Dearest Rider Tribe, Fall begins this month! Can you believe we've made it this far?! We are just a hop, skip and jump away from Halloween, clipping, and (dare I say it?!) blankets. Pumpkins, pumpkin spice everything, hot apple cider, warm sweaters, fluffy scarves, boots… these are also some of the things we have to look forward to in the coming weeks and months. The 2020 horse show season ends on September 30th with the 2021 show season beginning in earnest October 1st! If you are participating in the Awards programs, make sure to check the Rider Status to check if we have all your scores counted. Schooling show riders will be on the page now with USEF/USDF/USEA riders coming later when they are sent to us digitally from the organizations.

Notes

•We are still looking for a Volunteer Coordinator to help with events, primarily the horse shows. •Elections are coming in October! Please vote when you receive the email with the link to the ballot. We will share the biographies of all our candidates in the next newsletter. Also, December 1st begins the new GDCTA membership year. You can join now and your membership is good for both 2020 and 2021 through November 30, 2021. If you have horse shows in October and have not yet joined/renewed, do it now to have your sccores count for the 2021 show season. •Because 2020 is an unusual year, we only have one more clinic scheduled this year. It's a big one, though! Laura Graves will be at Shannondale Farm in Milton December 12 and 13. We will be allowing a small number of auditors so watch the website for the details. Let me take a moment here to thank all of you who already volunteer and participate and sponsor GDCTA and our events. I will say, as the voice of the Board, you are appreciated! We do this for you.

In Loving Memory We would like to extend to you our heartfelt condolences to members who have recently lost loved ones. Words fall short of expressing our sorrow for your loss. A person or an animal that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts, through us, they live on. Wishing you peace and angels to bring comfort and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. Our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy.

We try to get everything right, but given that we are human beings writing and editing huge amounts of copy and photos, often we don’t. It's come to our attention that we left out a photo in the recent A Year in Review yearbook. We didn't mean to but it happened. So, we would like to include that photo here. Collegiate Transitions

That is who the GDCTA Collegiate Best Score Award aims to serve,” says Amanda Garner, chair, GDCTA collegiate program. Wishing all our college-bound families the best with this new adventure. Exciting and emotional times are in store for all of you as this new chapter begins.

By JD and Lisa Tyre There were many long days....both hot and cold....in the dust and dirt....distances traveled....Hotels, campgrounds, barns....every imaginable (many UNimaginable) expense from new shoes every month to color coordinated everything (and that changed too)....trucks and trailers....and a stubborn horse fighting at both, then a soft nudge or a nibble in apology.... All for hearing her name on the loudspeaker as her turn begins and a few ribbons....I regret none of it....As Rachel packs up ALL that stuff to head to college this week, I look back at the friends that are family, the barn that became home, and the education Rachel already received that prepares her for life better than anything I've ever seen....I'm sad for the change but so ever grateful for the years that gave ME purpose, inspiration, and taught me how to be the best kind of dad: a Barn Dad. I'd do it all again....Our last show at Chatt gives an idea of what I will miss....if this is just starting for you and yours, savor it - it goes by way too fast.... Upon Arrival We set up the new digs, taste-tested every restaurant in town, finally got Barney after his tour of the southeast, and said our tearful goodbyes. Praying for Rachel as she embarks on this new adventure. May she receive every good gift the Lord has in store for her. High Ho, Barney. Away! August is a move out/move in month! Parents across the country have been moving their teens into their college dorms. If you’re one of those parents and one of our members, you may also have packed up the horse and all their gear for college too. We at GDCTA are so thankful we have had you in our family that we don’t want to lose you! To address this transition, We have a Collegiate Awards program “to recognize those students who, for various reasons (time, financial status, skill level, horse availability, etc.), are not able to pursue competing at the rated level, but still enjoy the sport.

I really do love a good before and after. But I do remember it just two moments in time. The body of the horse (or even us riders!) is always changing and adapting as it tries to maintain the elusive perfect balance. The question becomes, Is the change in the body a positive or negative one? Will it benefit the horse or be detrimental long term? This horse was going well in work for the most part, but the rider was noting the fact the horse preferred to weight the left front and not give through the right ribcage. As you can see, the ribcage was held over to the right giving the left side a flatter appearance. The right shoulder was being pushed forward to accommodate the ribcage. The sacrum was tilted slightly to the right and the front part was pulled left (bottom going right). In the session, I worked and released restrictions in the hyoid, temporals, sternum/thoracic outlet, left scapula, left ribcage, diaphragm, left thoracolumbar fascia, psoas both sides, lumbral sacral junction, and sacrum. I will be interested to see how the horse does until the next session and where their body settled. As much as I love the changes I saw after our session, the real test will be how the new movement changes the balance long term.

