GDCTA MEMBER TO JOIN ELITE CLUB HONORING SENIOR RIDERS AND HORSES Robin Peterson of Demorest, Georgia, will be
inducted into special group of senior dressage riders and horses on August 25th at the Oxer Farm Schooling Show in Clermont, Georgia. The ages of Robin and her horse, Cupid’s Cash, qualify them to become members of The Dressage Foundation's Century Club. The Century Club recognizes dressage riders and horses whose combined ages total 100 years or more. Robin is 73 years old, and Cupid’s Cash is 28. In addition to having ages totaling 100 or more, horse and rider perform a dressage test of any level at a dressage show and are scored by a dressage judge. The Dressage Foundation provides a Century Club ribbon and wall plaque to each horse and rider team. Local dressage clubs, family and friends help to make the ride into a celebratory event. The Century Club was formed at The Dressage Foundation in 1996, at the suggestion of noted dressage judge and instructor, Dr. Max Gahwyler. The intent was to encourage older dressage riders to remain active in the sport. Since that time, the Century Club has grown into a meaningful and popular endeavor and has more than 300 members to-date. TDF's Century Club is sponsored by Platinum Performance. YOUTH CORNER GDCTA Youth Council - This Month
The GDCTA Youth Council has been busy planning the GDCTA Youth Educational Clinic set for Saturday, August 4th at the Summer Finals Schooling Show. The clinic will feature lectures on the topics of USDF rules, musical freestyles, and scribing. There will also be a hands-on, interactive demo on braiding and show grooming. Riders interested can email Liz Molloy at missliz@taramiaridingschool.com with their entry form or sign up in the show office. Entry form is located on the GDCTA website and GDCTA Youth Facebook page. We hope to see you there!
COMING SOON - The GDCTA Youth Council will host a USDF Youth Team Competition at the Labor Day Classic recognized dressage show on September 1-2. Teams consist of at least three riders. Each team must work together to accomplish a scavenger hunt and participate in a stall-decorating contest. Awards are tallied based on team participation and average scores from the Saturday dressage competition. Mark your calendars and join us for two full days of fun and teamwork!

By Penny Morse The Area lll Eventing Championships is one of the events I work on throughout the year. Getting the right vendors; making sure there is entertainment and the biggest job of all, having enough volunteers so the show runs smoothly! While everyone wanders around enjoying the event, there is that ‘someone’ running around like a mad dog, hoping it all goes right! 2018 was a very successful year. This year it was held over here days, which made the volunteers happier and took the stress off the organizers and the riders. The weekend before is a regular horse trials, and it was hot, but due to the exceptional amount of rain this summer, the conditions were perfect. This was the start of the build up to the Championships. Tuesday evening there was the Twilight Jumper Show, with super conditions and a great group of riders, all excited for the week. July 4th was celebrated at the lake, with fireworks and a cookout, getting everyone in a party mood. By Thursday the horses were coming in and the Championship riders were ready for their Dressage rides Friday morning. Once again, the weather was kind, and the Friday went well. The Official Opening of the Championship started Friday evening with the Opening Ceremonies. The Championship Riders danced their way into the arena where they stood for the National Anthem and watching the Flag being carried by Anthea Shelton from The Coweta County 4H. Then it became time for the Bouncy Ball Races! Yes, there is nothing like starting the event off
with a no holds barred Bouncy Ball contest. It was not an easy race. They had to bounce over a jump pole, get an apple out of a bucket of water with their teeth only, and then bounce back to their team, and tag the next rider. With four in a team, it involved a certain amount of questionable unsportsmanlike behavior, but the crowd screamed with delight and laughter as the riders bounced themselves over the course! There were ten teams, and four qualified for the final. As the rain gently sprinkled upon us, cooling the air, the fun completion was won by the team from Jade Anderson Eventing who accepted their Chocolate Basket with delight.

The girls sponsored by Mags Mobile Tack Shop won the ‘Best Dressed’ Team. Rain prevented the fun from returning on the Saturday, but we will repeat the fun in the future and all the Bouncy Ball Horses finished unscathed and returned to their barn, ready to come out again another day!
After the Friday night fun, Saturday was Cross Country for the Championship riders. The rain shower the night before had made the conditions perfect. The course was tough and long, but as long as the rider paid attention and the horse was fit, it was an exciting course to ride. There were some spills, but all in all the riders fared well and returned to the skies opening up when they were all in.

