Outside the Sandbox delivering general articles and activities

Dear Members, Wow, March is slipping away fast! As you know, the GDCTA yearbook is just around the corner. This is the place many businesses include in their print advertising plans because people hold on to these commemorative issues of Collected Remarks. For details, check out our media planning guide on the website: www.gdcta.org/advertise. Quick reminder, we have new awards for 2021! In addition to the awards we’ve been offering, we have added two new awards for our young schooling show riders – the Letterman Jacket and Rider Award. Check out those new programs on the website: https://www.gdcta.org/program-rules. Along with those new youth awards, we’ve made it easier to qualify for the year-end awards program. Now scores earned at GDCTA-hosts shows, count twice toward the requirements! Read that again - scores earned at GDCTA-hosted shows count twice toward the year-end awards program. You could qualify for dressage in one two-show weekend. Wow, that’s easy! GDCTA-hosted shows: • April 17-18 GDCTA Spring Fling Schooling Show at Wills Park • May 15-16 Greater Atlanta Dressage Southern (GADS) I &II at the Horse Park • August 21-22 GDCTA Summer Finals Schooling Show at Wills Park • September 4-5 Labor Day Classic I & II at the Horse Park September 30 End of 2021 Show Season • October 8-10 GAIG/USDF Regional 3 Dressage Championships at the Horse Park In the meantime, we have many activities lined up. The Way I see It The first and last words on controlling flies, you will ever need to read!!

ǡ Ǥ ǡ Ǥ ǡ Ǧ ǡ accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. Set ǡ ǡ ʹͲǦ͵Ͳ Ǥ , the flies are all “down” and ǡ Ǥ ȋ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǤȌ Ǥ ǡ Ǥ Ǥ Ǥ ǡ Ǥ

ǡ Ǥ Ǧ those nasty biting or “stomping” flies on your horse’s legs. Move the traps around to where they Ǥ Ǥ

Here’s the big rub. That morning, while getting dressed to go to the barn, I heard a very clear voice say that I was going to fall off that day. No joke. Prior to this, I had been aware of little feelings or nudges from my intuition, but not enough to explore it much. I was only 22 years old and was very ego driven at the time. I shrugged off that voice. I thought for a second, that was strange, but then went about my day and thought nothing of it.

By Beth Lauren Parrish You’re in the warm-up arena and your horse’s energy is a little bit higher than you’d like. You can feel your heart beating faster and you’re doing your best to feel both seat bones in the saddle so you don’t float away.

While waking up in the recovery room, all I could think about was that voice. I was warned. I somehow knew and did nothing about it.

This is a very common scenario. Our horses will feed off the energy at a competition, as well as our own nervous energy. I’ve dealt with this all of my life. When I was eleven years old and starting to ride my trainer’s older event horse, Calcutta, I would get butterflies in my stomach with just the thought of my little jumping show coming up that month.

My entire life perspective changed after that. I don’t wait for voices any longer. I take time every morning to write in what I call my ‘inner guidance journal’ and I ask my higher self/universe/angels/whatever you want to call this super cool connection we all have… What do I need to focus on today? Every day it’s different. And it’s always so varied. Some days, it’s all about making sure I eat enough broccoli. Other days, it can be the inspiration I need on how to approach my next project.

The fluttering continued, even as a young assistant trainer in my twenties, when I would ride any youngster that the main trainer decided needed experience in the show ring. I remember coming home after the long days of a horse show, feeling good that I had managed, with my entire essence, to successfully support the nerves of the squirrely off-the-track Thoroughbred every time he passed the scary judge’s box. I felt good, yet exhausted. Managing your nerves, along with a 1,000-pound kite, with the guise of a horse’s body, takes a lot of stamina.

Having that accident was actually one of the greatest gifts a young riding instructor could have received. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I began to find my empathy button for my students. I learned about going as slow as you need when you’re afraid and, most important, never pushing too hard, too fast. You see, I was never afraid of riding. I would get those stomach flips for the competitions, but it wasn’t anything like what I had experienced when getting back in the saddle from that fall. My body was terrified of getting hurt again. I had a recurring thought of my horse bucking. I would freeze up and would have to hop off many times. I had to honor that. I had to take my time and only ride the horse I trusted completely.

It wasn’t until I had my first huge accident that I began to address how to manage my energy and how to help keep myself calm, more relaxed, and tuned into whichever horse I am honored to sit on. It was a typical, ‘hurry up and hop on this horse for a quick schooling, before all the lessons begin’ type of morning. I didn’t do any groundwork. I just saddled up, walked around a bit, started trotting and then it happened. This 17.1 hand dapple grey Thoroughbred spooked and bucked hard. I went flying through the air and ended up with a compound fracture that needed emergency surgery, which included a metal plate in my forearm.