Trot-For-Teal Virtual Dressage Series benefiting Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance Competitor Tent, the app for competitive riders, is teaming up with the GDCTA again to launch our second virtual charity series, this time in show format. “The Trot-For-Teal Virtual Dressage Series benefiting Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance. This series will continue to allow riders to compete from home during this current pause in the competition calendar and like our first series, make a difference in a time when many of us feel helpless to affect the current crisis. Competitor Tent hopes to help riders continue to work toward their goals and compete safely during these difficult times. The series has monthly shows running from July through December 2020 (September 19, October 24, November 14, and December 19 – all can be found on Equestrian Entries). Riders will register through Equestrian Entries the Monday before each show weekend, then video their test and upload it from home by Tuesday before each show weekend (the day after entries close). A panel of great judges will then judge the tests and results will be available through the Competitor Tent app (download the free app at the Apple App Store) and tests will be emailed and physically mailed to competitors. For this series, high point awards will be provided over the course of the series in three categories: classical dressage, eventing dressage and western dressage. See class list below. Competitor Tent encourages riders competing in this show series to follow social distancing guidelines as suggested or required by local authorities. More information on logistics: https://competitortent.com/virtual1/

Note to FEI riders: If you are planning to enter a live FEI competition within six months, please do not

enter this series due to FEI restrictions on unsanctioned showing. For more information on this, please contact us.

YOUTH CORNER I want to congratulate this year’s GDCTA Dressage Seat Equitation Medal Finals winners and once again share the story of how this class came about.

After being inspired by an article in our USDF magazine which featured Region 2's Rebecca Rebekah Mingari who had won the National DSE that year, the article stressed Equitation is not just for the Hunters and directed our attention to the rider’s marks under the collective marks on EVERY dressage test we ride. EQUITATION MATTERS as it is the rider’s influence through their position while they ride. So, six years ago, I brought the Dressage Seat Equitation class to GDCTA and invited all the schooling show hosts to schedule the classes. Now we have a generation of riders who are used to riding DSE in their schooling shows. Realize that the DSE winners have earned this prestigious award out of every schooling show held all year long. There were qualified kids who did not attend this show. We have brought it to the attention of the schooling show kids in prep as quoted by Roz Kinzler, A natural progression into the recognized show world. You could come just for equitation if you wanted to try a recognized show. The DSE class is featured in our Dressage4kids Youth Festival as the third element of our competition in addition to reading an age-based reading assignment and riding one dressage test which combined determine an overall winner. Lendon Gray stresses, This class levels the playing field and rewards the rider with the correct position on any type of horse. USDF Region 3 had the largest participation in DSE in the country last year, and as we set our sights on Lamplight and the National Championship, three GDCTA youth members won the semi-finals to head into the Finals. Congratulations to Maren Hanson, Alice Burley for the 13 and under with Caroline McQueen in 14 and up. Can't wait to cheer you all on!! I so enjoy watching our youth riders grow over the years and it starts at the grass roots. Liz Molloy GDCTA Youth Committee Region 3 NAYC Coordinator/Junior Chef d'Equipe

GDCTA Strong at Festival of Champions On August 18-23 almost 175 combinations were invited to Festival of Champions at Lamplight in Wayne, IL. USEF was determined to go ahead with the Dressage National Championship for FEI levels as well as young horses and dressage seat equitation despite the many events previously canceled for Covid-19.

by Christie Hansen

The week begins with vet checks/jogs for most divisions and then a series of tests which are then totaled for overall champions for the year. All riders completed a successful jog and were permitted to proceed. In the Young Horse division Jason Canton had two entries from Hillock Dressage in AL but unfortunately Jason was injured early in the week

and was forced to withdraw. He was able to stay on as coach for his FEI Children's rider representing Collecting Gaits Farm. Jason tried valiantly to carry on, but the injury forced him to sideline. Much more to come from this outstanding rider and horses. The jogs can be exceedingly early in the week for some riders allowing additional schooling opportunities. One of the incredible perks of qualification for the event is the opportunity for riders to GDCTA had an extraordinarily strong group invited. Only those ranked in the top of their divisions (usually top 12) are invited. Some divisions expanded a bit more because the NAYC international championship was canceled. Dressage Seat Equitation Finals only invite the Champion and Reserve from each Semi-Final held at Regional Championships the previous year. GDCTA proudly had 2 riders in 13 and Under with Region 3 Champion Maren Elise FouchĂŠ-Hanson and Reserve Champion Alice Burley as well as Caroline McQueen Champion 14-18 vying for national honors.

