There are galleries, plays, websites and film suggestions in this booklet to name just a few things, so we hope you'll find this a helpful and interesting tool. We will also be running a competition with prizes to be won in September! Produce a response to something you were inspired by this booklet to do over summer. It could be a poem, a poster, a model, a painting- the more creative the better! Please hand your entries in to Ms Forshaw by Monday 9th September - good luck and have a fantastic summer! GERMAN Read: Grimm's Fairy Tales. With the words “Once upon a time,” the Brothers Grimm transport readers to a timeless realm where witches, giants, princesses, kings, fairies, goblins, and wizards fall in love, try to get rich, quarrel with their neighbors, and have magical adventures of all kinds—and in the process reveal essential truths about human nature. When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm set out to collect stories in the early 1800s, their goal was not to entertain children but to preserve Germanic folklore—and the hard life of European peasants was reflected in the tales they discovered. However, once the brothers saw how the stories entranced young readers, they began softening some of the harsher aspects to make them more suitable for children. A cornerstone of Western culture since the early 1800s, Grimm’s Fairy Tales is now beloved the world over.

See: Emil and the Detectives at the National Theatre. Join young Emil as he says goodbye to his mother, leaves his small town and sets off on a journey that will change his life. But as he starts tracking down the thief, he soon discovers that he’s not alone in the big city after all. For this classic tale of a boy learning to rely on himself – and on his new friends – the Olivier stage transforms into 1920s Berlin: a place full of surprises and danger, where everything moves at the speed of your imagination.