That horse was, believe it or not, my little prince of an Arabian named Biffy. He was a Polish Arabian that I met in Northern California. He was the main lesson horse in the program where I took on all of the beginner riders. He would actually stop if you felt off balance. He took

care of all the little ones on the lunge line. It was precious to see him come to a halt, look at me, and then turn his head to the side that I couldn’t see, to indicate his student had lost her stirrup, again. He was my ‘get back in the saddle and get my confidence going again’ steady steed. It took a good four months before I was cleared to ride and then another six to feel completely comfortable again. I promised my parents, still living in New York, that I wouldn’t ride the green beans any longer. That lasted at least one year. I did, however, begin to hone in on my new-to-me tools of slowing down, listening to my intuition, and connecting with my horse. I had taken an animal communication seminar a year later and dove into the world of telepathy with two eager feet. I was able to get confirmations that still make my head spin, but that’s for another piece. Here, I will just mention that combining listening to your inner guidance and truly tuning in with your horse is the secret sauce to building confidence, mastering your energy, and slowing down the butterfly wings in your tummy during a competition. Or even when you’re daydreaming of riding in one.

EVENTING 3 times the fun

Rule Refresher: The "11 Penalty" Rule By Jessica Duffy - USEA Staff With the introduction of frangible devices for cross-country fences came the introduction of penalties associated with activating a fence's frangible device. In 2015, the FEI rule regarding frangible devices, which originally gave a rider 21 penalties for activating a frangible device, was changed to 11 penalties. Effective on December 1, 2020, the USEF adopted a similar rule for nationally recognized competitions, also giving riders 11 penalties for activating a frangible device. Below you will find the rules regarding penalties for activating a frangible device for both the USEF Rules for Eventing, which pertain to national competition for the Modified through Advanced levels, and FEI Eventing Rules, which pertain to all international competition for the CCI* through CCI5*-L levels. Text has been taken directly from the USEF Rules for Eventing and FEI Eventing Rules with emphasis added by the USEA.

Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association Regular Meeting

Committee Reports: Communications: Joanne Morse, - Joanne Morse,

emailed all stats on newsletter and magazine. Jan/Feb newsletter came out last week so working on March.

February 15, 2021

Horse Show Committee: Chairperson: Julie Shannon, Committee members include Joanne Morse, Abigail Kroupa, Peter West. Working on

President Caren Caverly called the regular meeting of the GDCTA to order on January 18, 2021 at 7:05 pm on Zoom.

Policy and Procedures, getting close to done. Then will email to the Board for their input once it is complete. Motion to accept Schooling Show budget by Caren, Seconded by Joanne, approved. (Caren abstained) Wills Park has two dates, working on a third dates. Caren has been voted on to the equine advisory board for Wills Park.

A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Joanne Morse, Ashley Boyd, Carol Tresan, Peter West, Liz Malloy, Janie Pride, Julie Shannon, Danielle Perry were present. The minutes of the regular meeting for January 18, 2021, were emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Liz Molloy made a motion to approve the minutes. Joanne Morse seconded. Motion passed.

Jan partially due to auction.

Fox Village Dressage Horse Show Management Software now does paperless scribing, where they do not have to get a paper test back. Proposal of using it at our shows, however, could not be used at Wills Park. Conyers does have the means to do it. May show Fox Village charges $150 but will not have to have runners or golf carts for runners. You also do not have to pay a scorer. Caren made motion to use this function at the May and Sept shows to see how it works. Seconded by Ashley Boyd. Will need to get minimal equipment for these two shows. The rider needs to be aware to check and make sure that their score is recorded correctly and that it is not a 0. A scorer would still need double check the scores prior to pinning the class. Approved by the board. (Caren abstained)

VP of Dressage: Abigal Kroupa, still working on

Finance Committee: Peter West, reached back out to

Caren Cavalry made a motion to turn video on during board meetings and Joanne Morse seconded it. Discussion saying that some people cannot turn on video due to zoom limitations. Addendum made by Caren to keep video on at all times unless having technical difficulty. Motion passed.

VP of Combined Training: Joanne Morse, working

with Marian Bickers to do a jumper round clinic which is similar to a ride-a-test in dressage. Kristen Smolze will come and give feedback on the round. Working on getting numbers from Kristen. Good for younger riders to get feedback without a huge expense. Marian is willing to donate facilities for the first one. Working on a clinic with Kim Severson. Working on where Kim can stay, can use the Chatt Hills cabin, if it is not booked. On the survey, members wanted to see big names come down for clinics.

Youth Chairperson: Joanne Morse, no meeting this

month. There was an error with the zoom link. Been working on schooling show letterman jacket program. Local embroidery girl not doing work so had sample made, cost a little more than planned. Working on getting jackets at cost. Probably won’t be at the budget price. Wanting to make the program pay for itself. Presented coat with embroidery. Looking into getting the coats done via GDCTA nonprofit pricing.

Regionals: Caren, in the past we have had 5 rings that belonged to the GDCTA. At Regionals anywhere from 610 rings are used so we will have to rent. Caren made a motion that we buy 2 additional rings to make total of 7 rings, which would be the average of what we need. Carol Seconded the motion. Discussion on arenas followed. Joanne in favor of buying versus renting because renting is just throwing away money. Board Approved. When talking to people ask them about volunteering at Regionals.
