The Newsletter from Wimbledon High School Harvest - a whole school affair
Junior Concert In a KS2 Informal concert nearly 30 performers - from girls who have been playing for only a few months, to more experienced musicians - entertained the supportive crowd of parents, grandparents, siblings and nannies! All girls prepared well and performed confidently. Congratulations!
Othello A group of Year 9s performed Othello at Hammersmith Riverside Studios on Tuesday 4th October and in the Rutherford Centre on Wednesday 5th October as part of the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival. The organiser of the festival, Dominic Fitch, praised the team’s professional approach to the piece and in particular the girls’ ability to present such strong male characters in mature and moving performances. The play was a triumph and a testament to the hard work and commitment of the students.
Talking Languages
Impact of 2012 Olympics on Box Hill
Year 9 experienced some of the recent glorious weather when they went on a Geography field trip to Box Hill. The aim of the day was to explore issues surrounding the potential impact of the 2012 London Olympics cycling event on the valuable chalk grassland environment. Additionally, the girls were assessing the existing management strategies practised by the National Trust and evaluating whether they could cope with the expected increase in visitors next year.
To celebrate the diversity of languages, the Modern Foreign Languages Department invited a former student, Rachel Chapman, to take assemblies and share with us her love of Chinese language and culture. Rachel explained what made her choose this particular language and how she overcame initial difficulties. She spoke very enthusiastically about her year studying in China from which she returned this summer. She summed up how she loves the country and its people and the huge benefits studying another language and living abroad can bring. Rachel kept her audience captivated with her fascinating account, her excellent presentation skills and her personal photos. It was an inspiring talk and we wish Rachel a lot of fun and success as she starts her fourth year at the Centre of Chinese Studies at SOAS, University of London.
