“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

Get ready...it’s the Fall Car Show Season!!

this time of year grows exponentially. With that comes some tough choic-

es. I have already heard a little of ‘”You got too much stuff for me to choose from” comments from some of our readers and followers. We take it in stride and tell those gearheads that instead of complaining about too much, can you ever have too much, embrace that fact that you have choices and not the same old 1 thing to go to. I say, pick a new event you have never been to, and go experience something new...you just might find your new favorite event!

It’s not quite Fall 2018 yet, by the calendar anyway, but the Fall Car Show Season is ramping up BIG TIME starting this weekend. It’s not just in our area of the USA, but all over. More events and shows are planned in the fall season than any other season. We have the info and data to stand behind that. Weather is the biggest factor in my opinion. For those of us that go thru changes in the seasons, Spring is popular, but Fall is more popular from the way we see it and hear it from any of our readers and friends too. The weather works well for the car crowd this time of year. It tends to be a lot less rainy, days are warm and sometimes hot after a cool morning and then it fades into a cool evening. Perfect car weather for driving, showing and enjoying our hobby. Let’s face it, after a summer of 90 plus temps most days (our neighborhood anyway), and humidity so thick some days that you take a drink of air instead of breathing, cooler sunny days are wonderful! I have to admit that like many Fall is my favorite season. Window open cruising and driving the ‘32 is nothing but big time fun. As I alluded to early in this column, the number of events that take place

Switching up a little, want to put this reminder out there. Our 3rd Cover Photo Contest will be coming up a little later this year. DON’T SEND ANY ENTRY IN YET! For those of you who may want to enter the contest when we open it up, I want to remind you that the entries will need to be in PORYES TRAIT Format, not landscape format. This is very important as landscape cant be used with out cropping the picture so much and it NO could lose the look you want us to see and judge. Turn your camera 90 degrees and capture some good shots and be ready when we open the contest up. 5

“the fun starts here”….

The racers were out at the Bonneville Salt Flats this past week to be part of the World od Speed meet. Something very cool and important happened. Team Vesco’s Turbinator II set a new record for a wheel-driven car, an insane 483 mph!!!! The Turbinator II is powered by a turbine engine from a Chinook helicopter, but unlike other jet-powered speed record cars, that turbine isn’t providing thrust to push the car along, it’s actually driving all 4 wheels directly, which is what makes this record so significant.

Back in August of this year, the team set a 470 mph record at Bonneville Speed Week. (We have a video of that run post on our FACEBOOK Page GEARHEADGAZZETTE) The World of Speed is a slightly smaller gathering of sodium-loving drivers and cars. Reports from the salt all say that the quality of the salt surface was the best they’d seen in decades. Hard, smooth, minimal ridges or dips, pretty much ideal. And that may be why Turbinator II was able to get that awesome fast run on the board. Team Vesco is using all-new spun aluminum wheels that are lighter, which helps, too. The next goal for them is to hit 500 mph, a goal which Rhonda Vesco explained the challenges of, to the Orange County Register: “Traction is the key to getting the power to the ground through the wheels without excessive tire spin. State-of-the-art traction control and electric fuel control systems have been upgraded and modified based on data from last month’s Speed Week runs. “Our car has plenty of horsepower; it’s getting the power to move the car forward through the drivetrain that is the trick. Jet and rocket cars don’t have this issue as they are just blasted forward. Turbinator II is a four-wheel-drive car and will have four all-new, spun-aluminum wheels which will be lighter in weight. Last but not least are the track conditions. The salt surface must be hard.” Think about this one gearheads, Turbinator II covered two football fields every second. Hopefully they’ll hit the 500 mph record soon! 6

