu-Pure Recovery Area, which is restricted to participants only. Within this area you will find a medical centre, fruit, lemon-lime Endura Rehydration Formula and bottled Nu-Pure water. It

is here you will be rewarded for your efforts with a commemorative medal (all finishers) and a finishers’ shirt (Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km Run finishers only).

Junior Dash Recovery Area

To assist parents/guardians with the supervision and collection of their children after the completion of the Junior Dash races, an access pass will be provided with the race number of every Junior Dash entrant. There will be only one access pass allocated per child. This access pass will be required by the parent/guardian in order to access the Junior Dash Recovery Area. Within the Junior Dash Recovery Area there will be three meeting points positioned along the Parent/Guardian Waiting Area. We encourage each parent/guardian to let your child know which colour you will be standing near as a Meeting Point. The following colours will be used – blue, orange and green.

Event Lawn

There will be roving entertainment and race presentations on the event lawn on both Saturday and Sunday. A big screen with race vision will be situated right next to the main stage.

Suncorp Bank Information Booth

The Suncorp Bank Information Booth will be located at the Race Precinct event lawn on Saturday 6 July and Sunday 7 July. The booth will be for all event-related enquiries such as directions and maps, the central point for lost property, and includes computer terminals for you to look up live race day results.

Food & Beverages

A wide variety of food and drinks will be available from 6am on both Saturday and Sunday at the Race Precinct event lawn.

10 & 20 Year Clubhouse

Inductees into the 10 & 20 Year Clubs in 2013 can collect their commemorative polo shirts, certificates and trophies (20 Year Club only) from the 10 & 20 Year Clubhouse at the Rooftop Terrace of the Broadwater Parklands building located on the spine of the Race Precinct. Inductees will also have the exclusive opportunity to meet race ambassadors at scheduled times over race weekend.

Teams

THE 35th gold coast airport marathon

AirAsia flies in for Corporate Teams Challenge There has been significant growth in the number of corporate teams taking part in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in recent years and this year is no exception. They participate in Australia’s favourite holiday marathon to build company spirit, raise money for charity, promote health and fitness within their workforces or, more often than not, all three. Arguably the team travelling the greatest distance to participate is the world’s best low cost airline for five consecutive years, AirAsia. From its base in Malaysia, more than 22 runners will don the red and white running attire of the AirAsia Running Club, making it five years now that AirAsia has offered staff the opportunity to run in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon. The Corporate Teams Challenge is a popular part of the annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon, and this year, the 34 corporate teams will vie for largest team, most kilometres run and best team spirit with prizes from Runner’s World magazine. AirAsia concedes it will not be the largest team at this year’s event, but will be giving the best team spirit category a good shake. From flight attendants to engineers to guest services, there are representatives from right throughout the multi-award-winning AirAsia family, all with different running experience and abilities.

“we have managed to breed a bunch of fun and healthy employees with the AirAsia Allstars spirit” - Azran Osman-Rani, CEO AirAsia X AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman-Rani said AirAsia’s spirit and AllStar culture has brought it to where it is today. “Our contribution to the annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon has in many ways proven a win-win situation for both the organisers and the airline,” Mr OsmanRani said. “Not only does it allow runners to experience the AirAsia flight, but also a wonderful holiday destination for their travel. “And to top that, we have managed to breed a bunch of fun and healthy employees with the AirAsia Allstars spirit,” he said. Nineteen million travelers worldwide voted AirAsia as the World’s Best Low Cost airline for the fifth time in a row.

AirAsia was also named Best Low Cost Airline – Asia, for the fifth consecutive year in the same award ceremony while AirAsia X, the long haul arm of AirAsia, was named World’s Best Low Cost Premium Class and World’s Best Low Cost Premium Class Seat. AirAsia has been a long-time supporter of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon as the sponsor of the annual Legends Lunch which is being held this year again at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday 6th July from 12pm.

We’ll give you a good run for your money. Flying to over 80 destinations in Asia.

