LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER | SWEET DREAMS

I have a recurring dream. I am hosting a nationally televised ceremony handing out our 2022 Package Design Awards to couture-wearing winners. I make an innocuous joke — perhaps about the advantages of lithography over flexography or paperboard over plastic — and someone in the audience storms up and slaps me in the face. I suspect it is a thin-skinned lithographer but I can’t be sure as it all fades to black. That I experience this particular dream repeatedly tells me two things. First, I am getting old as my nighttime reveries rarely used to involve print processes, unless there is some symbolism here that I am missing. Second, and more to the point, I believe deeply that our 2022 winners deserve the big spotlight for the exceptional artists, strategists and innovators that they are. Indeed, they have earned our respect. Our 59th anniversary package awards program is among the largest — and is certainly GORDON KAYE IS THE PUBLISHER OF GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to gkaye @ gdusa.com.

the most selective — we have organized. The outstanding work showcased here — 325+ pieces — celebrates beauty and style, of course, but even more important, the power of effective and inspired design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth. This is all the more significant as it comes against the backdrop of an anticipated boom in the packaging industry — some experts estimate compound annual growth of up to 9% per year through the end of the decade — a forecast that far exceeds most other forms of communication. Growth is good news. Even better news is that, to a considerable extent, this is a graphic design story. Makers, marketers and sellers are challenged as never before to make a connection and sell their products. Think distraction, fragmentation, information overload, media clutter, global competition, economic dislocation, and retail disruption. Designers are uniquely equipped to create aesthetic and strategic packaging solutions that can be — and increasingly are — the difference makers in communicating the message, differentiating the product, advancing the brand, making the sale. Effective design is at the heart of the solution. Moreover, designers are also prepared to benefit from — and even shape — several related trends generating additional tailwinds for the industry: the growing interest in customization and personalization; the increased emphasis on sustainability and sustainable materials; the demand for transparency in packaging and labeling; the challenge of creating impact online as well as on-shelf; the rise of private label branding; and the integration of advanced technologies that enhance information, assure authenticity and promote efficiency. All in your wheelhouse. I hope you enjoy our showcase today. And dream peacefully tonight of sweet package design opportunities.

FRESH | ELMWOOD TACKLES TABOO

WARREN NJ Hemorrhoid treatment brand Preparation H has

unveiled a new brand expression developed by global design consultancy Elmwood. The initiative uses humor to challenge the stigma and embarrassment associated with “butt health.” From the start, the tension facing Preparation H was clear. Most people will experience hemorrhoids at some point, but there’s shame attached to talking about it openly. Elmwood saw an opportunity to tackle the taboo head-on by leveraging humor to create a more relatable brand expression. A series of amusing and shareable illustrations, animations, and images form the basis for the client’s brand communications. And copy is packed with colloquialisms rather than cold medical language and uses captions such as “Your butt is behind you no matter what.” The sense of playfulness is also encapsulated with a quirky, retro typeface. The new look and feel was introduced on social media channels and a microsite built by ad agency Grey Group. Says Elmwood Creative Director Krista Oraa: “Preparation H has a unique place in the market. We knew there was an opportunity to enhance this by creating a brand expression that is built on humor to challenge the stigma associated with this area of health.” www.elmwood.com

FRESH | ZOETIS CAMPAIGN RIDES ON EMOTION

MINNEAPOLIS MN. Zoetis, a leading animal health company,

wants to remind horse owners and veterinarians that the company understands the deep love that humans feel toward horses. Colle McVoy and 10 Thousand Design made this emotional connection the focal point of a creative campaign platform and brand evolution that shifts the client’s marketing strategy away from the rational, scientific and product-led approach common in the industry. The centerpiece of the campaign — “Long Live the Horse” — is a video showing the bond and mutual respect between various caretakers and their horses and leaves the viewer wondering “Who’s caring for who?” Additional graphic elements include a comprehensive brand design system, a refreshed veterinarianfacing website, a new horse owner website, a national media campaign, retail collateral, and social media, tradeshow and environmental graphics. The production company is Rakish, the music company is SOUTH, and photography is by Andy Anderson. www.collemcvoy.com