Named Builder of the 2019 NSRA 50th Annual Street Rod Nationals Giveaway Car. To help celebrate the NSRA’s 50th Annual Street Rod Nationals, Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop has been named as the builder of one of the two 2019 Street Rod Nationals Giveaway cars. A 1932 Ford Roadster was unveiled on Saturday August 4th during the 49th Annual Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY. The roadster project is being built on a timeless foundation of pushing traditional form with function. The project centers around a Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop built ’32 Ford chassis, ’32 Ford Roadster steel body from Brookville Roadster, and a Boss 302 engine from Ford Performance Parts built by Automotive Specialists Racing Engines. The roadster’s line-up of parts features a number of Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop signature line parts as well as product from many wellknown name brands within the hot rod industry. “One of the keys to making the giveaway project a success, is being able to work with the NSRA and all of our great product partners we work with on a daily basis on projects we have going in the shop, making the ’32 into a hotrod I would like to have in my own garage!” said Alan Johnson, owner of Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop. Automotive enthusiasts will be able to follow the build-up of the giveaway roadster project through the pages of the NSRA members’ Streetscene magazine and on the Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop and NSRA social media pages leading up to the 50th Annual Street Rod Nationals August 1-4, 2019. The finished 1932 Ford Roadster will make its debut where one lucky participant of the 2019 NSRA Street Rod Nationals will be chosen at random to win the keys to a tradition perfected hotrod 1932 Ford Roadster. Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop, located in Gadsden, AL, is built on the foundation of strength and performance by becoming the driving force for which today’s modern hot rods are designed and engineered. A JHRS built hot rod evolves from the principles of high quality street rod building merged together with the pure muscle of the street machine world and integrating them into a super car standard for the way a hot rod project is built and marketed to our customers and automotive enthusiasts’ world-wide. For more information concerning Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop, please call (256) 492-5989 or visit Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop on the worldwide web at www.johnsonshotrodshop.com For more information concerning the 50th Street Rod Nationals, or National Street Rod Association, please call (901) 452-4030 or visit National Street Rod Association on the worldwide web at www.nsra-usa.com 7

ister your car: http://bit.ly/HWLegendsRegistration Check out the official rules to enter your car: http://bit.ly/2vnWSH7. What We're Looking For In A Car: - Authenticity: Have you ever seen a car and said, “That looks like a Hot Wheels?” We’re looking for that “Hot Wheels-ness” that nails the amazing performance and outrageous design we’re known for. – Originality: We’ve made over 25,000 unique vehicle models in the past 50 years, so we’re looking for something with unique details that stands out from the rest. - Garage Spirit: It’s built, not bought, just like Hot Wheels. We’re looking to see some elbow grease that exemplifies the challenger spirit it took to build. Entries will be judged by five

criteria (20 points per criteria = 100 points total). Even Legends play by the rules! Join our official Hot Wheels Legends Group for more information about exhibiting your car: https://www.facebook.com/groups/HotWheelsLegends/

SEPT 2018: SEPT 29: VISTA CA: 2018 SAN DIEGO DEUCE DAY: San Diego Deuce Day is a gathering of 1932 Fords that is limited to the first 100 entrants. Hot rods, street rods, race cars and stockers are all welcome. The 2018 San Diego Deuce Day will be held at the Pepper Tree Frosty at 270 South Santa Fe Ave, which is "freeway close" to San

Diego, Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside county participants, and is familiar to those who've attended Joe's "Burger Run" in years past. Dash plaques are included to all Deuce participants and Top End Tee's will have exclusive 2018 San Diego Deuce Day t-shirts for sale as well. Steve Waldron's San Diego Deuce Day tshirts are collector's items in themselves. Each year is a new classic design. This year we're pleased to be back-to-back once again with another signature event here in Escondido – Cruisin’ Grand’s Nitro Nite. On Friday night, Sept 28th, the streets of Escondido will rock to the sights and sounds of twenty plus nitro-burning, front-engined, Top Fuel dragsters that terrorized the dragstrips of America. Deuce Day participants will have exclusive parking on Kalmia Street near the dragsters staging area, so we've got ring-side seats. Those of you who have attended Nitro Nite know that the parking can be a challenge, so we are really treated well for this event. We're on Facebook too, so feel free to visit our site (San Diego Deuce Day) for current news. Refer your Deuce friends as well. We'll have up to the minute news about San Diego Deuce Day and the folks who'll bring their Deuces. If you plan to attend from out of town, we suggest these two fine lodgings that are only minutes away from Grand Avenue (Nitro Nite) and Pepper Tree Frosty (San Diego Deuce Day):

Holiday Inn Express 1250 West Valley Parkway, Escondido, CA 92029 ph. 760-741-7117 or Comfort Inn 1290 West Valley Parkway, Escondido, CA 92029 ph760-489-1010.
