down on doors to bring luck into the new year. At weddings, the character Xi is cut into paper and used to wish the new couple double happiness. The Taoist religion has five sacred mountains. Mount Huashan has been of these sacred mountains since 2 B.C. The southern peak is the highest, and it reaches 2,160 meters — that’s 7,087 feet. Most of the mountain is made of granite. The trail on Mt. Huashan was first created by Taoist nuns and monks. They carved the thin, dangerous path to make religious trips to the top of the mountain. The trails on the mountain are incredibly high, thin and steep.

In many areas, hikers have to wear harnesses that attach to chains that are bolted to the mountain. Without safety equipment, If they slip, they could fall hundreds of feet. The most dangerous part of the hike is called the plank walk. During the plank walk, hikers walk on wooden planks secured to the mountain. The planks are thin, the mountain is steep and the drop is thousands of feet to the ground.
Monday, May 27, is Memorial Day. For many of us that means backyard cookouts and a day off from work or school. It has a much deeper meaning though. Memorial Day used to be known as Decoration Day. It started after the Civil War when people would decorate the graves of the Union and Confederate soldiers. ridges and tunnels are two ways people overcome geographical challenges. Being able to go over, under or through something is a lot easier and faster than having to go around it. Imagine having to go around an entire mountain or valley! People aren’t the only creatures to take advantage of bridges and tunnels. Animals and insects use them, too. While the first bridges were likely trees that fell across ravines, it didn’t take long for people to figure out different ways to make and use bridges, including using wood and rope to suspend bridges high in the air. The ancient Romans used stones to make bridges. Today, we use not only wood and stone, but metal and cables, too. A tunnel is an underground passage that goes through the earth. Some historians think prehistoric people trying to make their caves bigger dug the first tunnels. Ancient civilizations used tunnels, too, for things like irrigation, water drainage and mining. As early as 2180 B.C., tunnels were used in Babylonia to connect the royal palace to the temple. Today we use tunnels for transportation as well. For example, the Channel Tunnel, which is sometimes called The Chunnel, is more than 30 miles long and connects France and England.

It is 1,126 feet tall, which is taller than the Eiffel Tower. The bridge was built to reduce automobile traffic from France to Spain. April’s skies found Mars traveling between star clusters after sunset and a great gathering of planets just before sunrise. Mars showed stargazers exactly what the term “planet� originally meant, with its rapid movement across the evening sky last month. The ancient Greeks used the term planete, meaning wanderer, to label the bright star-like objects that traveled between the constellations of the zodiac year after year. Mars wandered through the sky throughout April, visible in the west for several hours after sunset. Mars traveled past two of the most famous star clusters in our night sky: the Pleiades and Hyades. The red planet was next to the tiny but bright Pleiades on April 1. By the second week in April, it had moved eastward in Taurus toward the larger V-shaped Hyades. Red Mars appeared to the right of the slightly brighter red-orange star Aldebaran on April 11. We saw only the brightest stars in these clusters with our unaided eyes; how many additional stars do you think you could observe through binoculars? Open clusters are made up of young stars born from the same “star nursery� of gas and dust. These two open clusters are roughly similar in size. The Pleiades appeared much smaller as they are 444 light years
away, roughly three times the distance of the Hyades, at 151 light years distant. Aldebaran is in the same line of sight as the Hyades, but it is not a member of the cluster; it shines just 65 light years away. By comparison, Mars is practically next door to us in April, just a mere 18 light minutes from Earth — that’s almost 200 million miles. Think of the difference between how long it takes the light to travel from these bodies: 18 minutes versus 65 years.

You may have a good idea and be able write it down, but you still need someone else to think it is good enough to print. Once they do that, there is more waiting — for them to fix any problems or draw the pictures and

Tornadoes are an infamous severe weather hazard, with an average of nearly 1,200 tornadoes occurring in the U.S. each year. The majority of these tornadoes are weak and last only a few minutes, causing minimal damage. However, on occasion, a few strong to violent tornadoes occur each year and produce winds in excess of 150 miles per hour along with widespread damage.
A Tornado Watch is issued (over a large area) roughly four to eight hours in advance of potentially severe thunderstorm development. This means that the atmosphere is favorable for thunderstorms to produce tornadoes over the next several hours. However, tornadoes that develop in squall lines or complexes can be just as damaging and deadly. Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

The dragon dance is used to scare away evil spirits and bad luck. Today, people will hire teams of Chinese dragon dancers to bring good luck to their celebrations and to events like opening new businesses. ‍ Ú˜Ů‰â€ŹIt takes a team of skilled dancers to perform a traditional dragon dance. ‍ Ú˜Ů‰â€ŹThe dragon’s body is made of fabric and bamboo. The dragon dance tradition started in the Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty was from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. The Han people were farmers, and they believed that dragons were wise, benevolent and able to control the rain. Villages used the dance to honor dragons, to ask for rain and to celebrate a good harvest. Chinese emperors also believed that they were direct descendants from dragons. The dance became a popular part of celebrations like the Chinese New Year in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.) and the Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.).

an elderly woman named Flora, who claims her house is haunted. Nancy decides to investigate with the help of her friends, George and Bess, and Flora’s “mean girl� niece, Helen. My biggest issue with this movie is the mystery. I understand that this movie is aimed at younger kids, yet I feel the mystery is too easy to solve. However, that is my only major problem with this film. Plus, I didn’t mind this that much, since even though the mystery is obvious, I enjoyed the characters. One thing I really like about this film is the typical mean girl character, Helen. At first it seems like Helen is just a stereotypical popular girl. Instead, she’s only mean for a little bit of the movie. Halfway in, she goes through
a character arc. It is nice to see this character done differently. However, my favorite character is, hands down, Flora. She is a very funny and so memorable. Everyone needs to have an Aunt Flora in their life. Flora had some of the best lines in the movie. I really like the cast of this film. Sophia Lillis as Nancy Drew is fantastic. She is very engaging, and I hope to see more of her in the future. Linda Lavin as Flora is amazing. She brings so much charisma and humor to every scene she is in. Zoe Renee as George and Mackenzie Graham as Bess are also pretty good supporting characters. I wish they were in the movie more. I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 7 to 18. The baby sea horses then float out of the brood pouch and use their tails to stick together to stay safe from predators. Sea horses are the only animal on earth where the male gives birth.