FRESH | POSTERS CELEBRATE OSCARS AND POP ART

NEW YORK NY/HOLLYWOOD CA

As is an annual tradition, Shutter-

stock’s creative team has released 10 bespoke pop art movie posters to honor the Best Picture nominees in the 94th slapcademy awards. Turning to world famous pop artists for artistic inspiration, the Oscar Pop! series sees the designers draw upon the platform’s collection of photos, vectors, patterns, and textures to capture the spirit of the nominated features, while showcasing the possibilities of these creative assets. Says Creative Director Flo Lau: “The Oscars are an iconic moment in the content creation world, and as a result, they have become an equally important moment in our content calendar at Shutterstock. Not only is our Editorial team heavily involved in capturing the most memorable red-carpet moments and sharing them with the world, but our design team uses the occasion to demonstrate creative flair and innovation through our annual Oscar Pop! series.” This year’s nominated films and artists who influenced the designers include: “Belfast” inspired by Takashi Murakami (Nicole Dai), “CODA” by Christine Sun Kim (Will Banchero), “Don’t Look Up” by Beeple (HARTMAN), Drive My Car” by Andy Warhol (Thanh Nguyen), “Dune” by Moebius (Ron Domingue), “King Richard” by Rosalyn Drexler (Abi Gaudreau), “Licorice Pizza” by Richard Hamilton (Veronica Elaine), “Nightmare Alley” by Jean-Michel Basquiat (Hannah Golding), “The Power of the Dog” by Roy Lichtenstein (Natalie Wilson), and “West Side Story” by Karoly Grosz (Jac Castillo). www.shutterstock.com/blog/2022-oscar-pop-movie-posters

FRESH | OGILVY ORCHESTRATES THE RARE SQUARE IDENTITY

NEW YORK NY To create a renewed relationship between the city and its Orchestra, Ogilvy is helping kick off a new

chapter in the New York Philharmonic’s history with a new visual identity. The identity launches as the NY Phil prepares to return to the newly reimagined David Geffen Hall this Fall for its 2022/23 season. The new home will allow people to see, hear, and experience the Philharmonic from every possible angle by inviting the audience to surround the orchestra. A new logo reflects this while aiming to keep New York at its heart: the NY Phil is located within Lincoln Center, the iconic three block campus square that, in turn, sits within the broader grid that is New York City. Marcos Kotlhar, Chief Creative Officer at Ogilvy New York says: “New York surrounds the Philharmonic, just like the audience surrounds the orchestra. We embraced these realities and made them the heart of the new visual identity. The logo highlights the rare square that the NY Phil calls home and reflects the experience audiences will have in the new hall. We also used the new logo throughout the system to place their renowned musicians and concerts at the center of the brand.” Ogilvy has a long history with the Philharmonic. As a member of the New York creative community, legendary ad man and agency founder David Ogilvy dedicated his talents to supporting the arts, including serving on the Philharmonic’s Board of Directors during the 1950s and 60s. www.ogilvy.com

FRESH | RADICAL SIMPLIFICATION FOR ECONOMIST GROUP

LONDON UK Wolff Olins has created a rebrand for the Economist

Group that seeks to build on the editorial integrity of The Economist magazine while differentiating the organization’s non-journalistic offerings. Beyond journalism, The Economist Group spans executive education, data, research and forecasting, events, custom content and more. Despite operating separately from the journalism, the client feared that rapid growth of these ancillary services could dilute The Economist’s reputation for editorial independence. Thus the challenge: bring clarity to the Group’s offerings, retain the link to the flagship magazine, and protect the independence of the iconic journalism brand. The solution: simplify the portfolio down from dozens of products to four core brands: Economist Impact, Economist Intelligence, Economist Education and, of course, The Economist. States Wolff Olins: “We identified the editorial approach of The Economist as the heart of their brand equity across the Group. So we needed to create brand architecture that allowed other parts of The Economist Group to communicate the same excellence and to apply it to their respective industries and audiences. This was an exercise in radical simplification, bringing the Group’s portfolio of over fifty brands down to just four . . . united under a shared mission and brand narrative, all tied together nicely with the recognizable ‘red thread’ design theme. And by defining a Group-wide set of experience principles, we equipped each new brand to translate The Economist’s editorial approach into its own language.” www.wolffolins.com

