“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

Personally my longest drives in one of my “hot rods” has been about 4 hours. Wheels on the road, hitting bugs and getting wet in the rain driving. Loved every minute of the multiple trips done.

Have you ever taken a road trip to an event with your hot rod, muscle car, or cool truck? I am not talking about driving across town to a cruise-in or local car show. I am talking about driving...long distance driving. Just to clarify and not upset anyone, I am talking about DRIVING your cool ride and not HAULING it in a box or on a trailer. I get it...some of our creations can’t always be driven because of how we have built them, and that’s ok as long as you are happy...all that matters.

I bring this up as thru the magic of social media, I am keeping up with a number of friends headed to the Lone Star Round Up in Austin TX this weekend. This one is on my “to do” list along with others. I know work, family and other things impact hitting the road. Got to tell you though...it’s time for me to take a road trip.

If you have done a road trip, have you done it solo, or with a co-pilot, or maybe with some other gearheads in their rides too?

Your welcome to drive along...

Jimmy B.

What was the best part of the trip for you? Tell us! 5

Our friends with the FRANTIC FORD Nitro Funny Car team passed along this info for us to share. Taking care of our hearing is usually one of the last things we do in our shops, if at all. Being they deal with loudness at every race, they have found a product that works to protect them, and they support drag racing too! Costs nothing to read and if you are interested, elsewhere in this issue is a coupon for 20% a purchase.

Story—Photo’s by Jimmy B

When you say Detroit AUTORAMA… most folks think RIDLER AWARD. For good reason too, as the RIDLER AWARD is a very important award in this thing we call “hot rodding”. But the Detroit Autorama is a whole lot more than the RIDLER Award. Take a look on these pages and you will

The Cavalcade of Customs display has always got some killer rides on display. Having been many years in a row, we can tell you the display is always fresh and never repeated.

see what we mean. The AUTORAMA takes up both floors of COBO hall. The place is filled from wall to wall with some of the finest hot rods, muscle cars, customs, race cars (both drag racing and other forms of auto racing too), from across the USA. Being it is Detroit, the muscle car turnout is especially great with all of the greats represented and even some of those that only lasted a few years.

A great array of different manufacturers and vendors are located all over the hall, for everyone to check out their latest offerings and get questions answered. Being this is their backyard, The Detroit 3, GM, FORD & Chrysler all have displays on hand for show goer’s to checkout and enjoy. 26

Also going on during the show is a GIANT TOY Show, the Pinstripers Bash for Charity, and the TV/MOVIE Celebrities on hand to meet and greet their fans. This year it was DUKES weekend with Barbara Bach — Daisy Duke and Tom Wopat — Luke Duke on hand for the eager fans. The AUTORAMA kicked off on Friday with a special exhibit of a replica of the GENERAL LEE from the Dukes of Hazard doing a “jump’ out in front of COBO Hall! It was pretty wild to say the least.!

27

One of our favorite places/parts of the Detroit Autorama is the AUTORAMA EXTREME, located in the lower level of COBO

Hall, loving referred to by the participants there as “The Basement”.

This is where the traditional hot rods, customs, rat rods and vintage motorcycles hang out and have a good time. Very few entries have stanchions around them and in most cases it’s an outdoor show with a roof over it. Hot Rodders hanging out and just having a great time. Rock-A-Billy music playing , Tradtional lifestyle vendors and all those great artists showing their talent...a GOOD TIME FOR SURE!

The 2017 Detroit Autorama is in the books. Cool cars, a great time and all this cool people. We’re booked for next year already, because it’s that much fun. 28

One event/feature of the show that we really like and think a lot of, is one Friday, prior to the show actually opening, students from various high schools and trade schools get in early to see the show. Prior to being allowed in to the show itself, there is a meeting/overview session that they all attend. This year, David Barran who is President of the ASBE Foundation was the featured speaker. We spent some time with David prior to his talking to the students. David has a real passion for sharing knowledge and getting young men and women involved into our passion. He talks to them about the many possible careers there are available if you work hard at it. Nothing comes easy but the rewards are many! We give David an A+ for taking the time to help grow hot rodding in the Detroit Area. If you are interested in getting involved or would like more info about the ASBE Foundation contact David at 810-459-0310 or e-mail him at dbarran@asbeFound.org 29

One very cool part of the Detroit Autorama, is all the cool cars with great history that come out each. We’re sharing a couple here for you to enjoy. Dave Jenkins is the original owner of this ‘57 Chevy that had work done by a number od Detroit Customizers, including the legendary “A-Bros” (Alexander Bros). So cool to see it today, with it’s spot on restoration to it’s 1961 trim. COOL! The other car is Al Bergler’s Dragster which carries the honor of being RIDLER WINNER #1!.