The show grounds are among the most beautiful you will see and perfect to showcase the beauty of dressage.

work with the US Coaching staff including Charlotte Bredahl (who had to sit out after a recent surgery), Christine Traurig, Guenter Seidel, and Youth DevelopDevelopment Coach George Williams. These coaches were made available upon request and as available. As competition began, the first big GDCTA winner was Becca Roman in the Brentina Cup. She started off with placing 4th, then 3rd, then a huge 2nd place finish in the Grand Prix Freestyle on Ultimo secured her overall 3rd place finish in the US. To qualify and compete they must earn at least two scores from FEI Grand Prix 16-25 Test and at least two scores from the Intermediate II Test

as well as one Grand Prix Freestyle score. Then they must be in the top rankings of those to be invited to the championship. Becca has attended Festival once before, and said: Even with the masks and social distancing requirements, it was still a fantastic show. The USEF/USDF staff and volunteers all did an amazing job, and the show ran very smoothly. I was lucky enough to be in Florida to qualify before most of the shows got canceled, so I finished qualifying in March with just 2 shows since the qualifying requirements got changed. I train with Karen Lipp and have been training with her for about a year and a half now, she has done an incredible job helping me and my horse. My horse's name is Ultimo, he is a 19-year-old KWPN. I have had him for almost 6 years and have done Young Riders on him and I competed in the Brentina Cup division at Lamplight for the first time in 2018. The next rider also represents Stahl810 and trainer Karen Lipp, GDCTA member Caroline McQueen and Mandolin RH. This pair earned an average of 65%+ and a 9th place finish in the FEI Junior Division. They also qualified for the Dressage Seat Medal Finals with an 84% winning the semi-finals class at regionals. They went on to compete in the large 14-18 Dressage Seat Final on the last day to a Bronze medal Equitation finish! Caroline also recently received the USDF Bronze medal. Caroline said: I have owned Mandolin RH (Mazi), a Hanoverian mare, for a year and have been working with her and my trainer Karen Lipp for 8 months. Mazi is one of the most willing and sweetest horses I’ve ever met. I’m very grateful to have accomplished all that we have together in such a short time!

ever championship went! In the Junior Division scoring an average of around 65% to put us 9th in the nation out of an incredibly competitive group of riders and in the DSE 14-18 scoring a 79% to give us the 3rd ranking and Bronze medal. A huge thank you to Karen Lipp and Katharine McQueen without you guys none of this would be possible!

Karen Lipp, while coaching two top GDCTA contenders, also made a fantastic showing herself with her own Infinity in the Developing Prix St. Georges. Karen built a beautiful facility of her own, Stal 810, with husband Tony Bordwell and the couple was able to host her coach Charlotte Bredahl earlier prior to the event, though Charlotte was unable to come herself this year. Karen and Infinity came in ranked 14th and had lovely rides to finish 4th in the US! Karen said on Facebook: I’m amazed at his focus and try for a 7 year old, thank you Charlotte Bredahl for your help and Dirk Fiechter for the horse and my husband Tony Bordwell and my groom Rolfi Gabriel and my clients for cheering it was a wonderful day!

In a year of having this horse in my life, I couldn’t be happier with how far we have come together. We were able to qualify for the FEI Junior Division and the DSE 14-18, and I can’t believe how amazing my first25

The largest GDCTA contingent could be found in the FEI Children's divison where 1/3 of the riders were GDCTA Youth. Four riders represented with even more members competing who nearly made the championship division as well. This turnout has been promoted by long time GDCTA Youth advocate Elizabeth Molloy and Dressage4Kids and with much success. Rider Maren Elise Fouché-Hanson came in ranked number one with Kat Fuqua, Ella Traylor, and Tessa Geven all in the top 12 in the US. They were faced with a new challenge at the championship, the international judging system would be used for the first time.