FRESH | FOODBANK BRANDING REFLECTS FRESH MISSION

MADISON WI Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin

has a new logo, branding and tagline thanks to Planet Propaganda. In a segment that has seen minimal evolution in operations and identities, the design agency developed a look that underscores the client’s commitment to fresh, nutritious foods as well as to making ambitious investments in the infrastructure needed to distribute it. The logo is inspired by a visual language around the story of nutrition, growth, and approachability — made up of a bold custom type that uses the “O” to represent a sun and the “V” to represent foliage – then stacked upon each other to form the visual of a flower. A vibrant color palette helps bring the illustrations to life across signage, delivery trucks, apparel, takeaway bags, and printed materials. The identity and “Nourish First” tagline combine, says the agency, “to convey the importance of access to truly nutritious food, to communicate stature and leadership, feel approachable to the community, and convey optimism.” planetpropaganda.com

FRESH | MUSEUM IDENTITY EXHIBITS FLUIDITY AND FLEXIBILITY

SAN DIEGO CA The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD)

has introduced a branding campaign by Happening Studio of Tokyo and Los Angeles CA. The launch coincides with the reopening of its La Jolla flagship location this spring, which has undergone a $105 million renovation and expansion by Selldorf Architects, and is the first time the Museum’s logo has been redesigned in 15 years. Happening Studio partners Karen and Masato Nakada explain: “We proposed an identity system that can morph and adapt to its given space, medium, and environment. Instead of thinking about one color and one typeface to own as an institution, we proposed colorways as sets and superfamily fonts (serif, sans, extended, condensed), allowing the museum to have a diverse range of ‘voices’ for various events and exhibitions but still be cohesive and institutional. The new system utilizes fluidity and flexibility. The identity can shift its brand voice from brand-forward to content-forward. It can be a quiet, invisible container showcasing exhibition content or it can have a louder institutional brand voice to address public messages, important updates, and awareness with consistency.” One key feature of the logo is the ability to occupy and activate its entire space; the letters M, C, A can increase or decrease their letter spacing and the identity is responsive and customizable to unique scales and applications for both print, digital and 3D spaces. The fluidity of the “in-between” spaces is an homage to the Selldorf expansion, drawing a relationship between architectural space and people. thehappening.us

FRESH | BASKIN-ROBBINS URGES ‘SEIZE THE YAY’

DAYTON OH/LOS ANGELES CA Baskin-Robbins highlights the happiness ice cream can bring with a refresh of its logo,

packaging, employee uniforms and tagline encouraging customers to “Seize the Yay” — that is, appreciate every moment, no matter how big or small. The new visual identity system and logo were designed by experience agency ChangeUp, based in Dayton and Los Angeles. Leaning into the client’s past use of circus-like imagery, the identity system is meant to be fun and bold and retains the familiar “31” (a flavor each day of the month) built right into the monogram itself. Every touchpoint received a makeover with a new color palette for cohesion and a playful brand expression. The platform, strategy, and supporting 360 campaign work was developed by longtime creative partner 22squared of Atlanta and Tampa. The initiative includes limited edition merch and the addition of three new flavors. Says Jerid Grandinetti, Vice President of Marketing and Culinary at Baskin-Robbins: “Small moments that spark joy often get taken for granted. PARSONS’ CORE CREATIVE AGENCY: INNOVATORS ACROSS THE AGES

In-House Agency Celebrates 50th Anniversary Close your eyes for a minute; imagine doing your job 50 years ago. Things were a lot different; there were no cell phones, no laptops, no keyboard shortcuts. A lot more hands-on, too, with a pica ruler, pencil, and your trusty X-Acto never far from reach. To merely survive in our fickle industry is impressive; but to thrive in it for 50 years you must be doing something right. And that’s just what Parsons’ Core Creative team has done. Monumentally, 2022 marks the 30-member in-house agency’s 50th anniversary. Join us as we reflect on their first half-century and the many ways they are sprinting headfirst into the future.

