Urban agricultural complex based on the renovation of oldresidential buildings in sham shui po

Project type: Group work, Academic, Architecture Date: 2023.06-2023.07 Located in Hongkong,China Keywords: Retrofit , Urban Agriculture, High-Rise Complex

According to data, residential buildings over 50 years old account for 30% of the existing residential buildings in Hong Kong, and the districts with the largest number of old buildings are Sham Shui Po District and Yau Tsim Mong District.

According to the data, the areas w i t h t h e m o s t re s t a u r a n t s i n Hong Kong are Yau Tsim Mong District and Sham Shui Po District, followed by Wanchai District and Kowloon District.

According to data, the area with the lowest average income in Hong Kong is in Sham Shui Po District, where the monthly median household income is 20,000 Hong Kong dollars, which is more than 10,000 Hong Kong dollars different from the highest area.

Abstract: The design aims to address the issues of food waste and ageing housing in Hong Kong. The site is located near the Sham Shui Po MTR station in Hong Kong, a neighbourhood with a large number of eateries and a serious food problem, with an average building age of over 50 years. The design utilises the vacant land of the old buildings to create an urban agriculture complex with housing, public activities, urban agriculture and food recycling.

food ISSUES

Low-income group

Hong Kong is heavily reliant on imports for food, with 5.26% of its GDP spent on food consumed in the city every day. The most important source of food is mainland China, which provides most of the city's fresh food needs: 94% of fresh pork, 100% of fresh beef, 92% of vegetables and 66% of eggs. This complete dependence exposes Hong Kong to many risk.

Taking the three factors into consideration, we finally focused on the Sham Shui Po District, which has a large population and many old buildings. The future development should mainly focus on the reconstruction of old districts.

D/H=1/2 The main road is wide and mainly serves vehicles.

D/H=1/10 The utilization rate of the gray space between residential buildings is low, so the design starts. from this space

Food wasted in 2019 accountedfor 17% of all food available toconsumers. A total of 931 milion tonnes of food ended up in the trash. This wasted food could fill-

Of this wasted food fruits and vegetable ssuffer the most, with 45% wasted during their life cycle.

T h e s o u rc e s o f f o o d w a s t e include households, catering services and food retail channels. Households are the main source of food waste. 61% of food waste occurs in the home diet.

The phenomenon of food wasteis increasing year by year, become a growing problem.

8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are related to food waste,it is urgent tosolve the problem of food waste.

Among the garbage disposal methods, incineration and landpll disposal polluted the environment account for 97%.

The site we chose is located near the Sham Shui Po MTR Station in Sham Shui Po District, the old city of Hong Kong. There are many restaurants here, and the average building age is more than 50 years. The design utilizes the open space in the old building to create an urban agricultural complex integrating residence, public activities, urban agriculture, and food recycling.

D/H=1/4 The internal roads in the block are narrower than the main roads and mainly serve the surrounding residents.

Recycling process

Civic Park in the Renovation of Existing Residences

We have set up a food regeneration cycle system in the tower: urban agriculture can provide food for the residents, and the food recycling system can reuse the leftover food as a resource, provide fertilizer for urban agriculture, provide energy for the tower, and reduce landfill waste. Pressure, reducing greenhouse gases from rotting food in landfills, saving energy and water and contributing to food security. At the same time, the urban agriculture and recycling system provides jobs for residents, and residents can participate in urban agriculture and recycling as a labor force.

This scheme adopts a prefabricated modular design strategy. The main structure is a light steel structure. Through semiprefabricated connecting components, on the one hand, it can solve the rapid production of standardized construction in the factory, and on the other hand, it can also be carried out through on-site operations. Solve some practical problems. As the load-bearing structure of the tower, it also serves as the curtain wall system of the public space, providing a climate buffer space for the interior space to adapt to the hot and humid climate in Hong Kong

At the same time, the tower uses a prefabricated modular system, so it can be adapted to different types of existing buildings and can be built quickly. This program can be promoted as Hong Kong's infrastructure to increase the flexibility of Hong Kong's food and reduce food waste. At the same time, according to the rich functional requirements of different communities, the highly compatible space design of this scheme can also carry out functional reorganization according to different needs.

SITE ANALYSIS

Abstract: E l d e r l y p e o p l e w h o h a v e m o v e d w i t h t h e i r f a m i l i e s a re a group of non-resident elderly people who have travelled far from home to follow their children to the cities where they work. Although they are reunited with their children, they are caught in a spiritual dilemma - they are alone in the city. Therefore, in this design, through realistic research to understand the pain points of the elderly migrants, proposed the needs of the elderly Maslow, based on the modular space design, isolated from the urban network into the urban system again!

