“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

“It really is a personal choice and both are ok.” Fix it yourself or have it done, both work….

time was starting to slip away on me to get these things done. I thought...why not? Called SRBM up...made an appointment and dropped the coupe off. A few days later...picked up the coupe and I am ready to roll.

Just like the spirited discussions take place over built or bought or have built, the same discussions can and do take place over fix it yourself of take and have it done.

Street Rods by Michael did everything I asked them to and even more. Final cost was very fair for everything that was done. I would recommend them if you were thinking of having some work done on your ride or just the spring check out deal.

Yea...I know...more spirted email coming my way...HA! Earlier this spring I decided to take my coupe to Street Rods by Michaels hot rod shop in Shelbyville TN. They are offering a special on getting your ride ready for spring and summer car fun. I need to get a few things done that need attention plus have them give the hot rod a look over and check all the bolts and connections especially on the chassis and suspension. Better to be safe than sorry!

So, do it yourself or have it done. It really is a personal choice and both are ok. Some may want to argue that a gearhead should do all their own work. Sometimes though, even though you can and have the tools and space to do it, life and time get in the way of getting it done. Is it better to drive a safe car or just drive it and hope everything is ok. Again…. How you take care of your cool ride is a personal choice. There is no right or wrong way, just the way you do so you can have HOT ROD FUN...DRIVE ‘EM!

I can spin a wrench and do mechanical work like a lot of you gearheads. Never claimed to be a master mechanic but know my way around a car. I have done the kind of things I had done at SRBM in years past. Jack up the ride and get under it and check things out, check fasteners for tightness, change the oil, grease fittings, you get the drift.

Live It Fully Everyday

Jimmy B.

This year due to a busy schedule

“the fun starts here”….

Boys.

Story & Photo by Gary Falls

Now the next thing I needed to be cool was a floor shift. Again the STEM education payed off again. I figured what does a floor shift consist of, a shift lever, maybe with a Briggs and Stratton piston from my old go-cart on top , some sort of pivot point and some linkage to the transmission shift lever. So, I proceeded to cut the floorboard and bending a tab of floor sheet metal upward for me to hook the shift lever to for a pivot point. Now a lever, so out the barn I go again. I found a piece of flat stock about 1” wide and about 2’ long. Drilled a hole in it along with the tab I bent up from the floorboard, put a bolt through them, now I have a shift lever. I drilled another hole in the bottom of the shift lever below the floorboard and made a rod from it to the transmission shifter, now I have a floor shift!! I did drill a hole in a piston and make a knob for it.

Let me just preface this by saying, when you get to be my age, you have a story for everything. This is a photo of my first hot rod when I was in high school in Pontiac Michigan (circa 1961). I was 16 at the time and bought the 1952 Ford for $100 from money I earned working on a farm for $1.00 an hour. It had the famous indestructible flathead V8 with an automatic transmission. I owned the car for 3 years before my then girlfriend’s dad backed from his garage and hit it. Without the front bumper, which was the trend of the time, he crushed the front driver’s fender. The insurance totaled it giving me $150 and I traded it 1964 for a 1957 Chevy and got $125 trade in. I came way out on top on that one. Now about my Hot Rod. Now remember I worked and lived on a farm so my mechanical degree was from S.T.E.M (Shade Tree Engineering and Mechanical). The trend of the day, besides removing the front bumper to reduce front end weight, was to lift the front end of the car, the photo is pre removal. Now I could have purchased something from J.C. Whiney, if anyone remembers them, but I didn’t have the money to buy so I said to myself “What would a student from STEM do?” I scrounged around the barn and found six old spark plugs. Got one of my dad’s longest pry bars I could find, jacked up the old ford and pried the spring coils apart enough to fit the nut of the spark plug between them. Now my hot rod was jacked up in the front like the big

OK, I have it lifted and have a floor shift, now let’s make some noise!! Back in the day they didn’t call them cutouts, they were called “dumps” Again, back to the magic barn where you could find anything. I found a 12” piece of 3” galvanized pipe and two end caps. What people did was cut a hole in the exhaust up front, weld on the pipe and use the end cap to close them off when not in use. So, I cut the galvanized pipe in half so I had two threaded ends with caps and I was ready to start cutting a hole in the exhaust and welding. Well, my dad saw I had the welder out and I told him what my plan was and he put a nix to that real quick. So what else would a STEM graduate do? Wala! I’ll weld them to the frame so it 22

“Looks” like I have dumps. Cool-About-That! You can see them hanging down in the photo.

some of my Bobby Vinton albums to and I could plug that in and listen to it through the radio. This was years before the 8 track tapes were invented. I wish I had patented on that idea.

Some of my Hot Rod boxes have been checked. But what about paint, I can’t have an ugly, faded pukey green car that’s “Soooo CooooI. I went and bought some Bondo (there was none in the barn) and started filling the

I could go on as to how I used a leg of a swing set for my “Lake Pipes”, used aluminum paint to make my wheels look chrome, had to put a couple of quarts of kerosene in the oil so it would start in the cold Michigan winter, or how the floorboard was rusted along the drivers side and I had to tie a rope around the B pillar to hold the door shut, but by now you probably get the idea of how I grew up, as not only a cheap SOB but a real make it yourself car guy that graduated from STEM.

rust holes, along with some help with screen I found in an old screen door, and started filling and sanding rust spots. I was thinking, where I could get a spray gun. Don’t need one! Rattle can! So, I scuffed up the car and started rattlecanning it with red primer. Let it dry then washed the car using a Brillo pad and that semi buffed the paint smooth. A couple coats of wax, it looked as good as an Earl Scheib $29.95 paint job from the day.

Editors Note: I have known Gary for many years and proud to call him friend. I worked with Gary at the General Motors Facility in Spring Hill TN. Gary was an engineer in the Powertrain Bldg. Gary has since escaped , read RETIRED. It’s an ongoing joke from me that Gary and another friend of mime are 2 of the cheapest car builders anywhere. Cal it Frugal instead of cheap and let’s just say that Gary can do more with parts from PULL-A –PART that any other hot rodder I know., and he makes it all work and look great too. Gary is a true gearhead!

I needed some tunes. I took the old tube radio out and re wired so I could just use the amplifier part. I wired in a couple of jacks into the ashtray and me and my buddy jammed the night away on our guitars. I also had a portable plastic reel to reel tape recorder that I recorded 23