So, what exactly keeps an in-house team at the forefront through so many changes, both within their company and the industry overall? The Chicago-based agency’s Creative Director, Kathy Sara, says, “one of our keys to success is pretty simple: it’s what we call our Diversity of Thought Model. While we have a team full of career creatives who went to art schools and academies, we also seek out creatives with an array of backgrounds. We have a former economist, county courthouse intern, classically trained musicians, car detailers, licensed European architect, college educators — the list of our team’s past professions and passions goes on. This broad range of experiences and points of view unquestionably drives more creative solutions.” And Kathy herself is no exception, having a history of professional floral design and statuary restoration. Diversity of Thought continues to enable Core Creative to meet new challenges from different perspectives. Their varied backgrounds weave together, overlapping in unexpected ways and becoming a strong foundation for innovative thinking.

With Parsons being a global tech firm, it may be surprising to hear that Core Creative has held on to their old-school roots. They continue to physically construct scale models and produce handcrafted print solutions in-house. From analog to digital, they continue to build on their interests to push the boundaries of their capabilities. Over these past five decades, this quest for growth has expanded their key disciplines into graphic design, 3D visualization, video/photography, creative writing/copywriting, illustration, interactive, and creative/print production. Not only are they evolving, but with last year’s GDUSA competition results in hand — more on that in a minute — it’s safe to say they’re excelling in every service they provide. One of their all-time favorite examples of innovation in action is a 2019 tradeshow booth for CoMotion LA. The Core Creative team imagined, designed, and produced an 80s arcade-themed experience. This is a literal case study in collaboration, setting the stage for the next phase of their team’s evolution.

The branding package included a responsive logo design, color palettes, brand guidelines, and a host of templates. These items together needed to help convey the program’s mission of increased reliability and safety along a busy roadway. The FlexRoad branding has been used to develop print and digital marketing materials, a website, and videos that help establish public outreach, while building trust within the community. At GDUSA, we believe that in-house design teams are uniquely positioned to express and protect the essence of the brand, product, and mission. It is important for executive leadership to recognize and appreciate this invaluable perspective. Core Creative is a great example of this philosophy in practice. They This project was their first to leverage all seven of the team’s disciplines in a single deliverable. Creatives of all stripes came together with a common goal of highlighting two of Parsons’ smart city technologies in an engaging and memorable way. This included two games developed fully from scratch in Unity — one a touchscreen-enabled evade-the-hacker game, the other a full-scale arcade driving game, complete with working steering wheel and pedals. Their Creative Production team engineered and fabricated the cabinet from the ground up. It had to be strong enough to hold the electronics and durable enough to handle multiple cross-country trips. That sturdiness needed to be balanced with the ability to ship using conventional overnight carriers, which limited size and weight. The clever solution was a one-of-a-kind cabinet with components engineered into modular sections that were just under FedEx’s maximum package size. In fact, the largest piece had only 2 total inches to spare.

work closely with clients and stakeholders at all levels to marry art and copy into compelling stories. They are developing awardwinning Parsons-branded content, as well as stand-out creative solutions for external clients. They’ve developed branding for products, joint ventures, public agencies, and commercial clients — they deeply understand the heart of the brands they are building, as well as the brand they champion every day. This thorough understanding allows Core Creative to seamlessly collaborate with their peers at Parsons, producing engaging and persuasive branded proposals that help Parsons win more work. And that’s not all Core Creative is winning. So, about those GDUSA Awards. In 2021 we recognized Core Creative as being in the top three nationally for our GDUSA American Inhouse Design Awards. They followed that up with a Top-Five finish in the GDUSA American Graphic Design Awards; going head-to-head with full-service agencies. And this is no

The rising demand for scalable, individualized problem solving is how Core Creative’s flagship process — Creative Labs — was born. This facilitated ideation methodology provides a safe space for generating both fantastical and fantastic ideas. It not only solves problems, it produces some of Core Creative’s best concepts — concepts like the recent branding of FlexRoad, a state highway traffic management project.

fluke, as they continue to submit high quality work year after year.

The FlexRoad brand was developed from square one for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The goal was to craft a responsive identity system consisting of a program and project naming structure, a versatile tagline, and a visual branding package.