The Skytrax World Airline Survey is an annual global survey conducted by respected London-based aviation consultants Skytrax. The award was presented in Paris on 18th June. AirAsia came out tops in the independent survey that measures airlines’ product and service standards. AIR 2031_124x93 [P] GC MarathonGuide.indd 1

Sports Drink

Endura Sports Nutrition is the official supplier of on course hydration for the Gold Coast Airport Marathon. Lemon-lime Endura Rehydration Formula will be available at aid stations and in the Nu-Pure Recovery Area. Endura gels (citrus-flavoured) will also be supplied at the 30.5km aid station in the full Gold Coast Airport Marathon. Endura Rehydration Formula is designed to improve your performance through the rapid replacement of fluid and electrolytes. It is recommended that if you plan to use the lemon-lime Endura Rehydration Formula on race day, you should ‘train’ with this product prior to the event. Visit endura.com.au

Medical

Ambulances will be located along the course and there will be a medical centre in the Nu-Pure Recovery Area. For medical attention on course, please report to an aid station or ask a race marshal for assistance. If unable to complete the race, a vehicle following the final competitor will take participants to the Race Precinct at the earliest convenience.

Queensland Ambulance Service Queensland Ambulance Service has confirmed their policy on costs for interstate and international participants who use the ambulance service at the 2013 Gold Coast Airport Marathon. There are two service distinctions: • If a local, interstate or international participant is transported to the Race Precinct medical centre, there will be no charge. • If an interstate or international participant is transported offsite (to their choice of private or public hospital) they will be charged by Queensland Ambulance Service direct. Depending on the patient’s condition, they will be transported to the most suitable tertiary hospital, which also includes Brisbane hospitals and could include an air service. This service would be free for Queensland residents. Participants are made aware of the charges if their medical condition allows for the understanding of the transport costs. Some states have reciprocal arrangements with Queensland as do some private health funds. Participants are urged to check with their state ambulance service or private health fund to see if they would be covered for ambulance transport in Queensland.

Race Policies

• Roller blading, skating, cycling, rope skipping and nordic pole walking are not permitted in any race. • Animals are not permitted to accompany runners or walkers in any race. • Racing wheelchair competitors are welcome to compete in the Wheelchair Marathon and Wheelchair 15km, but for safety reasons are unable to compete in the Half Marathon, 10km Run or Junior Dash events. Wheelchair participants are allowed in the Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge in day chairs only. Hand-cranked cycles are not permitted in any event. Contact Sporting Wheelies & Disabled Association for more information on phone (07) 3253 3333.

Race Etiquette

In the interest of providing a safe and enjoyable event experience for everyone, you should be mindful of race etiquette: • The use of iPods and mp3 players are discouraged in all races for the safety of all participants. • Always follow the directions of all race officials and emergency service personnel.

• Prams are only permitted in the Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge and must start at the back of the field. While an entry form must be completed for both the child and the parent/guardian, and submitted at the Registration Centre, there is no charge for the child. If parents/guardians would like the child to receive the participant rewards or would like the child to walk with them, they must pay the entry fee for the child. • A parent/guardian is permitted to accompany a child for free in the 2km Junior Dash only. The parent/guardian must also complete an entry form to submit at the Registration Centre and will then receive an identification pass to allow them to start. Parents are not permitted to accompany runners in the 4km Junior Dash.

• Position yourself in your designated Start Zone to allow a smooth start for all participants. • Participants who are walking in the Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge must start from the rear of the field. • Do not stop or change directions suddenly. • Keep to the left of the course to allow people to pass on the right.

CUT OFF POLICY

OFFICIAL GUIDE

Cut Off Policy

SUNDAY 7 JULY

Each event of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon has an official cut off time in which participants must complete their race. These cut-off times are enforced to ensure slower participants do not impede other races and that roads reopen to the public in accordance with event permits. To ensure participants starting from the back of the field are not disadvantaged, a start line allowance has been applied to selected races. It is important to note that the start line allowance is not an extension of the official cut off time and it remains the participant’s responsibility to ensure they finish with a net time within the official cut off time. Official cut off times, start line allowances and selected locations for enforcement are detailed below in race specific sections. Course officials may issue warnings on-course and have the authority to remove participants from the race at any of the cut-off locations when a participant is behind the cut off time and their safety or event progress is compromised. The kilometre pace required to finish within the cut-off time has been listed for each race. All participants must finish within cut off times to avoid disqualification: SATURDAY 6 JULY Southern Cross University 10km Run

Entertainment

Spectators

For those who are not running at this year’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon, we encourage you to support the participants along various points on the course. Construction works at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre are progressing well for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, however due to expected record crowds, we ask that runners restrict the number of their supporters coming to the race precinct. We suggest they watch the event from on-course vantage points

from Runaway Bay to Burleigh Heads or follow a runner’s progress via our live results feed, webcast, Facebook or the Gold Coast Airport Marathon App by ASICS.

