“Honey Bees’ Life“ POSTER AND GAME APP

Fall 2015 / Spring 2016 Instructor: Adrienne Nicole The illustrations and the poster were made in Fall 2015 during the internship in University Housing at UIUC. They were made for a theme meal at school dining halls. I first got the literal information about honeybees’ lifecycle from Adrienne Nicole, who was one of my instructors and also a project finalizer. Based on the text, I did some online research and found some relevant photos. Then, I made the illustrations, designed the poster template, dragged text and images in, and turned it in to Adrienne. In Spring 2016, by myself, I extended the illustrations into a education game APP. It was designed for young children to learn honeybees’ lifecycle.

“Halloween Dinner“ EVENT POSTER AND FOOD CARDS

Fall 2015 Instructor: Laura Cynkar I made this Halloween series when I was an graphic design intern in University Housing at UIUC. The poster and food cards were designed for the theme dinner at all dining halls in 2015 Halloween. I had designed several options, but this ghost housewife was my favorite because this was my first time to do photo manipulation when I was making the figure. After I finished the poster, I made food cards with corresponding visual style as the poster.

“Mini Cake Kit“ PACKAGING DESIGN Fall 2015 Instructor: Brad Tober The project was finished in Advanced Graphic Design class. It was a packaging design for the Japanese “Popin Cookin” Mini Cake Kit (Reference: https://www.howtocookthat.net/ public_html/diy-popin-cookin-mini-kit/). The kit included a lot of ingredients and tools with a Japanese instructions. Before I started designing, I had the cooking experience with my classmates in class to understand the process. I found it very fussy, because mixing powders looked similar and there were so many steps to follow. Therefore, I organized the ingredients and tools into separate drawers, so users could grab right things when they follow the instruction. In addition, the spiral box saves space, so that users can have more clean cooking area. After users finish making the cake, they are welcome to reuse the box. Since the cake kit product was from Japan, to correspond Japanese culture, I made colors scheme and graphic style very “kawaii” (“cute” in Japanese). And, the rope made the “handbag” box portable, and it looked like a Japanese souvenir (Japanese: 土産).

“Urbaign Living“ VI DESIGN AND WELCOME PACKAGE Spring 2015 Instructor: Eric Benson This branding project was a half-group-and-half-individual work done in Intermediate Graphic Design class. The company identity and logo were designed as a group with Katie Anderson and Elyce Heffez. For individual extensions, Elyce designed a website, Katie designed an APP, and I made a physical “gift bag.” “Urbaign Living” is supposed to be a housing and renting company in Urbana-Champaign, IL. Its goal was to create a trustful, friendly, and effective atmosphere for people who look for housing. I had this welcome package to show the company’s hospitality and warmth. Residents get the pack when they go to office for keys. The package included a keychain with member number (residents would need it for the website and APP), two candy boxes, a living guide, and a refrigerator magnet that has all the important contact information of facilities. When residents arrive at their living places, there was a welcome door hanger that thanks them for choosing the company and wishes them live well. “Nine Dishes Feast“ ICON SET AND DESK CALENDAR

Fall 2015 / Spring 2016 Instructor: Brad Tober This nine-icon series was made in Advanced Graphic Design class, and it took through the whole semester (Fall 2015). I started it with a concept and tried to form a system to design all the icons consistently. I designed one icon every week, and kept revising the method until the illustrations met my desired result. (More process details are on the poster.) In the second semester (Spring 2016), I applied the icons for practical uses. I made a foldable desk calendar that can be reproduced. I had made several ones as gifts to my friends, and they liked it.

“Major Race“ BOARD GAME DESIGN

Fall 2014 Instructor: Márit McCluske This board game design was a group project completed with Arjun Reddy, Matthew Pahl, and Abby Treece in Vertical Studio (a Graphic Design class that included sophomores, juniors, and seniors). This team experience was the best ever that every person was highly cooperated and efficient. We combined the concepts of “Life” and “Monopoly,” and added our school’s features into the game. For example, there are local restaurants, bars, and stores appear on the event cards. One special thing about this project was we made the game boards by ourselves, which drove us a little bit crazy. And we were required to make four sets for all of us. It required a lot of patience to print, trim, and organize. Although it included a lot of craftsmanship work, we were pretty satisfied about the finished product.

“PreT Travel Journal“ BOOK MAKING AND PACKAGING DESIGN Fall 2015 Instructor: Brad Tober The “PreT Travel Journal” was a class project in Advanced Graphic Design class. The project was to create a tool that helps an English-speaker to have a 4-day-long trip in a country that does not speak English without any electronic devices. Since I was taking a book making class at the same time, my idea was to make a journal that users can use to make daily plans before the trip starts. Users can write down weather, names, addresses, and open hours of the places that they will visit. I used dry-erase paper for reusing. Also, users can keep their maps, tickets, and IDs’ safely on the slots. Moreover, users can arrange the daily sections freely because the journal was bind with rubber bands. I also made a detailed instruction to avoid confusion. Considering that people at different ages have different aesthetics, I designed two versions with different graphic styles, fonts, and cover materials. Last but not least, except the box (I bought the plain box from crafts store, and pasted vinyl stickers on the cover), everything was hand-made. Things I learned in book making class helped me a lot to complete this project.

“A Big Talk about the Future“ MOTION GRAPHICS VIDEO

Fall 2015 This project was for the application of Ogilvy’s internship in Shanghai, China. The topic was to freely predict life in the future and describe it by a video or audio. This was my second time to use After Effects to make a motion graphics video, I was not that familiar with it. So I closed my door, blocked all of my friends, and spent six days on watching online tutorials, illustrating, designing motions, editing videos, and dubbing. Finally, I got the interview. Unfortunately, since the internship would start before I graduate, I had to say bye to this opportunity. However, it was a memorable experience and my motion graphics skill increased dramatically.