What do the next 50 years hold? The naming process spanned three progressive Creative Labs, each giving Core Creative a better understanding of the INDOT team’s expectations, the needs of the program, and helped to navigate copyright/ IP considerations. These early sessions paid dividends when the focus moved to developing a tagline. Ideas came easily and naturally from the progress of the previous creative conversations. Ultimately the team decided on the pairing of FlexRoad: Less Stop, More Go.

Holographic storage, telepathic communication, that Mars colony we’re always talking about? We’ll see. But if history repeats itself, as it tends to do, chances are high that Core Creative will continue to be among those leading the charge.

HIGHEST HONORS TOP GRAPHIC DESIGN SCHOOLS

In the January/February 2022 print magazine, which kicked off our 59th year of publishing, GDUSA released our annual Students To Watch roundup. Now we’ve compiled a list of 50 of our favorite institutions that prepare students to work in professional graphic design, based on a mix of objective and subjective factors, including our own decades long relationships with designers, students, recruiters, educators. The list is alphabetical. The reach is national. The theme is practical. Education is more important than ever as the lines between the studio and the classroom, the office and the academy, the university and society, especially in 2022, are more synergistic than ever.

We achieve this by offering more studio courses than any institution in the world. Our Advertising program is a soup-to-nuts proposition: we ground students in

In addition, students receive a focused introduction to the ethical and philosophical grounding of each of the design professions. School of Design faculty are active professionals dedicated to ensuring that students reach their potential and provide one-onone instruction in studio classes. At the University of Cincinnati, communication design students receive a foundation in visual problem solving. The core of the curriculum is a series of sequential design studios. These courses help students develop critical and visual thinking along with essential design processes. Students also have opportunities to further develop in the specific areas of graphic design, interaction design and motion design. Students reinforce their skills in the field through several co-ops. AMERICAN PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS PACKAGING, POP + RETAIL GRAPHICS SPONSORED BY NEENAH The 2022 showcase stands among our largest ever. More than 325 winning projects and campaigns from talented design firms, agencies, inhouse departments and institutions, scaled from nearly ten times the entries. Why is package design so vital? Makers, marketers and sellers are challenged as never before to convey the message, tell the story, advance the brand, make the sale. We celebrate beauty, of course, but more importantly, the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth. All against the backdrop of a packaging industry whose growth is expected to accelerate through the decade.

NEENAH: CREATE MEMORABLE MOMENTS A MESSAGE FROM THE SPONSOR

Brand decision makers and designers alike are all working towards a common goal — create memorable moments to drive brand loyalty. Brand loyalty is not a new concept, but the ways in which brands

build loyalty with their customers has changed. Today, consumers are exposed to an average of six digital touchpoints, all before making the decision to “add to cart”. With an increased focus on mobile-first shopping, how can brands build the same level of loyalty with their consumers both in-store and online?

Incorporating clever point of sale signage is another area to reinforce brand messaging and style. Instead of traditional signage, why not wow guests with your wall coverings by using a vivid mural, backlit display, or eye-catching wallcovering for maximum impact? Whether it’s the brick-and-mortar locations or the perfectly packaged parcels on their doorstep, customers crave an exceptional experience throughout their consumer journey. To keep them coming back, and have them raving about your brand to others, use every available option to wow and win them over. SMALL DETAILS, BIG REWARDS In a competitive retail environment, no detail can be overlooked. Everything from window signage to gift card holders should be considered. Little extras in the shopping bag go a long way toward nurturing your relationship with your customers. 61% of consumers think surprise gifts and offers are the most important way a brand can interact with them. Luxury brands differentiate by refining the checkout experience through surprise ingredients .1 Follow their example and slip in a personal thank you note and wrap packages with custom papers and labels. Brand recognition, experience, and trust are the key drivers in associated search. Let’s Explore with Free Search The third consumer search pattern is free search; a ‘let's explore’ frame of mind. This search is filled with the sense of the unknown, discovery, excitement, and curiosity. As in our story of the oyster bed, you have discovered something new and wonderful. In today's world, free search might be like taking a chance and splurging on a new and unfamiliar wine for a special occasion. Building brands that are found by free search capitalize on the consumer's desire for new, novel, inventive, or innovative brands.