On Course Entertainment

One of the many great features of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon is the entertainment that lines the course adding to the experience of the runners and the festival atmosphere. Here are some suggested locations to enjoy the entertainment and support the runners on Sunday 7 July:

OFFICIAL GUIDE 2012 - An event record of 28,224 took part across all races including the most finishers ever in an Australian marathon race (5,122). This added additional gloss to the performances of Gold Coast Airport Marathon race winners Alemayehu Shumye from Ethiopia (men) and Kaori Yoshida from Japan (women). Following the success of the 2012 event, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon was awarded an IAAF Road Race Bronze Label for 2013 elevating it to one of the premier marathon races in the world. This was the first time an Australian marathon race achieved this status. 2011 – The breaking of a 22-year-old race record and the fastest ever non-games marathon in Australia cemented the Gold Coast Airport Marathon as having arguably Australia’s fastest marathon course. Kenyan Nicholas Manza’s marathon win in 2:10:01 was the third fastest marathon ever run in Australia, bettered only by Rob de Castella and Juma Ikangaa’s 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games marathons. A record 24,725 people took part with 5,086 of those in the full marathon. 2010 - Victorian Lisa Weightman set a new women’s half marathon race record of 1:09:00, while local Michael Shelley broke the race record with his 10km run victory. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon was inducted into the Queensland Tourism Awards Hall of Fame for winning the Best Major Event and Festival for three successive years. 2009 - The closest marathon finish in the event’s history saw Western Australian Lauren Shelley hold on to edge out fast-finishing Queenslander Roxie Schmidt by a metre. John Wishart from the Sunshine Coast became the first runner to be inducted into the 30 Year Marathon Club. 2008 - The 30th anniversary of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon saw over 21,000 people take part. ASICS developed a special Gold Coast running shoe to commemorate the occasion. The event won the Best Major Event and Festival at the Queensland Tourism Awards.

HISTORY & MILESTONES 1992 - Benson Masaya won the men’s half marathon in 1:01:16 which is still the race record today. 1991 – The marathon moved from Broadbeach to the Broadwater Parklands. 1989 - Victorian Brad Camp won the Gold Coast Marathon in 2:10:11 – a time that would stand as the race record for 22 years. 1985 - Channel 0 provided the first television broadcast of the Gold Coast Marathon with the commentary led by Bruce McAvaney, Rob Readings and Raelene Boyle. 1984 - The marathon moved from Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach. Brisbane's Pat Carroll won the first of his four Gold Coast Marathons. 1982 - New Caledonia's Alain Lazare became the first overseas competitor to win the Gold Coast Marathon. 1981 - The marathon moved from Evandale Parklands to Surfers Paradise. Margaret Reddan, a Gold Coast mum, won the first of her four Gold Coast Marathons. 1979 - The first Gold Coast Marathon was held on 2 September with the start and finish at Evandale Parklands. 691 runners took part in a marathon, half marathon and fun run. 1978 - The Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise established a series of clinics to educate the local community about health and fitness and train to complete a marathon within a year.

2006 - The event hosted Australia’s five sub 2 hour 10 minute marathon legends – Rob de Castella, Steve Moneghetti, Lee Troop, Pat Carroll and Derek Clayton. 2003 - The 25th anniversary of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon. Alison Coleman became the first woman to enter the 20 Year Marathon Club. 2002 - The start and finish precinct moved back to the Broadwater Parklands from Runaway Bay. Gold Coast Airport signed on as major sponsor starting from the 2003 event. 2001 - Event entries dropped to 7,960. Events Management Queensland took over the management of the Gold Coast Marathon confirming the future of one of Australia's premier long distance events. 1999 - The event moved from the Broadwater Parklands to the Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay. 1998 - A field of more than 11,000 took part in the 20th anniversary race. Brian McMillan became the first runner to enter the 20 Year Marathon Club. 1997 - Bev Lucas set a world record time in the marathon for women age 50-plus with a time of 2:44:12. Cable sports network ESPN telecast the event for the first time in America.

Conditions apply - Offer expires 31.07.13

1993 - Japan's Eriko Asai set the current women's race record in the Gold Coast Marathon of 2:29:29. Australia's long distance running great Steve Moneghetti and Ethiopia's Tadesse Gebre sensationally dead-heated in the half marathon.