Sunday was Stadium Jumping Day, and it was exciting to see all the riders warming up and getting ready to compete for that first prize. There is always that anticipation, that even going into the last phase of the competition with poles in hand, it is never a sure thing. There were lots of ooohs and ahhhs from the crowd as some of the poles stayed in place and some were not so forgiving! At the end of the day, our local riders had done us proud! Kaitlyn Brittendall won the Junior Novice Championships on Blyth's Madeline GS. Mary Bess Davis, on Firestone, finished second, in the Training Championships Division and Julie Richards also bringing home the red ribbon on CS Carrera in the Preliminary Championships division. On Friday, July 6th, I attended the Ticket to Ride event. The competition is a hunter/jumper show that benefits the Mustang and Wild Horse Rescue of Georgia (MWHR). Last year at this event, I rode my mustang Hocus Pocus in a dressage demo, but this year I attended to support other ambassadors who exhibited their horses in an array of disciplines. A few trainers brought their mustangs to the competition and demonstrated the versatility of the breed. GDCTA member, June Brewer, showed off the breed’s capabilities in the dressage ring. Her horse, RU Marley (Roo), has competed to Fourth Level and was June’s equine partner that helped her earn her USDF Bronze Medal. Roo completed his pattern at Ticket to Ride with natural finesse and submission. Together, they looked elegant. Erica Eades brought Basil, a four-year-old mustang mare with whom she completed the 2016 Junior Mustang Makeover. Erica exhibited Basil on the long line, maneuvering her through cones and over jumps. Afterward, she displayed Basil’s favorite trick of lying down on command, and she allowed us to share in watching Basil’s sixth ride under saddle. Basil demonstrated the easy personality of the breed and its trainability. The demonstration brought a light-hearted, fun feel to the event, drawing in lots of spectators. Later, Sophie Clark demonstrated liberty work with one of MWHR’s adoptable horses, Seger. The executive director of the rescue, Elizabeth Montgomery, explained that Seger lost a lot of confidence when he was brought in; however, through work with Sophie, he has come out of his shell and now excels through in-hand liberty work. Sophie plans to have Seger under saddle by the end of the year. It was amazing to watch the two together, working off of each other’s cues. Along with the demonstrations, MWHR hosted a tack sale and silent auction, each benefiting the rescue. I shopped around the sale, picking up some items for my horses and supporting the great cause. My horses got fly masks and bell boots, which allowed a horse at MWHR to receive the care and comfort they need. 12
But that is not all, Ticket to Ride also hosted a series of fun games that all supported the rescue. In Ride-A-Buck, riders rode their horses through hard transitions while attempting to keep a twenty dollar bill between their leg and the horse. Also, there were bouncy horses. Riders raced on the “horses� bouncing their way over jumps. I enjoyed every moment of my time at Ticket to Ride. There was much to be learned from the experience. Each demo was different, demonstrating the versatility of the wild horse.
Every event played its own role in helping MWHR, but it all adds up in the end. It was an amazing fundraiser for a very worthwhile cause. Every little bit helps the Mustang and Wild Horse Rescue of Georgia change lives for more horses in need and continue to spread the word about mustangs. GDCTA Board Meeting Overview June 18, 2018
May meeting was called to order on May 21, 2018 at Shannondale Farm. Board members in attendance were Caren Caverly, Peri Lambros, Liz Malloy, Joanne Morse, Susan Collins, Ken Berry, Erin McCloud, Rebecca Bowman, Amanda Garner, and Peter West. Treasurer’s Report – May showed a profit. VP of Dressage – Arthur Kottas Clinic showed a nice profit. The Laura Graves clinic was the biggest that we have done so far with 140 auditors between both days. This clinic was also a profit. Laura has agreed to come back next year. VP of Combined Training – The Stephen Bradley Clinic was hosted at Poplar Place Farm. All that were in attendance appeared to have a great time. Poplar was great to work with and were very accommodating. This clinic was financially a loss. Membership – We are exactly where we were this time last year. Youth – A motion was made to offer a Children’s FEI rider award for the 2019 award year. This would mean creating a whole new division due to the difficulty difference between Childrens and Juniors. The motion was passed to include for next year’s awards. o We had 4 members make the team for NAYRC. A motion was made to offer each kid that made a team for Dressage or Eventing a $500 scholarship. Kids must write a letter of intent to the board and attend a meeting at the end of the year to talk about their experience. Sponsorship – DeNiro has committed to a sponsorship. Regionals – Several vendors are already committed. Applications are up on the website. o We have to replace some walkie talkies before this show and are actively searching avenues to get the best deal. o An inventory of the dressage rings will be taken at the August horse show so we can replace any broken parts.
Kudzu – Leah Marks Clinic coming up June 30th at Foxberry Farm and is full. Erin McCloud Clinic is on July 14th and there are still a few spots left. Grant – Deadline was June 15th. Winners will be announced on July 1st. Yearbook – Yearbook has been printed and sent to the mailer. It looks awesome and has given us a wonderful base to build on for next year. Nominating Committee – Amanda Garner passed out a list of people that are potentials for board members.

Editorial contributions of 600 words or less (accompanied by photos with permission to publish, if applicable) are welcomed although publication cannot be guaranteed. GDCTA Collected Remarks welcomes submissions of quality color dressage and sport-horse photographs. All mounted riders must be wearing appropriate headgear (a safety helmet, a derby, or a top hat). We also accept submissions of action and conformation shots of breeding stock and dressage sport-horse breeding classes. Interesting and creative photos that capture special moments between horses and riders also will be considered. Photos must be accompanied by complete captions, including the full names of all subjects. For print, only high resolution (300dpi) Jpeg or PDF files will be accepted. Photographers whose work is published will receive proper credit, notification when the issue is published online. The editors are happy to review unsolicited submissions of photographs. Kathy Connelly for a Dressage
Clinic on November 3-4, 2018, at USEF Elite Training Center Shannondale Farm in Milton, Georgia. Kathy Connelly is a highly accomplished international dressage rider, trainer, coach, S level judge, and popular clinician. She was a member of the United States Equestrian Team at the World Cup in Sweden and trained extensively in Germany with Herbert Rehbein and in Vienna with Ernst Bachinger, the former director of the Spanish Riding School. She trains out of Elysium Farm in Harvard, Massachusetts, and at Havensafe Farm in Wellington, Florida. She is well known for her extensive experience both in the US and Europe for training piaffe and long lining. Many successful international riders have trained with Kathy. Her horses and her students have competed on Olympic teams, at the World Cup, the World Games, the Pan American Games, the Canadian World Cup and the United States Young Rider teams. In recognition of her numerous contributions to the sport, GDCTA is eager to welcome Kathy Connelly here to Georgia for this clinic.