Maren was one of 2 riders in the division that had the opportunity to compete at a CDI (International competition) in Florida this year and had been scored under the new system that includes a Quality score and a Technical score averaged counting 50% each during each ride. 2 judges on the side judge equitation and accuracy jointly. Four scores are given including Position and Seat, Effectiveness of the Aids, Precision and General Impression. The judge at C judges the usual technical marks. This judging system did not always permit the top scoring technical ride to finish on top. The purpose is for Children 12-14 in this division to focus on seat, aids, accuracy, and harmony over rewarding the best quality horse alone. This scoring had been used only in International shows until the Final but will be the permanent judging system in the US moving forward. Children's Team Test judge Krysti Wysoki stated:

improvement of youngsters riding dressage around the world. It’s such a great concept…. Now the kids still get their test results for how they rode each movement, but they also get good feedback on their riding skills. The highest score won’t necessarily go to the fanciest horse in the class. It’s all about their riding basics.

Overall, Maren Elise Fouché-Hanson and her own 25-year-old pony, In My Feelings, placed 2nd in Team Test and 1st in Individual Test with their personal best for an overall 75.236% and US Reserve Champion placing. Maren and Drake qualified and finished 6th overall last year followed by an eventing championship 9th place finish. Maren was provided USEF Coach George Williams for the event but has been a working student of judge Sandy Osborn since just before last year’s Festival. Maren hopes to continue with her pony Drake if he is able, possibly in FEI Ponies, while working with her new Dressage4Kids horse Estremadura MVH in the Junior division hoping to qualify for NAYC. Maren was generously sponsored by Bryan Austin and Tangled Oaks Farm to attend.

Another beautiful day at The Festival of Dressage. Funnest class I’ve judged this weekend yet was the FEI Children’s test… Sarah Geike and I had the honor of being the side judges today, while Kari McClain took the helm at C. It was so much fun and so educational. I really believe this test is going to enhance and accelerate the im26

Kat Fuqua and Dreamgirl, changing lanes from superstar champion hunter rider to dressage rider this year, finished 3rd overall. Dreamgirl is a beautiful and talented mare and will be moving up to Prix St. Georges with Kat after Championships. The pair already recently achieved their USDF Bronze medal in a few short outings together. Collecting Gaits and Gumbits are long time sponsors of USEF dressage and hunters and sponsored the Festival of Champions. Parents Jeff and Shereen Fuqua are also dressage riders from Georgia themselves.

Tessa Geven campaigned two entries for the Children's division with her second mount, Tullymor's Houdini, finishing just out of the top 12 as the alternate. Tessa brought both horses along and while usually coached by parents Marjolein and Werner aka Team Geven, she took the opportunity to school during the week with USEF coach George Williams. She and her leading mount, Big Bear's Cepheus, put in strong rides to finish 6th overall. Both horses were also qualified for the American Eventing Championships in the Novice division before it was canceled. Tessa is still of age to compete another year and are already in qualifiers for Children's and Ponies 2021! Tessa Geven has also recently achieved USDF Bronze medal scores!

Kat said on Instagram following the event: It is with great pride that I owe my dressage career to my trainer & family friend Jason Canton. He trained me for years at home and got DreamGirl especially for me when we weren’t looking. He believes in me and sacrifices his time for me. He has known me since before I was born, delivered my first rocking horse at my first Christmas and sang happy first birthday. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Ella Traylor and Rumour made their way to Lamplight with trainer Jessica Bryant Souther of Avalon Farm who previously coached another GDCTA rider to Festival of Champions in 2018, GDCTA's Youth President and previous Children's competitor, Maribeth Hebert. Ella and Rumour had much success in the qualifiers and finished with a 66% for 12th place overall in their first national championship. This new pair was in only their 5th show together!

GDCTA Dressage Seat contenders Maren Elise FouchĂŠ-Hanson and Alice Burley put in outstanding rides in the Dressage Seat Equitation Finals for 13 and under, Maren finishing in Bronze medal position and Alice finishing 6th. Alice, representing Leah Marks Dressage, was riding Joshua S, a Friesian owned by Anne Margaret Meyers. Alice also had great scores in the open show classes held simultaneously with the Festival of Champions. The pair will continue to regionals in First Level and Dressage Seat Equitation hoping to return to Lamplight again in 2021.

Even with the strict Covid protocol, limited attendance, and short qualifying period, this National Championship went on with great success and many stellar rides. GDCTA had a wonderful representation with not only many qualified but many top placings as well. The future of Georgia Dressage looks very bright!
