HESTEC

On behalf of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, I invite you to become a partner in HESTEC, the Hispanic Engineering, Science, and Technology Week, an annual celebration that engages thousands of middle and high school students, educators and parents. The week is filled with interactive educational exhibits, dynamic robotics competitions, inspiring speakers and hands-on activities, all designed to inspire students to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. In 2016, UTRGV celebrated the 15th anniversary of HESTEC with events in Edinburg, Brownsville and Harlingen. Throughout its history, HESTEC has had an impact on more than a million students, educators and families by exposing them to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. We are proud that our program has been recognized twice as a “Bright Spot in Hispanic Education” by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. HESTEC would not be possible without the support of our generous partners in government, education and corporate America. The investment you make in HESTEC is an investment in our students and the future of the Rio Grande Valley. I invite you to join us. With your support, we will prepare the next generation of students who will Change the World through STEM.

Guy Bailey, UTRGV Founding President

HESTEC

Sixteen years ago, an idea became a reality – an idea driven by a need and a vision to prepare students in the Rio Grande Valley to meet the demands of the evolving workforce. Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) was formed in 2002 to bring together corporate America, the federal government and education entities in a synergistically powerful alliance that would spur greater awareness of the STEM fields among Hispanic students in South Texas, support the increase of students in these fields nationwide, and promote the importance of postsecondary education. Since its inception, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s HESTEC has grown into a week-long program that has: • Affected more than one million people. • Garnered the support of more than 45 corporate and federal partners nationwide. • Been recognized (2015 and 2016) as a “Bright Spot in Hispanic Education” by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. • Featured internationally recognized speakers like Michael Dell, Dr. Michio Kaku, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Paul Rodriguez, Soledad O’Brien, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Dr. Bernard Harris and Albert Manero, to name a few.