I don't have any friends here. I'm so lonely... The number of migrant elderly in Guangdong is increasing year by year, 43% of them come to the big city from their hometowns to help their children to take care of their grandchildren, while the rest of them come to Guangzhou mainly for retirement or work.

AN OLD MAN'S DAY

OLD PEOPLE IN EASTEN GARDEN QUESTIONNAIR SURVEY RESEARCH This research takes the Oriental Garden Community in Panyu District, Guangzhou City as an example, and analyses the degree of place attachment of the elderly drifters in the base through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. It also explores the impact of community public space on the degree of place attachment of the elderly drifters from various aspects such as the comfort and use of community public space, so as to put forward targeted and actionable recommendations for the transformation of community public space, in order to help the elderly migrants to improve their degree of place attachment.

BASIC SITUATION After conducting a field survey in Oriental Garden, I conducted a questionnaire survey on 50 elderly people and obtained the following feedback data: 55 per cent of them were concentrated in the age group of 60-65 years old; most of the accompanying elderly people were in the state of being jobless, and only 4 per cent of the old drifters were employed.

Elderly migrants are accustomed to living in their hometowns and find it difficult to adapt to the modern cities.

Elderly people who move with their families to a new city are left alone without the company of old friends.

In caring for children, t h e e l d e r l y a re p ro n e to generational and conflicts with the younger generation.

Elderly migrants come to the new city without any financial basis, and they feel that they have no other use than to bring up their children.

2.96 / 5.00

Single-issue Activity

Most of the elderly migrants have a weak sense of belonging to the community, and they feel out of place because of cultural differences, language barriers, and even geographic discrimination. Some of the "old drifters" have raised the issue of i n s u ff i c i e n t s p a c e for activities, the scale of the space is problematic and there is no hidden space for exchanges.

3.24 / 5.00

Most of the elderly migrants suffer from loneliness and are less likely to participate in community activities due to cultural differences and language problems.

Restricted Space for Activities

More mobile elderly people think that the current venues have too many restrictions on activities, and hope that there can be more diversified types of venues after the renovation.

This is a set of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs for older people. The module is designed to rebuild a support network for the elderly in a foreign city from these five levels, so that the old drifter's hometown will be his/her place of peace of mind.

Design of Community Cultural Centre in Enning Road Area, Guangzhou

Project type: Individual, Academic, Architecture Date: 2021.09-2021.12 Located in Guangzhou,China Keywords: Community center, Historic district

In order to better understand the needs of the people in the area, I conducted questionnaire distribution and crowd interviews in the Enning Road Historical and Cultural Quarter, where the site is located, and in the neighbouring communities of Changhua Dajue Street and Duo Bao Road.In the end, a total of 104 questionnaires were distributed, of which 100 questionnaires were valid and 8 people were interviewed.

Abstract: The design is based on the concept of open architecture and aims to provide a green and open space for the residents. The design divides the large site into smaller pieces to cater for the texture of the area. The ground floor of the building mimics a traditional Cantonese-style riding tower, providing plenty of grey space for residents. Pools and courtyards are interspersed throughout the building, giving the building the character of a Lingnan courtyard. The combination of sloping roofs and modern roof gardens, echoing the Cantonese Opera Museum across the street, adds to its integration with the Enning Road.

1954-1978 Project type: Individual, Academic, Urban Design Date: 2023.10-2023.12 Located in Guangzhou,China Keywords: Industrial park, Riverside

Abstract: The goal of the "Guangzhou Shipyard Urban Design" is to create a new urban complex that integrates offices, commercial, residential and a riverfront theme park, and to make it the "new living room of Guangzhou city". In order to preserve the unique history and culture of the Guangzhou Shipyard, the design draws on the unique context of the shipyard, incorporating urban design and waterfront parks, and retaining representative elements such as the gantry cranes and the old factory buildings to create an attractive spatial environment rich in industrial culture and memory.

With the recovery of the national economy, in order to further defend t h e S o u t h C h i n a S e a b o rd e r defence of the motherland, the First Ministry of Machinery Industry, together with the relevant units, decided to build a torpedo boat factory in Guangzhou after an inspection.

1993-2003 After years of reform and development, under the unremitting efforts of the old generation of CSSC people , Guangzhou GuangzhouShipbuilding International Co.

2016 In order to implement the national industrial layout and Guangzhou's policy of "withdrawing from the secondary industry and moving into the tertiary industry", from this year onwards, GSI's Liwan site will gradually stop shipbuilding production.
